There was a lot of work to be done. It took four days for three guys to complete. They cleaned up everything when they were done. There was left over compost and they would have spread it out, but I told them I'd rather keep it for use in my planting in other parts of my yard. The only delay was in starting the project because it was raining and very cold. The guys were very friendly and they didn't make any mistakes that had to be corrected. The whole project was perfect.
Description of Work: We had removed a swimming pool and had the area filled with soil. They cleaned out all of the underbrush and weeds from the surrounding area and replaced the fence that was removed so the pool extraction people could work. This included one tree that died over last winter and several privet bushes that I no longer wanted. They also cleared groundcover and weeds from the walkway up to the fenced garden (about 20 feet) so I can plant flowers there. They regraveled our driveway and put a couple of large landscape rocks near the end to keep people from driving on the end of our lawn. But the most important thing was building six square foot gardens. This included filling with my specification of soil mixture. It also included building trellises on the north side of each for vining plants and the square foot grid for each box. They used landscape timbers for the boxes and the way they constructed them, I don't think they will EVER fall apart. They put chicken wire fence around the wrought iron fence to keep rabbits out. They spread playground mulch over the entire area. The whole area looks like a blank slate and I can easily plant whatever I want without the hard work. I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out.

The problem was we asked for dead trees to be removed and replaced. We specified and pointed out the trees in advance. The worker came in and removed two full grown privacy bushes, which were perfectly healthy! They agreed it was their mistake, but the bushes were replaced with ones less than half their size. Big bummer and they did not offer a discount.

This was an unfortunate situation in which our workman removed the wrong trees. We did however install two new trees free of charge. We did not offer a discount on the work we provided because we replaced the trees for free (as we should). Yes, they were smaller size but because you can not purchase them in the size they had matured to. Within a few seasons the healthy trees we planted would grow to the proper size. We did our best in this situation.

Although we respect the opinion of our customers, we have to disagree with this statement. The Guy LLC offers home repair and kitchen and bathroom remodel. Inside work may require a separate crew than is sent out to perform outdoor work, but we most certainly could have scheduled an indoor repair and performed it beautifully.

Maggie was great with putting together quotes and communication - we have dealt with a lot of contractors and she was on time and communicated with us when she was running behind due to other jobs. She came out to our house 3 times to talk thru the project before we even committed and worked with us to squeeze us in to have the project complete before our son's gradation party. The crew that showed up was lead by Tim and he was fantastic, super friendly and totally tolerated my picky nature. At one point I changed the size of the area they were digging up near the end of the job and he just smiled and rolled with it. He also came out on a Saturday morning on the day of the party to finish one thing up for me that I asked to be changed. This, to me, was extremely appreciated as they do not work Saturdays and I knew he was helping finish the job for our party. They worked at the min 9-4pm each day and kept us in the loop. The quality of work was great, and they even came back out recently(in Sept) to fix an area that had sunk due to all the rain. I emailed Maggie and they came out within a week or so to fix it no questions asked. I highly recommend them for brick paver and landscaping work and definitely plan to use them again.
Description of Work: They did a full repair/remodel job to an existing brick paver patio by extending it and adding a wrap around step. They also created a second brick paver area, trimmed out two flower beds with brick and planted perennials and a tree, graded a couple uneven areas in our backyard and brought in crushed granite to fill a couple areas.
General feedback = not very prompt with email/phone replies. Sometimes 2-3 days with basic questions. And when the crew was out the first day they just left at Noon. I thought they were going to lunch but never came back and no one ever called or knocked on the door before leaving to say why. The next day I learned that the crew had been called off due to anticipated rain in the area, yet it actually only sprinkled for 30 minutes...and that was BEFORE they left! I took a day off work to be there for the first day of work so I was definitely frustrated. Feedback on work itself: -- weed/fern overgrowth - the work itself, once completed, was good. no complaints. -- seeding that area - due to weather and amount of weeds, a second application of weed killer was used and then seeded a couple weeks later; this was no problem but I had to follow up to check on status, etc. when a phone call notifying me would have been nice. -- power wash of patio - good. no complaints. -- crushed limestone installation to create more visual w/ plants - again, no complaints as this was a good add. My only frustration is that no weed killer was used under the limestone so two weeks later it was overrun with weeds sprouting through the stone. I wish that I would have been given a choice in whether or not to use killer or how to prevent regrowth. -- lay mulch in front yard beds - see above re: weeds -- install a covering between garage & fence to hide garbage cans (vendors suggestion). - this was a good idea and while I'm happy with it, the completed project was a piece of wood w/ two screws & a piece of plastic lattice. After a week the wood bar had rotated down so that the screws were so low you couldn't hang it. The solution was a nail in the fence to prop it. I also had to follow up when it wasn't painted white to match the lattice as promised. At the end of the day, I'm able to enjoy my backyard free of weeds/overgrowth. I just wish that for the amount of money paid, the quality of some products, communication, direct follow-up (without my taking the lead) would have been greater. The work performed was good but definitely a "mom & pop" type shop and the overall professionalism/communication reflected as such.
Description of Work: Backyard landscaping & design refresh. This included tearing up weed/fern overgrowth, seeding that area, power wash of patio, crushed limestone installation to create more visual w/ plants, lay mulch in front yard beds, install a covering between garage & fence to hide garbage cans (vendors suggestion).

I am selling my house in Royal Oak. I have already moved out, and needed somebody to take care of the place while the house was being listed. Called TheGuy, had always seen his flyers and trucks around. I wanted a spring cleanup as well, asking for removal of the large saplings and hedges squared in the back yard that needed trimming as well. They explained they would do anything outdoors I needed at a flat hourly rate of $78.00. A bit steep for lawn work, I thought, but she claimed it was actually for 2 individuals not 1, and the job would finish that much quicker. I suggested they drive by and take a look at the hedge because the hedges were not overly tall, but they might want to consider use an extension or step stool should the equipment to trim be short. She said it should not be an issue. I also wanted the saplings cut, weed whipped, and everything edged. She explained that edging was done every other $29 visit. But would make note of the request. Later in the week received an invoice, for $234, 3 hours work. Then a second invoice, because the first one was wrong they forgot to put some $25 extra fee in there for wood chips used. Ok, fine, whatever. I gladly paid the bill. Happy to know it was cleaned up. I wish I hadn?t. I should have just told them I?d find somebody else after the outcome. A few days later I went to the house and found that the saplings were still growing around the trees, the edging had not been done, and the hedges were only ½ done, and not half done like ½ of the total hedges done, but only the half they could cut with trimmer from the ground, I would guess they did not bring a step stool like I suggested originally. But rather found it acceptable to just cut the top half way and leave. They looked horrible on top, the closest side was cut down about 1 ft from the back half which stood all overgrown and out of control. Yet they billed me for this job. I took pictures of it all, sent an email with the pictures and explained that I was very disappointed. A woman named Sarah wrote me back and said she was sorry for the issues, and will send out a work crew to return and address the bushes. (But she left out a key piece of information; they will be back out, at the same per hour charge) I later returned, the bushes got a bit more trimmed off and were at least square. Edging still had not been done, and saplings were still there, but as she explained to me originally, the edging might actually get done every other trip. Maybe they will get this next week. The grass looked like they came in with a industrial tractor and did 2 sweeps though the yard and were gone in 5 minutes. The first thing they realtor said to me when she showed up for final pictures were, ?you need to fire whoever it is doing the lawn work around here? She?ll send over her handy man to clean up this mess quickly so we can get pictures. That was until this morning. When I was contacted by phone. Asking if I received the invoices via email, or the ?collection? calls. Because I had not paid my bill since the first invoice. Who exactly did you call? Not this number that I just answered your phone call on. Or that email address. I work in IT, I know if emails are sent or not sent, I checked the inbox and the spam filters, and our gateways, and there were no emails ever sent. I asked her to send me them again while we were on the phone, and magically here they all come, just like the magic of me just now picking up the phone they never called before. What?s in the invoice??? Well how about another $78 an hour for FIXING the hedges. 3 more cuts, at $29 and the edging is still not done? weeds are now coming out of the cracks between driveway slabs, saplings I gave up on and did myself. The kid down the street with a push mower who did it all cockeyed and uneven did a better job than this. I seriously expected a profession service and just never saw a glint of professionalism out of any of this. I told the woman on the phone, ?just send me the invoices, and stop doing the work, I?m really not happy with any of this service, it?s something I can?t be bothered with right now.? She then informs me of the cancelation fee? WHAT? Oh, yeah, another thing you forgot to inform me of, Oh, there?s that pattern again. Whatever, I pay somebody to do the lawn for me because I have bigger things I need to deal with. I was able to at least talk her out of that fee. Like many in the area, my whole house was flooded this week; I have so many other issues to worry about right now then this racket here. I paid all of it, just to make it go away, I don?t want to argue about it. Have my extra money for the work you want to claim done right the first time. All the glossy cards left on area doors, and mail flyers with the cute little stick guy on it is great marketing, but I?m better off with the kid that walks up and down the street with the push mower and takes a few minutes to put some pride in the job. I went and did the edging myself as well.

Response from The Guy-Lawn, Landscape, Home Improvement
[Member Name] called us for help with the lawn care at a property he was putting on the market. He explained that he had been focused on the interior work and that the exterior needed some attention because of that. He signed up for bi weekly lawn service (which is explained detail by detail upon signing up, and is also followed by a lawn service agreement being sent to the customer, and then agreed to by the customer before lawn service is performed (either by signing it or sending an email response of “I agree” which [Member Name] did.) Bi weekly service is a lawn mow every other week, trimming with a weed whacker and ONCE MONTHLY edging. This was explained in the phone call and also in the lawn service agreement [Member Name] agreed to. He also signed up for a separate crew to come out and do a bush trimming to trim hedges in back square in shape, remove a dead bush from the front garden, apply grass seed and hay to bare spots on the back lawn, trim saplings from large trees on property (as in trim the saplings off the trunk of the tree, which was done as asked, he never scheduled a weeding to remove saplings growing in the ground, that is a different service but could have been added to this work order had he asked, because it is performed at the same rate as everything else) refresh existing mulch, and a “light clean up” which is raking the lawn, trimming back perennials, refreshing mulch etc. All of this was done in the estimated 3 hours and charged accordingly. The “extra 25 dollar fee” was actually a correction because the first invoice did not charge him for the mulch we used, so of course we sent a corrected invoice that included the mulch. [Member Name] asked no questions about the corrected invoice, despite the note at the end to “please contact with any questions or concerns”. Matt did send a picture which showed his hedges were only half trimmed on top upon the first visit, I happily sent the workmen back out to complete the project. Of course {member name] was charged for additional time, this was an HOURLY rate project, if it takes more time, you are charged more, regardless if there was a second visit needed or not the bill would have been the same either way. Edging is done by our lawn crew, which is a completely different crew than the landscaping crew that performed the bush trimming. As for “the grass looked like they came in with a industrial tractor and did 2 sweeps through the yard and were gone in 5 minutes” this is a professional lawn care company that was only hired to come out every other week to cut the grass. How long did expect us to take cutting the lawn when we have 200 lawns to cut and his is only cut twice a month? If he wanted the grass to be more manicured, he should have signed up for the suggested weekly service. Also, he never called to complain about the look of the lawn. How are we supposed to fix something if there was never a complaint made to make us aware there was a problem? When I asked [Member Name] this in our phone call he said “well, you know, I figured id just let it go at the time” Why? If you were unhappy, wouldn't you let us know? Other than the bush trimming being incomplete, NO complaint was EVER made until I called him to collect the billing he did not pay. We have a email program that records every email sent or received. All we have to do is type in a name and all the emails come up to and from that person, with dates attached. Three emails were sent with no response, [Member Name] claims he never got them. But we had communicated via email before at that address when he sent pictures of the bush trimming, so we are positive the email address was correct and they DID go through. Maybe there was a complication with the mail program, but after sending each of those emails, a collections call was placed as a reminder that there was still an outstanding balance and to confirm the email was received, a message was left every time, with no return. [Member Name] also claims he never got any of those voice mails. How can you miss three voicemails AND three emails? Is he suggesting we DIDNT call for him to pay the bill? That is absurd, OF COURSE we called to be paid for work we did. As any one else does when they are owed money, we called and emailed multiple times. There was no “magic” involved. I called and he finally answered, I’m guessing because it was more convenient time for him, not because it was “magic” I then sent all the invoices he “didn't receive” and could hear the email ding in the background that they went through. There was a bill for bi-weekly lawn service (we were contracted to perform) and doing a touch up on the hedges (the additional hour it took to complete the bush trimming.) Weeds coming out of the cracks of the sidewalk or the saplings growing under the tree are not our responsibility unless we are requested to do a weeding (which we weren't) or a weed spray (which we weren't). Again, NO complaint was ever made other than the incomplete bush trimming. [Member Name] never called to cancel service either, he only canceled after I tried to collect payment when he said “ill pay it in full, just cancel the services because I wasn't entirely happy” and he explained the real estate agent bashed the lawn care and said her maintenance guy would come out to do it (sounds to us like she just wanted work for her maintenance crew) Like I said, when I asked “why didn't you call to complain if you were unhappy with the service?” he replied “I thought i’d just let it go at the time” How did he expect us to correct something when we weren't aware of the problem? When it comes to the cancelation fee, that is written on the lawn service agreement that was agreed to by [Member Name], it is not our fault he didn't read the entire form before agreeing to it. Also, he didn't “talk me out of it” I told him because it was only two days before the cancelation fee is no longer applied (after August 15th our customers are welcome to cancel without the cancelation fee) I would waive the fee as long as he paid in full over the phone, which he did, so I then waived the fee. I chose to do that for him, I didn't have to by any means, as that charge is clearly stated on our contract. When [Member Name] informed me of the flooding in his basement I was sympathetic and wished him the best on getting it all cleaned up and his home quickly sold. I even sent that sentiment in an email after our phone call (as I truly hope it goes well for him) He thinks we charged him “extra money?” he was charged for services that we performed the rate our company charges. If he felt that rate was too high, there are plenty of other companies he could have chosen to help him. We ended this phone call with a very pleasant conversation about selling his home and me wishing him the best. I’m unsure why he then went and wrote an extremely unfair and inaccurate review on Angie's List after I was gracious enough to waive the cancelation fee we were entitled to. Again with making complaints without ever informing the company of them. [Member Name] lead me to believe the entire situation was resolved, and then went on to review us in unfair light. The bottom line is-if there is a problem AT ALL you HAVE to make the company you are dealing with aware of the issue or it isn't going to be resolved, whether it is our company or any other company. We are always happy to fix any concerns our customers have, but we cant fix a problem we don't know is there.

One of the silliest encounters ever. I was asked details about the job, told the hourly rate and given a telephone estimate of likely time before anyone looked at the job. I was told an estimator wd come to provide a quote. I was later called and told that I cd get a quote after someone came out and did a "diagnostic" that wd cost $78. I asked if this meant it will cost me $78 regardless of whether I hired The Guy. I was told, "No," and Sarah then went on to explain by what sounded like a set rehearsed piece the conditions that mean precisely that the answer to my question is "Yes." It became clear that Sarah was incapable of understanding basic questions in clear English and was capable only or reciting set sales pitches. So, bottom line is there was a bait and switch. An offer to look and provide an estimate replaced by an attempt to sell a "diagnostic." In fact no one from The Guy actually looked at the job. This was one of the silliest and least professional encounters I have ever experienced.

We were due to show up at this customers home between 9am and 10am to perform a simple home repair job reattaching facial board. We put in a courtesy call at 9:30am to let her know we were having some job related difficulties and that we were running a little late. We made it to the customers home at 10:10 am ( TEN MINUTES late) She called at 10:30 acting extremely irate toward our owner, and was entirely unaware our workman had already been present and working for 20 minutes. We were more than courteous to this customer but she was completely unreasonable. She is not the type of customer we enjoy working for. We take a lot of pride in our customer relations and highly value communication, understanding and punctuality. Her review said nothing about her being displeased with the job we performed and nothing about us being impolite or unprofessional. To get an F rating for being ten minutes late after calling the customer ahead of time and letting her know we were running late shows how unreasonable she truly was.

Nice and knowledgeable about plants but so unreasonable with an appropriate plan for our property. Their plan seemed to be based on a cookie cutter approach, using the same designs, types of stone and water features for all jobs. We felt like it was overpriced and did not take into consideration our home, neighborhood or budget. We live in a nice working class neighborhood where people don't spend $8,000 on landscaping. Unfortunately this company did not offer to create a plan within our budget or to meet our individual needs.

None of our design are based on a cookie cutter pre plan. They are ALL done on an individual basis. This person would not share a budget with me so I had to asses the scope of work desired and come up with a plan that way. Given the fact that with this particular person wanted a very particular style of plants. Plus when I met with her I spent over an hour at her home most of which was spent looking at unique plants only ORANGE PURPLE OR RED was requested. Given this level of attention to detail the client was telling me that they wanted a elaborate design. This project was a complete landscape design including a flagstone walkway and patio, all plantings, decorative stone, and mulch. The area of the main project was approx 65'x45' and also included plants all along existing deck that was approx 25' long and both sides of the paver walkway out to the pool that was almost 75' long. The bid included tear and haul away of debris. If the design was too elaborate for the client it would have been nice to just get a return call after the bid was sent (in response to my call to confirm that the bid was received) and could have been easily down scaled. By the way the quote to get all of this work done was $6800.00 not $8000.00. Which I know is a great deal. All a customer has to do is say wow this is beyond what i am looking for. I think that people need to remember when working with any contractor on a project that they need to work WITH the contractor to create a project that is both esthetically pleasing and friendly to their budget.

After receiving the proposal I had sent out she was going to send me back the design with her notes for review and redesign. It didn't even include a pondless waterfall. That was a discussion that we had during our meeting and didn't make the proposal. When it comes to the notes I never got them! As far as I am concerned this person decided that they didn't want to move forward based on the none responsiveness of the customer to follow up emails that were sent. Not up to the job? Actually we have been building landscapes like this for 20 plus years. Have a staff of 15 and 7 trucks and lots of additional equipment. We are after all The only guy to call who does it all! Interior and exterior transformations. The only reason I can see why she would have gotten that impression is because we were booked out 3 weeks at that point and were VERY busy.

Represented by a nice young woman who seemed knowledgeable about plants. Perhaps our expectations were too high, but we hoped to receive a landscape plan that could transform the yard and landscaping of the neglected 60's colonial we purchased and updated. I think the heart of their business is construction - decks, pergolas, patios and water features. We wanted ideas, not a contractor.

If you keep reading our reviews about the big deal (and compare them to our other reviews) it is fairly obvious we had a bad ad campaign that was put together by the Angie's List rep. The ad was poorly worded, and unfortunately costumers did not get what they were lead to expect. The value of the deal is a $200 coupon off a project. It is true, we are contractors, projects are the heart of our business. We do GREAT work (represented by our many A reviews) and we LOVE doing the projects we are hired to complete. It saddens us that The Big Deal did not go as anyone expected (including us). We ask you to be mindful that the majority of the The Big Deal reviews were written by people that never hired us to complete a project. If they had, we are confident they would be exceptionally pleased with the service.

Description of Work: I had them do a variety of things for me on three different occasions. They have poured concrete for my driveway and sidewalk. He has also completed some handyman repairs for a bunch of things around my house.

They researched the job before coming out to my house, and realized they were not licensed to do the work. They called me and cancelled the appointment rather than waist my time.
Description of Work: I purchased one of the coupons for an analysis and quote for a deck replacement. Once they understood the scope of my job they determined they were not licensed to perform the work.

Great experience from the quick response to quote to finishing in the time frame required. The price was not the lowest but was fair to them and us.
Description of Work: Installed new walkways and driveway aprons using pavers.

missed appointment but came later in the afternoon, some foul-up at the office. the person viewed my yards, front & back, gave ideas as to renovations and promised drawings and an estimate. Total time about 1/2 hour. Received the drawing, hand drawn on graph paper and the estimate broken out by projects via email. the business said the value in the coupon was the $200 off of actual work done. I valued their expertise more and was expecting a more detailed drawing. a little disappointed in the outcome.
Description of Work: came to home, viewed and gave ideas on landscaping. emailed a quote with drawings

The Guy was the lowest estimate. 2 of the 5 companies I contacted never called back, and the other 2 had high estimates with a vague scope of work. The Guy was on site quickly, and completed the job in 3 days. The It looks great. I will definitely be using The Guy for future renovations.
Description of Work: The Guy removed a rotting wooden porch and the plants around it and replaced it with a paver-based porch. We also removed the 60+ year-old sidewalk and replaced it with a paver path.

I called a couple of times. The first time they didn't call me back. The second time, they did call me and let me know they don't service my area. I was not able to use the deal.
Description of Work: I purchased the Big Deal for $49 Outdoor Project Consultation, Drawings, and a $200 Credit

Our brick pavers were in pretty bad shape. Maggie came out to give me an estimate. She was great to work with. She was very responsive, and she scheduled the work promptly. Kevin did a great job. I found Maggie and Kevin to be prompt, courteous and professional. I will definitely use" The Guy" again for other projects.
Description of Work: Power washed , re-sanded and sealed existing brick pavers.
