It was very good. They did the work and they did a fine job. There were 3 workers the first day and 2 the second day. It took a day in half. It was great! They're professional, cleanliness, and there timing stood out. I didn't even know they were there.

Kevin came out and did the estimate and was very efficient and thorough. Scott's team came in and did an excellent any fission job. They put up dust barriers around all of our stuff and were very careful with all of our belongings. Scott is an excellent team leader. Brent's team came in the next day and cemented the trench

After a thorough explanation of their solution to our wet basement woes, and a very reasonable price bid, we opted for SWCS, Inc. The team that did the work was outstanding. They were extremely efficient and clean, considering that this type of project invariably produces a good amount of dust. We are very pleased with the quality, cost and benefit. Recommended.

I contacted Mike at Standard Water to inquire about a problem with a French drain that was causing water to back up into our house. Mike asked questions and suggested that he call the city to get permit information regarding a drain tile that was installed before we bought the house. Mike called the city, immediately called me back with the company name and suggested I work with them to keep my warranty in good standing. Mike's assistance and information was extremely valuable!! He didn't get any money from the job, but provided outstanding customer service.

After a phenomenal amount of effort to prep for them, work seemed to go fine. 3 days after work was completed we had heavy rain, and I found some water, so I called them. They were very rude and said if it is not their system and under warranty, I would have to pay $150 for this visit. It took them one minute to determine it was a problem with the windows, and I was expected to fork over $150 right then and there. The owner himself is bullying me for the $150 and says he will not honor the warranty if I do not pay for services. I am wondering why they sold me $10,000 worth of work when what I needed was to repair the window situation, and if $10,000 worth of work doesn't earn me a tiny bit of post customer service/goodwill, what does?
Description of Work: I was getting water in the basement, esp. under windows. They suggested I needed the whole perimeter of my house done with their system, and showed me cracks in the foundation, and said they had special panels to cover those and get the water into their system. My sump was fairly new, but of course one has to get their special sump as part of their special system to get their lifetime warranty. I talked to several companies about the work....they seemed the most knowledgeable, and I desperately wanted a dry basement, they had a study from the U of M saying their systems was better than another commonly sold system that was much more expensive, and they touted their great customer service and warranty.

Response from Standard Water Control Systems Inc
The homeowner requested an estimate on July 28th, we sent a representative in early August. When our representative arrived she told him she had lived in the house since 1995; presumably, she had known about the water problem for some time as evidenced by one of our competitors waterproofing systems (a national dealership) having already been installed along with some of their window well systems. There were multiple sources of water intrusion and our system took care of those it was designed to take care of by replacing the waterproofing system that didn't work. The leaky windows were installed by the same company and, while we appreciate the homeowners frustration, she should be dealing with them as they certainly should have a warranty that covers such things. We were shown where water had been entering the basement and noted the water intrusion was happening in a number of places where there were no windows. The basement walls were poured concrete and not the typical hollow concrete block. Water was entering at the joint between the floor and wall and through cracks in the wall that had appeared over time. When we jackhammered the concrete, the soil under the basement floor was completely saturated as seen in some of the pictures we took; more evidence the water problem was not locally confined to the windows. More importantly our contract, read and signed by the homeowner, states explicitly "No warranty is made against water entering through windows". Further, everyone in the industry charges a service fee if they are called to a home where the problem is not associated with their service or products. This is done to cut down on frivolous service calls. We realize this kind of thing is upsetting to people, however, this homeowner was more upset than most and used extremely foul language with our staff on the phone. We don't believe our employees should be subjected to verbal abuse. Also, we explained the possibility of a service fee before we went out to the member's home. We believe the homeowner would be better served talking with the company who installed the leaky window well systems.

I called Standard because I thought that we might have water seeping into our basement bedroom. We had moved a bed to find that there was water damage on the carpet the drywall. The previous owners had sprayed foam where the wall met the floor to "fix" the problem. We already had one sump pump in the opposite corner of our finished basement. The salesman looked at the water damage, took pictures, and said that most likely the drain tile was improperly installed when the house was built in 1996. When I had called, I told the woman who answered that I wasn't sure if the problem was related to landscaping or if my basement needed waterproofing. (I suggested maybe the source was a hidden downspout pipe outside the basement in the landscaping.)She said that the salesman would make recommendations if we really didn't need a sump. We took the salesman outside to show him the landscaping, and he remained confident that it was improper drain tile. Long story short(er), I hired them to put in the new drain tile and sump at a cost of $2400. They did the work in one day. They cut an abs pipe while they were working, which they repaired and told me about after the job was done. The next week when the drywall repair person came, he removed the water damage drywall to find a leaking abs joint, which was the cause of the water. I called and talked to Mike, who asked a few questions, listened to me, and then apologized. He said that he would bring this up at the next meeting they have. I explained to him that I was disappointed about the misdiagnosis. He said that there was no way for anyone to know that there was a pipe in that wall. In hindsight, if I was more experienced in home repairs, I might have thought more about how small the area of water damage was, and considered other possibilities. Instead, I trusted that a salesperson with experience in basement water problems could suggest pulling off the damaged drywall or investigating further. Mike apologized and repeatedly stated that they rely on the information the homeowner gives. He offered NO other compensation. It's my recommendation that you only hire this company if you are ABSOLUTELY SURE that drain tile/sump pump will solve your basement water problems. If this is the case, I'm sure that they will do good work.(Unless cutting into an abs line is considered careless---I don't know if that is the case.) If you are looking to diagnose the source of water, don't rely on this company. I read a similar review to mine from December, 2015. (leaking abs was the source of the water, not outside water getting in) This tells me that this has happened before, but they haven't had any changes made to prevent this from happening again.

We are sorry this member had this experience with us and understand her frustration. Standard Water has waterproofed tens of thousands of basements since 1977 and, overall, has a remarkably low formal complaint number (lower than .1%). The quality of our work is reflected in Angie's List reviews as well; we receive more than 10 reviews with an A or B rating for every 1 review with a C or lower rating. We are proud of the work we've done for Angie's List members. In this situation our estimator, Todd, searched high and low for any indication the problem was anything but ground water. He took pictures of the downspouts, soil under the deck, the wall, etc. Plus, there was no indication that plumbing existed inside the 2x4 wall in question. When we interviewed the homeowner we were told the water only appeared after it rained. We place a lot of importance on the story the homeowner tells us as we are only there for about an hour during an estimate while the homeowner has lived there for years. Once we were satisfied that all obvious and typical causes had been addressed we offered to install a draintile system; to which the homeowner agreed. When our crew installed the new system they found a number of problems with the existing system that affected its performance. In the crews professional opinion the new draintile system was, indeed, needed. Some time later the homeowner called and mentioned a leak in the pipe. We believe it is possible there were several contributing factors to this homeowner's water problem; specifically, the old draintile system and the leaky pipe. We were able to correct one but had no idea the other existed as there was zero indication that any plumbing was hiding behind that wall.

In February I had Standard Water Control install a new drain tile system on a home. They did a fabulous job. Were very prompt in performing the service and haven't had water issues in the basement again even with the winter melt and big rains. Had another property that the sump pump went out on this week. I called and they were able to arrive in an hour and quickly replaced the sump pump for $575. Also installed an alarm so if the sump pump ever went out we would hear the warning alarm before we experienced the flooding in the basement. Very fast and great quality. Appreciate them very much!

Kevin came out to give us an estimate on a damp floor issue we are having. He was very professional and helpful. For a few months I was having a small water problem in my basement & couldn't determine where it was coming from. It seemed it was coming straight up through the basement floor. A relative suggested I call a waterproofing company to come & assess the problem. So in September 2015 I went onto Angie's List & found Standard Water Conrol Systems Inc. & called them. I credit that they were able to have someone come within a few days to give me an estimate, which I appreciated. The individual thought that the problem was that the water table was coming up & seeping into my basement & that the solution was to put into that area of the basement (not the whole basement) a drain tile & sump pump. I estimate I soon got was $2,340. I was quite taken aback with the amount of that estimate, so decided to call another waterproofing company for a second opinion. That person said that, since where the water was coming up was right near the chimney, he was absolutely POSITIVE that the water was coming down through the chimney & out at the bottom of the chimney & that I needed to find a mason to fix the chimney. It turned out that that WAS NOT the problem either (after paying a chimney mason a lot of money-probably didn't hurt to have that done but maybe not necessary). The problem I eventually discovered was a leaking water pipe under the basement floor that led from the kitchen sink & connected to the main water line. I discovered this myself by not using the kitchen sink for a couple of days to see if the water dried up. It did so I figured that was the problem. I then called a plumber who confirmed it. So I saved myself $1,700 by not having the drain tile/sump pump put in. It also confirmed to me that I ALWAYS should get two or three contractor estimates/opinions, especially when there is a lot of money involved! I would not recommend Standard Water Control Systems as they did not do due diligence to find out exactly what the problem was & almost cost me a lot of money & would not have fixed the problem.

First, let us say we're glad you were able to find the source of the water problem and now have it fixed. We appreciate your comments and take them seriously. We believe it's the best way to improve our company. We have been in the business almost 40 years and have worked on close to 30,000 homes and businesses and can honestly say the last thing we want to do is install a system that isn't needed. This is why we spend so much time at the home asking questions and inspecting the property inside & out. As thorough as we try to be, we still miss things. We do rely heavily on the homeowner for information, much like a doctor would with their patient; after all, you have lived in the home for 5 years and we are there for, maybe, an hour. This is also why we leave behind so much information and encourage homeowners to seek other opinions and estimates; so they can make a comfortable, informed decision. We spend a significant amount of time following up to see if there are other questions to ensure every homeowner has everything they need. Again, thank you for the opportunity to visit with you and we are sorry we fell short this time.

They showed up when they told me they would and the whole crew was very nice and respectful of my property and my two crazy dogs. They walked me through exactly what they would be doing and ended up being able to get the whole project done in one day. They had originally told me that there would be another crew showing up the following day to put down concrete but, since my job wasn't too big and they had the concrete crew coming to my neighbors house that day since they had installed drain tile at his house the day before (which was a larger job), they said they'd stay later to help the concrete crew get it all done at my house. They arrived at 9:00 a.m. and left at 5:30 p.m. They did a ton of work all in one day. I was amazed that they pulled buckets of dirt and old concrete out my small basement window and then loaded rock and then concrete through that same window. They covered my landscaping and didn't leave a mess. They covered anything I had in the basement and put plastic over all doors and covered the stairs. What an awesome crew!! I'd definitely recommend this company. I'm very happy with the work they did.

The process was very easy from beginning to end. 1. An estimator came out and consulted with us on what would be the best solution. 2. He provided a too do list of things we needed to complete to prepare for the installation. 3. He scheduled the installation for us. 4. The crew arrived exactly when they said they would, Jarrod was easy to work with and said he would take care of me. They hung poly all over to contain the dust and went to work. It took about 2.5 hours from the the time demo was started to install the system. 5. Jarrod walked me through the work they completed that afternoon and what the cement crew would be completing in ght morning. He also said the city inspector would be out in the morning at 9:00 am and he was. 6. The cement crew called in the morning and said they would be out at 9:00 to finish up. They completed their work, cleaned up and were gone within 1.5 hours. 7. My wife has mentioned a few times how surprised she was at the lack of mess. We are very satisfied with the process and would use them again.

My wife and I sent this letter to Michael W. Hogenson, president of Standard Water Control Systems, Inc. on April 28, 2015. He never responded. My wife and I chose Standard Water from 5 companies we found on Angie's List. We appreciated the video that Kevin Teslaa (sales Person) showed us of how dirty this project would be. So, we were prepared. We also liked the idea of using a basement window to take out the broken up cement and soil and bring in the new gravel, drainpipe, and cement. We appreciate the technology that goes into a Standard Water solution. We also appreciated the care that the crew took with the work performed inside the house and we are satisfied with this work. We have problems with the clean up described below. Here is the context. Our house sits on a 40 foot city lot. We have gardens and no lawn. Four feet separate our house fro our neighbor's property. And there is a boulder that blocks easy access to the basement window. To move cement or soil from the basement to the street a worker had to fill a bucket in the basement, lift it up through the window, another worker picked it up and slid it across the plywood on top of the boulder. Then a third worker picked the bucket up and placed it in a wheelbarrow to take to a truck. The first day involved removal. Day two was bringing in gravel, drainpipe, and cement. We understand that this was a difficult job, yet we were assured that care would be taken with our garden and driveway. Following are the problems with the clean up. First, when the workers had finished putting in the new cement, one of the workers collected all of the tools and washed them out in our garden in front of our house. I just happened to look out as he finished. I was angry about this, but it had already been done. A couple of weeks later, as soon as it warmed up, I spent two hours trying to scrape up the rocks, cement chunks, and sandy cement soil. Again, a month later, I spent another half hour going over the same area. This is a shade garden under a birch. The soil is very thin and we have had some success growing a few fragile shade plants. These plants have not come up yet this year. We know you can not throw all of your tools that have a layer of wet cement in the back of your truck. The cement will set up. But, if you have to wash off your tools in our yard, why not ask us were to do this. We were home all day. We would have had you do it on the side of the house on the crushed rock next to the basement window. A second problem involved the pipes that exit the house onto the driveway. When cementing around the pipes the worker did not put down a piece of cardboard or plastic. There are now gray cement splotches on or tan/coral colored drive. Also, the crew left a small mess in our neighbor's yard.

First, we’re glad you’re happy with the overall job. Second, I apologize for the issues that occurred. Also, thank you for your comments. We love hearing from customers about ways we can be better at what we do. I’m sorry for not getting back to you … from your letter it wasn’t apparent to me that you wanted a response. I thought you just meant to bring this to our attention. I used your comments in our regular training sessions to give our crews a real-world example. Attention to details like these can make all the difference in customer satisfaction. Again, thank you for your constructive comments, I really appreciate them. Please feel free to call me if there’s anything else I can do for you. Best Wishes, Mike Hogenson President Standard Water Control Systems, Inc.

Let me preface this by saying that my major pet peeve with contractors is that many of them either ignore, exploit, or seem to be ignorant of the fact that while they perform various high end services every day of their lives, the homeowner is likely to buy those services maybe once or twice in a lifetime, I think this company generally does good work, but I think that in order to secure the bid, they are pretty vague in letting you know that they are not likely to really be done with your house, once they have put in the drain tile. They showed up on time and finished on time. They have an excellent reputation with other contractors for doing quality work in the area of basement waterproofing, so I assume that the drain tiling will work as promised. I think they should, however, warn people in a clearer way that the system they install will very likely require radon mitigation in this area (Minnesota). I also think that they should include caulking of the system as part of the service (which would, of course, cost more, and they might lose the bid, but then the job would be done). It feels to me that I didn't get a clear radon warning until after the system had been installed, as part of a marketing ploy to sell me radon mitigation, which they also do, and which more than likely was predictable with this system, which leaves an open crack around the entire perimeter of the basement, and which really needs to be caulked regardless of one's radon situation. A very mixed experience. The cost below reflects the fact that I had to also buy radon mitigation, which I didn't buy from them.

Representative spent about 30-45 minutes looking over the situation (inside and outside) - suggested we first try a less expensive fix (cementing an area between patio and house near seepage point), cleaning guttering. When we asked about the price of the consult, we were told absolutely no charge. Very courteous, knowledgable -obviously ethical. If it turns out we do need a sump pump, we know who we'll go to.
Description of Work: Had the provider out to look at a water seepage issue - anticipated needing drain tiles/sump pump in one corner of basement.

I would really like to see basement water-proofing companies pair with landscaping companies. I thought that I would learn more about drainage and water control from my initial visit with this company. Since both my neighbors have sump pumps, I jumped the gun and assumed that I needed one. Then I talked to my uncle (who has remodeled several basements) and some old-timers in my neighborhood. I learned many things about drainage from them, such as the fact that water likes to flow vertically unless you have a soil like clay underneath. From the old-timers, I learned that I have bedrock underneath my house, and not peat like some parts of the neighborhood. I then looked at my neighbors houses and saw that they would not be able to control water next to their foundation because of the way their roofs are shaped. I have only been in my house for 2 years, so like I said I think I jumped the gun by signing a contract. I did have water during the summer of 2014. However, I did have a leaking chimney (now fixed) and a part of my landscaping that was not up to pair. For now I am going to fix some of my landscaping and clean my gutters and see what happens from there. I have not had any water in my basement this summer. Like I said, I think it would be great if these companies would pair with landscaping companies, or learn more about the soil types and history of water damage in the neighborhoods. I would've liked to have learned all of those things in my initial visit (type of soil underneath, history of water damaged basements in the area, etc...). It parallels doctors of today who just see a problem that needs to be fixed instead of looking at the patient as a whole. If I do ever need an interior drain tile system, I would probably still go with this company. They are very straightforward. I thought their price was reasonable. They also have an extremely good reputation in my neighborhood. They offered me $500 off if I scheduled in July, which was nice but also put a little bit of pressure on to quickly make a decision. I really wanted to finish my basement for a renter so I rushed my decision. For now I am going to be patient and not get this system until I fully understand why water would possibly come into my basement
Description of Work: I received a quote for an interior drain system for $4000. Signed a contract but ended up not proceeding with the work, hence the $500 cost.

The entire team has done a fantastic job in educating and recommending up front, keeping us in the loop throughout the entire process and actually performing the job. They showed up when they said they were going to, were professional, completed the jobs on time and did high-quality work. I was impressed at how much work they are able to complete in such a short time and how well I, and my home, was treated throughout the process. I would absolutely recommend their services to anyone looking to have this work completed. They laid down plastic across my floor even though I told them they didn't need to because I'm remodeling a majority of my house and will be tearing out the flooring anyway. They hung plastic in the basement to protect everything I had down there from dust and sealed it incredibly well with tape. They cleaned up every speck of dirt and dust made from the process. The cement crew did an amazing job with leveling the cement as best they could. Each individual team walked me through all of the work they were going to complete, walked me though what they did complete and explained everything I needed to know and answered all of the questions I had. I dinged them a bit on professionalism because the crews smoked cigarettes a lot throughout a majority of the exterior work. Though I'm not a huge fan of smoking and would have allowed it anyway since I would not have been standing there breathing it in nor was it done inside, I was never asked how I felt about them smoking on my property and ended up finding one cigarette butt left on my property. Only other thing that disappointed me was when digging the hole for the egress window, I had them dump the dirt into a couple raised flower gardens I have been working on, saving me money in buying dirt and them in having to haul it away. They moved a few layers of the retaining wall brick so they could dump wheel barrows of dirt in rather than single buckets at a time (they asked for permission prior, which was excellent!). However, when they were completed, they did not clean up the dirt that ended up on top of the bricks that were there and just haphazardly placed the bricks back into place. So after they left I had to remove all of the bricks again, clean up all the dirt and properly place the bricks back. A little disappointed with that, but that has no bearing on the actual installation of the egress window, which was very well done!
Description of Work: Installed interior drain tile with battery backup sump pump and egress window.
