Richards & Swift Roofing

Called on a Monday morning. Returned call promptly and was able to come out for an estimate that day. Quote was a little less than other companies but not enough to decide on price alone. Came with copies of insurance paperwork, certificates, and provided contact information of previous jobs as references. Was able to schedule work for next day. Work was done as stated. Landscaping untouched, thorough clean up. Only negative (reason for B score on professionalism) was crew that came out was not from Richards. I didn't realize Richards would subcontract. After talking to Richards, sounds like they do just the Roofing aspects. The other crew handles their siding/trim/gutter work for smaller jobs. Not a problem with me, just would have been nice to know up front. The crew that did come out was polite and professional.

Wonderful. I called this morning and they answered the phone right away. He came out within 1 1/2 hours to look at my roof and gutters and to give me an estimate. I gave my approval right away as I was having water leaking into my kitchen from the water backing up from the ice dams. He had a 2-man team come over within 2 hours. They did a terrific job and were finished in less than 2 hours. The guys were very hard working and professional. I thought the price was high, but compared to having drywall redone, it's relative.

After a summer storm left minor roof damage I had a couple of contractors out. All said my roof was shot, having nothing to do with the damage from the branches. Richard's Roofing gave me a professional and reasonably priced quote, and they started the job within 3 days, ahead of the next storm. What I liked the best was that a supervisor was on the job the duration of the job. He was walking around the house, watching the workers and giving constant direction. They pointed out a problem with my chimney flashing that was causing damage to the brick, something I could never figure out. They made the repair at very little extra cost - I am very grateful to have solved this damage problem. They cleaned up very well and followed up with me after the job was complete. I would be happy to recommend them to anyone.

The company that did the work was very good. Richards' was friendly. I was not aware that a subcontractor would be coming out to do the work. The gutters were well done. I feel that the price may have been a little high probably because he subcontracted the work. They only replaced about half of the gutters, and the work was done well.

It went very well. They were very efficient, cleaned up any mess they made and were on time. It took about two days to finish the job. It was easy to get a hold of them.

They did a great job and they were prompt. They were done when they said they would be done. They fixed my roof very nicely. I would hire again.

They did a very good job. I would definitely use them again. The people were very friendly & easy to talk to. My only problem was they forgot their dumpster in front of my house, but I called them & they came & took care of it without any arguments or questions.

Everything went pretty well. It is difficult to evaluate the quality of a roof immediately after it is done, but it is not leaking. Of the companies with the highest satisfaction ratings, they were the most reasonably priced. They did a good job on the roof, but they were a little lacking in the clean-up. I would hire them again in the future.

Great -- Quick response -- Quick quote -- Quick scheduling. Very accommdative. Crew arrived 5 minutes early for appointment. Fast good quality work. At my request Crew took extra effort to remove existing roof heating wire from gutter sections to be replaced, and put the roof heating wire back into new seamless section -- saving me the trouble of having to re-run the wire through the new gutter. Job looks great. New gutter looks far better than old exposed hanger segmented gutter did. Best of all, no leaks over sidewalk in front of door. Old segmented gutter had leaked on sidewalk since installation 20 years ago & created dangerous ice in winter (and constant need for salt to remove hazard, which got tracked into house). Great job. Great price.

Terrible. I called and spoke with Jim. He told me he could do the job for $75 and would send someone out in the next couple of days. No one showed up. I called back two weeks later and again spoke with Jim. He said he would have someone out next week and will call to schedule the time. Jim never called back and no one ever showed up !!! I would never use them for actual work after this experience.

It's been over two weeks and I haven't heard from them.

Someone came and gave me an estimate 20 minutes after I called. He did not try to sell me a complete soffit job but concentrated on the problem I presented. The work was completed 2 days later.

They were very prompt and showed up exactly when they said. They were quick in responding back to me. When they looked at my roof and saw it was a quick fix they fixed it and didn't charge me anything!

Our roof had repeated leak problems less than a year after installation. We could not get the installing contractor to repair it, even though they gave a 20 year warranty. Richards came out immediately when we called, fixed the problem at a reasonable price and thoroughly evaluated the rest of the roof. Very professional. We wish we had called Richards last year to install the roof.

I called Mr. Richards after having had water come in my house and run down the wall during a rainstorm. I originally called another company from another listing service. That man said that there was extensive damage in my valley on the roof and it would require $900 to repair. I didn't have $900 and didn't feel good about the diagnosis, so I went to Angie's list and called the Richards Co. Mr. Richards came out, looked at the roof, the gutters, etc. He said he didn't see any damage to the roof or valley. He said that the gutter in that area was very full of leaves and debris and that the water probably overflowed onto the roof and found its way into the house that way and that if I kept the gutters clean I wouldn't have that problem. I have kept the gutters clean since then and never had a repeat of the problem. This man could have bilked me out of money to fix a non-existent problem (as the previous guy tried to do), but instead he was honest and helpful. He also refused to accept any money for the trip and diagnosis. What a gem!! I would definitely have him come out if I needed any work done as he is so honest and was also very pleasant.

This company sent a representative at the time they scheduled (one other company didn't show up. He was very informative about his company and the work that needed to be done. A lot of time was spent answering my questions and he never seemed rushed or anxious to leave. The job was scheduled for the following week. They came on time and immediately started working. They kept at the job even though the weather was extremely hot. The next day there was a thunderstorm in the afternoon, but they covered up and continued after the rain was over. The clean-up was excellent. The coupon from Angie's List and a senior discount were given without question, even though I had forgotten to mention the coupon until I was writing the check. I highly recommend this company.

I checked ratings on Richards Roofing on Angie's List. I'm glad I did because the older reports showed excellent ratings; however, more recent ones were not so good, including not returning phone calls, etc. Red flags went up. I decided to bypass them and get another estimate.

Because we were out of state for a few weeks, he agreed to schedule as soon as we got back. He kept us well informed about a couple day delay because of rain, and showed up with a full crew on the scheduled day. His crew carefully covered all landscaping, and worked like beavers all day, finishing by 4pm in very hot weather. They did everything that was promised. Jim, the rep, and Dale, the owner of the company, were present several times during the day. They offered us an option we accepted that modified our original plan somewhat, because the original proposal wouldn't look as good. Jim even installed gratis a piece of hunter green downspout to replace an unsightly piece of flexible downspout that was white (while the other gutters and downspouts are all hunter green). At the end of the day, everything was cleaned up nicely. The only concern was marks from the torn-off shingles on our vinyl siding when thrown down from the roof. My wife spent more than an hour cleaning off the marks on the front of the house. The crew cleaned marks on the side of the house; unfortunately they used a cleaner that left a large blotch on the siding that looks unsightly when driving into the back. Everyone (crew and management) was very polite, knowledgeable, and hard-working. I highly recommend this company. We even got a bonus when Angie's List magazine arrived a few days before the work was done, and had a coupon reducing the cost by $100. This was deducted from our balance with no questions asked. We know they did not inflate the cost and then give us a phony 'discount.'

We called Richards Roofing and set an appointment to have some gutters added to our home. Our appointment was for 6/26 and no one came to our home or called to cancel. I called and left a message with Jim 2 times after that and we did not receive any calls back. The alternate phone number had the same recording and was of no help. We would NOT recommend this company.

Originally, I thought it went well. However, things showed up later. Cleanup was poor -- I found lots of refuse in the yard, including cigarette butts, many nails (including strips of new nails that apparently fell off their guns), pieces of old shingles, pop rivets, etc. Some landscaping was damaged. When I later insulated my attic and looked at the ridge vent they put in, they did not cut it with a circular saw but apparently hacked at the roof peak with claw hammers. I had gutter leaks, a job that they subbed out even though they state they do not use subcontractors -- I called Richards a couple months later and they never came out to correct it. I don't believe the gutters were sealed as they should have been. When the ridge vents were added I asked if they would block the gable vents as is recommended. They said yes. They never entered my attic, so I wondered how they blocked them from the inside. Jim said they would reach through the ridge vent cuts to install baffles. When I later insulated the attic I found that they did absolutely nothing to block the vents. I also question the efficiency of the soffit vents they installed. I don't think they know anything about proper attic ventilation or care. I had provided a primed piece of wood for a soffit fascia on the rear of my garage. I found later that they installed it with the painted side facing into the garage. I had to dismantle the gutters, pull them back and paint the raw outward facing side myself. I don't have my roof re-done every year, so I don't have a lot of experience with this. However, I think their quality of work was poor. Maybe all roofers are poor in this regard. I feel cheated to some extent.

This company underbid others by $1000 or so. In the end, I got exactly what I paid for. The installation was performed as contracted, but the quality was poor. Within 6 months, leaks began to form, clearly from two valleys. Dale Richards came out once to service, and used caulk in the valleys! Serious leaks have occurred for years since. The problem is clear to myself and other contractors: the two valleys need rebuilding. Instead, Richards responded to about 1 out of 4 of my frequent calls. They came to the house a total of three more times, over 9-10 years. They refused to acknowledge the valley problem. They simply tarred under an eave, and blamed the problem on that. The leaks have worsened. I would clearly fault quality of original workmanship; failure to respond to many requests for service; failure to admit and fix the problems adequately; and, subsequently, the causation of underlay damage and interior wall damage. I would never recommend them to anyone.

I found Richards Roofing listed here on Angie's List and am I glad I called them! Jim is the most professional and friendly contractor we've ever hired. I felt very comfortable having him in my house while my husband was not home. He arrived when he said he would and completed the repairs even though it is blistering hot outside! He was very thorough when describing the reason for the leak and made no attempt to take advantage of my lack of roofing knowledge. It's so wonderful to work with an honest contractor in today's troubled economy. I recommend hiring Richards Roofing for all of your roofing needs. You will not be disappointed!

The job went very well. Workers were eager to please and went about their tasks in a professional manner. The property was thoroughly cleaned at completion.

I know it's a busy time, but my roof leak is as important to me as other people's whole roofs. I understand that companies sometimes don't want a small job but if you don't do small repairs, you should not have it listed as a service provided.

Jim, the estimator, came out the very day I called to discuss the project with me. He was very personable, and seemed quite knowledgeable as he told me my options and what they could do. When I called a few days later to accept their proposal, they scheduled the job for early the following week. They showed up at the exact time they said they would, worked hard, and finished about 8 hours later. Jim came out the next morning to do a final cleanup of my yard. The roof looks nice, and I was very happy with their work. Jim also told me about a recently available discount for which I qualified. He took $300 off his original estimate.
