I had asked Standard to come out because I had water in my basement. I thought it may have been a failure in the drain tile installed by a different company. Standard recommended that I contact the company that had installed the drain tile because Standard's drain tiling system was different than what I had in place. They also did not not want to cause me additional expense or void any warranties with the company that had installed the tile. I later found out that it was my sump pumps that had failed, not the tile. I had my pumps replaced by the company that had done my drain tiling and everything works great now. The pumps were original to the house when we bought it.

Given the rep. of this company, my experience, has thus far been disappointing. The person who came to meet with me the first time (polite, seemingly competent) measured my basement and told me what would happen including where the pipe would exit the house and what I needed to do to prepare. When the workers arrived to do the work, I was told that the pipe would have to exit in a different place because of the baseboard heating system in my basement. The baseboard heating system in my basement was there during the estimate. Where the pipe exits is about the ugliest place you can imagine. The installer told me that I could, for a lot more money, have the exit pipe buried in the spring. I would have waited to do the entire job until then, but the estimator did not even mention this. Now I've called to inquire about the buried exit pipe and have been told that if I would have done it at the time of the original work it would have been much cheaper. It is at least $200 more now than

The repairman was punctual and efficient. However, he installed a Little Giant 6-CIA pump, which list prices for $239.00, and can be bought for $120.00-$140.00 on the Internet, and charged me $300.00 for the pump, another $20.00 for a check valve, and another $100.00 for installation/truck charge. What a rip! It took him 1/2 hour max to install it.

THE MEMBER CALLED OUR EMERGENCY LINE ON A SUNDAY AND LEFT A MESSAGE THAT HER SUMP PUMP HAD FAILED. HER CALL WAS RETURNED IN LESS THAN FIFTEEN MINUTES. WE OFFERED TO COME OUT AND REPLACE HER PUMP THAT VERY DAY BUT IT WAS DECIDED THAT MONDAY WOULD BE FINE. DURING THE INITIAL PHONE CALL SHE WAS QUOTED EXACTLY WHAT THE PRICE WOULD BE TO REMOVE HER FAILED PUMP AND INSTALL A NEW ONE. SHE AGREED AND REQUESTED THE SERVICE CALL. ON MONDAY MORNING OUR SERVICE TECH CALLED HER TO SET UP A TIME THAT WAS CONVENIENT FOR HER TO REPLACE THE PUMP. THE SERVICE TECH ARRIVED, INSTALLED THE NEW ONE AND REMOVED THE BAD ONE FOR PROPER DISPOSAL. THE SAME PRICE WAS QUOTED TO HER AGAIN DURING THE SERVICE CALL. SHE AGREED AND SIGNED THE PAPER WORK AND PAID WITH A CREDIT CARD. LATER THAT DAY SHE CALLED THE OFFICE AND SAID SHE WAS A MEMBER OF ANGIE’S LIST AND WANTED A DISCOUNT. SHE CALLED AGAIN TO CLAIM SHE COULD PURCHASE THE PUMP MUCH CHEAPER ORDERING IT FROM AN INTERNET SITE AND INSISTED THAT SHE BE GIVEN A DISCOUNT “OR ELSE." WE ENCOURAGED HER TO CALL OTHER PLUMBERS OR CONTRACTORS TO COMPARE PRICES, AVAILABILITY AND SERVICE ON REPLACING HER PUMP. WE ALSO OFFERED TO SEND THE SERVICE TECH BACK OUT THAT SAME DAY TO REMOVE THE PUMP AND GIVE HER A COMPLETE REFUND. WE REPLACE HUNDREDS OF PUMPS EVERY YEAR AND EVERYONE WHO CALLS KNOWS WHAT THE PRICE WILL BE PRIOR TO A SERVICE CALL BEING SCHEDULED. THERE SHOULD BE NO SURPRISES. THE PRICES WE CHARGE FOR OUR SERVICES ARE VERY COMPETITIVE WITHIN OUR INDUSTRY.

They came out within 48 hours after my first call to give me an estimate. I hired them immediately since they were recommended so highly by Angie's List. They called me within 48 hours to give me the dates they could do the work. They kept in constant contact and always there to answer questions. They arrived on the date they said they would, didn't get one speck of dirt in my upstairs, were very conscientious regarding my property. The crew was very pleasant and the head person Jerod introduced himself and gave me a tour of the work. Very pleasant experience. Excellent company to work with.

We were very pleased with Standard. We chose them because of their expertise, competitive pricing, and easygoing manner. They were pleasant, extremely efficient, and great at communicating with us at all stages of the project. I interviewed three or four other companies, and Standard was the one that stood out as the most knowledgeable and professional. They provided (without my asking for it) a long list of people in our area who agreed to be references; great selling tool! At the same time, they were not at all "Hard sell," which I appreciated. Their customer service is also great. When I thought I had a problem with leakage, the president of the company called me and politely let me realize that we'd left a window open in the basement so the rain came in. Duh! I also decided after-the-fact that I wanted a back-up pump. Because it was only a month or so after the drain tile installation, they knocked $100 off of my bill. I highly recommend this company.

Representative (Todd) arrived at the house very promptly within about 2 hours of my call about an inoperative sump pump. He determined that the pump would run but explained that the diaphragm switch was probably getting inflexible with age. We decided to go ahead and replace the pump, which he did immediately in about 10 minutes. He also replaced the critter screen on the sump outflow line. Todd was prompt and very professional. We would use Standard Water Control again.

Mixed feelings on this company and using them. I have no doubt the final product will work well and the actual people that installed the system were very good... but I had a bad experience with the owner. The workers broke a pipe while installing the system. Now to be fair to this company, the pipe was old and probably broke from the vibration of the jackhammers when removing the concrete. What shocked me was how rude the owner was when I called. He was a jerk to me when I told him what happened and said that if I had read my contract carefully, I would have found that they are not liable for this. All I wanted was an apology but he wouldn't even give that. With the exception of the owner, everyone else at the company seemed professional.

ON 10-15-07, WE DID INSTALL A DRAIN TILE & SUMP PUMP SYSTEM IN THIS MEMBER'S HOME. DURING HIS INITIAL CALL TO OUR OFFICE, HE EXPLAINED HE HAD AN OLDER HOME, BUILT IN 1919. DURING THE INSTALLATION WE HELPED HIM OUT BY MOVING THE SINK IN THE BASEMENT. WE DISCOVERED ONE OF THE PIPES THAT WERE ATTACHED TO THE SINK WAS ROTTEN AND RUSTY AND IT FELL APART. THE MEMBER WANTED TO KNOW IF WE WERE GOING TO FIX IT. IF WE WOULD HAVE CAUSED THE BROKEN PIPE, WE WOULD HAVE GLADLY MADE THE REPAIRS. I SAID NO, IT WAS A PREEXISTING PROBLEM THAT WAS NOT OUR RESPONSIBILITY. IN ALL OF OUR PAPERWORK IT CLEARLY STATES “WE WILL BE HAPPY TO HELP YOU MOVE THINGS OUT, BUT WE CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGES.” IF THAT IS BEING A JERK, THAN I AM GUILTY. WHAT THE MEMBER FAILED TO MENTION WAS THAT APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS AFTER THE JOB WAS COMPLETED AND PAID FOR, HE CALLED OUR OFFICE AND EXPLAINED HE HAD FOUND US ON ANGIE'S LIST AND HE WANTED HIS $100.00 DISCOUNT. I CHECKED HIS FILE AND OUR RECORDS INDICATED THAT WHEN HE FIRST CALLED HE STATED THAT HE WAS REFERRED BY A FRIEND. I EXPLAINED HE WAS SUPPOSED TO GIVE US THE COUPON AT THE TIME OF THE INITIAL APPOINTMENT. HE SAID HE HAD NO PRINTER. I THEN EXPLAINED THAT WE HAD A REFERRAL PROGRAM AND HIS FRIEND WAS TO RECEIVE A CHECK FROM US. I TOLD HIM IF HE WOULD LIKE I WOULD MAKE AN EXCEPTION AND IF HE CHOSE, WE WOULD SEND HIM THE $100.00 INSTEAD AND HE CHOSE THE CHECK. I THINK I WAS MORE THAN FAIR WITH THIS MEMBER.

We had used them before to replace a broken sump pump. They left information on their backup system at that time. We thought $1200 was steep, but after finishing our basement we thought it a good investment. They came out within a week. The sump is in our family room so I was concerned about having a second discharge pipe to hide. The worker was able to push the pipe through the foundation instead of the framing, so it was hidden by cabinetry. He had to cut the drywall to conceal the pipe as well. He could have cut the drywall at the stud (only 3 more inches from where he cut) so it would have easily popped back into place. He threw out the drywall, insulation and vapor barrier. So he cleaned up well! but it was stuff that needed to go back. While the sump was installed properly and will likely work as it's supposed to for years to come, a little consideration during his demo would have went a long way. I had to find drywall, insulation and plastic to replace what he threw out.

Gary McLanahan answered the phone and I explained the situation. He asked me a few questions and within a matter of 3 minutes he put my mind at ease. The situation with our wall was this: when the house was built, any house foundation wall under a garage might not be waterproofed as other outside walls would have been. Fifty years ago they believed that moisture would not travel under the garage. WRONG! Due to the recent rains we were experiencing moisture under the garage and it was coming through the porous cement block. We hadn't seen it in years prior because we hadn't been under the stairs until we demoed for the remodel. Gary assured me that the block was stable, that our remodelers would be able to finish the wall with just minor additional prep (latex waterproof paint and 6 mil vapor barrier before framing). Thanks Gary!
Description of Work: I phoned Standard Water Control System after seeing that we were getting significant water staining on the basement cement block wall under our the garage foundation. Because we were in the midst of a complete basement remodel, I was very concerned that we were experiencing a serious water issue and would have to slow or stop the remodel to deal with the water. Needless to say, I was extremely concerned.

As mentioned on their internal survey, there were several problems that we had: 1.the amount of wall they cut to put the drain tile in was "too aggressive." Even after another $3000+ worth of repairs, everything is not close to where it was before they came in. 2. The information I was told from the sales rep differed from what the foreman actually did. Instead of replacing grass where they cut through for the extension, they simply "fold it over." 3. One thing to be careful about: the foremen on the job only are there for day 1, not for day 2. If there are any problems, which we did have, it does take a while for them to come back out. To their credit, they did fix errors that they had on their website as far as payment options were concerned. They certainly do need to have more information available as far as their financing options; neither the reps I talked to or the finance company could actually tell me what the interest rate was.

STANDARD WATER CONTROL HAS BEEN IN BUSINESS SINCE 1977 AND HAVE SOLVED OVER 18,000 WATER PROBLEMS. WE WORK HARD TO COMMUNICATE WITH OUR CUSTOMERS TO GIVE THEM AS MUCH INFORMATION AS WE CAN IN ADVANCE OF THE JOB START (VIDEOS, DVD’S, REFERENCES, PREPARATION LETTERS). THE CONTRACTS ARE WRITTEN IN CLEAR TERMS. EVEN WITH ALL THAT, IT’S POSSIBLE TO HAVE A MISUNDERSTANDING SUCH AS WE NO LONGER ACCEPT AM EXP, WHICH WAS STILL ON OUR WEBSITE. (I APOLOGIZE FOR THIS OVERSIGHT). OVER THE YEARS WE HAVE FOUND THAT THE MOST EFFICIENT AND BEST WAY FOR OUR SYSTEM TO BE INSTALLED IS TO HAVE TWO CREWS, EACH HAVING AN EXPERIENCED FOREMAN. THIS WAY WE CAN HAVE EACH CREW SPECIALIZE IN THEIR AREAS, GIVING YOU OUR CUSTOMER A HIGHER QUALITY JOB. THE FIRST CREW PREPS THE JOB AND INSTALLS THE DRAIN TILE AND SUMP PUMP. THE SECOND CREW POURS THE CEMENT BACK, FINISHES THE FLOOR, AND THEN SWEEPS UP. DURING OUR INITIAL VISIT TO THE HOME WE EXPLAIN WHAT TO EXPECT AND WHEN NECESSARY, DUE TO EXISTING CONDITIONS BEYOND OF OUR CONTROL, WALLS MAY NEED TO BE TRIMMED. WE TELL THE CUSTOMER THAT WE CAN DO THIS FOR YOU AT NO EXTRA CHARGE, BUT WE ARE NOT CARPENTERS AND YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS OR YOU CAN HIRE SOMEONE TO DO THE TRIMMING BEFORE THE START OF THE JOB. TRY AS WE MIGHT WE ARE NOT PERFECT AND WE DO MAKE MISTAKES. WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON THE FACT THAT IF YOU CALL WITH A PROBLEM, WE WILL COME TO THE HOME AND MAKE THE ADJUSTMENTS. I AM TRULY SORRY WE FELL SHORT OF THE MEMBER'S EXPECTATIONS.

Dave came out to look at our basement which has never had water in 80 years, but got some wetness this August with all the rain. He looked at our recently fininished basement and said it would be way too expensive to tear things up and put in tile, and we probably weren't in need of it anyway. He recommended some other options after seeing our grading away from the house was good. Plastic sheeting first, gutters next if the plastic didn't work (we have a roofline that would be difficult to add gutters to, but he said getting an estimate couldn't hurt). He spent a good deal of time with me discussing options, even after it was clear his company would not be doing work for us. Amazing in this day and age. It is heartening to know there are companies like Standard out there who are most interested in treating people with respect and professionalism, and who truly want the best for their customers, even if that means not doing the work. I would hire them in a heartbeat.

Gary came out promptly to assess the situation. He was very personable and brought us some literature to review. He definitely seemed to have a lot of expertise about basement waterproofing, however we weren't as confident with his knowledge of proper/best foundation repair. We received the estimate via mail within the week, a survey and a follow-up phone call a couple of weeks later. By that point, we had decided to go with a different company, and I was a little irked by the phone call because the person I spoke with was second-guessing our decision and it was a little unpleasant.

The 2 man team that arrived was very professional and did a fantastic job. The entire job took only around 3 hours. They had the window in place in about an hour and spent the rest of the time working on the floor. It was amazing to me that they were willing to smoothen out the floor free of charge, especially since I was not the original home owner when the drain tile system was installed. Additionally, the idea to smoothen out the floor, at no cost, was provided by the gentleman who provided the original project quote. This is probably the best customer service I have ever received! When the job was complete, I spent a few minutes talking with one of the workers about the best way to finish off the basement. He was more than willing to answer all of my questions and also offered several suggestions. I would definitely hire this company again for other services.

It went very well. Standard representative Gary McClanahan looked over the problem and suggested several possible remedies, only one of which involved work by his company. His approach was very forthright, and we came away with an alternative we should try (landscaping, guttering), which will probably solve the problem without more expensive indoor drain tile and pump installation. I was impressed that the evaluation was more toward "solving the problem" in the most cost effective way, rather than selling construction services. If I do end up needed basement waterproofing, you can be sure, I will call Standard immediately.

Very professional with great communication. The salesman who wrote the quote was very thorough in explaining the process, offered excellent placement suggestions for both the pump, (needing an electrical outlet) and the outflow. The company sent a list of local past customers I could contact as references, and followed up on scheduling, providing good information on the prep(moving furnishings to the center of the basement). They worked with the plumber I contacted to raise the drain access line. The workers were very courteous, covered everything, and cleaned up well, and called to tell me when they left and locked up. I would definitely recommend them!

The estimator was on time, quick, and efficient. He explained the process well to me and left a DVD describing the process so my husband could watch that when he had the time. The work crews were on time, completed the job in the time frame they had indicated and did a very nice job of cleaning up after themselves. The City Building Inspector had no problem with the installation. Our only problem was that our cats walked on the wet concrete and left paw prints but other than that, the work done by Standard Water was faultless.
