Our two decks are located on the main level of a rambler style home. The decks are at least 20 feet off the ground and it required special care to complete the that was required. We wanted to replace all of the existing wood decking, replace all of the fascia board around the two decks, stabilize any sway in the two decks and replace any rotted wood on the deck support columns. We talked to many deck contractors that service the Woodbury, MN area and found that many were either too busy to return our telephone calls or couldn't get us into their schedule in 2013. Of those contractors we received quotes from, Expert Carpentry (Chris Hernandez) was great to work with. Chris was very responsive and helped to educate us on the materials and the approach that would work best for us. We asked Chris to provide us with many decking alternatives and he was also very responsive and patient with us as we made this very important decision. Our two decks are different sizes and each posed some challenges during the construction period (one is 12' x 12' and the other is 12' x 16'). We selected Chris (Expert Carpentry) to do the job for us because we thought he was fairly priced, offered a great deal of assistance to us, did not try to "sell" us something we would not be happy with and was very professional in his approach to the work and to his timely responses to us before, during and after the work was completed. We decided to replace the existing wood material from our decks and install Avek Slate Grey PVC material with the Cortex fasteners (which hide the screws that secure the deck boards. Chris began the project on August 19 and endured one of the hottest weeks in Woodbury, MN during 2013. He finished the project on Saturday, August 24. During the project, Chris kept us informed as to his progress, ensured the product he used passed his quality control inspections and always honored his commitments to being on the job when he said he would. There were a few challenges we presented to Chris before, and during, the construction period. First, we had a glass railing system on both decks that had to be removed and reinstalled. Chris handled this challenge very nicely as he removed the glass from each deck without any damage and reinstalled it in a manner that was better than before it had been removed. He also took great care to protect the glass until it was reinstalled. We also wanted Chris to bring the deck up to current day code, and to exceed the stability standards whenever possible. Chris succeeded in doing both and we are very pleased as we have a stable deck that meets today's deck building codes. Finally, we had a tight timetable for Chris to finish the project. Chris was aware of this and assured us we would have nothing to worry about. Chris was able to meet our deadline without sacrificing the quality of his work. Each night Chris would make sure our backyard was free of debris, nails, pieces of wood, etc. He neatly stacked all materials still to be used on the project and was always very safety oriented. We were very satisfied with the work of Expert Carpentry (Chris Hernandez) and would absolutely recommend him to anyone that would like a new deck installed, an old deck removed and replaced or any other carpentry work that you may need done. It is rare that someone in the trades works closely with you, is someone you can trust to be honest with you and fulfills their promises as to time schedule, product and workmanship. Chris is a hard worker and has exceeded our expectations in all regards and I would hire him again for any project that would require his talents.

.He kept us informed about dates and scheduling as he ordered the materials. Also he used email which was great, so we didn't play phone tag. The cleanup was great, he even vacuumed the sawdust out of the grass. I would recommend Chris for anyone looking to have a new or rebuilt deck.

We needed our deck steps relocated due to a new fence. Chris was one of 3 contractors we called. He was the first to respond, and the quickest to squeeze us in by working on a Saturday. The cost was very reasonable, and the quality was excellent. Chris is very professional. We couldn't have asked for a better experience all around.

Chris did an excellent job. His workmanship is great with decking. Highly recommend to anyone. He uses quality raw materials and fixes decks like it were his own with utmost attention to details. Chris is an honest, down to earth and sincere person, who does his best to meet the customers? expectations and is very reasonably priced. I will use expert carpentry again for any deck and carpentry work.

When Chris came to our home to look at our old deck, we weren't sure what we wanted in a new deck. Chris helped us narrow down the many options by giving us some great new ideas we hadn't even considered. He showed us photos of some other decks he'd built and we were impressed that he was able to create a huge variety of decks. Some were huge,some small, some elaborate, some simple, some all wood and some were composite. We knew that he would work with us to plan and build one that fit our style and budget. Chris has an easygoing roll-with-the-punches type of personality. When a few minor glitches arose during construction, he was able to work around them quickly and calmly. At the same time, he was true professional, being prompt in returning phone calls, showing up promptly each day, and working through weather conditions that varied from rain to sweltering heat and humidity. He left the worksite looking neat when he left each day, and the back yard was free of all wood scraps, nails, screws and other small debris which could have easily been overlooked when doing a final cleanup. We're really happy with Chris and his co-worker's work. They finished it in a timely manner and it looks great. We highly recommend Expert Carpentry for their creativity, friendliness, strong work ethics, reasonable pricing, and, well, their 'expert carpentry!'

Chris was very professional, immediately responding for a request for bid, contacting us about reviewing the site, etc. - even though we were securing additional bids - Chris was patient with this process. Once we settled on Expert Carpentry, Chris drew up the contract and set a start date that worked for our schedules and worked with us every step of the way. In an effort to finance our project to fit our budget, we secured the materials and Chris's bid was for labor only. However, as most projects go - we found some "pre-existing" issues which Chris addressed in a timely, professional and cost-effective manner. He also assisted in getting materials when our order didn't include the proper items, etc. After the deck was completed, Chris and Jake cleaned the work area and secured the final inspection - and we're enjoying the deck already! We would/will definitely recommend Expert Carpentry in the future and utilize them on our long list of projects down the road!

Chris Hernandez designed and built a beautiful cedar deck for us. He and his partner Ted removed the old, rotting deck, secured all permits and arranged relevant inspections (the inspector said ours was one of the best decks he'd seen), removed the old posts and set new ones to code, and built the exact deck we wanted with a gate and lovely railings. They also added underlayment and a drainage system to keep the patio below the deck dry. They were wonderful to work with, cleaned up beautifully, and were willing to accommodate our schedule, including a two-week delay when a robin built her nest under the old deck and I didn't want her disturbed until the babies had flown away. Chris came back after the cedar had "cured" for several weeks and added a seal coat to the wood surfaces and expanded the step into the three-season porch to make it safer for disabled persons. Both my husband and I are super pleased with the work we had done and especially liked the fact that there were no subcontractors involved: Chris and Ted did all of the work themselves, from beginning to end; they are courteous, professional, hard-working young men. The price was exactly what Chris said it would be and included everything: materials, disposal, permit, labor, etc.
