When I contacted them to do an estimate they were going to charge until I told that I had work done by them ten years ago and then they gave us a free estimate. They looked around and suggested some changes based on what they had observed. This house is really old and they were suggesting some changes to accommodate making all the same. I wouldn't refer them as they charge for an estimate and wouldn't only if some work was done by them before. It really bothered that they were going to charge me and I felt like that I had forced them to give a free estimate. I felt uncomfortable. I liked that they sat on the table and gave me an estimate here. They 20minutes of time and then was able to discuss what they wrote.
Description of Work: Hage Concrete Works came out and gave an estimate about three weeks ago. The estimate was for concrete, steps and side walk.

Hage was not the cheapest quote that I received, but they were the most comprehensive in what they would do to fix the problem. The other bids that I received were pretty minimalistic in their approach and their price. I'm sure that Hage would have quoted a more minimalistic approach, too, for a similar price, but I wanted to fix the problem forever instead of just patching over it. I get the feeling that (at least during these economic times) a lot of these concrete companies are just trying to make a quick buck doing low cost work. My feeling was that Hage has higher standards, a bit pricier, but well worth it.
Description of Work: Hage provided various foundation and garage floor repairs, plus a new apron around the garage.

While we wish we could have used this company (if our experience with the estimator is any indication of their quality), in the end, the bid was over our budget and we had to go with a one of the lower estimates.
Description of Work: Asked for an estimate on concrete work and really liked the gentleman who came and walked us through the process. He came as scheduled, responded promptly, and gave a very thorough and thoughtful estimate, explaining many details.

It worked out very well. They were there when they said there were going to be, finished the job on time, and were very professional. They were wonderful to work with. The quality of the work was impeccable. They were not the highest bid or lowest bid, but it was worth the extra money. I would definitely recommend them to others.

It is very beautiful and well done. Overall, they did an excellent job and I am pleased with the service.
Description of Work: They poured a new stamp concrete sidewalk. It was not a straight shot sidewalk it had curves in it. They stained it and it looks very nice. They also dug out my patio and laid concrete blocks for it.

The estimator came and was very friendly and had great ideas. He said that he would provide me an email quote, but after two weeks, I had not received any quote. I emailed him back and asked for the quote. He said that he was busy and would be sending it within the next day or two. It's been a year, and I never heard back from him. In the meantime, we built a 15*25 foot paver (obviously through a different company). I'm not sure why we never heard back, but it was a frustrating experience.

Went great. Because of the extremely wet spring and early summer, the polymeric sand can turned a slightly green tinge. But, this is more due to our heavily shaded back yard. The nice thing about this material is when it does loosen up and comes out in certain areas, and it will. It's very simple to just touch up fill those spots. It's as simple as pouring in some sand and hitting those repaired areas with a misting bottle. I'll probably do that every few years. This would not be a good solution for an area with constant standing water. I gave an A for price because although it wasn't a ton of work for Hage. The very fact that they offer this service for such a substantial savings over full patio replacment or restoration I feel says something about the willingness of the company to do what's right or best for the customer. And, not just push what makes most profit for them. Great company to work with.
Description of Work: Hage concrete restored a large old patio in the back of our house. We labored over what to do with this approximately 45' x 15' patio for a couple years before seeing something on a show called Victory Garden. The issue was our patio is from 1964 - yes original to the house which is hard to believe, but the concrete and exposed aggregate border was in near perfect condition. However, the redwood inlays that were originally inset and then poured in place were rotting and becoming carpenter ant feeding grounds. In short, it was becoming very unsightly. I got several estimates of 6K for a generic slab, and closer to 10K to do some decorative stamping. Well, that was just crazy and we have way too many other priorities to spend 10K on a patio. On the show, we learned of a product called polymeric sand, which can be used to fill gaps in brick by simply mixing with water and pouring over the gap areas. I contacted several firms over the next couple years and couldn't find anyone experienced with a project such as ours. That is until I called Hage. Ollie Hage came out and agreed that the patio was a great candidate to preserve. The alternative not only involved spending 6 to 10K, it also meant tearing up my yard yet again in order to access the back patio area. Hage sent 2 guys who dug out all of the imbedded redwood strips, power washed out the empty channels which had filled with dirt due to the shrinking of the wood, power washed the entire slab and then filled each slotted channel with polymeric sand. The work was done in 1 day and wow! What a difference. For $2K, we now have a beautiful patio that has a fantastic patina that matches the age of the house and the neighborhood. It set up witthin a couple days and my daughters were immediately riding their scooters without tripping or getting caught in the previously gaping holes. We couldn't be happier had we gotten a brand new poured patio for free. Because we did it on a budget, it was a "green" environmentally friendly solution, our yard sustained no affects from the work, and it blends in great with the house.

We had Hague do our retaining wall a few years back and they were great. On time. No surprises. Clean. Wiling to explain the process. Professional. So when our sidewalk cracked, leaving a crevice the size of Arizona it, they came out and replaced two sidewalk panels (they did not do the original work, the City of St. Paul did). To this date (six years later) the sidewalk is still pristine because they used their Technicrete process. They were terrific.
Description of Work: Our sidewalk - installed by the City of St. Paul - cracked after winter and left a crevice the size of a small canyon. The City said it wasn't bad enough to fix, so we called Hague. They came out, found two other panels that needed replacing and completed the work on time, within budget, and professionally.

Mr. Hage came out and gave a labor/materials flexible bid. He was kind, and things seemed fine. When the work crew came to start the work, one of the workers refused to start on the project because he was not comfortable with what Mr. Hage and I had decided on for a fix. I had to spend much time convincing this worker to do the job, and ultimately he and his fellow worker called Mr. Hage and confirmed the work to be done. This was frustrating. The concrete work was done with no attention to detail. I went to look at things as the workers were packing up, and had to stop them from leaving, because their repair job was incomplete. There were still many areas of concrete flaking off. When I pointed this out to the workers, one of the workers told me that if I am going to stare at this all day, then sure… I would find many problems. That was frustrating as well. When one of the workers came back to do a dye job on the concrete, he spilled concrete stain into the pool (which was partially empty and in the process of filling). This stain hit dry parts of the bright white pool floor, and stained the pool. I did not discover this until the worker had left, but it made me furious. On top of that, his stain (blending) job on the concrete was terrible. I wish Angie’s List allowed photos, because the pictures I took are shocking. I called Hage Concrete to complain about this, and they sent a third worker to see what could be done about our stained pool. He was very surprised at the poor concrete stain job, and did not have any ideas how to get stains out of a concrete pool. At this point, I had dealt with three different Hage Concrete employees. Two of them were terrible, and the third did not know how to fix the problems the other two had caused. At this point I called Hage and fired them, because it was apparent that Hage Concrete did not have a competent work staff. I did not want another Hage employee coming in and making things worse. I feel I got a mediocre concrete job, a terrible dye (blending) job that will have to be totally redone, and possibly irreversible damage done to our pool.
Description of Work: We asked Hage to repair a deteriorating concrete stream and waterfall system near our swimming pool. We asked that the new concrete be dyed to match the exisiting concrete.

It went fine. They came out the day after I called and I got the estimate within a couple days. The work was performed a couple weeks later by a couple of really nice guys who cleaned up the area after. I was very happy about the look of the new sidewalk.

The person who was sent to do the repairs was impressive. I was also very impressed with the owner’s professionalism, knowledge, and helpfulness. He seemed to be a consummate professional. It was reassuring to have such a person look at our front stoop and say it was not going to collapse. He is truly worth his price.
Description of Work: The owner of Hage Concrete Works had come and spoken to me for at least an hour. Another person was sent by him to do the repairs. The owner had helped me plan in replacing the sidewalk with a different design and so forth. He had looked at the front stoop of the house and said it would be fine for a while. He had also looked at our long winding stairway and recommended some patching up. I was given a timeline on how long I could safely go without replacing the concrete.

Since I live far away from the property, it is important to me that vendors are easy to work with remotely. Hage was very easy to work with. They promptly gave me a estimate. Once I sent the signed contract with 1/2 down payment, they completed the work quickly. They sent me photos of the completed work, and I had a friend verify the quality of the work. Hage was professional, easy to work work, and did quality work.
Description of Work: Hage eplaced the bottom step of the front steps on a house built in 1923. This included installing a foundation under the step and replacing the apron in front of the step. In addition, Hage replaced stucco at the bottom of one wall of a detached garage.

The whole project went very smoothly. Mike and his team scheduled the job and had intended to finish it in one day. However, they worked until approximately 9:00 pm (in November) and didn't quite get done. One of men came back the next morning (a Saturday) and worked another half day to finish the job.
Description of Work: One of the outside walls of my garage which is approximately half below grade had been pushed in about an inch at the bottom by the movement of the clay behind it. I had a wide range of bids to repair it, including total replacement of the concrete wall, removing the dirt from behind it and pushing the wall back in and reinforcing it with steel rods and concrete. I chose the latter approach and hired Distinctive Concrete to do the work. This was one of those jobs where I got 7 different bids and 7 different approaches to addressing the problem. In a situation like this, I recommend getting a larger number of bids than you would normally get for a job like this and then making the decision yourself relative to the best approach.

Price was way too high. We did not use.
Description of Work: We had some stone work done on the front of our home. We received a bid from Hage for $7,500. I felt that was high so I called to get competitive bids. Two other companies came in and gave us bids of $1,500. As there was no apparent difference in the quality of the work they could do we went with the lower bid. We are very happy with the results.
