Description of Work: They never reached out to me about my basement project when they were given my contact info from Angie's List.

Response from You Got A Guy Construction LLC
I am sorry you had a poor experience with Angie's List. I have never been the kind of contractor to deny responsibility for "my actions"... Unfortunately, these were not my actions. I do not ask nor do I need Angie's List to set me up with jobs. My company has enough positive reviews for our potential customers to see what kind of company we are. I do my best to keep up with the calls, emails, texts, and Angie's List business center messages that we receive. I wish you would have called me or sent me a direct email instead of posting s negative review about my company. Please feel free to reach out to me at 248-894-3210 and I would be glad to help you and look at your project if it's still available. Thank You

Description of Work: Contacted Terry to come out to quote a mudroom addition. He was responsive in making the appointment and came to look at the job. He promised a quote and pictures of previous work performed, but we received nothing. Left him 2 messages asking for follow up. No response.

Thank You for your review. I do hold myself personally accountable for a lack of communication. This review simply reflects that we are not perfect. I dedicate myself and my team of professionals to completing the projects we ARE hired to complete. Sometimes when we get busy with our current work, 1 out of 25 quotes (on average) are not completed. This is not an excusable practice on my part and I need to take better care in communicating with all potential clients. Even when the answer is simply "The Project is not right for us". I personally look at 150 projects per year and we only have the bandwidth to complete about 1/6th of them. I will file this review as a lesson learned and take better care to respect my potential client's time in the future. I am not promising perfection but I will guarantee improvement!

Description of Work: Terry completed a rough construction for my basement. He was very flexible on the service and made adjustments as the project was in flight. Terry also brought in plumbing and HVAC sub contractors for rough plumbing and mechanical. Terry managed the subs very well and made sure all work was done with the same high degree of quality he expected from his own team. I would highly recommend Terry and I will use him for other jobs in the future.

Terry is a very nice, personable man, and we got along well from the start. He met with us and went over our very involved renovation plans, and was easy to talk to. He always had good answers to our thousands of questions, and always threw in his own ideas and suggestions for improving on what we were trying to do. Terry was receptive to the General Contractor role, and we feel he did a terrific job dealing with all of the pressure that came with our tight time schedule. Terry was always responsive to our calls and emails, keeping us posted sometimes daily on the progress of our multi-facted project. He also worked well with the tradesmen, some of them told me how nice it was to work with such a good general contractor. Terry kept in close contact with the contractors, and made sure their work was right, and done on time. He was very good at working out all of the minor problems that came up during the project. We were very happy with the responsible way in which he handled the bank too. He made sure the paperwork was done right, and he made sure the payments were properly made to all concerned parties. Terry's work in the house was very good too, always cleaning up afterwards. He seems to take pride in his work, and he really cared that we were happy with what he did. Terry made sure to be available for the many inspectionsthat were required. We would highly recommend him to others.
Description of Work: Terry, (You Got A Guy Construction) was hired to be our General Contractor for an extensive remodeling (refurbishing) on an older, fore-closed home we purchased. The work scope included extensive electrical; fully re-plumbing the entire house; installation of forced-air furnace and AC; install new ductwork; property cleanup including demo on storage sheds; soffit repair and gutters; drywall repair, and other general carpentry work. Terry's responsibilities were to oversee the tradesmen and make sure that their work was finished on time and to our satisfaction. Terry also had to deal with the bank and FannieMae to submit much paperwork and receive the payments from the bank for work completed. (Lots of paperwork and red-tape!) Terry was responsible for distributing the payments to the trades as work was completed. Terry also was personally responsible for some of the work to be done. As our General Contractor, Terry was also responsible for seeing that all necessary city permits were taken out and inspections completed and approved.

From start to finish(ed basement), Terry and his team were professional, highly skilled, and focused on quality. During the initial consultation, Terry differentiated himself from the other builders we'd engaged by bringing lots of solid ideas about how we could turn our unfinished space into a highlight of our home: other contractors we spoke to either expected us to have a finalized blueprint of the design we wanted for our basement (down to what kind of lights we wanted) or immediately started putting together a plan for a ultra high-end design, which we neither wanted nor could afford. Terry, on the other hand, came in and listened to the rough ideas we had on layout and overall aesthetic goals, and worked with us to produce a design that we were happy with. It felt like he was partnering with us on the project, as opposed to just building something to spec. This collaborative approach really set Terry above the other builders we spoke with, and his approach continued throughout the span of the project. I felt very comfortable leaving the details of the project in Terry and his team's capable hands, as, after working with him during the first few days of the project, I knew he'd engage me in the important decisions. Perhaps even more important, he was always ready to offer suggestions and guidance based on his experience; as this was my family's first major remodeling project, Terry's experience was invaluable in helping us make good decisions on the project. From helping us decide on making the most of our space, to little things like building a small, attractive box around our electrical panel, Terry and his team brought a lot of great ideas to the table, and, importantly, executed on those ideas at a high-level of quality. This focus on the client extends to Terry's team as well: you could tell that he doesn't take the selection of his skilled tradespeople lightly, as everyone we encountered who performed work on the basement was professional, polite, and produced great work. As an example, he and his team moved a massive meat freezer from our basement before they began work; seriously, this thing was the size of an obese grizzly bear (and probably heavier), and his team moved it out of there without complaint. We couldn't be more happy with the work that Terry and his team performed. He stayed within our budget and delivered a space that is now one of the highlights of our modest home. I'd recommend Terry (and I have, many times since the end of the project) to anyone looking for a skilled, professional builder who will partner with you on your next remodeling project.
Description of Work: Remodeled / finished basement in a 1950s era brick bungalow. Working with Terry was a FANTASTIC experience, and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a trustworthy, hard-working contractor who truly cares about quality, who won't nickel and dime you, and who is on your side. My 750 sq ft basement was totally unfinished and I was looking for someone to handle the entire project for me. I have a very busy day job and simply didn't have the time to play watchdog over the project (and lacked the expertise to do so). What I needed was a champion to handle everything for me. During my search I dealt with a fair share of people who either were looking to over-charge me or who simply weren't trustworthy or dependable. Fortunately I settled on Terry and You Got a Guy Construction. From the very beginning I could tell that he really CARED about doing a good job, and that he took pride in the quality of his work and the quality of his interactions with me. We started with two documents that I had already developed: a floor plan and an interior designer's specifications. Every step of the way he made sure we were on the same page, always incorporated any comments or concerns I had with the work, and made sure all of the contractors coming through were accountable to him for doing a great job. There were a few times when what was being implemented wasn't quite what I had expected. In EVERY case Terry's response was "okay, we'll fix that, no problem." And it wasn't a problem. In fact, one time his painter had painted an accent wall and it turns out I really didn't like the color (not Terry's fault!). He simply had the painter re-do that wall, no complaints, no questions, no over-charging. Over the course of the project he really won my trust, because I felt like he was on my side and not just another contractor looking for a quick buck. Speaking of changes, as with any complex project, there were changes along the way that I wanted to make. Terry was always up front about the cost of my requested changes, and he NEVER tried adding extra charges that we hadn't discussed. His communication was also excellent - we often texted or chatted on the phone as needed, and he was always available. The end result? The process was not stressful (actually, I enjoyed it), and I *LOVE* the results. In this day and age of contractors who don't seem to give a darn about anyone but themselves, it's so refreshing to work with someone who understands customer service, partnership, and quality. Work with this guy and you won't regret it!

I had heard great things about Terry, but he is even better than I had hoped.
Description of Work: Terry is supper to work with. He is very professional, hard working, punctual and does exactly what you want. He is very eager to please. He is the best. I had a very complex remodel that involved relocating the kitchen and laundry and adding a half bath. Terry worked very hard to come up with a great plan that reduced my cost with less tear-up of the existing structures.

Terry was prompt in returning my call and coming out to see what needed to be done. He suggested having one of his contractors (a licensed plumber) come out and do the job. Terry gave me the dimensions of the vanity I needed to buy and the plumber's name and number. The contractor returned my call promptly and did a great job when he came out. He is an experienced plumber who worked carefully, efficiently and competently. The charge for the work was more than reasonable. And just like Terry, he was a nice guy who I felt comfortable having in my home. This is the second time I have used Terry for a relatively small job. I have plans for a more substantial job and will not hesitate to call Terry!

You Got A Guy had great reviews on Angie's List, except one from a woman who said that he told her he would give her an estimate, but never followed up. Terry was initially quite responsive and professional. My husband and I met with him and walked him through the home we are renovating (full renovation). He didn't throw out too many creative ideas, like some of the other contractors we had interviewed, but he was thorough and seemed knowledgable. He ended up being one of two builders we were considering. Six or seven weeks later, we still had no quote and hadn't heard anything from him. I called him (shouldn't it be the other way around?) and asked how the estimate was coming. He said he had several jobs going and was sorry for leaving me hanging, but he'd just been so busy. He said he would call to arange for his trades (plumber, electrician) to contact me for an estimate of their work. No one ever called me back, including Terry. All in all, he's a friendly guy, but made us feel that our job was not important enough to warrant his time. If he's that busy, he should say that he isn't taking on new work, currently.

All is correct in this regard except for the fact that I did attempt to follow up one last time, I was in the area with my plumber And I received no response. This project was one that had been started by another contractor that walked off the job, I did Inform the customers multiple times that I was very busy and may not be able to take on a project as extensive as theirs at That time. I am sorry for any misunderstanding and I hope they found someone to take care of them.

Terry was very professional and extremely considerate. He provided ideas and options for the work, and was genuinely interested in delivering what we wanted. He made sure that we were comfortable with the process and offered regular updates on his progress. The work was completed in a very professional manner, turned out just like we had hoped, and was done ahead of schedule.

Terry is a very nice guy. He is the only contractor who actually answered the phone when I called. It was nice to not have to leave a message. Overall, his price was a bit high for what we wanted done, but I am sure he would've done a great job! He spent a lot of time going over the house and what we wanted to do. He did take about 4 days to get us a quote, but it was over a weekend, so that is understandable. If we had another project to do, I would definitely contact him for a quote.

Terry did a great job and I plan to use him again for larger jobs I need done in the house. It is obvious he knows what he is doing and is experienced. He explained everything to me and most importantly, listened to what I wanted and did not try to sell me a bigger job. He was punctual and worked efficiently and neatly. Terry did everything he said he would and the finished product looks great and obviously was done by a pro.Terry is personable in the way you want someone to be who is working in your home. He is easy going and approachable but when it comes to getting the job done, he is a purposeful and deliberate worker.I cannot think of anything that could have been improved upon. He really is that good!
Description of Work: I was unable to get a couch into my home and needed four (outdated) decorative poles that ran from a four foot wall to the ceiling removed from the vestibule to open up the space. The base holding the poles and the base on the ceiling needed replacement as well.

Terry responded very quickly to my call and his estimate came in quickly. I have to be honest, I didn't get multiple estimates, because we felt so comfortable with him from the start and his references raved about him. One previous customer even invited me over to see his basement if I wanted to. So, we had our basement partially finished and Terry came in and hung our drop ceiling, fixed some other areas that were not getting the drop ceiling, boxed in some ductwork, did a little drywall work to finish things up, did some hvac work, created a nice ledge for us, and did all the trim work throughout the basement. He always did what was in his estimate to completion and worked with us if we had changes or concerns. His team was always on time, professional, cleaned up after themselves, and easy to work with. I will call Terry in the future if I need other work done and will be refer him to others. We may bring him back later in the Spring to do some work for our parents.
Description of Work: Terry and his team hung a drop ceiling in our basement, did some carpentry work on the ceiling, hung a couple small pieces of drywall, put three doors in, created a ledge for us, and installed all the trim.

A new real estate listing hit the market on a Friday, and I was one of the first people to see the house. It was a foreclosure, and the entire first floor had been gutted to the frame, along with most of the garage and a previously finished basement. I knew I was interested in the property but had only guesses as to what it might cost to repair. Unfortunately, multiple parties were interested in the same house, and offers were due the following Monday. Saturday was St. Patrick's Day, but You Got a Guy listed Saturday hours, so I called in the morning. Terry actually came out the following day and spent his Sunday afternoon crawling around that house and crunching numbers to come up with a bid by Monday morning. He was professional, personable, and smart. I was ready to hire him. Alas, I was outbid on the house. Still, Terry has definitely earned my business in the future, and as soon as I need a contractor, he will be the guy I call.

I decided, just to be safe, to gut most of the drywall, insulation, and carpeting myself but I got a bit carried away with demolition that I took down the existing drop ceiling too...didn't like it anyway. You Got A Guy Construction started and finished actually earlier than planned which I liked a lot, seeing a gutted basement is pretty depressing at times after what it used to look like. Also he kept in constant contact with through out. They did everything from re-running all of the electrical to drywall and installing a brand new floor! Plus they finished some clean up work that I hadn't gotten around too! Oh, and if it is trash day at your house, don't be surprised to find your garbage cans put back to where they belong !!!!! I have another project that I am looking to have done and can't wait to call Terry to get started, I still have some minor stuff to finish first though.
Description of Work: We were one of the unfortunate ones that had flooding in our basement last year so it was time to start all over again. Time to call contractors. After seeing all of the ads on TV we decided to join Angies List....glad we did! Our first estimates went well for the most part, all equally priced and the amount of time it would take. When it was this companies turn I expected much the same. I was a bit wrong. The owner, Terry, actually listened to my ideas (both good and bad) of the project and it was refreshing to hear some of his, the other companies didn't even bother, they just wanted to do the basics and be done. (See the picture of the support pole...his idea which looks cool now).

Terry from You Got A Guy Construction came over for the estimate. He was personable, professional and instantly put us at ease about the big job ahead of us. We had every intention of completing the job ourselves, but after framing and electrical rough inspections were completed, we simply had no more time to spend. The You Got A Guy Construction team came in and cleaned up some of my rough work (my framing was nowhere near professional quality) and got it ready for drywall. They worked independently, with free access to the house, and called or texted as needed to keep us informed or ask questions on how we wanted things handled. After a few days of material/tool drop-off the team got started. They were fast and clean, and within a few days we had insulation and drywall up and ready for paint. The paint and trim crew came in and did an equally excellent job. We couldn't be happier with the end result. Terry and his team even came up with a few tricks on the fly to fix issues that weren't originally planned for, such as cabinets that I wanted installed over plumbing shut-offs and in the way of ductwork. All in all a great job, very professional team, and a very satisfied customer.
Description of Work: Starting from my framing and electrical, You Got A Guy Construction completed the work on my basement, including insulation, doors, drywall installation, tape/mud, paint, trim, cabinets, a counter top and a stair rail.

Terry uses quality contractors and I would recommend him all home improvement jobs.
Description of Work: Terry from "You Got a Guy Construction" did a complete remodel of our upstairs bathroom. They tore out a divided wall and completely gutted the room. They installed a drop in soaker tub and a separate 3x4 ceramic tiled shower. They ran new electrical and cable and installed a wall mounted TV. They also added a new toilet and sink and vanity. All faucets and shower head were installed. they rerouted heat vent, and installed new lighting. The old ceramic flooring was removed and retiled the entire room. They hung my mirror, towel bars and picture. I had purchased a very thick bath rug and they were kind enough to shave door so it would accommodate the new rug. I purchased all the fixtures and tiles and all cosmetic items. I also did the painting. The cost was for labor and rough materials. They made sure to lay tarps leading to work area and left the area clean after each days work. The job took a bit longer than expected, but I am happy with the results.

Terry is a great contractor and takes pride in his work. He was very helpful and made arrangements to get my job done quickly and on time even though we were pulling him away to help my daughter at her home with a job that another contrator had messed up on. He made sure we were satisfied with all the work and did an amazing job with clean up as well. The team he brings in to work with him are top notch guys.
Description of Work: Terry and his team removed part of a wall, adding a spindle stair case to match existing stair case relocated electrical switches. They moved cable line and added an electrical box and hung a new TV wall mount and 43in TV. In addition, they moved a chandaler and added a ceiling fan with light. They also did the dry wall and mudding to complete the job and make it paint ready.

Terry had given my Mom an estimate for a job. I ran into issues w/ my flooring installation with another company, where they would not continue work until a licensed builder installed a level subfloor. My Mom got a hold of Terry who came out the very next day (Friday), gave me an estimate over the weekend, and performed the job Monday morning. The job was completed 4 hrs later. I am a newer homeowner, and would use Terry and his company again for any work needed.

My husband and I were very impressed by the work done by Terry, owner and operator, of You Got A Guy Construction and all the subcontractors that worked on this project in our home. Our bathroom is beautiful. Terry was very professional and courteous while working in our home. He cleaned the area every night before leaving so we could enjoy our home as much as possible during the construction. We were also impressed at his time managment. The entire project was completed within 2 weeks time as promised. You Got A Guy Construction's bid was very competitive and Terry stuck to our price point faithfully throughout the project. We will be happy to use You Got A Guy Construction again for future remodeling needs. We have no complaints and were very happy with the service we received.
Description of Work: We had our entire bathroom gutted out, rebuilt and remodeled from top to bottom. Our bathroom was old, out of date, and had a lot of water damage and mold. We also had a large window on the outside of the house in the bathroom that had a wall built over top of it in the shower area. You Got A Guy Construction rebuilt the floor, the walls, the ceiling, installed a new fan, tub, sink, toilet, tiled the shower walls and floor, installed new medicine cabinet, and all fixtures. You Got a Guy Construction also removed the old window and replaced it with a new frosted slider window that is bathroom appropriate size and shape, as well as replaced the siding on the outside of the house where the larger window frame was set.

We asked several contractors to provide quotes. Terry was the only one that quoted promptly, was serious about doing things right, and followed up with us. His quote was in right price range so we selected him. The start of the job was delayed a couple of weeks because the window shipment took longer than expected, but Terry continued to give us updates. We requested two changes in the middle of the job, which he accommodated with no problem. The job took 2 1/2 weeks, and each day they tidied up before leaving each day. What I really appreciated was that he gave us an update at the end of each day on the progress. I now have a beautiful sunroom to enjoy this summer.
Description of Work: We transformed our back porch into a sunroom with windows, doorwall, paneled walls, tiled floor, siding and brick paver step.

What started as a small project, add a main floor laundry and expand one closet, grew over time. They were very good about listening to our concerns and ideas, giving us feedback and providing estimates. The subcontractors were good and the overall project management was wonderful. This was phase one. We have ordered the window for phase two, a small bathroom update. We plan to redo more of our home as time goes on and will be using this company again.
Description of Work: We completely remodeled three bedrooms, two bathrooms, added a main floor laundry, and removed a wall in the basement. During the remodel, we replaced the windows in those rooms, changed the size of one bathroom and added a walk-in closet. We also replaced the main sewer line in the house.
