Copperfield Chimney Sweeps & Repair

Having been left with my parents' house to get ready to sell, I had been told that there was something wrong with the chimney and fireplaces. I had had two estimates from other companies which ranged from doing almost nothing to tearing the entire thing down and staring over. I was supposed to tell THEM what was wrong with it. Copperfield came and checked it all out, explaining everything they did. Wonderful people- wonderful job. I cannot recommend them highly enough!

Everything went great. Prior to the repair, Victor spent a lot of time explaining what needed to be done, why it needed to be done, and how he would do it. On the day of the job, he and his co-worker showed up on time, did everything he said he would, and cleaned up. Victor was courteous, professional, and friendly before, during, and after the job.

He was very knowledgeable, and professional. He did a nice job of inspecting our fireplace and also offered a suggestion and a solution for repairing some loose bricks.

Mr. Silelley, owner and operator, was twenty minutes early. He was honest, skillful, diligent, and very organized.

We contacted Victor Skelley, Owner and Operator of Copperfield Chimney Sweeps, because of his outstanding Angie's List rating. Although we interrupted his birthday party, he was very cordial and we made a date for the work. He arrived on time and was concerned that we had a large (approximately 250 to 300-pound) metal fireplace insert. He moved it enough to be able to work in the fireplace/chimney area. He thoroughly cleaned the chimney and, per our request, he also checked the chimney cap. Through the years, that had rusted and it needed replacement. Victor replaced it with a new chimney cap. Victor did not find other "problems" with the chimney and fireplace. Indeed, he indicated that the chimney and fireplace are in beautiful condition. Victor was the consummate professional and my wife and I were thoroughly satisfied with his work. The only thing that he overlooked was to have not taken the old chimney cap for disposal. That is very minor; it was only an oversight. We will definitely engage Victor's services again in the future.

Vic was punctual and explained very well the work he was going to do and why.

Prompt, polite, positive. I have used Jack Pixley in the past, and was always lectured about how bad my chimney is. I have had no reason to suspect my chimney is risky or faulty, so wanted a second opinion, because I was wondering if I was being pushed to buy extra repair services. Copperfield said the chimney was fine. On a personal level, I preferred the personality of Copperfield to the personality of the Pixley sweep. That is highly subjective, so take it as you will!

Victor was prompt, professional, and very informative. We talked through all the options for making the chimney's "critter-proof", discussed the operation of the fireplaces, and reviewed the health and maintainence of our gutters. His did good work and keep the house/floors clean.

Vic is a fantastic sweep, and we felt immensely safer after his service. The fires were easier to keep lit, also!

I called a few weeks prior to the appointment and asked if they could clean and inspect the fireplace and chimney and also look at the chimney cap since we had had squirrels get into the house through the chimney several weeks prior to this. Victor arrived about 15 minutes early and got to work right away. Since he arrived in a snowstorm, he laid down tarps so he wouldn't track in snow. He identified the problem with the flue and was able to fix it on the spot. He then went outside and checked the chimney cap and replaced it with a cap he had in his truck. I was really impressed that he was able to replace the chimney cap during a snowstorm. My only complaint was that he didn't take the old cap with him. We found it in the yard after the snow melted.

I have owned a duplex built in 1890 for over 9 years and the unit that I rent has a fireplace and I needed it cleaned and inspected. Victor walked me through the top to bottom inspection of the chimney. From the basement where the ash dump is located, through the firebox and damper, and inspection of the exterior brick where the chimney exits the house through the roof. This man is very knowledgeable! He talked me out of some expensive repair of the brick work on the chimney as it exits the house. He suggested the roofing contractor who will be replacing my shingles to flash a little higher up the brick chimney. Dressing up the brickwork may actually make it less structurally sound and since the chimney is already 120 years old why fix something that isn't broken. The only extra was sealing off the ash dump which is a potential fire hazard. He also told me some of the dirty tricks of the chimney industry. He gave me a thorough analysis of my chimney and fireplace and he was right on time, left the house clean and is an outstanding craftsmen.

It was very easy to schedule an appointment since it was an off time so I was happy to be able to get the work done right away. Whenever we used the fireplace, the basement would fill with smoke and the whole house would get a smokey smell. We didn't use the fireplace a lot for that reason and we wanted to figure out the cause so we could use it more. Before I even had a chance to mention the problem, Victor asked if we had smoke issues. He explained that the low hood on the chimney blocked the smoke coming up and was getting sucked back down the basement chimney. He knew we had an issue just by looking at it from the outside. He offered to replace the hood with a screen to keep animals out and I agreed it needed to be done. He took a look at our basement fireplace even though I wasn't having that one cleaned and we learned another valuable piece of information. He told me that because the fireplace is below the frost line, it will never be usable as a wood burning fireplace. He suggested considering a gas insert for the basement. The door to our ash chute was broken and not up to code. He offered to brick over the opening upstairs to alleviate the problem and suggested doing the same in the basement at a later time. I had never liked the ash chute and found it to be more of a nuisance than anything. So I was thrilled that he had the tools and the time to do that as well. Victor did a great job and really knew what he was talking about. I felt informed after he left. We have used our fireplace several times since it was cleaned and we no longer have an issue with smoke. I also don't feel like I have to worry about the house starting on fire. Victor was professional, knowlegable and great to work with. I will hire him the next time we need the chimney cleaned - and I know when I need to do that because he told me!

Victor was a pro from first contact to leaving my house after the job was completed. He explained over the phone what he would be doing and what it would cost. He showed up a few minutes before the appointment time, laid down a tarp to catch any mess that was created, and got to work. After about an hour, he was finished. He explained how my chimney worked, discussed air flow concerns that we had and had great things to say about the chimney construction, as well as suggestions on the best ways to burn wood for this fireplace. Also, he's very knowledgeable and friendly, listened attentively to all my questions and gave honest answers. Unfortunately, I only go through about 2 cords of wood every ten years, but when I do need to have someone work on my fireplace again, it will be Victor, no questions asked.

I thought the cable that opens the flu to the fireplace chimney had broken. Opens the chimolator (sp?) to allow the draft or close it to avoid heat loss. Victor brought all the stuff to either repair or replace but didn't need it. The cable was intact, he just adjusted, then cleaned the filthy chimney. Instructed me on some techniques to use when it has been icy or snowy so the chimalator works properly. He was very responsive. Mary his wife who makes the appts was very considerate as well. I explained I might be on a conference call depending on how long repair would take. In response, when Victor was able to come earlier, she called to see if it was okay.

They were nice and neat. They did not leave a mess at all. Their price was fair. They came out and did the job, I was very pleased when they left. The two men who came to work were very professional. I would use them in the future. They saw a few places where the chimney needed to be repaired in the future, they told me it would be okay for now but that I could call them to come out and do the small repair in the summer.

Victor showed up as scheduled and was very considerate of our house. There was no mess when he left. He showed me a lot of details about the fireplaces and instructed me in the best way to use them. It was very informative and he seems quite knowledgeable.

Victor lived up to his billing from all other reviews on this site. We moved into a new home (built 1941) two weeks ago. Victor thoroughly inspected and cleaned 2 chimneys. Recommended one safety repair. Cleaned out a couple squirrel carcasses and made some great recommendations. Very personable. Have complete faith and trust in his work. Even was honest about not needing to come out for annual visits, just pending amount of wood burned. $10 Angie's coupon was an added bonus.

It went very well. Be prepared to wait a week or more as they are quite busy this time of year. They showed up exactly at the appointment time.

From the initial phone contact to the clean up process, the service was excellent. Victor arrived on time, explained the process and did a thorough cleaning and inspection of the chimney and fireplace. He offered some great advice on maintenance and burning. The outside air intake and flue opening were cleaned and lubricated also. The price was exactly what was quoted and a fair value for the work performed. I'd have no reservations about recommending this company to anyone.

Once the appointment was set, Copperfield called and confirmed. They had an opening at an earlier tiem, which I was able to accept. No mess, no fuss - I wouldn't have known that they were there. Awesome job
