We were told by 3 different window companies that we needed all new windows but that seemed excessive when it was really small amounts of rot on the exterior brick mold mostly corners; the windows worked fine. SP Custom Carpentry came out and reassured us that they could replace the wood and recaulk and paint and the windows would be fine. They cut and fit the wood on site and painted the next day. There was a difference between the estimate and the bill which was basically because we left it opened ended for them to repair anything that needed it. They found one upper window that upon closer inspection did need new mold so they added that. I had asked about it for clarification and Sy offered to cover that cost because it wasn't in the original estimate and he wanted to be fair. He was very respectful and courteous. I paid the full amount because they did do the work and I really appreciated his gesture of good will. Windows look great and instead of paying $38K for new windows we paid 1/6th of that!
Description of Work: Replaced all the rotted brick mold and two entirely rotten sills on windows in our home.

First had them, out on recommendation from roofing crew that would not do trim repair job. Needed to fix rotting trim that squirrel had crewed open hole to attic. Not only did they fix but they went to battle with the squirrel to get it out of the attic before repair done. Did this without being asked and did not charge extra. Trim match was great. They even repainted to match when carpentry done. Estimates always done quickly and very reasonable price. These are the only guys I will ever use.
Description of Work: Replaced old windows with high efficiency windows under MAC program and did such a great job had them back to do more trim and window replacement work on my 95 yr old home.
Great - they showed up on time, finished the work within the time expected, and on budget. Everything was done very professionally.
Description of Work: Built custom screens to fit over arched doorways, to fit historical french doors. Also repaired two rotted windows and sills.

I asked Sly to come out to do some carpentry work, repairing some dry rot on my house. He walked the premise with me, jotted down dome information, told me he was backed up with work, but he would get me an estimate in about 4-5 days. After a week, I followed up with a phone call to him, he apologized for the delay and said he would have an estimate in a day or so. He never called back nor sent an estimate along. I understand if he is very busy, perhaps too busy to take on my project, but would expect him to at least tell me that he won't take the job. I give him a C over all as he seemed nice and clearly was very knowledgeable about his work and what needed to be done. He get's an F for clearly not being responsive and a D for professionalism as he seemed more interesting in what I paid for my house than in getting the work done.
Description of Work: Nothing. He came out, took a look at the job, promised an estimate and then never called or sent an estimate along.

I met Sy when he gave a talk to the community education program about maintaining and preserving old windows. I could tell he cared about old windows, and knew he was the man I wanted when it cam time to restore ours. Sy himself came and measured and gave an estimate. During the next 3 weeks, his team did prep work in the shop. Then the crew (which included Sy's brother-in-law and son) showed up exactly on time. The were very respectful of our home, taking their shoes off on the front porch and covering all the floors with tarps and the furniture with painter's plastic, carefully removing window shades. They quickly removed the original windows, then part of the team took them back to their shop to place the new jamb liners while the rest of the team continued to prepare the window jambs. Once the windows with new jamb liners came back from the shop, they went into place quickly. We now have the look of the original windows with the benefits of modern windows.
Description of Work: Sy and his team refurbished windows from our 1922 home. These windows had cold drafts from the sides during the winter. Sy's team removed the original windows; packed the pockets (where the pulleys hang) with insulation; put new aluminum liners with tilt-out mechanisms and better insulation around the original windows; then replaced the windows and the original trim. So it is still the original glass and panes and trim; but modern mechanisms and insulation.

I live in a home built in 1920. This home has character. However, some previous owners had replaced the original wood windows with hideous vinyl windows, which diminished its character. When I bought the home, I knew the windows would need to be restored to original solid wood, true divided light windows, meaning that each pane of glass is actually separated by a wood muntin bar (i.e., no cheating with the ridiculous looking paste-on grilles you see on new windows). My windows were originally 3-over-1, meaning there is 3 panes of glass on top, and one pane on bottom. I called Sy, and he immediately set up a time to come out to look at my home and windows. That first time and every time after Sy was very flexible as far as scheduling a time to come out to my house. I told Sy that I wanted him to create historically authentic wood windows and that I wanted them to be placed on the original rope and pulley system. Most of Sy's customers probably don't care to keep the rope and pulley system (I don't know why, they work great!), but Sy was very nice and agreed to help me accomplish that goal. Sy's crew came and removed 10 vinyl windows and replaced them with 100% historically accurate wood windows with true divided lights. He also placed the windows on the rope and pulley system on salvaged pulleys which he located for me. I can say without a doubt, that these windows are EXACTLY like the ones which were removed from the home. They are 100% historically perfect replacements, and I could not be happier with SP Custom Carpentry's attention to detail and craftsmanship. Sy's sister also worked hard to stain the windows and match them to the rest of my trim in my home. Sy also made for me his patented wood combination storm windows with an aluminum glass and screen insert. These let you open and close the glass on the storm window like the aluminum storm windows you see out there. However, these are much better because they LOOK like the historical wood storm windows, meaning they look millions of times better than the aluminum storm windows (which are the ugliest invention of the past 50 years if you ask me). If your home still has its old wood windows, I absolutely recommend that you try to fix and restore those first (those old windows can last forever). However, if your windows are truly beyond repair, or it you don't have wood windows currently, use SP Custom Carpentry. It will make your home look more beautiful, cozier, and truer to its historical heritage. I will certainly be using SP Custom Carpentry to replace the remaining 10 vinyl windows in my home next year.
Description of Work: SP Custom Carpentry removed my old vinyl windows and replaced them with historically accurate, solid wood windows and wood storm windows with aluminum inserts for the screens.

Description of Work: I have an older house with original windows on the front of the house. The outside storm windows were in bad shape and the screen windows had been thrown away by the previous owner. The company fabricated new combination storm / screen windows.

The entire experience was positive from the visit for the estimate until our final satisfaction was determined. Sy, the owner, showed up on time for the estimate. He gave a verbal price for the work to be done with the intent to send a written estimate, which he later did. At first I thought the price seemed a bit high. Sy did NOT push at all. He recommend we see a sample of his work at CEE (Center for Energy Excellence) in Richfield. We took a look and compared to the other reconditioning method. Sy's was, to us, a more superior system. The price seemed reasonable when we could see what the end product would be. The crew showed on time and was professional and completed in the one day Sy estimated it would take. In the morning, they removed the windows and took them back to their shop. Later in the day they returned and re-installed them. We had a couple of concerns and contacted SP. Within minutes, we heard back and arrangements were made for them to come back and address them. The resolutions were quick and and completed with professionalism. One of the fixes was the frosted glass in one bathroom window of the sash appeared to be inconsistent. They suggested we allow a few days after the and quot;fixand quot; to see if we were satisfied. If not, they would take care of it. We decided we did not care of the and quot;fix.and quot; They immediately offered another solution tp replace the glass with a different new glass (rather than continue with the original with the frost added). We are very happy with the solution. All resolutions were done at no charge to us. The windows now work much better than when we bought the house. And we have the functionality of new windows with the original windows at a cheaper price than replacing them. It was obvious to us that Sy takes great pride in the work his company does and wants the customer to be satisfied. We have already recommended them to other people.
Description of Work: 12 double hung windows reconditioned for a mid 1950's house. The sashes were retained. The frames were replaced, so that the windows slide and close properly. Additionally, the sashes can tilt and come out for easy cleaning and painting or staining them. Since the windows are the original windows to the house the look like they should for the home and still have the quality oak construction. We also had the bottom sash for the bathroom window frosted for my privacy. Sy also offered to replace the combination windows for the two windows on either side of the picture window at no charge. The ones there were not the proper ones and he said it would look better. The replacement ones did look better.

Love, love, love SP Windows. They rocked this job and were the perfect fit for my complicated project. Mike first gave me an estimate on the window part of this job a year ago. I called him back out this year and we revised the estimate (several times) to meet our needs. Sy came out for the measure and to identify the rotted wood and he did a great job. I appreciated his help in making decisions about the types of windows and storms that would be best for my old home and was confident about his knowledge which is important in honoring the homes architecture. We have 42 windows in our home and new high-quality storms were not a cheap venture. We finally decided on wood storms for the front of the house and aluminum for the rest of the house in an effort to balance cost and maintenance. Honestly the aluminum storms look so fantastic we could have used them everywhere but I do love the wood as well. When installation time came a all star team came out and installed all the windows efficiently in one day. Then they came back to install the new beautiful orange wood storm door, refurbished window with a privacy liner, window for my basement and repair of the sashes. Everyone who came out was a pleasure to have here and provided really high quality work. Small issues arose as one would expect on a job this size with so much going on and my house being so old. SP Windows was super responsive and all over my requests. They went above and beyond in providing an excellent customer service experience and I highly recommend them for window projects in historical homes. I'm only sorry I don't have any more windows to have them replace!
Description of Work: SP Windows replaced all my rotted old original wood storm windows with historical but efficient replacements in both wood and aluminum. Some of the surrounding wood was rotted and they replaced that for me as well. They also custom made a new wood front store for me, refurbished my bathroom window and added a privacy liner and built and installed a new window and storm in the basement. Finally, they also replaced a couple broken sashes.

Description of Work: SP Custom Carpentry did a major job at our house few years back and came again about five months ago to do widow repair. Our window was stuck, so they have to break the glass, repair the damaged wood frame, replace the glass and repaired the screen. Those services were free of charge.

Sy (the owner) came to do the estimate. He was punctual, courteous and professional. Plus he was friendly with our small child and pets. He clearly knows and loves old houses and original windows, which is important to me. His team was the same; very careful and thorough. The work went quickly and they left no trace that they had been here. They even came back to reinstall our Roman shades, which they hadn't done initially so that the stain (blended to match our custom stain) could dry. I've dealt with two other firms in this space (reconditioning windows) and they are by far the most professional, neat/tidy, friendly and produce the best results. When I dealt with the team via phone or email to schedule the second batch of work, they were responsive and timely, which can be rare in a service firm.
Description of Work: SP Custom Carpentry & Windows reconditioned several windows and installed storm windows for a few of those that had been reconditioned. We have a 1924 home with original windows, many of which wouldn't open or if they did, wouldn't stay open. SP installed their proprietary technology and now the windows all open in multiple ways, without the ugly vinyl liners I had with a previous company in a prior home. The storm windows blend in perfectly with some of the original storms we still have.

We had a tornado hit our home in Minneapolis last spring and were overwhelmed with the work as we had decided to do our own contracting. We needed many windows replaced, the sills were rotten, and the storms were damaged. Sy advised us not to upgrade the windows but that he and his crew could in fact repair the damaged wood. And he did! They also build us a custom made door that was fantastic and beautiful. Great value for the price!
Description of Work: Sy and his crew were amazing! Sy gave honest advice even if it meant we would spend less with him. We had more than 10 different companies give us recommendations and quotes, but he was the first who gave such great advice and help. His crew was fast and did quality work!

SP Custom Carpentry and Windows gave us a quote for their custom combination windows via email and the internet. Once we accepted their bid, they came out to measure our windows and to pick up our window paint. They then custom manufactured the windows and returned about a month later to install the windows. The windows were pre-painted with our paint, and were installed by their service people. The windows edges were tweaked on site to fit the exact space needed, which was necessary on a couple of windows . The windows match our old storms perfectly and we are very pleased.
Description of Work: We purchased five custom storm/screen combination windows that matched the look of our old storm windows to maintain the look of our 1939 house. The windows have a sliding combination window inside a wood frame, which eliminates switching between storm and screen windows each season. The windows match the look of our old storms, but have all the modern conveniences of combination windows.

From my initial phone inquiry to installation, I was very impressed with SP Windows. The man who answered the phone was helpful and polite. Sy himself came out to measure the windows (and mentioned at least three of my neighbors for whom he had done work), they sent me an estimate right away, and were out to install the windows as soon as the weather warmed up. The installation crew was efficient, professional, and courteous. My only disappointment was an error of my own: had I been asked, I would have chosen a different color for the storm windows. But they didn't ask me, I forgot to tell them, and I probably didn't read the estimate thoroughly enough to understand what color I was getting. I just wanted the chirping birds to go away! Next time I work with them (and I'm sure I will), I will be sure to specify all of the details.
Description of Work: My three kitchen windows were in such terrible shape that birds were beginning to nest within holes in the sills. SP Windows replaced the wooden sills, wooden casings around the windows and built three new aluminum combo storm/screen windows to replace the original wooden storms. They also replaced our side door sill.

Perfect, start to finish! Sy is incredibly professional and patient. His crew is pleasant to work with, and extremely thorough. Sy came to show us our storm window choices and make recommendations for what would work on our 120+ year old home. He measured each window (16 of them), including where the breaks should be so that they would match the existing double-hung windows. The storms were ready when he said they would be, and were hung when he said they would be. One of his crew noticed that one of the windows was slightly off, and so took it back to be redone, which really impressed me - I never would have known that the window was off, if he hadn't told me. The new storm windows were done just in time for the cold weather, and I no longer feel the wind blowing in through my 120+ year-old windows, so I know the job was done correctly. As a bonus, Sy even told me what I should do about refinishing the only original storms left, on the front of the house, which I did not want to replace. What a fantastic experience!

Description of Work: Replaced three 100 year old storm windows with custom wood and aluminum storm windows. These are the ones that look from the outside like old wooden storms, but are aluminum on the inside and do not need changing twice a year. Installed custom wood jam and restored wood andsashes for three single hung leaded glass windows. Sy did a great job of matching the stain to the heavy patina on the window frames. Custom built three windows and storms for attic dormers.

Great experience, Sy was very personable and professional. I didn't feel like I was being taken advantage of or tried to sell something I didn't want. I was concerned about keeping the integrity of the style of our 1912 home and didn't want to settle on aluminum windows to replace what we had. All of our new windows fit perfectly, they were each made and custom to fit the individual space. Sy threw in 3 piano window replacements for free. I now have had 2 final storms to replace and called Sy to do it, no questions asked.
Description of Work: Replaced 18 old storm windows and screens with custom made wood framed combination windows.
