Downsides: The shower head that we got with the job was K-mart quality, and the price for the job, in our minds, was high. In addition, we got a quote on replacing three basic bathroom faucets, with faucets we purchased at Menard's for about $15.00 each. The quote was: $1,058.40, and that was with the Angie's list discount. We found a handyman for that job, for a couple hundred dollars.Bottom line: If it is a simple plumbing problem, hire a handyman. If your need is more complicated, you have plumbing code issues, and you don't want to risk a water leak, hire Soderlin, or shop around. Most charge you just to come out.. We did not shop around. Next time, we may. However, overall, except for the cheap shower head, the work was done well, and professionally.
Description of Work: The Plumber had to cut through the dry wall in the guest bathroom to get at pipes, so he could eventually fix our dripping shower head in the master bath. Quality work; however, the new shower head that came with the repair was defective and he had to come back and replace it. He was very responsive and punctual with the both jobs.

The experience was fine overall, but don't be fooled by the upfront price. They will estimate everything as the worst case scenario and not give a break when the job goes smoothly. I would much rather pay time and materials and have a fair price at the end of the job. They could not have been out more than $50 in materials on 2 feet of copper pipe and 1 valve. That means that they charged $500 an hour for labor.
Description of Work: Radiator pipe was leaking. Drained system, replaced pipe and valve on radiator, filled system. They did not need to go under floor or behind any walls as all work was exposed. Took about 2 hours.

At Soderlins we appreciate feedback and comments that can help better us as a company. Unfortunately we were not able to agree with this customer with the work that was done. I can tell you that we are not $500 per hour and that this job was a lot more involved than the customer has stated.

Wonderful experience with Soderlin. Jeff was on time, courteous, and professional.
Description of Work: We noticed a leak in the drain pipe in the wall under our kitchen sink. We called Soderlin, and made an appointment for the next day. They called to say exactly when they would arrive (not a four hour window), and Jeff arrived right on time. He got right to work, and informed me step-by-step what the problem was, and what he was going to do to fix it. Jeff was very professional and courteous. He cut out the section of damaged pipe and replaced it with a new section. He tested the pipe, and it worked. We will definitely use Soderlin again.

Water hose to washer broke on Thursday night. Found main water shutoff and turned off water to house. Called my serviceplus provider who couldn't get to me til Monday. Then called Soderlin who indicated they could get there at 7:00 the next morning (Friday) so I wouldn't be without water for too long. Was excellent experience as it went so quickly and easily. I would definitely use them again for any plumbing issues or other concerns that I might have that they do. The lady I reached on the phone was wonderful as was the plumber who fixed my washer. A+
Description of Work: Replaced broken washer hoses with new ones that are guaranteed for almost forever. Replaced water shutoff faucets at washing tubs with valves that are much easier to use and shouldn't get corroded. Provided a wealth of priceless advice while doing the plumbing work.

The whole process went surprisingly well. The plumber explained what needed to be done in addition to just replacing the faucets. He also explained the risk of removing the one faucet attached to the 30 foot long pipe and being able to keep the existing pipe. This we were already aware of, so he was only confirming what we knew to be a very real potential problem. Fortunately, the faucet got removed without ruining the pipe and only some fixing of the threading on the existing pipe was needed before the new faucet was installed. The other plumbing work, including the second faucet, was not a problem at all. This is one of these home repairs we had been dreading having done. While not cheap, it turned out to be a lot less costly and problematic than we had feared. Jeff Taylor from Soderlin Plumbing did a great job.
Description of Work: Our two outdoor faucets needed replacing, as well as one of the faucet's shut-off valve. Due to age, corrosion, and one very long water pipe located in a crawl space, we were not sure how expensive this job was going to be. We were given a worst case scenario price and then the plumber went about trying to see if he could keep that from happening and get the price lower. Fortunately, with a little homeowner assistance, he was able to keep from having to replace 30 feet. of pipe, thus saving us at least $500. Some additional indoor pipe from the meter to the water softener in the basement had to be replaced as well.

After putting up with a leaky shower for too long, we called them and they made an appointment very promptly. We expected that they would need to replace the faucet but we found out they only needed to replace the internal mechanism. He worked quickly and was very polite. The faucet works perfectly now. We have used them for all of our plumbing needs for the last 5 years and will always use them for future plumbing projects.

Tub valve was leaking to the point that I had to turn my water off Friday night. I called Saturday morning and Jeff was able to come to my house by 12/1 pm. To my surprise, he came earlier and identified the problem very quickly. He did a 'rebuild' and was thorough, quick and efficient. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. I paid a $189 fee for a weekend emergency call in addition to the cost of the service, but it was worth every penny!!!

They came over and advised to change the pump, but, they were supposed to do it, after the leak was checked. They then went ahead directly install the pump and did not check the leak. I was charged $900 for the job. When I turned the air condition on, it was still leaking and I had to call them back. They checked the attic air conditioner and advised the coil and pump was fine. I then had to call someone else, who found the leak to be in the coil. We then called them and asked for our money back and they sent the collections agency. We then contacted the business bureau and filed a case against them, and then after negotiation, we paid $200. They were incompetent and I will never use them in future.

Like all customers we appreciate and use feed back to help our company grow. We went out to this customer multiple times to try and help them identify the leak, We originally did find the pump not working, and stated that this is where we would start but that there still could be problems. The other problems were related to the fact that the original install was not done properly as there was no drip pan under the unit. They did call back and state they still saw a water stain we returned and there was still no leak. The other problem with this job was that originally the install was not done properly as there was no drip pan under the unit. Before we could even go back a third time to investigate the job further they stopped payment on the check. At that time we stated to them that we could no longer help them.

Jeff examined the dryer hookup and venting and told us that none of it would pass inspection. The former owners had done some DIY work, and it wasn't up to code. He took the time to show me exactly why certain things wouldn't pass inspection because they were dangerous. For example, the dryer vent had been screwed into place, which caused lint to catch on the screws and create a fire hazard—the vent was FULL of lint. He did an estimate of the cost for trying to fix what was already there as well as for replacing everything. The replacement estimate was less money due to reduced work hours, and was also safer in the long run. Jeff replaced everything quickly and tested it all to make sure connections were reliable. He was friendly, courteous, and professional, and we will definitely be using his services again. As our home is 100 years old this year, and because of the aforementioned DIY work from prior owners, we will get to have Jeff and Soderlin back out to make our home safe and secure. An interesting note: when I mentioned to three different friends that we had hired Soderlin to do our plumbing work, they all commented on the high quality of work and good reputation the company has earned. We agree with that assessment.

The drain line was backing up into the house through a basement floor drain. I called Soderlin as we have used them in the past for this service and set up an appointment for the next afternoon to get a plumber in to look at the situation. They use another company called Cardinal Services to do their drain cleaning. The serviceman showed up a few minutes early after calling ahead to let me know he was on his way. He looked over the situation and brought his router in to clean out the tree roots that were plugging the line. He was very informative, personable, and thorough in providing his service and informing me what was going on and what we should be concerned about. He said this month they were doing free video inspections and he brought in equipment to do that after the line was running. He had us watch while he ran the camera through the line and was very informative about what we were looking at and some of the concerns about the condition of the house sewer line. This was incredibly helpful in our knowing what state the line is in to help us plan for its eventual replacement. This serviceman, whose name is Zack, provided great service in the most helpful, informative, and friendly manner. we thank him for that.

He gave us several things to try to test the condensation theory. After trying many of the things he suggested, we've concluded that there may be a tiny, tiny leak, but the majority of the moisture is coming from condensation. We were only charged the $59 visit fee, rather than just taking our word that the valve was leaking and replacing it. He gave us some rough estimates on how much the tub faucets would cost.
Description of Work: We believed we had a leak on the shutoff valve of our main water line. Mark carefully examined the line and concluded that we actually had a condensation issue. On the "why'll you're here" front, we had him look at a tub faucet that was leaking.

Jeff Taylor from Soderlin have been a god-send to us as we have embarked on a remodel project. When the new bath tub that our GC ordered ended up being the wrong bath tub (after waiting two weeks and having the old one destroyed and removed), Jeff jumped right in and found a nearly identical tub in town and installed it that day. Since this is our only bathroom, you can imagine my gratitude. Jeff and the whole Soderlin team are so incredibly professional and do amazing work and the speed of light. I wouldn't even entertain the idea of having another plumbing company step foot in my house. They can be a bit on the higher price end, but when it comes to quality, service and reliability, they are worth every single penny. You truley get what you pay for with these guys.

First Soderlin easily accomodated a change in date due to the late delivery of my appliances. Next, Jeff was able to quickly assess what problems existed with the new appliance work and determine the best way to go about the changes. My new range was a European model that Jeff had never seen before, but he was able to quickly install the range and hook up the gas line. The anti-tip brackets were different and required a brace to be added to my wall (too short for the distance), but Jeff did that without a problem. My favorite thing about Soderlin was repeated when I used them this time (have used them three times previously): another master plumber became free and so he came over to assist Jeff, which helped finish the overall job quicker but cost me no more money (in fact a bit less because they were finished sooner).

You are thinking I spent a lot of money. I am thinking, I got a great deal on an amazing amount of work, and the benefits will be long-lasting. My house is 125 yrs old this year. It was built before indoor plumbing or city water supply. The old water heater was installed by a homeowner, and violated previous codes, such as no shut-off for water or gas. (Did I mention I am doing this project because the old water heater is leaking?) The gas and water lines to the old unit formed a cobweb-like nest between the main supply lines and the heater. It was vented, not to the chimney, but to the boiler vent. Simply to replace the unit with a comparable one would involve redoing gas & water lines, plus relining the chimney. (Remember the age of my house and chant, "to meet current codes.") I considered all the energy efficient options: direct vent, heat pump, tankless. Tankless was a strong contender as my house is 1 story and the incoming gas line is high pressure. In the end, I went with direct vent, condensing, which is a newer technology for residential this year (2010). A condensing water heater needs a drain hose to the floor drain. For this reason, and the fact that the gas line had to be replaced to accommodate the current code requirements for supplying appliances .... I decided to put the new water heater in a different location. First, the gas line is redone. The new heater looks like a spaceship with an orange nose cone. Then, water. All the original house piping was galvanized; most looks (and performs) like a bad case of artery buildup by now. Mark the plumber is repiping, and oh, look, there's a leaky valve to the outside water. Replaced -- I can now TURN OFF the outside water in the winter. Hallelujah! Next, a couple of valves to the boiler are replaced because they are about done. Easy-turn lever handles. To run the exhaust vent from the new water heater required removing another nest of piping -- a long-defunct shower head and hand-washing faucet right next to the laundry sink. And so the piping to the laundry sink is replaced. Mark the plumber is soaked when he tests the water pressure to the laundry sink. Hallelujah! The initial test as the new heater is filling with water for the first time: I had hot water within about 15-20 minutes. The new tank is 50 gal. I have a brief pang as I realize the heater is now located under the bedroom. We test the exhaust fan ... luckily, I can barely hear it over the air purifier running in the next room. Because the gas lines were redone, city code requires an overnight air test. This is after the heater is installed. It was a little like camping as I had to make do with the hot water that was already in the tank. On the one hand. On the other hand, it was a good test of how well the tank is insulated. The water was still well above lukewarm the next morning; the heater had been off from about 4 pm. Mark was out to set up the air test and then came out for the inspection in case anything needed to be done. This was good; the valve for the air test had leaked overnight. He had to replace that and redo the test to the satisfaction of the inspector. I did laundry the next day. Funny thing, new piping. I turned on the washing machine, and there is only a strange hummmmmm. Not the sound of water gushing. It took a moment for me to remember that I now have WORKING shut-off valves for the washing machine supply. Hallelujah!

It was a very good experience in that they were able to schedule me at a time that would work well for me. The plumber was on time, very professional, and even came with his own little rug that he put down by the front door. I'd purchased a faucet, which was defective, so I ended up with a plumber supplied faucet. Although it's very nice--he quoted me a price of $400 just for the faucet! I baulked at the price and he discounted it $100 and gave me the 10% AL discount. Everything is working very well and the work is warrantied, but I think the prices are excessive and I'm on the fence about whether I would use them again or not. I also think that considering their fees, charging a $59 trip fee is overkill.

Jeff was very pleasant to work with. This house is OLD and nothing ever goes well or as planned but Jeff endured my old house well. Jeff had to turn off the water coming from the well. I called Soderlin because the furnace at my mother's home was not working. A person came out, looked at the furnace label, said that this particular furnace had been recalled, and that he could not work on it. He said that I would need a new furnace. He also said that they were booked this time of year and could not install a furnace right away. He made a phone call, told me that they had a cancellation, and that a furnace could be installed that day. A second technician came out and started the process of installing the furnace. He said that it could take a while and that I could go to work. So, I left for work, and he called me when he was close to being finished. When I got to the house, he said that the gas had been shut off and he had to look for the meter to turn it on to get the new furnace working. I told him that it would have been nice if the first guy had checked to see if the gas was on. He said that the first guy must have checked. I told him that the first guy did not check the gas and that he immediately said that the furnace had been recalled and could not work on it. I believe that I may not have needed a new furnace. Earlier this month, I called Soderlin to speak to the first technician that came out so that maybe he could avoid this situation in the future. I told him that the gas was not on at the property and that maybe I didn't need a new furnace. He seemed surprised. He said that he would not done anything with the furnace anyway because it had been recalled; however, I can't believe that he would not have just turned on the gas if that was the only thing wrong with the furnace. I don't think that turning on the gas is technicially "working" on the furnace. I take part blame for this issue. If I had told the technician that the house was vacant, perhaps he would have done a more thorough check. On the other hand, I feel it is his job to check these obvious things. (For example, if a t.v. is not working, a repair person would probably check to see if it is plugged in first.) Also, I did not get a second opinion, which is always unwise. I take solace in the fact that I plan to sell this house in a few weeks, and a new furnace is a strong selling point. What is done is done.

To snake a clogged kitchen drain the company charged a flat fee of $225 - very high for a 25-foot snake job. Plumber then determined that the drain needed re-routing. It's about a 3 foot run of PVC from an old, iron drain pipe in the floor to a new, PVC drain. His flat-fee estimate - $800. I hired someone else. He charged $150. This is the second time this company has given me absurdly high flat-fee estimates for relatively simple work. Never again.
