Platinum Remodeling and Handyman Services was founded in February of 2005 when I bought out House Doctors-Southwest Metro. I had been the operations manager of House Doctors since it's inception in late 2002. I ran all of the day to day operations, estimated, scheduled, and managed all projects. When I started Platinum, I hired three of my previous co-workers and we never missed a beat! I have a degree in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Strategies from Iowa State University. This business degree paired with my experience and passion for residential remodeling made this venture a perfect fit. I am the third generation of Shonkwilers to own a construction company. I grew up in the remodeling and construction industry working for my father's company, Shonkwiler Brothers Construction. My father got started working with my grandfather and his company, Shonkwiler Construction. As of September 2007 my father has joined my team. I'm excited to bring his 32+ years in the residential construction industry, unmatched craftsmanship, integrity, and small town Iowa work ethic to the Twin Cities! I have acquired great employees with unique skill sets allowing us to complete a wide variety of projects. All employees are highly capable and take pride in a job well done. My employees are all "handy", but each has their own specialties and I use the employee that best suits your project. All employees have undergone background checks and drug tests. They are bonded and covered by workers compensation. I also have great subcontractors that I use on large projects and where licensed professionals (electricians, machinists, plumbers) are needed. We also use specialty subcontractors for things like large drywall projects, Cambria or stone countertops, floor refinishing, landscaping.....among many others. All of our work comes with a one year warranty on the labor, all materials carry the manufacturer's warranty. All subcontractors warrant their work as well. I have a Minnesota Residential Remodeler's license. The company is covered by liability insurance, worker's compensation and the employees are bonded.

I emailed him, he responded, there was a tiny delay, but it was done within a week. Our tenants thought we were miracle workers with such a fast turn-around.
Description of Work: We had Josh and his crew remove an old washer and replace it with a new one for our rental unit. He did this. The tenants say the washer is great. It was Roper brand, never heard of it, but hey if it works, great!
Everything we perfectly. No issues, no problems what so ever. Josh's crew is always on time and dedicated to the task at hand. The are effecient and provide the best service possible. They are simply a step above the rest.
Description of Work: Josh (owner) has completed many projects for us this year, including installing a flag pole, putting up our pub sign, completing our fall inspection of our home and adding additional installation, unplugging a clogged sink, staining our wine rack and fixing a leaky gutter, interior painting and basically any home repair needed. Josh's crew is always on time and very respectful of our home. They even let the dogs out and make sure they are okay during the time they are in our home. Over the years (I belive around six or seven years) we have used Platinum Remodeling for all our projects, both large and small. They have redone basically everything in our home, from gutting and remodeling our kitchen, bathrooms, basement to remodeling our front porch, deck, stairs. they do all our painting, lighting installations and all around handyman servicing of our home. Platinum Remodeling is honest and dedicated to their clients and I simply could not imagine using any one else. When you have found perfection in a service, you simple stop looking and perfection is what we have found in Platinum Remodeling and Handyman Services.
Description of Work: Platinum remodeling repaired water damage in my laundry room wall (found the source of the damage) and then completely redid the room by installing new flooring, walls and painting.
If you want exceptional results, hire Platinum Remodeling. Our experience was great from start to finish. We found Platinum on Angie's List and even though we interviewed two other contractors who came with personal references, we chose Josh and his team and couldn't be happier with the decision. Josh, the owner, came to the house initially to put the estimate together. It was the most detailed estimate I received, which I was happy about, because it was very clear what was going to happen and what each item cost. Platinum was not the cheapest bid we received, and Josh worked with me on pricing where he could. (Ultimately I feel we got more than what we paid for!) He was able to come up with some good solutions to save money while working with what we wanted. He was very flexible on revising the estimate since we kept adding stuff and he answered a million questions before we finally contracted them. After construction started, the process was easy. Each member of his team was nice, courteous and kept me in the loop about what was going on. They reassured me when I got nervous about things and they were right - trust the experts and you will not be disappointed! My kids loved Dick (Josh's dad), and I appreciated everyone's willingness to work around two small children and me working from home a lot. Of course with any remodel, unforeseen issues arose, and we worked together to solve the problem. In each instance I was completely satisfied with the outcome. The only major issue we had was with the countertop in the bathroom (the faucet holes were not drilled to our faucet specifications and we had to get a different faucet), and because it couldn't be redone, Josh gave us a very generous discount on it. Perhaps what I appreciated the most was their attention to detail. Every little project was done with an amazing attention to detail. The woodwork and trim, crown molding, tile (we did a ton of subway tile in the shower), and the painting! Anna is a fantastic painter who got her paintbrush in to very small spaces without any mistakes. I would also like to say that Anna was really great giving me honest feedback with paint color selection, placement of some items and advising me on these great faux wood blinds that are the perfect finishing touch on our bathroom and kitchen windows. I felt completely comfortable bouncing ideas off her (and pretty much every member of the Platinum team). The whole process took a bit longer than originally anticipated (mostly due to custom cabinet in bathroom) and started a few days late. I expected there to be delays based on what people say about the remodeling process so the timeline wasn't an issue. As far as sticking to the budget, we were able to basically stick to it and I think Josh did a really good job of anticipating what we wanted in the estimate initially, specifically with the allowances. (Some of the other quotes we received were lower but one of the main reasons was the allowances, they didn't put in hardly any money and we would've spent way more than the allowance to get what we wanted.) He sent us to vendors (cabinets, countertops) and products that fit with our budget. The only added costs were due to us adding stuff during the process after contracting and some plumbing things which couldn't have been anticipated. All in all, I am more than satisfied with the work done by Platinum and would recommend them to anyone. I love my new kitchen and bathroom!!
Description of Work: Kitchen: Demo, assembled and installed IKEA cabinets, added crown molding to all cabinets and around ceiling, installed dishwasher, faucet microwave and garbage disposal, painted walls and crown molding, updated electrical, vented microwave hood outside, fixed rotting pipes, tiled backsplash, hung artwork. Bathroom: Demo, installed pocket door, installed new tub, bathroom fixtures (faucet, lights, vent, etc.) and toilet, tiled around tub to ceiling, painted, updated electrical, custom cabinet/vanity, granite countertop with sink, hung accessories and mirror.

Thank you! You guys were so great and easy to work for. It is very stressful having the kitchen and main bathroom gutted and down for an extended period of time, but you guys handled it like seasoned veterans! I need to get those before and after shots from you. That was a pretty dramatic transformation and would be one for the website. Thanks again for your business (and the maple bacon fritters!)!
We loved working with Platinum Remodeling! Josh came and met with us for the estimate and talked through all the options for affordably updating our old bathroom so it would work for our family of four. Platinum has done a lot of work in our neighborhood and we were big fans of what we had seen. We didn't want to take down any walls or move the plumbing given the limited space, but we did want to add efficiencies wherever we could. Josh had great knowledge of what worked in houses like ours. He listened when we said we wanted to stick to a budget and understood our style immediately. Platinum took great care of our home which we appreciated, laying a path across our floors to ensure they weren't damaged and masking off the room to lessen the dust. Every member of the team represented the company perfectly - skilled, polite and with great attitudes. I wanted to purchase all the fixtures on my own and Platinum took the specs and worked with them. The end result is a bathroom that works so well for us we can't believe it. It looks exactly as we envisioned and is super efficient. We were able to remove everything from the floor by building a step stool and a garbage can into the vanity. Built in storage in the shower surround took products off the tub and a genius pull out cabinet behind the shower gave us lots of additional space. We have done many projects on our house and Platinum was one of the best contractors we have every worked with. We are thrilled with every aspect of the project and hope to work with Platinum again soon.
Description of Work: We hired Platinum Remodeling to fully remodel our upstairs bathroom, which had last been remodeled 50+ years ago in our 1914 house. There are four of us using this bathroom and we wanted a modern and efficient space. This included drywall, carpentry, trim, insulation, plumbing, electric and lots of tile.

Thank you guys for your very thoughtful and detailed report. You guys were really fun to work with and your great style and selections made us look good! Enjoy!
Given the timing (mid-summer) we did have to wait a while to get on the schedule, but that was not an issue at all. The crew was friendly and helpful, and did an excellent job. To our eyes, the craftsmanship of the flooring, dry-walling and finishing was excellent. The flooring took the longest but it was obvious that it was due to the attention to detail and nothing else. The project came in near the estimate provided, outside of some changes that we made along the way. They were extremely flexible with our changes on a few minor things along the way. The "B" for responsiveness was given for some lack of communication on timing and progress that I would have liked. It is obvious that Platinum is very busy, had many jobs going on before and during our project, but the weeks leading up to our project, we would have liked additional communication on what the plan was. That said, when I pushed Josh on this, the responsiveness was great and the project started and ended in a timely manner. A minor issue in the scheme of the project. Overall, a great experience and we would use Platinum again.
Description of Work: The project was a general remodel which included demolition, installation of hard-wood flooring in multiple rooms, installation of lighting, re-facing a fireplace, adding a gas insert and a few other small items. Josh came out and gave a competitive estimate but more importantly, shared ideas on what our options were based on what he had done in the past. We selected Platinum more on the feel of being on the same page with the plan than anything else at all.

Thanks for the feedback and the review here! You guys were great to work with, despite being pushed out of your house while the floors were being coated all while pregnant. I look forward to working with you on the next project...and meeting the twins too!
I picked this company based on reviews and was a little disappointed by the speed and timeliness of meetings/service. The staff I did speak to was friendly however I got the impression they were slightly understaffed in both the Office and in the Field.
Description of Work: I called for an Estimate the first week in September. The earliest they could come out was September 22nd. In the mean time I had three other estimates from three other companies. The estimator Chad was friendly and on time for the scheduled appointment. To my surprise he said it would take one week to put the estimate together (the other three did it on the spot) . A week went by and I heard nothing.. then on October 3rd at the end of the business day I received an email with the estimate. Their estimate was $600 higher then the highest bid I had received and they were into December for a start date. The work included some drywall, tile, painting and ceiling re-texturing in 10x12' kitchen.

Good feedback here. Not much to say other than being busy is kind of a blessing and a curse at the same time. We know how many estimates we can handle appropriately and schedule new estimates based on that number, so we do get backed up but try and be up front about it at the initial call or email so that we aren't wasting each others time if our timing won't be a good fit. It's true Angie's List has us swamped and we are a bit under staffed in the field and the office! I'm very picky about new hires and making sure they fit what I'm trying to build here...so it is quite a slow process to add to the team. This customer actually has submitted her resume and is interested in working in the office part time to help out!
Things went well. It took a while to get things scheduled, but the scheduling commitments were met within a few days. After installation, there were a couple of minor issues detected with the gutter and the doorway, The gutter did not quite reach to the end of the roof line, and the door required a significant pull to latch completely. Platinum took quickly care of them to my satisfaction. The job site was cleaned up and debris removed.
Description of Work: installing a pedestrian door in detached garage. (Garage had only vehicle door) Install gutter on one side of the garage Extending patio with pavers Installing patio light on exterior of house with interior switch Installing electrical outlets and switch in garage.
I worked with them through an interior designer as I was making plans to do some modest interior remodeling.
Description of Work: I have used them for a variety of jobs--new outside door frame, new countertops and back splash in kitchen and countertop in bathroom, general handyman projects including painting.

Platinum Remodeling gave me a quote. I met with Chad. He was very professional. Very insightful and friendly. I was very comfortable knowing that he would be one of the ones I would be working with. He came up with good ideas. I got the estimate back in 3 days. The only issue was their availability. I will probably be using them on a different project in the spring.
Platinum Remodeling did a fantastic job! They were professional and extremely easy to work with. The quality of their work was excellent. We have had many experiences with contractors and Platinum Remodeling surpasses them all! Chad was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful with his price estimate for the project, along with guidance with permits, etc. The people doing the work (Marty and Dick) were consummate craftsmen! They did all the work expected and more. The quality was excellent and no corners or short-cuts were ever taken. Each night, the work area was left clean, and whenever we asked questions they were always patient and helpful. We have nothing but positive things to say about Platinum Remodeling. The finished project looks great and we have received many compliments on the work done. We have recommended them to friends and look forward to using them again for future projects in our home.
Description of Work: Our sunroom conservatory roof was replaced. The inner trim was replaced with a tongue-in-groove ceiling added. Additionally, our ceiling fan was replaced and the whole area repainted. Finally, the roof was shingled and gutters installed.

Josh responded rapidly to our emergency request. We had painters waiting in the wing to do our house and summer was half over.Josh gave a reasonable bid and worked us in quickly. Zach did the work and we could not have asked for a nicer, more professional worker. After much research, he learned that a wood piece did not exist that was large enough to fill the front of the port ico. He and Josh found other cement board but advised that this would look very different. Zach then pulled off the soffit strips and patched front of the portico, noted that the original front was in great shape and restored it. He then added trim along the bottom to give a more finished look squeezing us in between two jobs on one day in order to complete it before painters came. Finally, he and Josh waited to see if our painters could smooth out the soffit before we incurred extra cost. The painters were able to fix that. This was a fabulous experience from beginning. Everyone we talked to or worked with was professional, pleasant to work with and very willing to work with us around our emergency timing. We highly recommend using them and will do so ourselves.
Description of Work: Restoring our portico and soffit after a poor carpenty job. The front of the portico had an indentation by design and the soffit had mismatched seams between plywood pieces. We had another carpenter fill in the portico but he put on interior grade cabinate wood with a big seam allowing potential leakage. Additionally, he covered the seams in the soffit with strips of wood making a mismash of lines. We asked Josh to undo this and fill in the portico with a solid piece of exterior wood.
They are very reliable and honest. It's a family group, and there are several members of their family that work there, but the non-family they hire are very good people.
Description of Work: They've done a numerous amount of work for us, and our clients use them. They replaced our deck last year, and they've replaced our windows for us.

The project was 6 years in the making, learning the project was more than we could handle we hired Platinum for the job. We have used Josh and his crew for 3 or 4 other projects all of which we have been pleased the end result. Josh came and gave us the bid and explained what was all involved. Marty cam for the next 3 days to do the project and he was a pleasure through out the entire process. Always taking care while bringing things back and forth to the basement and taking extra care not to scratch the freshly painted walls. He also clean up each the workspace and basement each day before leaving .... leaving almost no trace that he had been there. We have in the past and will continue to recommend Platinum based on the great results, professionalism of the crews, and quality of their work.
Description of Work: Hung a set of old french doors that we purchased from a closed business. Needed to be re-sized to fit the space, the lock fixed, all door hardware re-assembled to working order, door jam, dry wall hung and taped.

I trusted them soon after meeting the owner (and later his carpenters), and found they were very flexible in working with me to minimize the scope of work and reduce the overall cost but still solve the problem in an effective way. They discussed a range of options/prices, were willing to answer all my questions, and most importantly inspired confidence in their work. They seem pretty busy because they are very good at what they do, and great to deal with. So while it took a while to get on their schedule, they did do a great job keeping me posted on when they could do the work, and any changes to the original schedule. So most importnantly, I'd add an "A+" for their communication skills. I was also glad they were willing to take on a small, somewhat messy job, and seemed genuinely interested in leaving a good impression and creating future business opportunities. Refreshing in this day and age of disappointing services/contractors.
Description of Work: Reinforce four floor joists with support beam in basement, and add "sister joists" for additional support.
Overall job was great! they plowed through our to-do list with a efficiency and a smile. Our house sold in three days, in part due to their hard and quick work.
Description of Work: We needed to get our home ready to sell QUICKLY, and as usual Josh and the people at Platinum Came through for us. Work included: replace light fixtures, replace bathroom fan, minor electrical repair, small woodworking, paint main staircase, misc paint and caulk.

We used Platinum last year on remodeling our kitchen and living room and was very happy with their service. This year, Dick put in a vent in our upstairs bathroom that had no ventilation and add a second light in the hallway. The vent from the bathroom vents out to the roof. The ductwork tags in a ceiling vent from an adjacent bathroom and dampers were put in place on both. All were done in 1 day and we are very happy with the results.

The original estimate of $275 was for the tiling end of the project only but in the process of removing tiles they needed to repair drywall damaged in the process. They added on an additional $100 for the drywall patch-up. They were careful and kept me informed of progress, scheduling, etc. And I could always get in touch with someone related to the project if I had questions
Description of Work: A small but poorly done tile addition to an already existing tiled bathroom needed to be removed and tiles saved & re-cut to make the tiling appropriate to the original tile work. Chad, the guy doing the estimate actually made good suggestions for resetting tile that were more appropriate than what I had originally proposed.

We found Platinum's sales person to be very personable and knowledgeable. He showed up on time, explained Platinum's approach, and seemed to listen to our ideas and budget constraints. He also volunteered several thoughts about how to improve the end result. For example, he suggested adding under-cabinet lighting, with skirts under the upper cabinets to conceal the lights; he also suggested moving electrical sockets and switches for a cleaner looking back splash. I don't think we understood how much those "whistles and bells" would add to the project cost until the written estimate came back -- at about a third higher than the next nearest bid (of three). I believe Platinum bid a fair price for the work it was proposing to do; it just wasn't what we were looking for. Also, Platinum's estimate called out a quartz composite product for the counter tops, even though we had specifically said we did not want quartz. No doubt that could have been corrected easily, but that's not the point. It made us wonder how well the sales person had listened. We wondered whether communication might become an issue during the project, if we we went with Platinum (although in fairness we hadn't seen any other reviews raise concerns on that point). Rather than ask Platinum to re-bid, we ended up going with a different contractor who had, in our view, a more pragmatic approach to this job. All that said, if there is another, more interesting, bigger-budget remodeling project in our future, we would likely ask Platinum to bid it. We liked their track record and their willingness to contribute ideas based on their experience. Knowing what we now know, we wouldn't hesitate to go back and forth a couple of times on the estimate to make sure we were on the same page.
Description of Work: We asked Platinum to bid on a relatively low-budget kitchen "spiff-up," keeping the existing cabinetry. The job would include repainting worn cabinet faces with the same white enamel, replacing the island with a custom-built one, installing stone counter tops and a sink, putting in a subway tile back splash, and installing new appliances that we would purchase separately. As we told all the bidders, this is not a dream kitchen, just an update. We are not experienced remodelers, so we were looking for contractors who could contribute practical ideas and advise us on the best use of our remodeling dollar.

We had a little time lag getting our estimate--had to follow up a couple of times, but finally got the job scheduled. The tile repair went great, but then they had to send another worker out to finish the baseboard and to caulk the tle around the tub. The baseboard looks fine, but the cauiking job was really NOT done well. The caulk on the tub was on both the tile and the tub--luckily I could wipe it off before it was dry, but I had to redo it myself. The caulk also did not get wiped off the baseboards, so it dried, and I had to sand/peel it off before I could paint. Kind of a mess!
Description of Work: Replaced damaged tiles in a shower, put up new baseboard in bathroom.

Thanks for the feedback- this was the first we had heard that there was any issues over there. We would have gladly come back and straightened all of that out. The customer should never have to clean-up behind us or redo caulking. Sorry for the hassle! If you would like, I'd be willing to refund a portion of your invoice for the work you had to do or offer to have Anna (our best caulker) come over and re-caulk a back-splash or another shower. If interested, just email me to set it up. Thanks

It was almost a dream remodel. Of course there were some glitches, like a chip in one of the floor tiles and a marginal crack on the thermostat but they fixed those things IMMEDIATELY. They are simply great to work with. AND they responded so well to "scope creap". Once my wife saw the quality of their work, she decided that several tasks we had assigned to me, the resident handyman, would be better done by the pros! It WAS better done by the pros. I can't say the same for some of the sub contractors. The Granite-Tops people promised measure and install within 7 (SEVEN) days of the call after the vanity was installed. It was 21 (TWENTY-ONE). That threw a glitch in Platinum's schedule. They worked with it, no complaints. The shower door people kept insisting that the pencil tile trim needed to be ground down although Josh's crew thought not. So they ground it down and Josh's crew were right. Both of those companies are the quality I've come to expect from most contractors. Platinum is the complete opposite. Platinum Remodeling are, unequivocally, the best I've worked with in over 35 years of remodeling experience. They have my 100% endorsement and recommendation.
Description of Work: This was like an HGTV or DIY project. A couple of years ago we decided to remodel our master bathroom. But after 2 (some say 4) years, we still hadn't made it beyond taking out the old whirlpool and starting to demo the walls. Then we met Josh and his crew when we called to have utility stairs put in the garage. We knew right away that these were guys we could work with. We split the work into stuff we are good at like basic demolition, framing the windows and painting but left the hard stuff to the professionals from Platinum. We procured all the material, tile, plumbing fixtures, tub, vanity, mirror, toilet, etc. They did all the installation.

They were good and we were largely happy with the work they did. The man who replaced the tile sometimes stayed too late, staying beyond the dinner hour which we didn't care too much for. The price was good; the quality was excellent.
Description of Work: They remodeled my bathroom by replacing my shower, tub and sink. They also did the tile.

I'm not sure how this report from 2 years ago got re-issued, but we'll take it! Thanks for the kind words and I'll make sure to check in the future if customers mind if Josh N works late on the weeks he doesn't have his daughter to make up the hours for when he does have her and has to come late and leave early to deal with school and daycare. Thanks
