Description of Work: I apologize for the late entry of this review. This is a follow up to my 1st review in 2012 when I had Tim Holt out a second time. The first time I had my locks re keyed (new deadbolts) after my purchase of the home. I then had interior work done by several different vendors for which I allowed entry using a lockbox. My second time working with Tim Holt was when I had my locks re-keyed again after all the interior work was complete. I saved the locksets from the original work in case I have more work done in the future and want to use the lock box again. The second visit was similar to the first and I am still very pleased with Holt Lock and Key. In addition, at the second visit I had asked for a method to enable locking my sliding glass door but leave it open slightly for fresh air. Tim had brought with him an adjustable bar that we were going to use. However, it wasn't going to be an optimal solution so Tim suggested that he could drill holes in the metal frame and add a security lock on the top frame. With a second set of holes, the same lock could be used to keep the door locked in place while allowing fresh air in. We used this method instead. There was no charge for the bar mechanism that I did not use. In addition, when I noticed that the keys to main doors for the new deadbolts were very, very similar to the keys for the prior deadbolts I asked if I could have keys that were more "different" so they would be easier to distinguish (if I want to use the lockbox to allow vendor entry when I am not at home). Tim showed me how even though the keys looked very similar, they were indeed different. However, I still wasn't comfortable with the similarity -- so Tim installed a different set of dead bolts in my front and back doors.

I felt very comfortable with him in my home. He was very professional and personable. I would ask him to do it again, should the need occur.

+ -1 moreFirst really, really cold morning in January. I couldn't get into my garage to get my car to go to work -- the lock was stuck and would not turn to open. Called Holt and Tim came out in about half an hour to visit me. I happened to be located near where their shop. Tim later told me has several clients on my block, which is cool, as I like to help out local businesses. Tim got the door open in about 1 minute flat, seriously. I was amazed. Though I paid the usual service trip cost, he felt bad the visit was so short and stated he would waive the service fee on the next visit. He was friendly and professional, and I plan to use Holt again when I get my locks re-done. Thanks!

+ 0 moreTim installed an entry door (with a new lock/deadbolt) and a storm door for us and replaced the lock/deadbolt on another entry door. Tim was great to work with and was friendly and engaging throughout our dealings. He came to our house to measure our doors and suggested to us that we didn't need to replace our garage entry door, which we had initially been planning to do. He instead found a way to repair some damage that had been done to the door, which saved us a significant amount of money on buying a new door and installing it. Tim was also great about going above and beyond to get the job done right. The previous owners had done a poor job of installing our front door frame, which necessitated additional trips back and forth for Tim as he acquired some additional wood and tools to cut an additional bit of framing to make the door fit properly and have the trim align correctly. We were impressed and appreciative that he took the time to address an unforseen problem and to make it right even though it was entirely the fault of the sloppy work of the previous owners and it required extra trips and time from him. He was friendly, honest and helpful throughout the experience. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Holt Lock & Key again and I will be recommending him to any friends of mine who need lock or door work done. His friendliness makes him fun to work with, and he proved his commitment to quality work when he came and put in the extra time cleaning up our door frame issues.

On the day of our appointment, Tim had called very apologetic asking if he could re-schedule since he was held up at another job. He came out the very next day, at which time, he was very punctual. We are very happy with the quality of work done. We would not hesitate to call Holt Lock and Key for another job. We would also recommend them to anyone.

+ -1 moreTim rekeyed locks for us. I thought he was knowledgeable and responsive to our desire to balance cost and work. He didn't up-sell us (such as pushing us to replace locks rather than re-key them). However, he was also in a hurry this day. He re-keyed one lock but only told us at the end that the lock was on it's last legs (therefore in my opinion it would have been better to replace it rather than pay to re-key a failing lock).

+ -1 moreTim was great! He was helpful and patient. I provided my own handles and then realized at the last minute that I needed mismatching handles for my front door. He was so patient in allowing me to go and get them while he was there! When I couldn't find it at the first store, he suggested where I should go and he would wait for me. I was able to get it all done in good time and back to him to apply. Once he had it all there, he realized we needed two minor accessories that were a specialty item. He said he would call his supplier and call me back the next day. He did and will be back to install both. That and he was very kind and helpful and his attention to detail was very good. I will definitely use him in the future for my locksmith needs.

He called an hour prior to our appointment to let me know he would be running late and arrived about an hour after our original appointment time. Tim assessed our current locks and gave us his recommendations on how to proceed. Tim installed everything quickly, cut extra keys and reinforced our locks where needed. Overall, Tim was very professional and installed high quality hardware that looks great.

+ -1 moreCalled Tim on a Saturday at about 1:30 and he said he was just pulling into his house after completing the last job of the day. Explained my problem and he wanted to know if I needed it worked on today or if I'd like to schedule it for the next week. I asked if it could be done today and he said he'd be right over. He arrived in about 30 minutes and was able to fix the problem with the stripped lower screw hole and make adjustment to the strike plate so the bolt closed. Total time was about 45 minutes.
Description of Work: Problems with the back door dead bolt not closing and the plate in the door being loose because of the lower screw hole being stripped.

+ -1 moreI called Holt Lock on Tuesday to schedule them to replace the front door and side door locks Thursday morning at 9:30 AM. Holt said he was busy that day but he could have one of his people provide the service. He did not give any indication that the person providing the service was not part of his company. This Thursday morning at about 9:40 AM when he should have been on site I received a call from a different locksmith saying Holt had just called him at 9:20 AM to inform him about the job and that the earliest he could be there was 10:30 AM. Since I chose Holt Lock because of the good ratings on Angie's List I was very reluctant to go with a different locksmith particularly when he would be an hour late. I declined to have the alternate locksmith come out. I feel the communication and service was poor from Holt Lock. I had tried to be flexible about the appointment date and time. This is not something where I had to have the locks changed immediately. I could have delayed it for a week or a different time if that would have worked out. I answered no as to whether I would use them again but I can't say their locksmithing was poor. I can only say that they didn't communicate well and were not prompt.

I probably was a little overwhelmed in the moment but now I'm glad he pointed out the issues he did. We'll likely have him back soon to replace our exterior garage door, which he showed me had clearly already been broken into in the past, something we hadn't noticed.

I took his suggestions, bought a new steel door online, and he and one of his sons offered to get the job done on a Sunday morning. They were on time, did a great job and the door looks great...and the locks were keyed as I specified. I would use them again.
Description of Work: I've used this company in the past and I highly recommend them! This time I needed to have a door and frame replaced, along with the lock. Thus, the cost was more than I'd expected, but it was needed and well worth it. They are just wonderful and very knowledgeable!
