Services we offer
Interior drain tile & sump pump systems - battery backup pumps. Installation - egress windows, glass block windows & window wells. Foundation repair & reinforcement. Radon Mitigation.
First visit for estimate was great. He was very thorough in giving us all info, answered lots of questions, and never once pressured us to sign anything while he was there. The old drain tile was put in by previous owners and we could not find any information on what company put it in so we had to just replace it since it was still allowing water in to the basement. Estimate seemed better than I had even expected based on having read many reviews here on Angie's list so we went with them even though they were the only estimate we got. Workers arrived right on time. They created a tunnel of plastic from my basement door to the work area that covered everything so that I did not have to deal with the dust that I thought I'd have to deal with. They cleaned up perfectly. I was very happy with the work.
Description of Work: Replaced 30 feet of drain tile in basement with new drain tile. Also replaced sump pump.

The basement has had a water problem for years, and only seemed to be getting worse. I tried to research options to correct the problem and looked at a number of different options/bids. Standard's was very competitive (one bid was 1,200 more for the same service), and presented the best informational packet along with references (along with a lifetime warranty). The estimator and Mike (follow-up calls to the office) were very professional and helpful in explaining the whole process. The crew arrived when scheduled and worked a good 10 hours straight to complete the job in one day. I was amazed at the amount of work it took to install the system. I would highly recommend them both for the drain tile install and the glass block work.

We searched Angie's List for a vendor and asked Standard Water Control Systems to give us a bid. The bid was reasonable and we were convinced they knew how to do a good job. We decided to do about 2/3s of the basement since we didn't think we needed the entire perimeter done (and the cost would have been quite a bit higher to do so). The job went very smoothly. We had pulled furniture etc. from the perimeter and covered everything we could (the process creates a lot of cement dust) beforehand. The crew came in the next day and covered everything that we hadn't. They completed the job and the cleanup in one day. We are happy with the job they did and will most likely have them do a radon abatement job for us in the near future.

egress windows

Standard Water was one of three companies from which we received estimates for egress window installation. They came to the home and did a thorough estimate for two egress windows, taking all of the measurements required to make an accurate estimate. They split the estimate so that we had an accurate cost on having either or both windows installed. They provided extensive information about the quality of the product and how the work would proceed. We decided to have one window installed, and there was no pressure or guilt about not doing the other one. They were somewhat higher cost than the one other estimate we received, but we had far more confidence in Standard Water's ability to deliver a quality product based on the estimate. We scheduled the work for three weeks later. Standard Water had to reschedule due to their work crew being out of state the day previous to our job--they were very proactive about rescheduling, and understood their workload well enough to do so efficiently. The work crew was very courteous, very respectful of our property and our family, and efficient in their work. The quality of the product was just as excellent as their presentation at estimate time indicated. The company has called to follow up at one week, one month and 4 months after the work to make sure that it was still satisfactory. On the most recent call, Mike shared a tip to reduce radon emmissions that I could do myself, unprompted, which I am looking forward to implementing. Our experience with Standard Water was the most satisfactory experience I have had with a contractor. I will use them again for any further work we do that they are capable of providing.

Our backup sump pump (installed by another company a few years ago) stopped working. Based on Angie's List reviews for them, we decided to call Standard Water Control to see what our options were. Their representative gave me information on the cost to come out and diagnose the problem, along with their hourly repair rate and an approximate cost to replace the unit if we decided to go that route. We were able to schedule an appointment within a short period of time, and to meet our schedule. The serviceman arrived on time and found a loose wire connection that was the cause of the problem. He also found that the drain pipe had become loose where it attached to the main pump, so he re-glued that into place. The pumps were back in business within a half-hour. I was very pleased with the service and will certainly call them again if the sump pump needs more work in the future.

I appreciate that he didn?t just try to sell us on an expensive system that we didn?t really need! A friend-of-a-friend had told me that this company was nice, and I would recommend them to a friend if asked.
Description of Work: I made an appointment to have this company look at our basement because it is rather musty. The estimator who came to my house was early for the appointment, and after looking at our basement, said that he didn’t see any evidence of actual water incursion and thought that installing drain tile would be overkill and wouldn’t do much to help us. He recommended some other things we could do that would help eliminate the mustiness while being cheaper and easier to do.

It was an excellent experience. They did a good job and they did it efficiently. The price was reasonable. We got 3 names from angies list and my husband placed the calls. One person never called back and another person called back after 2 weeks. We had used Standard water control previously for water control and we used them again. We really liked them. They came when they said they would. They cleaned up after themselves. They did a good job. We are very happy with them.

I talked to three companies. Standard's price was in the middle, but they seemed much more professional than the lowest bidder. They explained exactly what would be done and gave me pamphlets and a DVD. They showed up on time to do the work. The foreman introduced himself right away. Before he even stepped into the house he started rolling out plastic. Never once did any of the workers step on the bare floor. He took me down and we went around the basement. He showed me exactly what he was going to do. We had a lot of stuff in our basement that we had moved away from the walls, and they covered it all in plastic for me so that it wouldn't get dirty. They had to run stuff back and forth from the basement window to their truck in a wheel barrow. Before they started that they layed down plywood to protect the lawn. The work lasted from eight in the morning to nearly nine at night. They very easily could have gone and come back the next day to finish it, but they worked late so that they could fininsh it in one day. I was very impressed with their profesionalism and respect for me and my property.

It went well. I appreciated that they really seemed to know what they were doing, explained it well, were very professional and polite while in my house, covered the stuff I could not remove from the basement and left the worksite clean. My only wish is that they would help (for an extra charge) prepare the site for the work - it was a ton of work to get ready, including removing a toilet and an extremely heavy cement laundry sink and removing a built-in bench. I would happily have paid them to do that instead of me.

Very aggressive in trying to get a signed proposal. Tried to schedule without giving me time to think about it and my phone has since been ringing off the hook as they try to get me to commit to them. Estimate was much more than other companies rated just as highly, and while I am sure they would do a good job, I decided to go with another company whose style is a little more laid back.

Response from Standard Water Control Systems Inc
UNFORTUNATELY THERE APPEARS TO BE SOME CONFUSION, MISUNDERSTANDING, MISINTERPRETATION, OR MISIDENTIFICATION. NONETHELESS, WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE PERCEIVED IMPRESSION THIS MEMBER HAS. THE ONLY PHONE CONTACT WE HAVE HAD WITH THIS MEMBER WAS THEIR INITIAL CALL REQUESTING AN APPOINTMENT FOR AN ESTIMATE. STANDARD WATER CONTROL NEVER HAS AND NEVER WILL BE AGGRESSIVE IN PUSHING SOMEONE INTO A DECISION. OUR APPROACH IS QUITE THE OPPOSITE. WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON GIVING THE HOME OWNER AS MUCH INFORMATION AS THEY NEED TO MAKE A COMFORTABLE INFORMED DECISION. THIS INCLUDES LEAVING THEM WITH THE PROPOSAL, LITERATURE, A DVD VIDEO, AND A REFERENCE LIST OF 60 NAMES,ADDRESSES AND PHONE NUMBERS OF OUR CUSTOMERS THAT LIVE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA WHO HAVE GIVEN US PERMISSION TO US THEM AS A REFERENCE SO YOU MAY CALL THEM BEFORE MAKING A DECISION. A FOLLOW UP QUESTIONNAIRE IS SENT OUT FOR THE HOMEOWNER TO FILL OUT AND RETURN IN A PREPAID ENVELOPE. IN ADDITION WE FOLLOW UP WITH A PHONE CALL 3 TO 7 DAYS AFTER THE APPOINTMENT TO MAKE SURE THE CUSTOMER HAS ALL THEY NEED. THE EARLIEST A FOLLOW UP CALL WOULD HAVE BEEN FEB 23. THIS MEMBER FILED THIS REPORT FEB 25. AT BEST THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN 2 ATTEMPTED CALLS WITH NO ANSWER. OUR RECORDS SHOW NO PHONE CONVERSATION WITH THIS MEMBER SINCE THE INITIAL CALL TO US NOR HAVE WE RECEIVED THE FOLLOW UP QUESTIONNAIRE. IN ADDITION, OUR PRICES ARE GENERALLY RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR COMPETITORS. THAT BEING SAID, THERE ARE A COUPLE OF COMPETITORS THAT AT TIMES DO PRACTICE HIGH PRESSURE SALES TECHNIQUES AND ARE MUCH HIGHER PRICED THAN WE ARE. AS OF MARCH 11TH, THE DATE THIS RESPONSE WAS POSTED, THERE HAS BEEN NO PERMIT PULLED FOR ANY WORK AT THIS MEMBERS ADDRESS. SO IF THE MEMBER HAD THE WORK DONE BY ANOTHER COMPANY ALREADY I GUESS THE MEMBER IS CORRECT, THEY ARE MORE LAID BACK THAN US. WE ARE SORRY WE MISSED OUT.

They came in and did a fascinating process with something called a 'hot box'. They put that in place for forty eight hours to thaw the ground. I was at work while a lot of this was done. They came in, dug it out and installed the window. They also installed the steps. They did this in a very short amount of time.

Mike Hogenson is extremely patient and knowledgeable about basement waterproofing, wall repair and radon abatement systems. After several estimates from other companies, we decided to hire his company because of the time he spent answering my questions and explaining the options ( I'm not the easiest client because I ask a ton of questions and am inherently skeptical of everything I hear). The team is very service oriented. They did their work efficiently and cleaned up very well when the job was done. Some errors, part mine and part Standard's, were corrected efficiently and without complaint. I hope I never need basement repair again, but I would highly recommend this company to anyone needing these services.

I had Standard Water install a drain tile system quite a few years ago, so I was familiar with the quality of their work. The only thing I was concerned about this time was that my back door was wide open when I came home at lunchtime to check on things. I have two cats, and I was afraid they had gotten out. The cats were both in the house, and they kept the door shut after that. I had not mentioned to them that I had cats.
Description of Work: The radon levels in my house were too high. Standard Water Control Systems came out and installed a radon mitigation system that included an exterior fan assembly and an exterior exhaust pipe the exterior wall through the eaves. They also performed a follow-up short-term radon test, and gave me a long-term test to put up for several months.

The sump pump was estimated in one location but then later moved. The foreman that showed up was told about changes and they didn't communicate to others. It was a good thing I was home to make sure the job was installed as desired. They did a nice job cutting the cement and hauling out the dirt, I did ask questions to make sure the job was done right. I think the crew was a little lax in their quality so watching and asking questions really helped. They also didn't do a very good job sealing up the discharge hose holes. I could see light and got on the workers - which made me feel bad that I had to. My neighbor across the street had a 5 gallon bucket of dried cement he asked if he could throw it on the truck and the foreman asked for $20. I later learned the foreman "forgot" to turn it in and the company refunded the money to my neighbor. I'd use Standard Water again but do be sure to watch them.
Description of Work: 34 feet of a basement was waterproofed in a side by side duplex - 17 feet on each side. The duplex is into a hill so we only needed one side of the basement waterproofed.

My experience with them was really good. I was pleased with the price. They had a great warranty which always helps. They were great about keeping appointments and staying on schedule.
Description of Work: They came and waterproofed my basement. They put in a drainage tile system.
We had a small amount of water constantly seeping in the basement for the last couple years. Called this company and they came out and looked at it. I also wanted new windows. He gave me the estimate and scheduled the job for the next week. Since I was getting windows and the drain tile system, it was scheduled for 3 days. 2 days for the drain tile system and 1 day for the egress window. The crew called each morning before they came. We have 2 small dogs and they were real good about closing the gate so we didn't lose them. Both the basement and yard were spotlessly clean when they left, you could not tell such a big job was done, only but the wonderful work they left behind. They completely finished the drain tile job by 4:30 the second day, including cleaning up, and 48 hours later the basement was completely dry and the musty smell was gone. I am so glad I did this job and that Standard Water Control did it for me. A bunch of extremely hard working guys.

The estimator was honest with the fact that my home could very well do without their system. I live in a low water table area with very sandy soil. He said I could continue working on solutions outside the home for much less money. He said with their system the water would likely be directed under the slab and rarely make it into the sump, that the sump pump would rarely run. I'm finishing the basement and needed extra "insurance", so went ahead anyways. Their first crew completed the first phase in one day as expected. They were very respectful and answered any questions I had. The foreman saw where I had dug a hole outside for an egress window, saw that I had the same Bilco well that Standard Water uses, and even went so far as to give me advice on installing the egress window which I was doing myself the following weekend. This despite the fact that they sell egress window installations. I was asked if they could put up the vapor barrier in a section and take pictures for their brochures. The crew then put the moisture barrier up in almost the entire basement, which meant removing several fasteners and other things from the block wall, before realizing I hadn't bought the vapor barrier and then didn't need to do it. I was then offered half off to leave it up and finish. I took them up on the offer and am completely satisfied even though it put the total above the estimate. The concrete crew also completed their part as advertised and again were helpful in answering any questions I had. Overall I'd hire Standard Water again if I had to do it over.
Description of Work: Installed roughly 80 feet of drain tile, new sump, new sump pump, and about 80x7 feet of diamond moisture/vapor barrier against block. The estimate was right on, but the overall charges were higher because I agreed to add the moisture barrier (more on that later). The waterproofing included the original basement. I have a sub-basement that is the result of an addition and the sub-basement includes drain tile for an exterior drain system. The original block separates the two sides. I was resigned to having a second sump as part of the interior waterproofing. Standard Water proposed a solution to tunnel under the old footings to tie the new interior drain system on the one side into the exterior drain system on the other side. This meant I had a single pump and was a very good solution. I received half off the price for the vapor barrier which was an offer I couldn't refuse.

Showed up a couple hours late. Whatever was in their wheelbarrow that they cleaned out in our front yard killed a patch of grass. Also, the basement was filthy when they were done. But they did smash our old laundry tub and got rid of it - which was nice of them. They weren't great - but they did the job. Not sure if we would use them again.

I received several bids and thought that they had the most professional presentation. I was also drawn to the awards that they had received. But the experience did not go well. They cut out a large hole in one of the walls in my basement without making me aware of the operation. They left the basement very unclean. When I called the manager of the company, he would only offer me $25 to repair the hole in the wall. He was very rude and patronizing. I now have to completely redo the walls in the basement because they no longer have the kind of paneling that was on the wall.
Description of Work: They installed a partial perimeter sump pump and drain tile in my basement after my basement flooded.
