Description of Work: Originally I planned out numerous items to be repairs or changed in my house, along with creation of a couple of new showers. After the original bidder came out, who was very pleasant although not actually doing the work, I received a typed out list of the tasks involved, along with an estimate (not broken out into hours, only a charge to complete everything). I was able to accomplish some of the items on my list as I was building out the structure and doing tile work, etc., building the base for everything. After doing some of these items over the initial week after the bid I stopped in to speak with them, as I was able to tackle some items, and needed them to know. The manager/owner was not pleased about this - i had taken away some of the work for them, saving myself, by my calculation, about $1300 based on the time I likely saved, in retrospect. I did spell everything out for the owner, and told him those items I would need to remove from the bid. I was told it was "time and parts" at that point. Fine, but I should have asked about the cost per hour. $170. The plumber who came out was very nice, performed great work, an I had no issues with him. At the time. However, when I got the final bill, I did have an issue with the basic, typewritten appearance of the bill, with no explanation or calculation of the costs involved. Therefore, I went back into the store to inquire about this. I met a bit of resistance when speaking with the plumbing manager/owner about this. Asking about the labor charge, it was explained to me that the plumber who bids this job out also gets paid Travel Time, and time picking out equipment. Really. $170 per hour for picking and driving, I'd rather not spend again. The items were pretty basic, and I live within 5 minutes of their store. I don't know I I paid him to drive from the other side of the city, or what... After seeing this final bill, I did have an issue with the time the plumber was spending talking with the other contractor I had there, and time spent on the phone in his truck. I should have said something to him at the time, but did not think he would try to bill for that time. He also told me he would need to come by the net day, there would be no additional visit charge, but he did charge an additional 2 hours for that visit, to complete something I thought he was going to do the first day. Overall, work was good as far as I can tell, the issue was again the billing and the overall documentation of the hours billed, etc. I'll certainly still go to their store for hardware and such, but don't think I can afford to pay their rates. Even if "cost reflects quality", I don't think I can do almost double what others charge.
