Platinum Remodeling & Handyman Services

General Remodeling, Handyman Services, Kitchen and Bath Remodeling,

About us

Platinum Remodeling and Handyman Services was founded in February of 2005 when I bought out House Doctors-Southwest Metro. I had been the operations manager of House Doctors since it's inception in late 2002. I ran all of the day to day operations, estimated, scheduled, and managed all projects. When I started Platinum, I hired three of my previous co-workers and we never missed a beat! I have a degree in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Strategies from Iowa State University. This business degree paired with my experience and passion for residential remodeling made this venture a perfect fit. I am the third generation of Shonkwilers to own a construction company. I grew up in the remodeling and construction industry working for my father's company, Shonkwiler Brothers Construction. My father got started working with my grandfather and his company, Shonkwiler Construction. As of September 2007 my father has joined my team. I'm excited to bring his 32+ years in the residential construction industry, unmatched craftsmanship, integrity, and small town Iowa work ethic to the Twin Cities! I have acquired great employees with unique skill sets allowing us to complete a wide variety of projects. All employees are highly capable and take pride in a job well done. My employees are all "handy", but each has their own specialties and I use the employee that best suits your project. All employees have undergone background checks and drug tests. They are bonded and covered by workers compensation. I also have great subcontractors that I use on large projects and where licensed professionals (electricians, machinists, plumbers) are needed. We also use specialty subcontractors for things like large drywall projects, Cambria or stone countertops, floor refinishing, landscaping.....among many others. All of our work comes with a one year warranty on the labor, all materials carry the manufacturer's warranty. All subcontractors warrant their work as well. I have a Minnesota Residential Remodeler's license. The company is covered by liability insurance, worker's compensation and the employees are bonded.

From early spring Josh has been working at sealing the roof, patiently and persistently returning time and time and time again to get at the source of the leak. The work is very reasonably charged, given the amount of effort and planning required. This time Josh and team will be partially rebuilding the roof.

I think we finally got it taken care of. This time we were able to re-shingle and correctly flash the area where the porch roof meets the house. Of course, if you notice anything that requires further attention, you know how to get a hold of us. Thanks for your patience with this whole process of solving the mystery!

Thank you for the review and the kind words! You have been great to work with as well. We always see landlords that don't care about quality and craftsmanship and just try to do the bare minimum to appease the city or the tenant. It is refreshing when people take care of their properties and have a pride in ownership!

Meet with Chad from Platinum on Monday June 17th at 8 am. for him to look and measure our kitchen for a complete remodel. Did not hear back from him till July 5th via email. Said he was sorry he did not get our estimate back to us yet and that he would not be able to do so till he got back after July 15th. He was going to be out of town. I waited till after the 15th and emailed him three different times saying we where still interested in getting his estimate still. Never heard from him again. We went with a different contractor to say the least.

Joe was the first person from Platinum that came to our house and gave us an estimate. He was very careful to consider different options so that we could determine the cause of the leak from our shower through the ceiling below. He was not totally sure whether the grout was the problem or not, but because the grouting had been done poorly in the past with no seal, we agreed to start there. Joe scheduled one day to take the grout out, and replace. He was always very prompt with all subsequent visits. It took him longer than he expected to get the old grout out. So he needed to schedule another day to finish that part of the job. He was willing to work with us on that, and wanted to get it done soon, so we wouldn't have to wait. The next day was the Fourth of July and he was willing to work that day, but he worked it out so that he could come the day after that. He finished the grouting and cleaned up well after himself. He came out the next week to seal the grout and cut a hole in the ceiling so that when we started using the shower, we could determine if the new grout fixed the problem. After using the shower for a week, we were happy to see that the replaced grout did the job and we were ready for the ceiling to be patched. Dick did the patching. He was very friendly and also on time. He came out twice. once to patch and once to complete the knockdown texture. We were not home when he finished the job so were not able to look at it or discuss the finished product. The patch job was 'good enough'. I knew we were taking a chance by patching rather than doing the whole area, and Joe had indicated that it's not always exactly the same. We have not painted over that area yet, so maybe it will look better after that. Overall, I would say that the staff was very friendly, and prompt. We were a little surprised that it took 5 trips out to complete the job.

Dick from Platinum Remodeling visited me first thing in the morning. He was extremely friendly and got to work right away. The whole fix took about 2 hours, with a couple trips to the hardware store in-between. I was really happy with his work, and extremely pleased with the price. I tried a couple other handyman services on Angie's List and was blown off by all the others because of the small job. I appreciated that Platinum took the time to visit me and complete the work. There was good communication with Anna during the entire process so I knew when the work would take place. I will *definitely* use them in the future. Thanks, Platinum Remodeling!

From the moment we spoke to Anna until Joe came and fixed our problem Platinum Remodeling was nothing short of professional throughout the process. Anna was accommodating as we had to change our service date more than once but she continually reworked their schedule to get us on the list. When Joe arrived he quickly found that a few screws would not fix our problem so he called the team and came up with an inventive solution to make the necessary adjustments. For the first time since moving in we cannot hear someone walking on the 2nd story. We would definitely recommend Platinum Remodeling and will use them again in the future!

I called and left a message, they returned my call within the next day, they explained that it would be a few weeks before they could come out and give me an estimate, we set up an appointment, and they emailed me a very professional contact email. Within a week, they emailed again and explained that they are extremely over booked with current jobs. I greatly appreciated their professionalism of not wanting to over promise and under deliver. At this time, we decided to go with another company.

This was our first remodel ever so we were nervous about how it would go and whether or not the project would stick to budget. Platinum was fantastic right from the start. They were very professional and attentive as we went through the estimating process. Their estimate was lower than others we received and they were very easy to work with. The remodel went smoothly with regular updates and detailed information about any "surprises" that were uncovered during the demo along with options available to us. We lived in the house during most of the remodel so we appreciated that the team cleaned up at the end of each day, were friendly and courteous to us and always provided us with detailed progress updates whenever we asked. All members of the team, including subcontractors, were professional, knowledgeable and friendly which made the process easier and less stressful. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better experience. We are so glad we found Platinum. We love the finished product (and the fact that it came in under budget) and can't wait to start on the next project with them!
Description of Work: Platinum helped us with several remodeling projects in our 1956 ranch style home in Shorewood. They removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room, added new hardwood floors, refinished existing hardwood floors to match the new hardwood, painted and helped us add a nursery for our new baby.

It went very well. This was one of those jobs that got more challenging as more boards were removed. The damage was extensive and Platinum kept me in the loop as the situation developed. They were courteous, professional and got the job done quickly and without much disruption at all. It was a great experience. I would definitely use them for future projects.

Platinum Remodeling was quick and courteous. When I first called Josh I thought the patch would be a pretty big project, it turned out to be a rather minor but Job was great about treating as if it was just as important anyway. His sister Anna came to do the actual patching, she knocked it out over a couple days and it looks great. We ended up only paying the minimum charge of $150 but we were so impressed with Platinum Remodeling we will be calling on them again.

We always say "it is your house and your money, so have it done however you want". I wonder if the estimates were different prices because the scopes were different, we see this all the time...people comparing apples to basketballs and then deciding based on the price rather than asking for a revised estimate with ,arching scopes of work.

It went fairly well. There was some confusion as to whether or not we were supposed to remove the furniture. I had been assured that was not necessary but when they came they said it all had to be removed. The gentlemen moved the furniture to the garage. I have to be honest, had I realized we would not have access to the garage for 6 days in the middle of winter (of course it snowed) I would have waited to do this until spring. But it was done, and done well. I was a little nervous because their bid was half of what I had received from another company but they did the same thing for half the price.

They returned our call promptly on a Friday, explained that it would cost $150.00 for a diagnostic fee that could be applied to any repairs, and Joe was at our house on Monday morning right on time. He took a look at the drain and at the ceiling and decided he needed to cut into the ceiling at the spot where the water stain had developed. He carefully draped the area around the location where he would be cutting -- no dust or mess spreading around the rest of the kitchen. Upon opening the ceiling, he determined that our "fix" had actually stopped the leak. He repaired the hole in the drywall and left the kitchen spotless -- he even mopped the floor under the location where he had worked. He asked if we wanted someone to come back to sand the drywall patch and/or paint the ceiling. We said we could follow up with that ourselves. He explained that we would need to put several coats of Kilz on the water stain since it was likely to come through the drywall mud. Because there was nothing to "repair," he just charged the basic $150.00 diagnostic fee. Joe was careful, personable, knowledgeable and thoroughly professional. He left cards for the owner and the project manager in case we wanted to follow up on anything. If we need any other work done, we would contact them in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: We noticed water stains on the kitchen ceiling below the 2nd floor shower stall drain. After some attempts at self-repair of the shower drain, it seemed as though we still had a leak. We called Platinum based on the good reviews and asked if someone could come out and determine what was going on.

Having read the reviews, called Platinum in early January. They were apparently on vacation. I called them again and was told that I would be contacted by Chad. Chad did finally contact me and scheduled me for the end of January as he was just too busy. It was probably due to all of the great reviews. Anyway, Chad did come out on the appropriate time and the appropriate date. I showed him my kitchen and he looked at the layout and took some notes and measurements. He asked me my budget and I gave him the budget. I did this partially because I had seen some of the reviews and saw the dollar estimates for the work done and so it appeared to fit in that budget. Well, Chad left and I yet to hear from him. My guess is that he thought that I was too unrealistic in what I wanted and that he would be wasting his time. Fair enough!

Thanks for the feedback. The budget and size of project is never a factor for us. We do small projects with a minimum size requirement for the trip of $150. We always say "it is your house and your money, so you can do whatever you want". If the budget is unrealistic and what the client wants done can't be done to a level we are comfortable warrantying then we will be up front about that. In this case, we dropped the ball on keeping the client posted on the status of the estimate. This project has since been estimated and sent to the client for review.

We were frustrated for a long time with our current Mud Room situation. The area was tight and cramped and it was also where our laundry was designed to be. We decided that we wanted to move the laundry up stairs to open up and give more space to our mud room so we started getting quotes. For those that have gone down the quote getting process you can relate with how frustrating this process can be....we went through 4 diffident companies to come in and give us a bid and we felt Platinum was by far the most professional and easiest to work with so we went with them. As part of the Quote process we decided to add in lighting in our Family Room and some patch work to our Kitchen. Once they started the work we were very impressed with them. They were on time....respectful of our children....and very easy to talk with. The thing we liked the best was how the handle the situations that come up that you cant plan for....they do a great job of offering up solutions that fit within our budget and scope of work. The team did a great job of communicating with us where they were are at in the process and what things we could expect to see as the job progressed. Summing it up.....their bid was in the ball park of everyone else....they did the job in the timeliness they spelled out to us in the bid....they are very professional and easy to work with....and the quality of their work was exceptional!!

Construction took approximately 5 months over the course of 2012. All the staff were friendly and professional. Excellent craftsmanship in all the details (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, tiling). Chad and Josh were always available and helpful with questions. We will definitely use Platinum again and highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Remodel of second story attic space into master suite - bathroom, custom wood desk, reading area, closet space and bedroom space. Nothing existed upstairs prior to the remodel with the exception of sprayfoam insulation and a basic wood subfloor. Added dormers off the back of the house to gain additional height for bathroom and custom desk. Added bathroom with tiled shower. Included installation of Elm wood flooring (wood obtained from Wood from the Hood in Minneapolis). Replaced original sewer stack as part of the remodel. We wanted to update the lighting and cabinets in our kitchen, as well as the ceiling in our open kitchen/dining room/living room. We researched several companies before deciding on Platinum. We got a quick response from our initial inquiry to Platinum, as opposed to several other companies who never responded or took some time. Chad came out and listened to what we wanted accomplished and got a very detailed estimate and timeline to us within a few days. Because they had a lot of pre-holiday work, we did have to wait a few weeks to get them in. They were, however, able to start the project earlier than we had originally expected. These are the items we had taken care of: 1) Old florescent ceiling fixture in kitchen was removed and replaced with four can lights. 2) Two pendant fixtures were wired and installed over the peninsula counter. 3) One pendant fixture was wired and installed over the sink. 4) All of the above had switches installed in convenient location. 5) We have 17 cabinets and 6 drawers in our kitchen. They are good quality but 20 yrs old and needed refinishing and repainting. The painting crew took the hardware off, removed all doors and facings (including the panels on our refrigerator) and took them to their shop to be repainted. They then hand painted all surfaces and peninsula panels left in the kitchen. Everything was returned and reinstalled professionally. 6) One drawer was broken and that was repaired. 7) The entire huge ceiling of living room, dining room, kitchen was "popcorn" style. The drywallers scraped that all off and repainted the entire ceiling. 8) The light fixture over our dining table had to be rewired so that we didn't have to have the huge swag we had been forced into because it was formerly misplaced. 9) They also repaired a corner gouge in a wall beside our stairs. This was all accomplished in a little over a week. The electricians, drywallers, and painters were all friendly, competent, and professional. Everyone arrived exactly on time (or even early) and worked steadily without interruption. They cleaned up everyday and left the area in a state we could live with that evening (even through the messy ceiling process.) Everything turned out beautifully. We were especially pleased with the cabinets. They are no paint lines or streaks. They look like new. We were also very impressed with the quick responses we got from Josh and Chad when we had any questions or concerns. This company is customer-service oriented for sure. They weren't the cheapest, but they weren't priced out-of-range either. We will definitely use them again.

ware of it Josh came out and listened to what I wanted, which was to get my house ready to sell or rent out. He looked at what I was thinking of doing and came up with the most cost-effective way of doing things: Walls with five layers of wallpaper and old sheet rock that wouldn't release the old wallpaper. I thought he'd have to replace all the sheet rock. He suggested using a thick textured, paintable wallpaper instead, saving a bunch of money and the result looks great. He showed me how to make the kitchen look great without doing a complete gutting of the kitchen. The bathroom went from being a little scary to outstanding: the tile work in the tub surround was excellent and really makes the old tile floor look great--and the refinished tub looks amazing. The team of workers, who are mostly family and friends of the owners, is really exceptional. The painting quality is as good as professional painters I have hired for other rooms. The tile guy, Joe, is an artist as well--he made great decisions about how to frame the tub and the accent line looks amazing. Dale, the electric, plumbing, carpentry guy is meticulous and efficient. My only concern would be this: I was in no particular hurry to get the job done and am really laid back. I told them this and for me, it was no problem if they needed to interrupt my job to get other jobs done; but if you are on a tight schedule, make sure they are aware of it and can manage to get the job completed. (Again, this wasn't a problem for me, because I was in no hurry--and they knew that and I think they gave me a deal because of it...so i hesitate to even mention this.)
Description of Work: Kitchen: Replaced counters, put in new cabinets with counter tops, replaced appliances (which I bought and had delivered), installed tile back splash, wallpaper removal and painting walls, replaced light fixture, moved plumbing and electrical fixtures. Outdoor: Removed existing deck. Bathroom: Removed wallpaper, repaired water damaged sheet rock, replaced plumbing fixtures, replaced light fixture, re-tiled tub surround, re-finished tub, added tub door, painting. Hallway going upstairs: re-did walls--repaired holes, replaced hand rail, used textured and paintable wallpaper to cover walls that were covered with multiple layers of unremovable wallpaper. removed popcorn texture, repainted all trim, ceiling and doors. repaired light fixture.

Thanks for the review. It's too bad when customer's get into weird situations like this due to inexperienced contractors getting in over their head on a project. However, I'm glad you guys trusted us to come in and complete the bathroom and get you a functioning main bathroom again in time for the holidays!

Great! Starting out there was some delay in responsiveness, but part of that was us. After the work began, Josh and Chad were very responsive and quick with changes, etc. They pretty much stuck to the schedule, and the estimate stayed true. The crew is very nice, and considerate of the noise with our 6-month old. The outcome looks fantastic and completely changes our back room for the better. We'll use them again.
Description of Work: Platinum completely remodeled our back family room. We did 90% of the demo to save money, and they did the rest (removed a large built-in zero-clearance fireplace and hauled away). Constructed small landing and stairs, partially vaulted ceiling, drywall, redo electrical, install baseboard heating unit, install ceiling fan, and closed off the family room which was connected to a bonus room that we made back into a bedroom.

My wife and I have been searching for a contractor to do work on our kitchen and bathroom. We saw platinum on Angie's List they have pretty good reviews so we gave them a call. Chad came out and put a bid together for us. The bid was very detailed and easy to understand. Even during our time spent with Chad he suggested we get multiple bids from several different contractor. Several week's after our first meeting at our request Chad came back out and walk with us threw our home with us once again listening to our suggestions and helping us stay within our budget. We're looking to working with Platinum the second week of January 2013. We will let you know how it goes.
