See above. On 9/11/13 I had a DTE technician out to the home to perform an inspection on the furnace. I refused to tell said technician what FLAME claimed to find. Based on the above overall dissatisfaction I was not surprised to learn that DTE found absolutely nothing wrong with the equipment and certified to such in writing. the whole scenario makes me wonder about the repairs made to my AC.
Description of Work: Inspect my AC. My original installer was Kopke who was stellar and highly rated by DTE. Apparently FLAME bought Kopke. The repairman was, in my opinion, unscrupulous. I am an unemployed widow who made a point of telling him that after my husband's death I purchased the Ultimate Home Protection Plan through DTE that covers all my appliances, furnace and AC. He continued to inspect, replace 2 parts, sold me their Gold Plus plan, inspected by furnace, told me my heat exchanger was cracked and I should just replace both units due to their age 17 yrs. I paid approximately $200 for parts and $100 for their Gold Plus Plan, ALL OF WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER MY DTE PLAN FULLY, NOT PARTIALLY. I am convinced this man knew what he was doing. I will burn my furniture for heat before I ever let them into my home again. An honest technician would have told me I had made a mistake calling them and charge me only for the call and not do any repairs. I'm sure he was betting I wouldn't catch on. In less than 3 hours I called the office to cancel the service plan. We will see if they do.

[Member name removed], Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry you were not happy with our service. It is customers like you that keep us informed so we understand and know where we need to improve service and communication. It is our practice to recommend customers call DTE if they have a plan with DTE. We do not encourage our Technicians to do work if the customer can get the same service done at no charge. We regret you did not take us up on our offer to come out to your home and meet the DTE service representative to show him the faulty Heat Ex changer. It is our policy to send the Service Manager and the Service Tech out if there are any questions regarding our diagnosis. We will do a complete diagnosis in front of the DTE service representative at no charge. We have also canceled your Gold Plan and refunded $149 to your account . We want to insure you are not charged any Gold Plan payments. Please call us so we can make sure you are refunded properly. 586-582-8707. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. We are sorry for the misunderstanding.

The story is above -- no further words are needed.
Description of Work: This experience was a VERY mixed bag -- that's the problem. The following relates about 3 years of history -- please read it all. Our furnace had major "issues" between Christmas and New Years. We called Flame, they responded quickly and told us the old furnace wasn't worth repairing (it WAS old). So we went with a whole new system -- heat and AC. Flame worked very diligently to get the new furnace installed -- even providing heaters to help keep the house warm. To this point all is well -- in fact very well. Fast forward roughly 18 months. AC isn't functioning well -- temp is several degrees above setting. Called Flame and, after some run-around, they sent out a serviceman. He decided the coil in the furnace was leaking and needed to be replaced. A day or so later a second (different) service person came out to install the replacement (all under warranty). Thought all was well -- but NO. Cooling wasn't working properly. Flame sent out another service person (different AGAIN). He found the coil that had been installed was wrong -- WAY undersized for the system and allowed about 50% of the air to bypass entirely. He did a great job of patching temporarily so the system cooled. He also ordered another coil to be installed in a few days. Serviceman #4 (yes, different again) came out and installed the second replacement. He was one of the people that worked on the original installation and did a great job (the furnace room is a tight space). The schmuck who installed the wrong first replacement had done a really amateurish job fitting in the bad coil -- it looked terrible. At this point I don't recall exactly why, but a 5th service visit was required ( the service person was -- "none of the above". I like to know what's going on with the systems in my house, so I pay pretty close attention to what the service people are doing. For some reason, Flame doesn't seem to have a way of passing info from one service person to another, so each time a new guy came I had to relate what had gone on to that point. That's ridiculous!!! At the end of this mess I contacted the owner of Flame. His initial position was "well, we're all done" -- no thought of trying to compensate us somehow for all the time and trouble caused. I argued, and we settled on a year of free Gold Plan. I've made it very clear that the #2 service guy is never to set foot on this property again -- he's incompetent and a liar. But so far as I know, he wasn't fired. If you call Flame, will #2 be the person that comes to your home, or will it be one of the "good guys"? They all wear the same uniform and drive a Flame truck. When our warranty expires on the furnace, we're planning on finding a new HVAC provider.

Never received a quoted price after repeated calls to their company, never returned my calls when I left voicemails.
Description of Work: I called to get an estimate on some new lighting in my kitchen and have my outside AC unit moved. Salesman came out on a Saturday and was only there about 5 minutes, seemed rushed and didn't take much time to ask me details about the job. He asked if it would be ok if he called me on Monday with quote, I said fine. About a week later, I still hadn't heard anything so I called to follow up. The girl who answered put me through to a voicemail, I left a message and never heard back from anyone. After not calling me when he said he would and not returning my followup call, I decided not to pursue it anymore. A month after the original guy was out, I got a voicemail (while I was at work or I would have answered my phone) that they were following up on the quote they gave me and wanted to know if I was still interested in having the work done. What quote?!? I never got the price! I called them right back and was put through...to another voicemail. I left another message and never got a call back. I was surprised to get such poor customer service from them when they have such high ratings.

The electronic igniter was not functioning at 100%, and there was a crack in the heat exchanger. The furnace went out on one of the coldest days, of course. A service tech was out the same day to assess the problems. A salesman came next. He very thoroughly explained our options, made recommendations, explained all necessary steps, i.e., pulling permits, sending forms for qualified utility rebates, and additionally explained Flame Furnace gold plan for future service, etc. The install was done on schedule, taking almost 6 hours. Each of the service men were polite, professional, and clearly competent answering each and every question so even I could understand! From the first phone call, everyone was absolutely professional, efficient, and timely. All is working well, and hopefully will continue to do so for a very long time. FYI: Subtract $500 in rebates from the utility companies from the total cost for our out-of-pocket charge.
Description of Work: Replaced 16 year-old furnace with new energy efficient furnace. Replaced/upgraded old breaker, valves, pipes, liners, chimney top, etc., with new up-to-code materials. Restarted (has not run in a long time) humidifier. Installed programmable thermostat. Once done, removed all old materials and cleaned basement floor.

I spent about $90 on that service. I have had them for a long time and they installed the furnace in the house in the first place. I used them for the furnace about 12 years ago and I think that the only reason my furnace was this high this month was because the part of the program was the consumers rebate. They also did a little bit extra work on it than the normal tune-up. The quality of their service was fine. The gentleman I spoke to was fine.

During the check of the outdoor unit of my air conditioning equipment, the serviceman indicated a part had to be replaced or the unit was in danger of ceasing to operate. He replaced the part at a cost to me of $313, over and above the annual fee I had paid for the Gold Plan (semi-annual checks on my heating and air conditioning equipment). At the urging of a friend who thought I was vastly overcharged, I checked the Internet and found the replacement part at several sites with prices ranging from $85 to $125. I faxed an inquiry to Flame asking why I was charged $313 for a part that was available for considerably less. I stated I expected them to make a profit, but thought this incident was totally unreasonable. I never got an answer to my inquiry. When a serviceman came in the fall to check my heating unit under the still-existing pre-paid Gold Plan, I mentioned my experience with the company, especially not getting an answer to my inquiry, and I was assured someone would call me with an explanation. The call never came. Earlier this year I received a letter asking me to renew my Gold Plan at a cost of around $300. The payment plans described in the letter did not make sense to me, so I called the number given in the letter for clarification and left a phone message. The call was never returned. It is obvious to me the company has no interest in taking care of customers, even if they are customers of long standing.

I had signed up for the gold plan yearly services (routine checkups). I discovered water at the base of the unit in the basement. Upon inspection, this kid couldn't find the source either. After moving hoses, I found a pinhole in a plastic tube spraying water. The kid, (I mean technician) didn't have any of that type hose. I showed him we could just cut what I had and he did it in about 30 seconds. I found the leak and the solution and besides my yearly fees already paid, I had to pay for this knucklehead. Also as a gold member, I didn't feel I got my money's worth. Always tried selling something more.

My big clumsy Golden Retriever loved their company and followed them around up and down the stairs to the basement, outside and back in and together they were able to efficiently and effectively replace the unit. The guys are great and clearly know what they're doing. They were wonderful with my dog and invited his company. My AC is functioning just as it should. I know I can count on this company to arrive professionally and I know from the phone call they make prior that they're on their way and who is coming. In 2003 we had to replace our furnace. They also give helpful and good advice and we know we were always working with the right company.
Description of Work: I've used their services for years. Recently I had to hire them to replace my 21 year old air conditioning unit. There was no repairing it this time.

AC had blown both the breaker and the fuses. I had replaced the fuses and measured that I had voltage at the compressor, but it would not turn on. It was a Saturday, and I had company coming soon, so I called Flame. They had a technician arrive within an hour, and he quickly helped me diagnose the issue (corrosion in the outside local disconnect). I was able to complete the repair myself with $10 of additional parts from Home Depot. The service charge was $108 because it was a Saturday (and an extremely hot day, of course.), but it was worth every dollar to me.
Description of Work: AC would not run, even though fuses and circuit breaker replaced and OK. Flame performed a diagnostic technician call on a Saturday.

I paid $98 for the service call and $49 for a new filter. However, their technician informed me that it would cost alot of money to repair, over $2,000. Their salesman arrived shortly after and confirmed the repair costs. He then informed me that it would cost (with discounts), $4,539 for a new air conditioner package. He could offer it for a few days at that price. I said I would get another estimate from another company before I decided. The other company offered me a comparable air conditioner package for $2,695, but suggested that I have one of their technicians come out to see if my unit could be repaired at a reasonable cost. Their technician arrived, cleaned it, and filled it with 8 lbs of puron. My 6 year old air conditioner has been working efficiently ever since. Their service call was $89.95 and with the puron the total was $201. I will never use Flame Heating & Cooling again.

Very professional and I was happy that they found a leaking pipe that was costing me money that I did not even know about. Pleased overall.
Description of Work: Hot day so of course the A/C goes off. FLAME was there within two hours and was able to fix the A/C quickly. Serviceman noticed a leaking pipe going to my sprinklers outside by the unit. Called back to the office and had a plumber come out 45 minutes later. I was not even aware of this until he showed up and told me about the problem and how I was losing water outside. Fixed the pipes and I was very pleased.

Called Flame Furnace in August 2010 because there was water in the bottom of my HVAC closet, they came out the next morning first thing and said that there was no problem with the furnace ($90 for that call). Called them back in October 2010 because the heat would not come on, they had to clean out something (I cannot remember) and were there for less than an hour and charged me over $300. I felt scammed.

However, in fairness to the rep who came out, he was very knowledgeable, professional and extremely competent and answered my email inquiry about his high bid. I chose not to use them.
Description of Work: A Flame rep came out to quote replacement of our old furnace (circa 1970's) with a new Bryant 95% efficient furnace, whole home humidifier, air cleaner, central air and programmable thermostat. They also quoted installation of all new ductwork since the old ductwork was asbestos wrapped. The quote did not include removal of the old ductwork since my husband was removing it. I had 4 quotes on this job, with the lowest bid of $6,550. Flame's quote came in at $10,993, over $4,000 more than the lowest quote. My house is a 1950's brick bungalow with 900 square feet. I just felt that their bid was excessively high.
