They did not perform any work on my house, but I will say, they were recommended to me by my boss who did have them draintile his basement and he was very pleased with their work, clean up, etc.
Description of Work: I called Standard to get a recommendation on Drain tiling and installing a sump pump before I remodel my lower level. They were able to come out within a few days of my phone call. Shane came out and arrived right on time. He asked a lot of good questions to clarify the extent of the water problem I had experienced. He explained how they drain tile, and then recommended some adjustments to my Egress window (the dirt level was too high) and permanently attaching the gutter downspout extension so that it no longer came unattached without my knowing it. He felt that if I took care of those two problems, there would not be any further water problems (it's only happened twice in the 20 years I've been in the house). So, he was very helpful even though it didn't end up in a sale. I think it's pretty rare to find a company that will be so honest and forthright in recommending something that does not benefit them, even when it is the right thing. I will recommend Standard to anyone that asks!

We have water leaking in basement. He looked at the area and looked at outside and suggested trying other fixes before going with their services, like getting the gutters looked at or new landscaping. Appreciated the other options versus pushing their services only and maybe unnecessarily. Will call them back if the problem persists. Kevin was very knowledgeable, showed us everything he saw, and answered all our questions. Called before he came as was done with another job early to see if earlier was good for us.

They came out and did a more thorough proposal and bid than any of the 5 contractors we had come. They gave the most impressive proposal and were by far the lowest bid (by more than $1000). They scheduled a 2 day period that worked for us, came out, and did the entire basement in 2 days. It was pretty amazing, actually. We were overly impressed with the work they did and very highly recommend them!

Overall, this went extremely well. Even though it took awhile to get the work completed, estimate was performed in August and they were not able to schedule the work until mid March of 2015, it was definitely worth the wait. This company has a great reputation and the quality of their work shows. We had another plumber out prior to the install and we mentioned that we were getting a sump pump installed and they asked if we were using Standard Water. It just confirmed that we picked the right people to do the job. The estimate process was very efficient and informative. Prior to the actual install, especially since there was such a long time between estimate and install, the company called to confirm the date at least twice. The actual install was great. They did a quick walk through in the beginning to make sure there were no questions and confirmed the placement of the sump pump and drainage pipe (and back up pipe). They started around 9am and finished around 4:30pm. They easily blocked off the upstairs to prevent any cement dust from getting upstairs. The next day, the team who finished the cement work was able to get in early (upon request) and were done before 11am. After another walk through at the end, everything was done and I just needed to wait for the cement to dry. Great people who work there and they do really great work. Highly recommend them.

I was very impressed with the work done to install our sump pump system. They took great care in keeping the area clean and working around all of the obstacles in my basement. Plastic was put up around the work area and there was minimal dust, even with our thick basement concrete removal. I received a full explanation of the work and how to make sure the sump is working. I also received a radon kit and follow up materials with a lot of useful information as well. The concrete work appears to be very well done and we're looking forward to keeping our basement dry!

The sales person we were working with was fantastic. He gave us all the info we needed and left lots of info for us to study to understand the system that he was recommending and way he thought this would solve our water problem of 9 years. The office called and confirmed out date a few days out and repeated the info that our sales person had given us to prepare the basement for them to work on. The crew arrived right on time. They spent the first part of the morning protecting the rest of the area from the dust the process would produce and covering our floors. They worked hard all day and finished the first stage right on time. They returned the next day (right on time) and finished the job. Since the work that they have done, we have not had one drop of water in the basement. I wish we would of found them YEARS ago! They were a great value and were so nice to deal with.

Standard Water was exceptional to work with. Details are included below, but in short, I was grateful to have chosen Mike and his crew because they were extremely professional, did excellent work, and most importantly, conducted their business with integrity. Selecting a drain tile contractor can be intimidating because of the expense involved and the drastic measures that a homeowner sometimes has to take to remedy basement water problems. I unconditionally recommend Standard. We had severe water problems during the extremely wet spring of 2014. Once we began calling drain tile installers after the flood waters subsided, it became clear that you'd be lucky to get a call back at all, because most companies were booked out for months and literally could not answer the phone. Standard's website is informative and does a good job of explaining the basics of a homeowner's options to deal with water problems. Although I had to leave a voice message for Standard, as promised, they returned the call and promptly came to my house to do an estimate. The estimator had thorough knowledge of products and the installation process. He explained how we should prepare our basement for the work. He explained that they were booked several months out, but told us the exact day that they would be installing our project, which ended up being the actual day that the work was performed. He also explained that Standard wasn't responding to the influx of jobs by adding a bunch of inexperienced crews just to keep up. Given the massive number of people getting drain tile installed, we were unable to get an estimate from a different company for comparison. However, I know that a friend had a smaller drain tile project installed by a contractor that took several days to complete the project and paid significantly more than I did. After accepting the offer I received a thorough letter explaining the work to be done and what we needed to do to prepare. On the day promised, the crew called ahead, and showed up on time. The crew put up plastic to control dust as much as possible. The installation -- including jackhammering, removing a massive amount of concrete and installing the drain tile, sump basket and pump, battery backup and vapor barrier -- was completed in one day. New concrete was poured the next day and completed in just a few hours. As the job was just completed, I have not seen the sump pump work in a heavy rain, but the quality of the installation work looks excellent. The only problem that occurred actually turned out to be a significant benefit to me. After the first day of work, I noticed damage to a basement window that the crew used to pass tools and concrete through during their work. On the second day, one of the workers took photographs and I got a call from Mike, the owner of Standard Water, who took responsibility for the damage and began to discuss how to remedy the problem. It took several phone calls to determine whether the window should be replaced or repaired, and throughout that process, Mike was prompt at returning my phone calls; I felt that he was taking care of his customer. Ultimately Mike decided -- without me having to push the issue -- that the only way to fix the window was to totally replace it. I suspect that his decision to do so means that Standard may have lost money on my job, but Mike did what the owner of "stand-up" company, one that understands how important a reputation for integrity is, does to ensure that the customer is taken care of. The window installer has told me that payment has already been made by Mike, so he has held up his end of the deal, plus more. Here's the "more," a separate benefit: After Mike's worker examined the window damage, Mike realized that what I thought was a basement egress window actually did not meet the code for the proper square footage of the window opening once the window was cranked open. Once I looked at the open window, I realized that it would have been far more difficult to exit my basement during an emergency that if the window's hinges were placed to meet the egress code requirements. Oddly, if the damage had not happened, I probably never would have realized that there was a far safer way to locate the hinges on the window, which will now happen when the new window is installed. Over the years, I've worked with many contractors listed on Angie's list, but I've never written a review. I try to pick companies, like Standard Water, with lots of excellent reviews, and have felt like my one additional review can't make that much of a difference. Standard impressed me so much that I felt compelled to write this one.

With the wet spring last year, we had some significant water ingress in our basement. Not wanting to deal with that scenario again, we asked for quotes from multiple drain tile companies. Standard Water Control was very prompt in replying to our request, and was able to come out 2 days later for a formal quote. The quote (while not cheap), was in line with the other vendors we looked at. What really put Standard Water in position to be selected was their dedication to being able to complete the job quickly. Other companies were scheduling 8-9 weeks out, and Standard Water worked with us to find a quick turn around. We were lucky to be able to have the work done just 3 days later! When the crew arrived exactly at the promised time, they very quickly went to work setting up the area. The foreman walked me thru the basement, verifying the notes and drawings that the estimator had put together, where the sump would go, and where the discharge pipe would be. The crew was very efficient, and by the end of the first day, had completely dug up around the base of the foundation, laid the gravel and drain tile. After an inspection, the concrete guy came the following afternoon, and was able to seal up the system. It took a week for the concrete the harden enough for new carpet to be laid down, as the ground was quite wet. My only complaint was that while the crew tested the sump, the connection for the pump was quite loose, and had worked itself out, so when I tested it the next day, the pump did not work as expected. I used a zip-tie to ensure that the plug would stay in, and have checked it regularly since, with no problems.

Not a good experience, felt as if they were not interested and trying to charge as much as they possible. Could not provide any answers about why it would cost so much and if there was any alternatives. Told me I would have to rip down all new sheetrock. Another company came in at less than half the price. Felt like I couldn't trust the company.

Response from Standard Water Control Systems Inc
On July 19, 2013 we gave this member an estimate for a partial draintile system (42 feet of draintile at a cost of $3,120) with an option to expand to 130 feet of draintile at a cost of $5,980. At that time they chose to use another contractor. On July 10, 2014 the member requested another estimate for an expanded partial drain tile system (168 feet at a cost of $8900) and a complete draintile system (218 feet at a cost of $10,900). At this time the member wanted to make sure they would never have water in the basement again and stated cost was not a problem as they were taking the previous homeowners to court. The Member felt as long as the basement floor was being jackhammered in so many places it would look better if the entire floor was simply replaced. We didn’t believe it was necessary, but at the members request we added the new basement floor into the estimate along with an option for radon mitigation which brought the price to $25,000. The reason the stud walls would need to be removed is because the studs are supposed to sit directly on the cement. If we would have poured a concrete floor up to the level of the studs, they would have been cemented in. Eventually, we were subpoenaed by the former owners to testify where we stated much of the work the current homeowner was requesting was unnecessary. During the proceeding this member showed an estimate from a competitor that was nearly the same price as our estimate without replacing the floor. We, therefore, believe our pricing was more than competitive with the market. Further, the fact we gave two free estimates demonstrates we -- in no way -- tried to charge the homeowner as much as possible nor failed to provide options or alternatives. We wonder if the reason for this review is the member didn’t like our testimony combined with the fact they lost their case.

SWC was on time for our appointment and provided a clear and detailed estimate.
Description of Work: We only received an estimate from Standard Water Control (SWC) on basement tiling. We chose to go with another company for the basement work. I believe SWC estimate was fair and competitive. However, they wanted to do more than I felt I needed. We only did part of our basement tile system. SWC wanted to replace our sump pump as part of their estimate. I have a fairly new sump pump and a back-up siphon pump in place and did not want that replaced. I chose another provider who only did the retiling which tied into our system.

When I contacted them the response was immediate. We talked by phone, they mailed out informational literature and we agreed on a time/date for an estimate. He was on time, courteous and answered all my questions in detail. Their crews were booked out four to six weeks so I had time to clean out some my stuff to give them a working area. They wanted six feet clear from the wall but that is flexible. Also the washer and dryer must be out of the way. They covered everything but the work areas woth those huge sheets of poly! (A lot of dust is generated by jack hammering the floor). They emphasized that the work should be done in one day. Well that was 98% true. As it turns out the final concrete finishing had to be done the next morning. It took about 20 minutes. They were on time, friendly, courteous and professional. The price quoted was what was charged. I have recommended them to people I know and will continue to do so. It's really refreshing to do a substantial contract and have both parties know they got a good deal!

Best price. I was originally scheduled for January but requested ASAP. They did it December 1. I am a fairly critical customer and observed their work closely. No shortcuts, quality materials and workmanship. Very pleasant workers. Cleaned up what was a very messy job well. I would HIGHLY recommend Standard to anyone needing drain tile/water control work done. Thanks!

It was very loud with the jackhammering and very dusty, which we expected. But everything went according to schedule. Other Angies List reviews said that they left the place so clean after the job was completed. One said that they left their basement cleaner than it was before. Hmmmm.... there was a fine (and thick in places) dust left everywhere, and little cement chips (but not too bad for those). I am still cleaning out cabinet spaces. Even though we had plastic up, the dust still gets everywhere. This goes with the job no matter who does it. Standard did a good job overall.

In July we had drain-tile and radon mitigation scheduled with Standard for completion in January of 2015 and were really looking forward to this work being done especially because of the health issues associated with high radon levels. After getting several bids, we chose Standard for a number of reasons. They had a ton of great reviews by Angie's List users. After watching all of their online videos and reading all of their material they left us with the impression that they'd do the best quality job out of everyone we looked into. They also seemed to care a great deal for what was going to be best for our individual house. But most of all, after talking with them on the phone and talking to the owner in person who came out to look at our house, they came across as showing a great level of personal concern for us, their future customer. They left us with a very warm comfortable vibe. This week a different contractor came out to do some minor siding repair on our house and discovered that we have serious siding issues throughout the entire outer sheathing of our home. Unexpectedly, we now have to do a complete tear-off and reside next spring/summer when the weather conditions are right. Due to the extremely high cost of this unexpected siding job, we can't afford to do both jobs (siding & drain-tile) within such a short period of time. The siding is a much more pressing issue (our house is rotting) so it easily wins out. I called Standard to see if we could delay their work for 1-2 years. The total demeanor of Standard changed at that point. They turned very cold and blunt. I was told that unless the work was completed by July of 2015 (12 months from the signed contract), we'd be charged a 10% cancellation penalty. I went on to explain that we didn't want to cancel our contract, just delay it for 1-2 years. The siding job was unexpected and totally out of our control. It didn't matter, they showed no concern for our situation and were still going to hit us with a 10% penalty. I realize and fully understand that I'm bound by the precise words in the contract I signed. Under extenuating circumstances though, companies can and many times do take uncontrollable situations into consideration and work with their customers. They have the ability to show compassion and have flexibility when these sorts of things happen. Based on all of our prior interactions with Standard, that's what we expected. Instead, Standard's care turned from us and our house, to our money. They would still get paid under my proposal of delaying the work 1-2 years but instead, they leveraged the 10% penalty in the contract to extract as much money out of us that they could. I have a feeling they'd do the same if our house had burnt to the ground instead. In 1-2 years I'll have someone else do the work. I'm sure if there are no wrinkles along the process, Standard will come in and do a top quality job. Beware though that if anything beyond your control throws you a curve ball, Standard will not be there for you.

Response from Standard Water Control Systems Inc
This member initially contacted us in September of 2013 for an estimate on radon mitigation and basement waterproofing. After many months of phone calls and discussions -- along with an extra visit to the home by Gary in July, 2014 -- the member scheduled work for January 15th, 2015. He signed the contracts for drain tile & radon mitigation on August 11th, 2014 and mailed them in. We understand unexpected things occur. And when this member called us in November, 2014 to ask if he could be released from the contract he signed we said yes, providing he pay the 10% cancellation fee detailed in the contract to cover costs (outside the state mandated 3 day rescission period, of course). I also explained that if we do the work within 1 year we would credit the 10% to the current price of the job. We want to be fair to our customers, as it doesn’t benefit us to push people away. This member clearly demonstrates he fully understands his obligations under our contracts yet seems to believe it’s unfair to have to comply with those obligations. When faced with unexpected changes in our cost structure we abide by our contractual agreement with our customers. We believe this is fair to both the customer and the company to do so. On the other side of that coin we are happy to allow a customer to cancel a contract for a reasonable 10% fee (other companies have a 20% - 25% cancellation fee; this is very common in contracts). Even here we’re trying to be fair with our cancellation price, it’s far less than many. We believe if this member would compare cancellation fees, Standard Water would be among the lowest. We are truly sorry for the members situation, but believe the member is being unduly harsh in his evaluation of our policy.

We were very satisfied with the results and the prices were fair. We felt very comfortable working with them. They are established from 1977, and they are in several states. They started from here, and they continued to grow. They were here for 2 days, and with a 7 member crew. They did a whole lot, and we paid a whole lot. They did 41ft of drain tile. They were very experienced, and they showed a lot of confidence in their work, and they also embossed the cement with their logo. Anybody who would come in there could say that Standard Water did the work and so it should be good. The quality appears to be first rate, but it is yet untested, and we will know the next time there will be a flood. We always get water in the basement during 3 and 4 inch rains. They were a little more expensive than the other bids that we got. We picked the more expensive bid based on the level of professionalism, and the presentation, and the professional way that they handled us as their customers.
Description of Work: We just had major flood damage repaired. We are not putting furniture back from a June incident. We used a local home remodeling company. The repair involved removal of concrete floor in the basement to 18 inches of the wall, and there was a trench dug, and a technology applied, called the drain tile. A ball was put in the perforated PVC in the drain that they dug, and it was put in the stone, and a new sump pump was put in.

After thoroughly inspecting my basement and asking me about how long I had been in the house and how long it had been since the walls and floors had been painted (20 years or more), he told me that my walls were in excellent condition especially given the length of time since they had been painted by the previous owners. He recommended removal of any loose paint and repainting using DryLock paint. Despite some evidence of water seepage up through the floor around the perimeter, he didn't think that the situation was significant and that their drainage system wouldn't help in my case. I really appreciated his honesty for not trying to sell me a drainage system that I didn't need. For me, this is a hallmark of a great company. I highly recommend them to anyone who thinks that they might have a wet basement problem. I would be very confident that their work would be well done.
Description of Work: The sales representative came out to inspect the condition of my basement floor and walls with me due to my observations of looser paint closer to the floor and gradual lifting of paint from the floor around the perimeter over many years. Before going inside, he reviewed grading along the inside problem areas and grading improvements I had made. He then listened carefully to my observations about the basement walls and floor, explained to me how water migrates through a foundation, and showed me their computer video explanation of causes for wet basements and their remedy.

After a month of wet vacuuming the basement, due to record rainfalls, we needed help. We found Standard and another company on Angie's List. We also called a local company that we had seen a lot of signs for, in the yards of people, whom I assume had used their service. Standard, who came to the house last, came out the best in their presentation of what the would do, and how they would do it. Downside, they had the highest in price by about 10%, and were about seven weeks out on starting work. The other company from your list, gave a less adequate explanation of what they would do, and was priced about in the middle. They were about 4 weeks out on doing the job. When I asked about some of the things Standard said they would do, they said "Oh, well we do those things as well we just didn't mention it." Knowing from past experience, the difference between what a salesmen will say when trying to close a sale, and what the workers on site will actually do, I lost faith at this point that this was indeed the case. The local company had the worst presentation, and the lowest price. When I asked the local about some of the things Standard said they would do, he stated "None of that is necessary, but if I wanted it done, it would cost me more money." Turned out it was then higher than Standard. Only good thing, he could do the job in two weeks. Strike the local company. On the scheduled day, Standard Water Control Called early to let us know they would be late due to a scheduling conflict. On arrival the foreman re-explained what and how they would do the job. They wasted no time getting started, and when I asked for a completion time estimate, he said about 4 Hrs for their part of the job, it took 3 hr 45min. including cleanup. This is a two day process, Demo and install day one. Concrete finishing early on day one, again about 4 hr. including cleanup. If not for the dark color of the new concrete, you would not have known how much work had been done. Every thing that was promised has been done. It looks great and has worked great in the two down pours we have had since it was done. We got what we paid for, I would highly recommend Standard Water Control Systems to any one.
Description of Work: Installed drain tile system.

It would have costed $3700. I just haven't had the work done. My first impression was really good. I decided not to contract with them at that moment because of personal considerations. It wasn’t the cost of their work; they were actually pretty on par with some other companies I talked to. They didn't try to oversell. They came in and it was pretty clear what it would cost. Their bid is not just a quote: that would be the cost. With regard to responsiveness, it took a couple of months. Everybody is getting quotes here. Everybody was several months out: they weren't the only company.
Description of Work: The bid was for the whole basement plus the sump pump.

James was very helpful and professional. He could have sold us on a much larger waterproofing system than we already have, but let us know that the water issues we had were not due to waterproofing needs. We really appreciated his honesty and he even made recommendations on what we can do to that was minor. Everyone on the phone was very helpful too.
Description of Work: Evaluated our house for waterproofing needs due to leaking in basement.
