Platinum Remodeling and Handyman Services was founded in February of 2005 when I bought out House Doctors-Southwest Metro. I had been the operations manager of House Doctors since it's inception in late 2002. I ran all of the day to day operations, estimated, scheduled, and managed all projects. When I started Platinum, I hired three of my previous co-workers and we never missed a beat! I have a degree in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Strategies from Iowa State University. This business degree paired with my experience and passion for residential remodeling made this venture a perfect fit. I am the third generation of Shonkwilers to own a construction company. I grew up in the remodeling and construction industry working for my father's company, Shonkwiler Brothers Construction. My father got started working with my grandfather and his company, Shonkwiler Construction. As of September 2007 my father has joined my team. I'm excited to bring his 32+ years in the residential construction industry, unmatched craftsmanship, integrity, and small town Iowa work ethic to the Twin Cities! I have acquired great employees with unique skill sets allowing us to complete a wide variety of projects. All employees are highly capable and take pride in a job well done. My employees are all "handy", but each has their own specialties and I use the employee that best suits your project. All employees have undergone background checks and drug tests. They are bonded and covered by workers compensation. I also have great subcontractors that I use on large projects and where licensed professionals (electricians, machinists, plumbers) are needed. We also use specialty subcontractors for things like large drywall projects, Cambria or stone countertops, floor refinishing, landscaping.....among many others. All of our work comes with a one year warranty on the labor, all materials carry the manufacturer's warranty. All subcontractors warrant their work as well. I have a Minnesota Residential Remodeler's license. The company is covered by liability insurance, worker's compensation and the employees are bonded.

Platinum was a great partner. They delivered as promised and the workmanship is high quality. I appreciated their open communication style and very clear timeline of what they hoped to accomplish each day of the three and a half day project. The bedroom works great with the new configuration and it is almost impossible to tell where Platinum changed things. The only thing that could have gone better was that the crew was a little late (20-30 minutes) the first day.

I spoke to Platinum Remodeling & Handyman Services on Mon., Aug. 22, 2016 and was surprised to learn that they were not even able to meet with me and my wife to provide a quote until "Late October", more than two months out. How knows if and when any accepted work might be able to be performed? Winter? Next Spring. I believe this level of backlog needs to be understood by Angie List clients and should possibly be stated on their web site and Angies List. It appears to be a waste of my time to have read their listing, reviews and leave them a message on their machine and to call again today. A greater than two month backlog just to meet and obtain a proposal seems like they are not prepared to serve their market as stated.

...or we are realistic with our clients right from the initial call and don't set expectations that we can't meet. If we get 20 calls a day from potential new clients we have learned how many to assign to each estimator so they don't get overwhelmed and allow them the time to properly care for each client and the projects they have in production. Depends how you want to look at it. Can our staff of 18 employees meet the needs of a metro area with 3 million residents- nope. I guess it is all perspective- do you have a glass half full or half empty kind of view on the world!!

It went extremely well. They also gave us estimates for other small projects we'll do in the future. The price was very reasonable and the customer service was outstanding. Anna is who I'm working with. She was extremely prompt with returning emails and phone calls. She gave us wonderful ideas for remodeling. I love the fact that they have so many women in their company. We would definitely use them for future projects.

Kara came out to take measurements, etc, she was on time, efficient, knowledgeable and professional. She drafted up plans for a proposed remodel, and we were required to pay for the time she spent drafting the plans unless we decided to use Platinum. The plans were good and we liked her ideas for spacial layout, though we preferred our proposed layout more. Kara followed up with us, was communicative and easy to work with. We ultimately decided to go with a less expensive contractor, although it was not significantly less expensive. Platinum's estimate was competitive and we seriously considered it. We would use them again in the future. We paid them for the plans that they put together.

I contacted Platinum Remodeling to help me install a shower in my bathroom (which was not as easy as it sounded). I have a nearly 100 year old house in south Minneapolis with one bathroom (and no shower). The bathtub sat under a roof eave with a height of only about 4.5 feet to the ceiling (not tall enough to put in a shower). The bathroom was too small to rearrange the fixtures so that a shower could go in without increasing the height of the roof. The plan was to put a dormer over that room (lift the roofline) so that the height of the ceiling over the bathtub could be raised to 6.5 feet. There were a few challenges to this project. 1) It was December and the entirety of the roof would need to come off and the bathroom reframed 2) This is my only bathroom (toilet) and that would need to be worked around. Platinum did an amazing job on this project. The schedule that the project manager (Kara) sent me up front was accurate and easy to follow. The level of attention to keeping my small house clean and orderly during the process was very high. The project manager was extremely responsive to any and all questions I had and was great at keeping me informed as to what was happening. It was also really nice that the project manager had a background in design and could help guide me through picking out fixtures and accessories. She let me be as involved or uninvolved as I wanted to be. Everyone I worked with was respectful and helpful and put me at ease dispute my nervousness of undertaking this large of a construction project. Also importantly, Platinum and their sub-contractors had experience in working with old houses and I had confidence they could deal with anything they found when opening up the walls. I am completely in love with the outcome. It really came out gorgeous. And bonus, I have a shower! :) I would not hesitate to use them again for future remodeling projects.

I'm so impressed with these folks (and I'm not that easy to please). Truly professional, responsive, helpful and affordable. As much as I hate when things break or go wrong in my home, I now feel like when it happens again, I have a company I trust and respect that I can call to get the work done well. They don't grumble about the work, they don't mess up my house, they don't linger around wracking up additional time to charge me and they are actually friendly - they seem to really like what they do and appreciate my business. Imagine that!!!! Platinum will be the only remodeling or handy-service that I'll call in the future.

A couple days after I submitted the online form describing the work I needed, Josh sent me an email saying he thought Platinum could do the work I described. He asked me for photos of my house, which I sent the same day. When I hadn't heard back from him 4 days later, I sent a follow-up email asking him about a time frame for moving forward. He never responded. It's been just over 5 weeks since I responded to his initial email, and I still have not gotten a response.

Sorry, not sure what happened here. Sometimes if you're forwarding pictures, if they are too big in size they will get caught in the server and never delivered. Or possibly the email mistakenly got deleted. We have had quite a large estimate waiting list since early spring, but we do try to reply to emails in a timely manner. We apologize for any inconvenience and we hope you were able to find someone to help you complete your project.

This is the third time we have used Platinum and each time has been excellent. Dick did a wonderful job of installing these faucets (replacing 15 year old). He cleaned up . Also installed towel bars, and paper towels which included masterful wall repair and painting. Clean up was very thorough. On top of that, Dick is a wonderful person to have in our home. Highly, highly recommend them. Let me add that Anna, was prompt about scheduling and updating--and she made arrangements for us to select Faucets at Ferguson. A great experience in every way.
Description of Work: Installed faucets in two bathrooms, kitchen (plus RO faucet) and laundry room.
So if you have ever seen that movie The Money Pit with Tom Hanks and Shelley Long you might understand how we felt a year ago. We had 100 year old house that was falling apart around us. We tried to tackle some of it ourselves but soon realized we were in way over our heads and needed professionals. We started accepting bids and out of the dozens of contractors we called, Platinum was the only one to show up, empathize with our situation, and come up with a real solution for our home. Josh came out first to assess the extent of the remodel. Kara came out the next week, listened to our ideas, and returned with a fantastic design that preserved everything we loved about the house but with modern amenities and a classic feel. After we finalized the design and financing, we set a demo date. We were told our project would take 8 weeks. Kara held our hands and guided us through everything. The first step was to pick out cabinetry and appliances. At first we felt really overwhelmed with all the kitchen choices but we gave her examples of what we liked. Kara was able to tell us right away what was feasible with our budget and either find a way to make it happen or give us something comparable we would be happy with. We were so grateful for her expertise in this area. Its really easy to look at a picture in a magazine of a kitchen you like. It is an entirely different animal trying to bring that kitchen to life. The CAD drawings Kara designed for the project covered everything from cabinets to electrical. When demo started, the crew pulled up and completely demolished our first floor. It was exhilarating. They were extremely efficient. If one was tearing down, another was cleaning up. There was never ONCE we showed up and they weren't working. Every day we came home it was like Christmas. Something was gone, torn up, removed, spaces opened, maple floors revealed. They even saved the antique whiskey bottles, toys, and papers they found in the walls for us and gave us updates every day. Once the walls were opened, the plumbers discovered our 100 year old plumbing was much worse than expected. We were told it would take a month to replace and would be without running water for that time. Kara worked with them to expedite the plumbing so that the project would not be delayed. We were back in the house in days. We had a few more surprises but the Platinum team just handled it. It was like having a think tank of remodeling experience in our house. Every time Kara called to notify us of a problem, she already had a team working on the solution. They took care of everything from the permits, demo, installs, plumbing, hvac, electricals, trimwork, floor refinishing, inspections, dealing with our bank, dealing with us, finishing, cleaning, everything. Josh told us at our first meeting they were a one stop shop and absolutely held up to that. We cannot stress enough how completely lost we would have been if we had never found Platinum. Being the remodeling neophytes we were, there was absolutely no way we would have been able to navigate our way through a project of this size without being financially crippled, losing our jobs, or both. Having a talented crew and an experienced Designer/Contractor at the helm was critical to this project's success. It is a huge relief to be able to go to work and know your house is in good hands. On the flipside, Platinum really had the opportunity to take advantage of us but never did. Their billing was always 100% accurate and we signed off on their work with each installment invoice. When an issue arose that we knew would put us over budget, Kara found a way to scrape pennies somewhere else to minimize the damage. They were extremely transparent with the work they were doing, why they were doing it that way, and the cost. When they came to a crossroads on a mechanical or design choice, they contacted us to give us the choice. Kara contacted us every day or two with updates and progress reports. Even our friends and family who warned us against contractors were impressed. In the end, they finished the project on time, a little over budget due to our design choices, and the final result far exceeded our expectations. Things we did not expect and appreciated: *Debris to travel down to the basement. Platinum covered all our valuables with plastic sheeting above and beyond. *We have an anxious dog and an escapist cat. They were very sensitive to not go in certain rooms or let our animals out. *When they were installing tile they noticed the floorboard joists did not connect. They took care of that so our entryway is structurally sound. *They picked a matte pet safe poly for our floors to keep them looking awesome longer, despite having a dog. *They resurrected our 100 year old maple floors. *The trimwork that Kara picked out and Marty installed is exquisite and is appropriate to the age and style of the home. *The tilework Josh put in absolutely perfect. Everything lines up and looks like a hotel spa bathroom. *The attention to detail. The kitchen cabinetry, tile, flooring, perfectly smooth walls and ceilings are flawless. *The Design. We knew it was going to be good but we had no idea. Tips for working with Platinum: *Once they start, they are a juggernaut through your home following that proposal like playbook. They work fast. Whatever you tell them, that is what they are going to do. Make sure you like it. Go over the proposal and design and know it like the back of your hand. *Have your own ideas but be open to theirs. They do this for a living and they are really good at it. *A picture is worth 1000 words. If you have an idea or something is off, just send a picture. *If you have the choice between saving a few bucks or getting what you want, just get what you want. The quality adds up and makes all the difference in final product. *Let Kara pick out as much as you are willing. She has excellent taste and knows what coordinates with what. *Kara was our Designer/General Contractor and took our project from start to finish. I'm sure they have several great pm's but we can vouch for her professionalism and expertise. *Houzz is very good for researching designs. Again, a picture is worth 1000 words. Take a screenshot and share with Kara. I think that covers everything. We highly recommend Platinum Remodeling. Not only are we so pleased to have a structurally and mechanically sound home, we are completely in love with the design. Our house is finally a home and we will be happy here for many years. We will be enthusiastically referring them to our friends look forward to working with them when we tackle our 2nd floor.

Happy to update and describe the "Meh" review. And you are 100 percent correct. I should have explained. Apologies. I called to schedule some fairly easy work of the handy man sort. Replacing a board that has rotted under a casement window. I was told that Platinum could "possibly" get to me sometime in July. I'm sorry. That sort of scheduling does NOT fall under the definition of a "Handyman". I would have loved to have used Platinum however I felt that sort of lead time was ridiculous. I will however update the review to a B. You are correct, Dick is amazing and I forgot about the wonderful work he did for us.

The last work we did over there was invoiced for in October 2012, why go out of the way to give a negative and non-descriptive random review nearly 3 years later? We were under the impression that they loved having the owner's dad, Dick, come over and help with projects, they'd request him by name. I know Dick always liked going over there and helping out with the miscellaneous things around their cool and unique house and hearing stories about the new house they were building in Peru to retire down there etc. If there were issues or something needs some further attention, we haven't heard about it, please call or email for it to be taken care of.

This was our third time using Platinum and it won't be the last. We are planning to move in about a year and wanted to update the main floor bathroom (to help sell the house) without spending a fortune. Work included: demo and dispose of existing bathroom vanity, purchase and install new vanity cabinet, reconnect/adjust plumbing as needed, remove old tub/shower controls and purchase then install new trim kits, touch up caulking everywhere, subcontract Porcelite to refinish tub and caulk around perimeter.

Thank you for the review and thank you more for your business! Glad we were able to help!
They were very very good and great. The biggest thing that I could say is when we first got the project started, they gave us a piece of paper with timeline of when things were going to be done and that was very very true to their timeline so that was important for me because I know who is coming each day and how many days they are going to be here when the painters were coming that was very good and just constantly the project manager would stop by and check to see how things were going we could always get a hold off her. They cleaned up after they left every single day. We have recommended them to so many people in our neighborhood. They are by far the best people that we ever worked with.
Description of Work: We used Platinum Remodeling & Handyman Services. We started in November, we had a big project so it was November through February actually they were here. We had a total bathroom remodel and all of our ceilings were redone. We took walls down and took out the entire wall there and actually put up a glass wall instead and lot of ceiling work they did and they also added a closet into one of our rooms and they put in a stone fireplace and another stone wall in the house. It is a long winter.

Overall it was pretty positive. There were a couple miscommunication issues. In general we are happy with the results. They were on the same timeline that we discussed. There were a few things that were left that I had to move, but in general they were clean. They did come back to take most of the items. When they were working upstairs they put plastic up to keep the dust from taking over the house.

Sorry for your frustration here, must be a bit of a disconnect in the communication. Our records show that you contacted us on 11/10 and were put on our waiting list which we initially said was around end of Dec, then on 12/23 you were contacted after we reviewed our list and determined that we were running behind. Katie, our office manager, emailed you to apologize and let you know that we had to stretch out our waiting list due to the size of some of the jobs in front of you and that you would be contacted the 4th week in January. We have one designer and one architect on staff and both estimate and run the projects start to finish, so we have learned how much we can handle and have to space things out in order to allow enough time to keep up with everything and do a great job for the project at hand. I understand that it can be frustrating to have to wait on a project you are excited to get started on, but the reality of our situation is we can only do a set amount of work each day/week/month and can't deviate from these rules we have set for ourselves or else things get out of whack, details missed, added stress on both ends...all not good things for our customers, our reputation and our future. We will try to be more accurate up front with the waiting list and request read receipts for waiting list related emails to ensure that customer's on the same page with us. Again sorry for the frustration and I will remove your name from the list so you are not contacted this week by the designer. To further discuss or get added back to the list, email Josh@platinumremodeling.com.

I could not be more pleased with Platinum! From start to finish, they have been a pleasure to work with. Anna was prompt and helpful with the initial estimating appointments, coming up with great suggestions on the best ways to match both the shape and tones of the existing woodwork in our 1920s South Minneapolis home. While I was disappointed they could not start sooner (I was ready to go in November,) I very much appreciated their honesty in terms of when they COULD commit time and resources. The wait was hard but worth it. Once they began work, right on the date scheduled, they worked non-stop until everything was complete, less than three weeks later. Huge difference from most contractors, with whom I have experienced delay after delay. The entire crew cared for our home as though it were their own, even going so far as to shovel the front walk one day to keep from tracking in newly fallen snow as they worked. That is going above and beyond! And, our dog is known to show his displeasure to workers, but even he wagged his tail all over the place and let them scratch his head :) They cleaned up so well when they were through. Beyond just sweeping up, they vacuumed every room, dusted desks and even books. It was amazing. Highly recommend - will use again!
Description of Work: Source, finish and install oak doors and trim throughout upstairs plus maple baseboards and one door on main level.

They handle every facet of the job and leave your home in pristine condition. When our under warranty windows were failing, we first went to the manufacturer and then had to find our own crew to complete the install. Platinum was recommended by our engineer and they were simply a dream to work with. They facilitated replacement parts with the manufacturer and had ALL the necessary supplies ready for an early spring repair. There were NO surprises and both jobs were completed within the estimated amount. We just love Anna and her dad!!!!!
Description of Work: We have hired Platinum on 2 occasions. First - They replaced 4 of our windows that had defects. Second - Upgraded our porch ceiling and trim around the outside of the home.

I've used them twice for remodeling issues. I know them. I know the guy who did the handyman works.
Description of Work: I used Platinum Remodeling & Handyman Services last week. They installed some toilets, replaced bathroom exhaust fans and some wiring and did repair on the garage.

Overall it went extremely well, especially the remodeling of the kitchen and addition of the bath in the basement. We lived in the house during the remodel and Platinum was always very responsive and respectful. Kara and Josh were terrific at taking our ideas and improving upon them to create a kitchen design that is exactly what we were looking for. I also love the co-construct program that we used to help manage the project. It is an online tool through which all aspects of the project could be managed. I could input all of my selections, ask questions and check the project schedule. It was also a great tracking record of all of decisions. We never had an issue of "well, I thought you said..." With a house that was built in 1950, you are bound to have a few surprises, and we did, but each time Platinum was very responsive and did a great job of outlying our options and the costs. Their costs came in exactly where they said they would according to the estimate and if we made changes, the changes were spelled out and easily identified. Reconciliation of invoices to estimates was easy. We truly enjoyed working with Platinum and would easily do again. I think the biggest testament to their work is how much we love to stay at home and enjoy the results of the remodeling!
Description of Work: In the fall so 2013 we started a major remodeling project on our 1950's styler home. Platinum added a 3/4 bath to our basement and refinished the laundry and storage room area making it much more usable. At the same time they helped us completely remodel and update the kitchen including the removal of a wall to open up space and join the kitchen to a family room addition. Those projects were completed in early November 2013. In May 2014 Platinum then remodel the main bath on the second level as well as the powder room off the master bath. Those projects were completed by early July 2014.

Thank you! You guys were awesome to work for, the whole crew had a great time. I know the carpenters especially enjoyed getting to see the "after" of the first phase when they came to work on the 2nd phase. The carpenters tend to not get to see things after all the painting, fixtures and finishing touches are completed. Thanks again for your business and for being so easy to work for!!
