 + -1 moreI had won a gold coin several years ago in a contest and with gold prices so high, I decided now would be a good time to sell. However, it turns out it's harder than you might think to get a good price for your gold. I looked into the gold buying services, then contacted a jewelry store (offering a "50% bonus" for one weekend--they offered me about $600 for the coin). I kept searching and finally found American Rare Coin. Their website has all the current info, including buy prices (hard to pin most companies down on this) and they responded same-day when I emailed them a question. I went in to see them on a Saturday morning. They examined the coin and offered me over $900 for it (basically, about $15 less than the spot gold price). I accepted, they photocopied my license and cut me a check. In and out in about half an hour. They were friendly, low-pressure, and honest. I highly recommend them.

 + -1 moreAfter searching on the Internet and not having much luck, I turned to Angie's list looking for a coin dealer. I really liked American Rare Coin's web site. They were very up front with prices and what would be considered special coins. I sent them an email with some examples of what I had (proof sets and misc coins from the early 1900's) and they said to just stop by any time. That was probably a mistake. They seem to do better if you make an appointment. The person who helped me was not the most knowledgeable, but he did ask for help when he couldn't answer a question. The experts seemed to all be busy with other customers. Next time I would make an appointment.
Description of Work: My father had a few bags of miscellaneous coins that he told me to sell.
