I told Soderlin our furnace had overheated the house Sunday night, well beyond where the thermostat was set. I turned the furnace off over night and on Monday all was well but I wanted the problem fixed so I can go out of town and not worry about it. On Thursday, Jeff from Soderlin inspected the system, said he saw no problems, just call Soderlin again if the problem reoccurs and don't turn the system off until Soderlin gets here. Jeff agreed with me that Soderlin's order taker should have given me that advice by phone, instead of sending him out. I paid their $89 "service call fee" for exactly NOTHING.
Description of Work: Jeff inspected our heating system.

THE CUSTOMER HAD INFORMED ME THAT SHE NEEDED A NEW PART ON HER FURNACE, SHE DID NOT STATE IT WAS OR WASN'T RUNNING. WE CAME OUT. UNFORTUNATELY WE CANNOT DIAGNOSE AN EXACT PROBLEM WHEN THE SYSTEM IS RUNNING FINE. IT IS OUR POLICY NOT TO GUESS AND JUST START REPLACING PARTS HOPING WE FIX WHAT MAY NOT BE BROKEN. I WOULD HOPE THE CUSTOMER WOULD APPRECIATE US NOT JUST WANTING TO REPLACE PARTS TO MAKE A BUCK. IF ANYONE READING THIS WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ANYTHING FURTHER, I WOULD GLADLY TALK TO THEM ABOUT IT. Every interaction with Soderlin from scheduling the estimate through performing the work was highly professional. Some highlights: The estimate was scheduled very quickly, and the person producing the estimate (Darin) pointed out that he'd also be performing the work if we decided to proceed. Soderlin was ready to do the work the next day if we liked, but we had some demolition to do. Darin arrived right on time, both for the estimate, and to perform the job. Darin and Jeff (who arrived shortly after Darin to assist) are great guys and they clearly take pride in their work. They kept a positive attitude throughout the job, despite the large quantities of snow falling outside. Darin & Jeff completed the job in about 6 hours. Soderlin bids their jobs on a fixed bid basis, not hourly. I plan to hire Soderlin again for future plumbing work.
Description of Work: We needed two cast iron hot water heating mains (supply & return) moved from where they've sat for 80 years up into the basement ceiling joists for a remodeling project. The work involved draining the heating system, removing the old cast iron piping, drilling through the joists (the run was perpendicular to the joists), re-plumbing with new copper compression fittings, hooking up to the existing radiator supply and return pipes, refilling the system and cleaning up the job site. Approximately 50 feet of cast iron piping was replaced.

We didn't get the service we asked for. They replaced the washers instead. We were told that if they didn't have the stems, they could come back and replace at no charge. When the plumber came, he told us that he would charge us for the stems. We are right back to where we started.

I would definitely call them back for plumbing work.
Description of Work: My drain (in the basement) plugged up on a weekday. I called at 9pm; the man I talked to was extremely helpful, very patient. Told me they opened at 8 am. I called them at 9am the next day and they told me they could have someone out between 12:30 and 5 pm that day. At 1:00 I got a call and the guy said he could be out within a half hour. The person showed up in a Cardinal Services van. He was very experienced; I was pleased with his services. Communication was excellent. Soderlin provided this subcontractor for drain cleaning work.

They were able to schedule quickly and showed up on time. Price wasn't necessarily any better than prior company but they were able keep the same basic configuration so there was minimal wall work for me to fix. They did a nice job.
Description of Work: Faucet in tub was dripping; it had been fixed a few months before by a different company who indicated it should be replaced due to age and they recommended a complete replacement with completely different configuration. When dripping started again contacted Soderlin to come in and make recommendation.

It went okay and the technician was on time. We were disappointed that the company would not accept our Angie's List coupon for a 10% discount because they said that the coupon only applied to 'work performed' not service calls. This struck us as false advertising and the technician wasn't particularly nice about the refusal. We feel that there should be a footnote on the coupon that says that service calls are not considered 'work performed.'
Description of Work: The pilot light on an old auxiliary gas heater went out. We had tried to light it, but were unable to. The person from Soderlin's came out and used a propane torch and spent a total of five minutes in the house.

THE COUPON STATES IT IS FOR WORK PERFORMED. INSTEAD OF CHARGING THIS CUSTOMER ANOTHER CHARGE TO GET THEIR HEAT THE TECHNICIAN ONLY CHARGED THE SERVICE CALL FEE. I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS IS FALSE ADVERTISING. WE WERE HAPPY TO GET THE CUSTOMERS HEAT BACK ON AT LITTLE EXPENSE TO THEM.

They came over to my house the same day I called, it made me wish I had called sooner! The plumber explained everything he was doing, and when I thought I'd have to have both the bathtub and sink unclogged, he said that fixing the sink might help the bathtub; he was right and saved me $150.

I live out of town and own a rental house in Minneapolis, so it is critical that I can trust any contractors. Mark G from Soderlin had done work on the house before and did a great job. I called him, and he gave me an estimate. He helped advise me on what fixture to pick, and I was able to find a reasonably priced one on the web. He installed it beautifully, and my renter told me he was very friendly and cleaned up the place well. The fixture looks and works great. In addition, after the repair was completed, I realized that I wanted to keep part of the fixture as a memento since it was original to the house. I called Mark, and he still had the part I wanted. He sent it to me in the mail for no charge. I thought that was great, and I'm not sure any other plumber would have bothered. I would definitely use Soderlin again.
Description of Work: My shower was leaking and the hot water didn't work well. It was originally installed in 1923, and the fixture could not be repaired. The fixture needed to be replaced.

This was an excellent experience with a service provider. It is especially impressive because this was a weekend emergency. The service was explained well; likewise the cost. I would highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: Shut-off water and replaced broken leaking hose connector at back of toilet...This was a Saturday AM emergency call which was answered by a woman (no VM) who was pleasant and a service man who arrived 15 minutes earlier than the estimated arrival time (within an hour). He responded to my questions about another problem with hot water in the house, proposed a solution, and will return to resolve this on a weekday when rates are lower. He also suggested I present their Angie's List coupon for a 10% discount (not good for the Emergency call).

My radiator heating system was malfunctioning and Soderlin showed up exactly on time the same day for a service call. Jeff, the technician, was very friendly and clean (removed his shoes as appropriate). He quickly diagnosed the aqua-stat relay control as needing replacement and quoted a price of $631 for the job (flat fee). He also suggested draining and refilling the expansion tank, which would cost $289. The prices quoted seemed extremely high, but as I had no heat in January, I told him to go ahead with the aqua-stat. He suggested that I could service the expansion tank myself and he would show me how. Jeff was very helpful in explaining the system to me, how it worked, and what I could do myself to maintain it. I'm very satisfied with every aspect of the work, but the pricing is completely insane. I would only hire them again if competitive bids showed them to be acceptably priced.
Description of Work: Replaced aqua-stat on my boiler for $646. This price included a $79 service call fee and a 10% Angie's List coupon. Total time for job was less than an hour and a half, and from later research on-line I determined the part was about $150, meaning the hourly rate ended up being more than $300 (they did not break out parts and labor, but rather only quote ''by the job'').

VERY POORLY. I AM NEVER USING THEM AGAIN. ONCE THE WORK HAD FAILED INSPECTION TWICE, JEFF CALLED ME TO BULLY ME INTO LETTING HIM ARGUE WITH THE INSPECTOR ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT THE WORK SHOULD HAVE FAILED. THE INSPECTOR WON THE ARGUMENT, AND A NEW PLUMBER FROM SODERLIN SHOWED UP THAT DAY TO REMOVE THE EXTRA BACKWATER VALVE, FINALLY. AFTER THAT POINT, IT DID PASS INSPECTION ON THE THIRD TRY. JEFF "EXPLAINED" TO ME THAT CODE WAS VERY COMPLICATED AND DIFFERENT FROM CITY TO CITY AND HARD TO KEEP TRACK OF. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. IT IS THEIR JOB TO KNOW THE CODE, AND TO LOOK IT UP IF THEY'RE NOT SURE. THEY SHOWED NO CONCERN FOR HOW LONG THE JOB WAS TAKING, THE FACT THAT I WAS UNABLE TO DO LAUNDRY FOR NEARLY A WEEK DUE TO HAVING MY FLOOR RIPPED UP, OR THAT IT WOULD TAKE SEVERAL DAYS AFTER THEY WERE DONE TO GET THE FLOOR REPLACED AND THAT CHRISTMAS WAS COMING UP, THUS CAUSING SCHEDULING PROBLEMS. IN SHORT: UNPROFESSIONAL, NO SENSE OF URGENCY, AND NOT DONE RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.
Description of Work: MY BASEMENT FLOOR DRAIN WAS BACKING UP WHENEVER I TOOK A SHOWER. SODERLIN CAME OUT AND FIXED THE PROBLEM. IT TOOK MULTIPLE WEEKS AND MULTIPLE VISITS TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, MULTIPLE WEEKS AND MULTIPLE VISITS TO FIX THE PROBLEM, AND THE PLUMBER WHO CAME OUT TO DO THE WORK WAS APPARENTLY UNFAMILIAR WITH ST. PAUL CODE. THE BACKWATER VALVE WAS ORIGINALLY INSTALLED IN THE WRONG PLACE, CAUSING THE WORK TO FAIL THE FIRST INSPECTION. MATT CAME BACK OUT AND INSTALLED A NEW BACKWATER VALVE (WHICH HE GLUED SHUT, APPARENTLY ACCIDENTALLY). THIS ENDED UP CAUSING THE WORK TO FAIL THE SECOND INSPECTION, AS THE INSPECTOR WANTED THE FIRST BACKWATER VALVE REMOVED. AFTER THIS HAPPENED, I CALLED AND REQUESTED THAT SODERLIN REMOVE THE FIRST BACKWATER VALVE, AS THE INSPECTOR HAD NOW TWICE ASKED FOR. JASON AND JEFF AND MARY FROM SODERLIN WERE ALL RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL TO ME.

Response from Soderlin Plumbing, Heating, & Air Conditioning
We regret she feels we took too long and did not care about her home. In certain situations, in order to minimize costs for the customer, we use a process of elimination approach. Rather than opening her floor to start, we augered the drain, ran a camera and found it was necessary to replace a section of the waste piping. After diagnosing the problem, we encouraged her to purchase a Universal Protection Plan that gave her $500 off the job. She stated we did not do the work to code. This is not true. Because certain aspects of the state codes and requirements are at the discretion of the inspector, compliance can vary from city to city. Unfortunately our attempt to advocate for an additional backwater valve was misinterpreted as being unfamiliar with the code. In addition to the backwater valve we installed on the waste piping, we wanted to leave an additional valve, which had been installed many years ago as protection against storm water backup. When the inspector required the removal of the old valve, we complied and removed the valve. It was never glued shut. I spoke to her and was privy to the conversations she had with Jeff, our master plumber and Mary in the office and we all treated her with respect and were not rude. It can be easy to type mistruths about our people and our integrity as a company. This offends us. Our portion of the job did not take multiple weeks and we complied promptly with any request by her or the inspector. We will not be refunding any money.

They did a good job cleaning the drains as. They could not fix the bathtub leak (a tiling problem), that was fine. They replaced parts to stop the toilet from running; this did not work, so the solution was to replace the toilet; which was fine. I was unsure if I would re-hire them for more work. The technicians were pleasant, courteous, and arrived in a timely manner. However there were two problems; the home office did not apprise that there would be only an hourly fee after the first quoted hour for the drain cleaning. Fortunately the work took less than an hour. The second was that without my permission or knowledge the technician affixed a company contact information sticker on my brand new broiler, which is under warranty with a different company (I did NOT request any work on my boiler). The sticker was not easy to remove; it took 20 minutes with a razor and solvent. They offered to remove it, but I declined as I would have had to have an appointment.
Description of Work: They cleaned the main drain and washing machine drain, pinpointed the problem of the bathtub leaks, and pinpointed the problem of the running toilet.

The entire experience was extremely frustrating. The contractor that arrived at my house initially was very nice and performed the work as expected...until he broke the pipe open. Soderlin scheduled one of their plumbers to arrive within 2 hours after my call. After 15 minutes in my basement to assess the situation, he provided me with a quote that FAR exceeded my expectations. The Plumber even told me to shop around because they were not the best priced company to work with. I did just that the next day. I ended up going with Weld & Sons out of Golden Valley. They sent 2 guys to my house right away. They assessed the situation and got right to work. They were done in literally 15 MINUTES and charged less than $200.00 to fix the problem exactly the way Soderlin recommended that would have cost 6 labor hours and $1,200.00. I will never call Soderlin again nor would I ever recommend them. I am very surprised that they were rated so highly on Angie's List.
Description of Work: The original work order required Soderlin to open up the main plumbing line in my basement and clean it out. They sent out a contractor to unclog the drain...which he did. In the process on cleaning the drain, he broke off a metal cap from a pipe joint. This required me to call Soderlin to send another plumber to my house to fix it. He recommended cutting above and below the big hole in my pipes and replacing the joint with approximately 8 inches PVC/Plastic pipes and provided me with an estimate. The estimate included 6 hours of labor and totaled over $1,200.

Called Soderlin one day in the afternoon to ask about appointments, prices, etc. I wanted to get someone to look at my hot water system as one zone was not heating properly. Also wanted to have boiler inspected as we recently bought the house and the pressure was running high. Was offered an appointment for 8am the next day which was great for my schedule. Their office called the next day at 7:40am to say their tech, Jeff would be right on time, and he was. Jeff was really nice and friendly. He diagnosed the problems promptly, had an estimate in minutes. I was shocked at the cost of the estimate which was $1428. (I used the Angie's List 10% off coupon to get my total price). But I wanted it fixed, he was there and I know I would have to pay some one else $80-100 to get them out to probably say the same thing. He was ready to start so I said okay. It only took him 2 1/2 hours which was great, but that seems like a heck of a labor rate ($450/HR) as there were only a few parts involved.
Description of Work: Cut and remove 3 old zone valves, replace with new honeywell zone valves. Rewire system to utilize the 3 thermostats in the house, as system had been converted to using 1 thermostat. Purge zones and expansion tank.

Fortunately Sideline was able to remove the exterior faucet supply and replace one aged shut-off (inside), the old cast iron supply line & outside faucet on my 1913 home. I have used their services for updating an old connection to a gas dryer and for a new gas hot water heater after a disastrous experience with Monegasque Home Service and their subcontractor, Mr. Rooter. I learned about Sideline when I was renting the third floor of a house in the Isles neighborhood from my former landlord.
Description of Work: The outdoor faucet was leaking at the rate of 2 1/2 gallons per day. Sideline does charge just to show up, but their prices are competitive in Minneapolis. The plumber gave me the worst case scenario and options to either fix or hold the problem at bay until the spring.

This went great. A Soderlin technician came out right away and confirmed the diagnosis. Even though it was 2:00 on a Friday afternoon. He said they would put in a new chimney liner that day. While he was waiting for a helper to arrive with needed parts, he visited with us and explained what they would be doing and why. He also talked to us about the status and maintenance of our old furnace. They installed the new chimney liner and chimney cap that afternoon. When the cement patch they did on the basement end of the chimney didn't turn out right, they came back the next week to repair it.
Description of Work: We turned on our furnace for this first time this season and exhaust fumes backed up into the basement. Minnegasco determined that our chimney liner had rusted out, dropped down and was blocking the furnace ventilation outlet. We called Soderlin Plumbing and Heating to install a new chimney liner.

The plumber arrived on time and was very professional. He took his shoes off when entering my house without being asked. He answered all my questions. He was very patient and explained the problem and what he needed to do to fix it in terms I could understand. He also wrote down instructions I can reference in the future so that I can fix the problem if it comes up again. He went over and above the call of duty and found me a part that was missing from my disposal from an old one so that I would not have to try to find the part on my own. I was very pleased with the service.

Jeff was very responsive and informative during initial job inspection for quoting. He clearly had the knowledge of code requirements as well as extent of work that the jobs required. He brought all the tools and supplies he needed so there was no break in the work. The gas line replacement was actually performed by Ethan as a separate job. Soderlin and Ethan responded within 30 minutes of the call for help which saved me from missing more time from work. Both men were very professional, respectful, and determined about getting the work done.
