+ -1 moreWe were extremely happy with A-1. A representative came out to our home prior to our move to give us a quote and see all of the items that needed moving. I really liked that because it meant no surprises. They understood what we had and what needed to go so we had the number of trucks and guys needed to do the job. We also had to make a stop at the storage unit, and that was no problem for them. We were closing on both our old and new home on the same day so we had a pretty tight schedule. The guys showed up at 7:59am for our 8-8:30am start time which only helped our schedule. We ran into a big snafu with the closing on our new house and we were unable to close the day we planned so we are sitting there with two truck fulls of all of our belongings, and no place to put them. A-1 did everything they could to help. Luckily, we were able to move the items into the garage and A-1 was able to accommodate us and send a team of guys the next day, once we had closed, to unload our garage and move our belongings into the house. It was an unbelievable relief that they could do that. The movers were nice, friendly, polite, patient, accommodating, and did a great job. I also felt that they were very respectful of our home moving out and in. We were very happy with A-1.

+ -1 moreThese guys did a great job! We had a team of three people packing one day and then 4 people moving the next day. They gave us a half hour window for their arrival time each morning (8-8:30am), arrived on time, and got right to work. The boxes were labeled with the room and contents (some of the contents labels weren't very helpful, but much better than nothing!). All the workers were very personable and cheerful which was great since I personally find moving pretty stressful. When we got to our new house, the boxes & furniture were all brought to the appropriate rooms (should go without saying, but apparently some companies just dump all your boxes wherever) and furniture was set up. We haven't completely unpacked yet, but haven't found anything broken or damaged. It was an unreasonably humid day and everyone was getting tired by the end, but the guys kept a good attitude and were working hard right up until the end. It was expensive, but right around the expected price (about $400 less than the high end of the estimate), and worth every penny in my opinion! We had another quote that was quite a bit lower, but I'm glad we went with A-1.

We have used this company before and keep going back to them. Every time they seem to exceed expectations. Moving is stressful and these gentlemen make it so much easier.

+ -1 moreThe move went very smooth. It was the first time we had hired movers and with this experience we would hire them again. We had a the closing set for 12, when we were done they were already at the new address waiting for us. They got to our house on time and started moving items right away. They picked up our stored boxes from second location as well. They were right on their estimate they gave to us, and were actually on the low end of their estimated cost range. Ryan, Derek, Brian, and Carvell were great guys to work with. They answered all questions and had a great attitude all day.

+ -1 moreThe team at A-1 was amazing. The estimator was punctual, informative, and even recommended a couple of ways for us to save money on our move. By the time the move rolled around, we weren't entirely ready, but the team just worked around us. Like a well-oiled machine, Aaron and Lydell loaded the truck, drove to the new house, and unloaded it in an hour less than was estimated. To have the move come in under budget and see how careful and diligent these guys were about taking care of our stuff really made us happy. We can't thank or recommend A-1 moving enough.

+ -1 moreNeeded to de-clutter our home to get it ready to put on the market. Called A-1 to see if they could move a few pieces of furniture and several boxes to a storage locker. They were able to come out the next day and get us moved. They were a life saver since selling a home/moving can be very stressful. Two movers came out right on time and were very professional and made sure they had protective covering for the floors. Also, they wrapped a couch up nicely so it would not get dirty. They were hard workers and we sooo appreciated their work. Will definitaly use them again.

+ -1 moreGenerally the move went fairly smoothly. They had a guy who seemed to be the boss of this crew of eight men. They had relatively new trucks, and other equipment. Our main gripe was the damage done to many of our nicest pieces of furniture. They have been slow to have the furniture repaired and when it was originally done, the repairman made more problems than he fixed.

+ -1 moreSorry for the delayed reivew! I have moved many times in my life and these guys were AWESOME!!!! I had Joe, Troy and Ben. I would reco them again and again! They were very professional and very hard working! Usually when someone gets paid to move by the hour they move slow, not these guys, they worked hard for 9hrs! They were super nice and out going and very respectful of my things. I ended up buying them pizza for lunch and gave them a great tip, something everybody should do when someone does great work for you! They didn't complain when they had to make an extra trip because I had more things in my house than the orginal estimate. Thanks for your hard work guys, you trully were great!

We were not as prepared as we'd hoped to be but had no choice but to keep our move date because a company was coming the next day to refinish the floors. The guys were so helpful moving out and then moving into the new place. It made everything so much easier. Plus, they seemed so happy doing the work. They were smiling and really gave a good feeling to the whole operation. I would hire them again for anything I needed to move.

+ -1 moreUpdate 4/14/14: Fred Nichols, owner of A-1 MOVING, subcontracted my move to Stevens Van Lines without my knowledge or consent. In other words, he NEVER implicitly, or especially explicitly explained to me that he was acting as an AGENT to Stevens. And that once the paperwork was completed, he would have no more responsibility for my experience from that moment forward. This is duplicitous at best and unethical at worst. Because he is only an 'agent' for Stevens, he absolves himself of responsibility when things go wrong with the move, which they clearly did. Even though he took my business, handled all the up-front paperwork, and took my credit card information, the whole time smiling and presenting himself to me as the mover in charge, which he now claims he never was. This move cost me nearly $13,000.00 up front, not even including the losses I incurred. For him to state that I was "disingenuous" is the ultimate irony. It was MY responsibility to see the small Stevens logo on one piece of paperwork and ask "what does this mean"? I could convincingly argue each point of his response to my review, but I have already wasted huge amounts of time dealing with this fiasco. As he pointed out, he was not there, during ANY part of the move, to witness what occurred. Of course the moving boxes are 'supposed' to be new/unused, but they weren't and I have enclosed a photo of one of these boxes, literally falling apart. We were bitten by bugs AFTER we slept on the mattresses Stevens delivered, and I reported it within two business days, after doing extensive research online. Fred stated that Stevens has "the best reputation of all interstate van lines". One needs to spend less than ten minutes googling reviews of Stevens to see that this is simply untrue, and that in fact, Stevens could not be rated much worse. In retrospect, it is clear why Fred did not disclose his role as agent only for Stevens. Because if I (or anyone for that matter) would have had opportunity to research Stevens, I would never have agreed to them as the mover. I am sure that is not lost on Fred, hence the sleight of hand. The fact that Fred is even willing to agent for such a poorly regarded company as Stevens speaks volumes about him. Mr. Nichols also stated that "3% of interstate moves go badly". I'd like the source of this statistic-it could not possibly be accurate. Citing this unsubstantiated statistic was an attempt to marginalize me and my experience further as just a small, unfortunate statistic of doing business. His response also stated that "for interstate moves, I fly under the Stevens flag." More accurately it should have stated, "for interstate moves, I HIDE BEHIND the Stevens flag". In the mediation process, to resolve this conflict and be willing to remove my review from Angie's List, I requested that he 1)facilitate delivery of our still-missing chicken coop; 2) admit in writing that he did not tell me up front that he was subcontracting the move; and 3) reimburse me for claims that Stevens may not cover. His response was to offer me $100.00 in compensation. This is offensive. At this point, this is less about money and more about his clear lack of integrity. Mr. Nichols thinks that since he was acting as agent - even though he never disclosed that fact to me - that he has no further responsibility in this matter. My attorney, backed by Minnesota state statute, has a different view of his position. Other than taking him to court, my only recourse is here, on Angie's List, where I am limited to telling the truth about my experience and hoping that upon reading it, no other honest folks make the mistake of trusting Fred Nichols, thus having to go through what I went through.
Description of Work: Packed and moved our belongings from Excelsior, Minnesota to Ashland, Oregon November-December 2013 I recently moved from Minnesota to Oregon. I chose A-1 Movers largely because the reviews on Angie's List looked positive. What a HUGE mistake...it turns out that A-1 subcontracted the move to a company called "Stevens Worldwide". Fred from A-1 did not tell me this up front, because if he had, I never would have used them. Stevens is not on Angie's List because they would never make the grade-they are rated HORRIBLY: http:///www.yelp.com/biz/Stevens-worldwide-van-lines-saginaw. Problems with the move include the following: 1. It took over a MONTH to receive all our things (well, we never did receive everything). On day 2 of the move, we were informed that our things would have to come in two separate loads. This was NOT part of the initial agreement. The first load arrived 13 days later, and the second load arrived three weeks after that. 2. The wardrobe boxes they packed our clothes in were clearly used, and I believe the bed boxes may have been as well, and yet we were charged full price for these boxes. By the time they arrived on Oregon some of the boxes were falling apart and the mattresses (one of which was new) had gotten dirty. The mattresses had not been wrapped in plastic as one would expect. 3. After sleeping on our beds that A-1 delivered, we woke with bites from some unknown mite or bug of some kind. I contacted both Stevens and A-1; neither took action (they were essentially non-responsive) on our behalf and we had to hire a pest-control company to come out to our house. We ended up disposing of one of the beds that we had paid to have moved. 4. Our new (and very cool) chicken coop-retail value $900-was never properly tagged, and so we never received it (and I suspect we never will). Despite repeated polite inquiries about this to Fred at A-1, I have NEVER heard back from him, not once! 5. The moving truck couldn't come down our driveway, so we had to pay to rent a U-Haul and have all our things transferred from the moving truck to the U-Haul to get them to the house. We had to do this TWICE, once for each load. The second time, we used our own pick-up truck to avoid even more expense. Obviously it was not our fault that our things were delivered in two separate loads to begin with. 6. The U-Haul truck got stuck on our lawn (it was muddy) in an attempt to get it closer to the house and had to be TOWED out. This tore up our lawn. 7. Because our things were the last of three households moved on one truck, the movers were in a terrific hurry and the last items to be moved were not packed carefully, or in some cases, at all. Consequently some items were dirty/disheveled and quite a few items had broken in the move. I wish I had packed everything myself, because I would have done a better job. 8. We had to put our family members up in a hotel over the holidays for fear they would get the weird, unidentified bug infestation and take it back to their homes. 9. We received a few items that weren't ours, causing us to wonder how many of our items were delivered to other people. In sum, we paid A-1 nearly $13,000 (not including what we spent on bug eradication) and had to wait a month (or more) for our things, are missing our rabbit hutch, had bugs, a torn-up lawn, broken and dirty items (some packed in used boxes), other people's stuff in our garage, and an ongoing headache trying to straighten it all out. All of this took place over the Christmas holidays on top of it. Fred from A-1 has been unresponsive throughout this fiasco, although I did receive one email from him, stating "for interstate I fly under Stevens flag, and they have all rights and responsibilities when it comes to insurance. I am out of the loop and have no say". And yet I signed a contract with and paid A-1, not Stevens. My sense is that both A-1 and Stevens choose to ignore customer complaints as most people would never actually take legal action (because it is not worth the time and headache). Just so happens that I am not one of those people. Needless to say, I would not recommend either of these horrible moving companies to ANYONE, EVER.

Several emails to the company have been ignored and only after contacting by telephone were they willing to send a repairman to fix problems. The repairman made things worse on several pieces of furniture. We have again emailed and called and are told that the repairman will contact us soon. Still waiting.

+ -1 moreThe arrangements were easy once we connected. The first message was lost, but the second call I was helped immediately. The move was smooth. Aaron and Terrell arrived on time, and had all of the furniture packed in less than an hour. Once they were on the road, they arrived very promptly, and had all furniture moved as efficiently as 2 people can, especially given the weather conditions. They were courteous, asking questions when needed, and taking direction with great ease. THe dogs loved them too! They did the final drop off in the same fashion. They treated the furniture and the house as if it was their own. This was great, as the quote was based on time.
Description of Work: This provider moved furniture from one home location to 2 locations in the twin cities area. We had some valuables, including a grandfather clock and victrola, in addition to a bedroom set, and other large pieces of furniture to move.

+ -1 moreThey called 30 minutes prior to arrival and showed up at the pickup location when they said they would. They came in and left their shoes on tracking in snow throughout the home. They proceeeded to load the armoire into the truck. They left the home without cleaning up after moving the piece. They did the same thing at the drop off location. Kept their shoes on tracking in snow throughout the house and not cleaning up after. They also seem of have little regard for the armoire they were moving as they let it hit the snowy ground and hit the doorway as they were carrying it into the home. They were not friendly nor professional. I will not be using this company again in the future.
