Copperfield Chimney Sweeps & Repair

After being subject to high pressure scare tactics and a $9000 bid for a new liner from another chimney repair company, I hired Copperfield. $315 for a simple cleaning and they clarified that the liner business is a scam, my chimney is too small to accept one, and it's fine the way it is.

A few weeks ago I went up on my roof to check a leak and noticed brick flakes coming off my old chimney. Victor and his staff made a very competitive estimate, and were able to schedule a date much earlier than other companies. My new chimney was finished in just a few hours and looks great!

It went well, they sealed an ash dump that was not to code, replaced the chimney cap on top to try and fix a problem with draw. They were professional and personable. Price seemed high for the amount of time involved.

Unfortunately i tried to get service/cleaning for my two fireplaces before it got too far into fall, Apparently Eagan is too far to drive this time of year and they turned me down.

As a Real Estate professional (agent and investor), I have used many chimney cleaning and inspection companies. Copperfield is by far the most knowledgeable, honest, and cost-effective company of all of them. Most recently, we listed a beautiful home in West St Paul that had a few bricks with cosmetic issues on the exterior and some firebrick that needed repair in one of the two fireplaces. The buyer hired a "chimney inspector" who claimed that all of the interior brick liners needed to be replaced with metal liners and the entire chimney rebuilt at a cost of over $15k. Anyone who knows about chimney construction knows that metal promptly deteriorates and expands and contracts with heat and would not be the way to fix a chimney even if needed. BEWARE of chimney companies claiming this to take your hard earned dollars. Many of them are being sued right now for doing so. We hired Copperfield again to give us an honest evaluation of the chimneys. They did a video scope, identified a few minor items that did need to be addressed (existing liner was in great shape), cleaned the chimney, and provided a detailed report and guaranteed bid for repair. We have used Copperfield for multiple inspections and repairs. They are always honest, fair, and timely. We highly recommend them and continue to use them and refer our clients to them when they need assistance with a chimney.

These guys are so professional and curteous and we're very careful not to track soot or debris through my house. Very thorough and explained everything they were doing and even gave me a refresh on how to use my fireplace; you could tell they were really proud of their work. They even scrubbed my brick clean!

I got a reminder call day before. Arrived on time for appt. Easy to work with and very professional. They left the area as clean as it was when they started. Viktor also advised to remove a chimney cap that he said was the cause of smoke in house. I had them remove the cap and put just a screen on. That has worked just as he said, very little smoke in the house.

Victor is very knowledgeable and professional. He inspected our chimney and found it OK to use after finding only a non-hazardous crack in the terra cotta with solid masonry behind it. A prior sweep said that the chimney wasn't safe and tried to sell us a $6000 cure.Victor is honest and that can't be said for all of his competitors.

Arrived on time and was very thorough. Talked through the structure and quality of our fireplace and gave a quote up-front. Found one structural issue with our chimney - and showed it to me - with an explanation of the issue, a firm quote, and a recommendation to address it in the spring. Laid down drop cloths and made virtually no mess.

We just have moved into a lovely and well-maintained 1918 home. The previous owners did use the chimney, but we wanted it inspected. Victor Skelley and his assistant worked as a team to clean and inspect. They arrived on time and were great with controlling the ash dust that comes with cleaning a chimney. It was like they were never there. Mr. Skelley (owner) self-reported that he'd been in the business about 30 years and it shows. His assistant (I am bad with names) did a great job of reviewing how to use the chimney, check the draft, and how to adjust. He also pointed out the wood grate was very heavy and suggested buying a lighter one to make fireplace cleaning easier. He went over all the options with the old ash dump and went with me to inspect the basement. He gave me all the options (just lay heat tile or cinderblock over it as well as seal it in properly). I went with the seal because a previous owner had done renovation in the basement and covered where the ashes were supposed to come out. So I chose not to risk it. And while we were investigating the basement, the assistant noticed a great thing on the furnace, so really knew his trade. Mr. Skelley and I worked on the outside and discussed options for roof cap. He really knew what to do about draft, code, and proper height (as our chimney is double with fireplace and furnace). He not only suggested what would work but also what was aesthetically pleasing for our particular home. We are also getting roof work done, so he gave me details about what the roofers need to do with flashing and saddle. He also repaired a crack on the crown. All is set for the cold weather season, but our chimney will need repointing (or new "mortar" but the bricks are great. So he gave an estimate and we will have this done in the spring. Overall, the quality of knowledge, care and affinity for chimneys, and the goal to get the fireplace in safe working order and ease of use (we also got a thumbs up on design and fireplace screen) were met and I learned a lot. And with this company, it is not just a job, but a vocation.

It went great. He was professional, friendly and very enthusiastic about his work. His assistant removed an old, broken grate for me and carried it out to the alley--- it was too heavy for me to move, so I really appreciated that. I've used his services periodically over the years and will continue to do so.

Victor Skelley had received rave reviews from a number of our neighbors. We were so happy that we ended up hiring him to clean and inspect our chimney. He is very knowledgeable, dedicated, and trustworthy. His prices are also quite reasonable. In addition to cleaning and checking the chimney, he installed a cap on top of the chimney outside. Very pleasant to work with, clearly knowledgeable and experienced. We recommend him highly! We'll never use any other chimney sweep company in the future.

Copperfield cleaned the chimney and inspected with a camera. This camera was an enclosed iPhone connected to an iPad. They correctly noted that the smoke chamber parging had failed and needed to be repaired. The inspection of the clay flue tiles and the joints indicated that all was well and no lining work needed to be done. Victor gave me a bid for the parging that was very reasonable, but later decided to decline doing the work, due to lack of experience. I called another company, who insisted that they needed to do another video inspection. They had a very sophisticated camera and showed me every detail of the chimney and took pictures. There were definite joint failures between many of clay flues, which needed repair in addition to the smoke chamber. If I had relied solely on Copperfield's inspection, I would've been at risk from high temperature gas leakage. While I feel I got some value for the cleaning, this was a premium price inspection that was inferior to that from other companies. I sent Victor an email, asking for a partial refund or credit toward future services, but never received a response.

It went great. Smooth and straight forward conversation about the job with great consideration of trying to prevent soot getting into the house as this is a very dirty job. No up selling of services or recommendations for additional work. Actually a lot of good advise from a true professional with years of experience on how to take care of a wood burning fireplace for years of service. "See you when you have burned 3 cords of wood" vs the see you every year I have had from other chimney service providers in the past. Highly recommend for professionalism, straight forward conversation and advise.

Victor covers surfaces with plastic before cleaning to protect the floors. He left the chimney and fireplace very clean and inspected everything. We have used Copperfield Chimney Sweeps for 10 years, usually at least every other year. We are always pleased with the work and will hire them in the future.

They clean our chimney every year, and I'd highly recommend them. They consistently do good work, they don't try to sell unnecessary services, and they're very thorough when they do a cleaning.
