Description of Work: Installed a paver patio and did some grading on the side of the house for drainage purposes. The patio turned out nice except for a couple cracked pavers. The price for the patio was fair. About half of a competitor's. | |The grading didn't go so well. They ended up having to stay late the last day because they didn't want to come back for a third. Needless to say they were rushed and it shows. They had to temporarily remove a bunch of hostas and install two window wells. A couple of weeks later we noticed our hostas were dying. Turns out most of them weren't even planted. They were just set on the dirt. We also noticed that our fence wasn't completely put back together and they had broken the rail end. | |In conclusion, we like the patio. We wish they would have come back a third day so they wouldn't have been rushed and half-@ssed it, and we wish they would have told us about the hostas not being planted and the broken fence.

Gave a lot of good ideas but quickly pointed us to something for our house that matched perfectly. Cost was fair and just need to decide when I will do the project. Did identify other work on my rental property. Was completed on time and excellent quality. Will use them again for sure

She was not a landscape architect, and she said she had been to some school. I think I insulted her when I asked if she was a landscape architect. I assumed that if you are in the landscape business, you are a landscape architect. I had my yard landscaped once in Milford, Michigan and once in Phoenix, Arizona, and both jobs were fantastic. The drawings were professional. They were colored. They were huge drawings and very specific. This just looked like a five-minute sketch. It is what it looks like. In fact, I could not even read the first one at all. She had marks what the plants where, but I could not read them. It was blurred. It was just very unprofessional. If you want to get somebody’s business, that was not the way to do it. She only came out once. She called within a week after I purchased the big deal, and she came out a week later that. I am not positive about that. I talked to her and told her what I was interested. I have a circle at one end of my house out in the yard. It was built as round before it had a tree and some bushes around the edge of it. My daughter and I removed all that and I wanted put in, a small blooming tree such as a Dogwood, and then around it low things in a lot. I already have some low flowering plants and some Hydrangeas in the backyard. So, she sent the drawing and it had Hostice in it. I said that I did not even discuss Hostice and I said that I really have plenty of Hostice in the yard. I do not need it anymore and I do not want them. I had shown her a picture that I had. I have big plantings along the front of the house and it is all encased in a boarder. I said that I would like these things around the edge of the boarder. It was a Hosta, a Hydrangea, and then in between that she would put Annuals and skip. Then, she would continue that for about three plantings. I got it back and it was nothing like that in the drawing. She had Hostas in the circle with other things and had hostas along the sides with Evergreen. I only have the second drawing, and I cannot find the first one. I was kind of rueful, and I called her and told her I was not happy, and she had not followed one thing that I had said. She had to have the Dogwood tree. She came back and this is the drawing I got the second time. Again, I reinforced that I did not want any Hostice. I talked again about the picture that I had shown her and gave her the list of the things in the way they were arranged. So, I get back another drawing. She puts four Hostice with a dwarf Hydrangea in the middle and then around the edge of the place, she puts six Hostice, and S is equal something Ball. Bay lilies are put in the circle. I do not know what the S stands for. There is one dwarf Hydrangea and the rest is Hostice. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper. I have been so upset that I have not called her back. I was trying to think what to say and to say that I do not think that she wants my business because she obviously did not follow what I wanted. I would tell her to cancel the whole thing. I did not what to expect. I was not upset for the price. I thought it was a little overpriced. I thought the pricing would have been probably alright if the drawing had been correct. She was on-time though. I would absolutely not use her nor would I use the company in the future.

When I purchased a $49 landscaping consultation, listed on Angie's List as " $49 Outdoor Project Design Consultation, Drawings, and a $200 Credit," I guess I naively expected an actual consultation, drawings in the plural sense of the word, and a bit more engagement from the company. What I got was delay after delay. During my first phone call to The Guy, I spent over 45 minutes answering questions from the nice person who answered the phone. She indicated that a consultant would call me back to schedule an on-site visit. One week later, I had not heard from the consultant. During my next phone call to The Guy, they could not find the notes from the original phone call. So, more time wasted answering the same questions. And another promise that the consultant would call to set up an appointment. Another few days passed. Finally, after yet another prompting call from me, the consultant called to set up a time. And they seemed shocked that I could not meet with them until after 6 pm. They indicated they would "do me a favor" by meeting after 6. (At this point, if I'd known how, I would've requested a refund of my money.) The consultation was nothing more than a brief meeting in our current patio area looking at blurry pictures of their past jobs, and a catalog of paving stones I could've gotten on my own. The resulting "sketch" was so loose, it was nothing more than a few lines that looked like they'd been drawn on a napkin. No indication of the fire pit, the waterfall, the pond, or the other details we'd discussed. The estimate (expensive for such a small area) also didn't include any details, just general descriptions of demolition, paver installation and general services. Certainly nothing that would indicate the degree of work necessary, the building of any walls, waterfall stone needs, electrical, etc. Which leads me to believe that those would all be "add-ons" should I be foolish enough to contract with them. This is my second experience with The Guy - a family member had work done by them (poorly) - and I would not recommend them in any way, shape or form. Addendum: I received a phone call from a representative of The Guy. They put the blame for the poor sketch as being "something we don't usually provide. Angie's List made us do that as part of the advertising deal." The rep further suggested that I contact Angie's List for a refund - they claim that the $49 did not go to them, but all of the money went to Angie's List. Finally, their apology for taking so long to get back to me after my initial call was due to "it being our busiest part of the year." To which I had to wonder: Why would you run a deal like this during the busiest part of your year, especially if you knew that you couldn't adequately satisfy the new customers? I have upgraded the overall grade to a B. However, I question the intelligence of running this type of marketing during the busiest part of their year. P.S. The Provider Response from The Guy only partially addresses my complaints. No mention is made of the additional items that were discussed and were missing from the sketch - waterfall, firepit, etc. Nowhere did I say that the drawing was difficult to read. It was very easy to read - it just looked like a squiggly line that any child could draw. And while the folks at "The Guy" might think of 6 PM as being "after hours," I find it hard to believe that all their customers are available to take time off work to meet before 4:30 PM, which is when "The Guy" shuts down for the day.

When I met with the homeowners and I did so after hours to accommodate them. I quoted the main project and discussed what was asked. I also broke down the estimate with removal cost separate as it was requested. I was never notified (until reading this review that the drawing was difficult to read.) Or I would have been happy to mail a copy. If [removed member name] wants an additional consultation or ideas I would be happy to meet with him a second time.

Poorly - they visited and promised a landscape plan, quote for landscaping, irrigation and a deck. All we received was an illegible landscape sketch which did not match what we asked for. We were told 'the deal' was in the price of the landscaping. Actually I got a landscape deal more than $1500 less elsewhere. Sadly a waste of our $50 and time.

Landscaping is an extremely competitive business in which prices vary. The quote prices we provide to our customers is what our company would have to charge in order to make profit. We put our unpaid time and effort into this proposal in the busiest part of the season, it is unfortunate that we can not please everyone with our professional ideas. We are always more than willing to revise proposals if requested by the customer. The $50 this customer paid was to Angie's List for the coupon of receiving $200 off the project if they chose to hire us, not for the proposal. The estimates our company provides are FREE

The coupon states a $200 credit but their prices are so high there was no point of taking advantage of this. There is reference to drawings being provided the drawing we received was not anywhere near a professional drawing. I felt as though the $49 for the coupon was a waste of money. I called the contractor to discuss the estimate and they have yet to return my call.

In an extremely competitive business like landscaping, prices vary greatly. We are a small family owned business and we charge our customers the fairest price we can with still making profit. It is unfortunate that we can not please everyone with our proposals. In regards to not getting a return call, customers are always welcome to call either our personal number or our office number to leave a message. On 7/24/13 Maggie came to house to discuss cedar deck restoration because it was rotting out. She said she would investigate with suppliers and have a quote ready after 7/28. She called 7/26 to get email address to send quote to. Today is 8/1/13, no quote or follow up from 'The Guy' Decided to have a different contractor do the job.

I haven't hired Mr. Schiultz just yet. When he completes the job in the spring of 2013, I'll get back to you for a review. As of now he made a "first good impression".
Description of Work: Leroy Schultz (TheGuy) kept his appointment on time and this means a lot to me. Keeping the initial appointment for the estimeat makes a good first impression. I called Mr. Schultz to give me a price on replacing my old concrete slab porch which was falling apart due to poor mortor. Mr. Schultz offered a far more attractive alternative in that he suggested that I use a stone paver system. The paver system creates both the porch surface and steps and is less expensive than recreating the old style concrete slab. Mr. Schultz took all the deminsions and within a few days his estimate arrived in the mail on time and as promised. The estimate was competitive and I intend to call him in the spring to start the job. I would reccomend giving Mr. Schultz a call and consider him for your work to be done

Materials for this job were over half the cost of the project. Pond products are pricy for quality. This client thought the price was high according to the review. However what this client didn't mention is when the pond started leaking I came back out free of additional cost to inspect. After inspection a minor adjustment was needed and made for free. I charge a correct price so i can provide quality service and products.

I have been in my home for 13+ years & had an existing deck. During the years the deck had deteriorated & I had received estimates on having it replaced, which were quite a bit more than the pavers. Leroy Schultz & his daughter Maggie came out took a look & suggested putting in pavers. I have to say I am more than happy with the work performed. Maggie would make an appointment & they were always prompt. Originally the job was supposed to start before Memorial Day,and they did manage to remove the deck, but because of large amounts of rain, they were unable to keep going. They came in the Tuesday after Memorial Day & worked steadily removing 8" of soil and setting everything up for the finish product. They also added additional fencing & a new gate. They were more than patient, when I needed to let my 2 large dogs out, & would put the fence piece up & then again remove it. Leroy & Maggie were wonderful to work with. They had suggestions to give the yard a totally finished look & I believe they have achieved that. They are coming back in a couple of weeks to do additional landscaping. Hopefully I will be able to hire them again to do inside remodeling. I would highly recommend "The Guy".

This was a seasonal contract from 1 push to unlimited. We showed up every time it snowed to specifications of our contract. 2 times we did service, the snow had only accumulated to 1 inch our contract only obligates us to remove snow at 1.5 inches. In reference to the 4pm arrival we were there at 11 the night before. In fact, it didn't stop snowing until 10 the next morning. There was only 6 hours of lay time in between when the snow stopped. Up front we say in most snow falls will be removed within 6 to 8 hours well exceeding our contractual agreement of 24. There was never an issue with the way the snow was cleared. During the last snow fall, we placed their account higher up in our route and it was actually done in 1 hour and 25 minutes. In conclusion, we were well within limits of our contract and we have 60+ snow account that were very pleased with our service. Maggie Schultz, Manager

Overall, it was a satisfying experience. The job turned out to be a beautiful work of art for both porches. There were challenges getting to the end result. Any time you replace something existing that was built basically in 1961, there will be things uncovered that were not expected and part of the quote. We had some rotted timber supports for the house as one such surprise. They offered to help replace the 2x6 timber boards. Also, the old pavers removed from the porch was promised to my neighbor across the street. They put all of the pavers in several wheel barrel trips and delivered them where my neighbor told them to put them. I had a Dwarf Alberta Spruce that had to be removed. They removed it and planted it where I ask them to. These were not part of the original quote and they did not charge extra. They cleaned up all of the mess before they left. There was only a little dust left from the stone cutting which wasn't a big deal to me. They are a relatively new company in Royal Oak, with a small group of talented people. So when one of the stone cutters got sick we had to wait a couple of extra days for him to return. There were challenges, so everything didn't go completely smooth. But, when something went wrong they stayed on it until it was fixed to my satisfaction. The designer and salesperson Mike Noon is a very talented designer with many years in the business. Maggie one of the installers did exceptional work putting the patio pavers back in place to meet the new stone of the porch so it looked like it had been done at the same time. She was able to follow the original paver design to a tee. The ones that smoked even put their cigarette butts in a jar they brought with them for the purpose and took it away when they left. Nice touch. The owner Leroy Schultz was on the job site daily as was Mike Noon to make sure things were progressing as planned. I am very satisfied with the final results.
Description of Work: Rip out the old front and back paver porches and replace with cut block and stone porches. They provided designs for us to choose from and customized to our satisfaction. I had one other company bid for this work. Both companies were listed in Angie's List. They were both competitive. I chose The Guy Co. because they were listed as A in Angie's List and because I felt their design would complement our house and existing paver patio's and walks.
