Description of Work: I needed 3 quotes for a recent move. O'Sullivan said they knocked and no one answered. I checked for the correct address, as I was home. I called the company 45 minutes later to ask what was going on. The address was correct. I scheduled a second appointment, and a no-show again. No way would I recommend this company!

We had a long a complicated mortgage process when buying a foreclosure. O'Sullivan was great in being accommodating and responsive with moving dates and a last minute need to move items into storage. The guys were pleasant and on-time. We thought it a 5-star experience until we found some damaged items. We had a couple lampshades that were damaged - one came off the truck damaged (basically shredded) and the other was forced inside another shade, which had to be broken in order to remove it. Most of our items were moved into the basement, but did so in such a way that it was hard to get to everything (heaviest boxes on the outside, no organization in terms of item sizes, etc). Over the last week or so we've began to organize our boxed things - SIDENOTE - our new home is currently undergoing renovation, so we didn't need immediate access to everything right away. Upon moving things around, we found out two expensive, vintage items of ours were severely damaged. First item is a Mid Century Modern Danish wood framed loveseat - one of the legs was totally broken off. Second item is a 1955 console record player that appears to be majorly manhandled; one of the plastic dials is missing, and several panels on it are loose and detached. Both were in perfect condition when they were moved. The loveseat is hardwood and leather, and has essentially never been sat in - just sat in a side room for us, and from the family (whom we know, that we got the piece from) it had the same life. The record player was rarely used and never had a scratch on it. Apparently the insurance claim process with O'Sullivan requires that you make a claim within 10 days of the move. While that's clearly stated on the moving contract, it seems like a stretch that anyone can go through a household of goods within 10 days after a move. Anyway, I made the claim with the office and was told the following: Lampshades should be crated and are not reimbursable because they're fragile. I get it, but the one was FORCED into the other - that wasn't an accidental break, they were handled/stored inappropriately. Regarding the loveseat, apparently 45 days after the fact, one of the movers miraculously recollects there being a crack in the leg, so they're not responsible. Memory is a magical thing. And lastly, the record player can just be nailed back together. Even if they did honor any of the damage, under the standard insurance plan, it would only be worth $30 which is less than the $250 deductible, so therefore nothing. I'm really disappointed. Granted, they looked at my claim after the 10 day window, the guys were great, the company's flexibility was wonderful and timeliness was also great, but these items were manhandled. Between moving twice and having my things stored in their warehouse for almost a month, I paid over $2200 and ended up with damaged items. Vintage, irreplaceable, costly to repair items. I'm not happy. I would recommend them, but MAKE SURE you take photographs of your rare/vintage items that you are concerned with protecting.

While we greatly appreciate your business and understand your frustrations, I must refer to the type of insurance the customer selects when determining the final outcome of any claims. As I mentioned to you in our conversation via email today after reviewing your claims that were turned in today, we offer all of our customers 3 different valuation options to protect your belongings while in transit. You must select an option each time you move; when we picked up your lot and then again when we delivered your lot. Both times you selected our Standard Coverage, at no additional charge, which allows you a refund of $0.60 per pound for any damaged article. You were offered our Depreciated Value Protection which has an additional cost of $2 per thousand dollars of value declared by the customer and Full Replacement Value Protection which has an additional cost of $7.25 per thousand dollars of value. You also initialed next to the option of requesting crating or not stating you did not want crating. Crating is offered at an additional charge for any high risk item which is elaborated in our contract to include items such as lamps, pictures, mirrors, glass, etc. We will move these items. However, if you choose not to purchase crating in order to move them the proper way then we will not be liable for any damages that occur to these uncrated high risk items. These options are also emailed to you prior to each move for you to review and be prepared on your moving date to select the insurance option you would like. In addition, I spoke with the driver who was the lead mover on your relocation into our storage facility on 12/10/16 and your delivery on 1/3/17. Your move into storage was under 2 months ago and your delivery was just a couple weeks ago. This particular driver/mover has been with our company for 15+ years. Considering this was a storage job, unlike most regular day to day moves, he does recall your job. The inventory that you signed on the day of your move lists all of the articles and a description of the condition of each. Your record player and love seat where both listed as worn. You stated in your review that this vintage chair was not used by you in 10+ years and the same with the previous owners. I believe it would be safe to say that had there been a crack down the leg (which our driver stated he noticed when he moved it into our storage facility) that this could've been easily overlooked since this love seat was used as a decorative piece only. My claim determination stated that unfortunately this portion of your claim was denied since we cannot take responsibility for an item that is already damaged being damaged further due to being moved. Your record player does have dials and naturally small loose pieces of any type of furniture can work their way loose during a move. That is just not something we can take responsibility for either. These types of items should be packed away by the customer if it is not a permanent fixture on the piece of furniture. The same would go for small pegs to shelving units, casters on chairs/tables, etc. You listed a weight for all items claimed totaling 102lbs. Had we validated your claim you refund would've been calculated by $0.60 per pound allowing you a refund of $61.20. However, all claims are subject to a $250 deductible which would eliminate any refund that did not exceed that amount. As I stated in my email conversation with you, I do apologize that I could not do more for you. We can only provide our customer with our Terms & Conditions and insurance options to review prior to the move in order to make a conscious decision on moving day in order to know what you are signing, but ultimately, you choose the coverage you want and I must abide by the terms of our contract. I explained to you that if you felt like revising your initial Yelp review of 5-stars to reflect a negative review due to the outcome of your claim determination being determined based upon the option you chose, then that is your choice. Can't recommend this business enough: - the movers were very professional, polite and efficient - hardly any damage was done, only a small cheap lamp was broken - the cost was quite reasonable. Very well. Movers arrived on time, were courteous and completed all work in less than two hours. This was the third time I have used O'Sullivan and each time with the same results: on-time, no damage, and priced competitively. If I need a mover in the future, I would choose O'Sullivan based on their great work for me in the past.

The move went smoothly and I found that both movers were understanding, helpful and quick workers. I was nervous for my move, and they reassured me that they had everything under control and even made me laugh. I found them to be efficient with the move, and protected all my furniture. The only complaint I have (which was not with the movers themselves) was that when I called initially and again to confirm details, the staff answering the phones assured me that carpet protection would be provided and laid down at the house. Since it was snowing / raining, the first trip down the stairs tracked mud in on my newly cleaned carpets because protection was not laid down as I requested. The men said they were given hardwood floor protection (as I requested) but nothing for the carpets. I luckily had something my friend loaned me, which we put down, but that was after the mud was already tracked in. Other than the small hiccup, I was pleased with O'Sullivan and would recommend them to friends who move.

Personnel were prompt, courteous, and pricing below big name competitors. All goods moved in lass than 8 hours, while competitors were suggesting it might be a two day process. Company supplied additional workers and moving vans to expedite process without any additional cost over estimate. This is the 3rd time I've used this company, and even though it has changed ownership, the quality and service is still excellent, and I would not hesitate to call them again.

The crew of three men arrived on time driving two lift gate trucks. They packed 55 pieces of furniture, 13 lawn furniture pieces, two heavy antique solid oak French doors from my in-law's first house in Detroit, a snow blower, lawn tractor, 10" table saw and a bunch of other stuff including a 3' by 4' framed mirror made by my father-in-law. They had the truck weighed and then drove sixty miles from Warren to Fort Gratiot and unloaded the two trucks. From arrival to unloading was nine hours. My wife and I were very happy and satisfied with the highly professional level of personal conduct and the men's work ethic. They completed the job one and a half hours sooner than estimated. They saved us more than one hundred dollars. I shared that with them. I chose O'Sullivan primarily because, although the company has a B rating, the comments and complaints were answered and not ignored by management. I liked that. I felt sure I could trust the company. The crew that moved us, David, Bobbie and Jesse, went above and beyond in carefully handling our goods. When unloading at the Fort Gratiot address Bobbie wiped every piece of furniture as it left the truck. It was evident that these men worked together as a team before. My impression was that they each knew what to do and when to do it without being told. This was an accomplishment because to load the furniture they had to bridge from the lift gate to the top of the first level of steps in the retaining wall and then place a ramp up the steps to the front porch. The whole effort was made much easier by the attitudes of the men. They were friendly and we reciprocated. It was like old friends had come to help us move. My wife offered them coffee and soft drinks but the men declined. If I ever have to move again I'm calling O'Sullivan Moving and Storage. I dealt with Mike and Bill in the office and both were kind and helpful. I'll be sure to ask for David, Bobbie and Jesse to move our stuff. Not one item was so much as scratched.

I've used other movers in the past and these guys were rough with our items and didn't use enough padding in the trucks. This resulted in a lot of scratched furniture, several broken/damaged items, and banged up walls and doors. They didn't protect carpet at all and stained my brand new stairway with their dolly. In many cases they ignored which rooms boxes were supposed to go in. It took days to find things and relocate boxes around the house to the proper rooms. When their two trucks filled up, they sent a third truck to help unload the two full trucks instead of back to the previous location to pickup the rest of my items. It took me and two others, all day the next day to move the items left behind. Additionally, the team leader was grumpy and had a bad attitude from the start. The estimated time and resources for the job where done over the phone, which was a very inaccurate process.

I did not receive a phone call from you to report any claims. Had you done so then your issues would have been investigated and resolved. Our estimating process is generally very accurate. The owner quoted your job. It seems that you had a significant amount more articles than what were divulged over the phone. Due to this I can only assume the movers, in an effort to save you time/costs, moved quickly and simply placed the boxes in the house not taking the time to set them in specified rooms. In addition, we brought 10 runners per your request to protect your hardwood floors. Our moving trucks are all fully stocked with stacks of moving blankets to protect your items. Your furniture is then quilt pad wrapped for transportation. We do have a time limit on claims which has expired for your move. I was very pleased with O'Sullivan Moving and Storage, I hired for my late-November 2014 move. Larry and Mike led the quoting process efficiently and effectively, truly helping me facilitate my process of moving ? with their office staff providing clear, useful, timely information and assistance when needed. Ryan and Eric were punctual and easy to work with on moving day: courteous, professional, and hardworking. They took care of all my requests, clearly assessed my options with a definite priority for customer service, as I navigated the various judgment calls that arose as we went along. I wouldn't hesitate to call O'Sullivan Moving & Storage to help with my next move, or provide storage services (provided the move is in Michigan ? and frankly I'd be interested in their recommendation even if it was an out-of-state, cross-country or different type of move that's not their specialty). I don't recall any of my previous moves actually taking a good bit less time, energy and resources than expected, or coming in with a lower total bill than expected, as this one did! Moving usually represents some sort of transition, a milestone to cross, and there is value in making the transition and crossing the milestone as clearly and well as possible. You and your possessions are in good hands, with O'Sullivan Moving.They know the moving business, and they do it well ? transforming an experience that can be a stressful experience into more of a pleasure.
Description of Work: Provided excellent customer service, hard work, and moving expertise -- making my move so much easier than expected. Specifically, they moved boxes, furniture and a few miscellaneous items from my 10'x15' storage unit to the other half of my garage.

This is a very difficult review to write because the individual workers are top notch, professional, and dedicated. Dave and Jeff are awesome! However, my experience with Larry Thomas the estimator was so horrible that it has tainted my whole experience that I will never use this company again and will not recommend them to other people. If you do use this company, insist on not working with Larry. I also found the owner Mike Sullivan to be rude, belligerent and unprofessional in my dealings with him. Here is what happened. In Dec. 2014, I hired O Sullivan to move my furniture from storage at their warehouse to my new house. I explained that I wanted the cash discount. Larry explained that I would need to move Mon-Weds. so I selected Weds. Dec. 10. He then sent me an email and I QUOTE VERBATIM: "Upon their [movers] arrival they will need to collect $2684 in cash or certified check before they can begin to unload." So I assumed that he was giving me a choice of either cash or a certified check as that is what the email said. I selected a certified check. When the movers arrived on Dec. 10, I gave them the certified check but they said Larry was insisting on cash. I explained that Larry sent me an email saying cash or certified check. I showed the leader Jeff the email. They called Larry and he insisted on cash, saying that the attachment to the email said cash. I spoke to Larry and it was the most infuriating and unprofessional conversation I have ever had. Larry refused to even acknowledge how I could be confused, insisting that the attachment said cash only. I explained that I assumed I was given a choice of cash or certified check (certified check is guaranteed funds) because that IS WHAT HE SAID IN THE EMAIL. Apparently, I was supposed to read Larry's mind to know that when he said certified check he really meant only cash. He would not even acknowledge that I was given conflicting information. He had the audacity to tell the workers not to unload until I got cash. Well I no longer had enough cash in my account because I got the certified check, and if you return a certified check, there is a 90 day hold on funds. Luckily, the workers, after seeing the email, decided to unload anyway and deal with the money at the end. I cannot say enough how professional and great the workers are. (As an aside, why would a company insist on cash and not a certified check when certified check is equivalent to cash? Just saying ....) After they were done, I owed $255 more so I went to an ATM and paid that in cash, tipped all 11 workers in cash, and gave them the certified check for $2684. Thank goodness the workers were professional enough to accept it. However, I spent what should have been an exciting move date very aggravated and stressed about how I was going to pay for it if they did not accept certified check. Again, luckily the workers were reasonable and professional. My second bad experience with O Sullivan was on the front end. I called Larry to get an estimate of how much it would be to move from my old house into storage and the monthly storage rate. He asked me a lot of questions of the amount of stuff I had. I became concerned because I was just guessing. I even called back to say I greatly underestimated the stuff I had. Larry assured me that it would only matter in the hourly rate, so if I had more stuff, there would be more man hours. That seemed reasonable. On the move day, the estimate was on the low end because I had so much stuff and I happily paid the extra amount. However, I had been told the storage rate for the furniture would be $285 a month but Larry later called and said it would be $585 a month! I explained that he had only informed me that the hourly man rate would go up and never mentioned the storage rate could more than double. I asked to speak to the owner Mike Sullivan and all he could do was berate me for underestimating how much stuff I had. He would not even let me explain my side -- that I called back and said I was underestimating and worried, but Larry had minimized it, saying it only mattered for hourly rate. I explained that I understood Sullivan's point - that more stuff meant more storage space -- but was upset because I had not been informed that my rate could more than double. I felt that now that my furniture was at their warehouse, I had no choice but to pay the rate of $585 a month that I had not budgeted for at all. What upset me was that Mike was unprofessional and could not even fathom how I could be upset and refused to take any responsibility for miscommunication by his employee. When I asked him if he could at least articulate my position back to me, he actually could not even do it and just kept yelling at me for underestimating the amount of stuff I had. It was very upsetting and unprofessional. If there was a way to hire just the workers and not deal with Larry Thomas or Mike Sullivan, I would use the workers. But that is not the case so I don't recommend this company at all. There are dozens of other reputable moving companies and life is too short to deal such unprofessional behavior. .

Hello [member name removed], I do apologize that there was a communication issue with understanding our estimates. Generally, we can quote most jobs over the phone. Larry has been with our company for almost 30 years. If he feels it is necessary or if requested, he will do an in-home survey. Your quote was provided over the phone. Usually we estimate more on the high side since things can be overlooked during a move and we want our movers to be prepared when they arrive. Considering this is just an estimate, we emphasize that we charge by the hour. Whether you have more or less than what we went over on the phone, you will be charged for the actual time it takes to complete your move. This is a non-binding estimate. This means that the price can increase or decrease due to the actual amount of articles to be moved-this does not mean that we change the hourly price. Rather, the job just takes more or less time which will fluctuate the final price. We do whatever it takes to complete your move. Here is where I believe the confusion came into play. On your estimate we listed a price range our estimator believes your final moving bill will fall within as well as your monthly storage price. Since this is an estimate everything on this form is quoted and not binding. Naturally, if your job takes longer to complete due to more articles then the amount of space you need for storage will increase as well. You expressed in your review that you were happy to pay the difference in the moving charges because you were aware that you had more articles. However, you were not happy to pay more for storage. However, both were quoted on the same form. Meaning, they were both estimated costs. In regards to our discounted rates, we offer a cash discount that we will honor if you book your job on certain days of the week. This is an incentive to fill up our weekday slots as weekends are very popular. Our terms of payment are cash, certified funds, or any major credit card. Just like gas stations have discounts for paying with cash versus credit card we do the same thing. For jobs that qualify for our discount we have a red stamp that is clearly stamped on the estimate and reads the days of the week that we are offering this discount and states, “Estimated with cash discount @...” and then we list your price quote. We also have a preprinted section on the same form which lists your quote based upon our regular rates (if you choose to pay with certified funds or credit card). You have the option of whether you would like to take advantage of the discount being offered to you. We go over this verbally, and then we either mail or email the quote to you since there is a lot of information to retain and we want our customers to have a chance to review everything we discussed over the phone in the event that you have questions or concerns. Initially, we quoted you $1765 cash or $1965 credit for you move into our storage facility. Your final cost was $2252 with our cash discount. The job exceeded your estimate by $487. Your storage was quoted at $285/mo and the final cost was $585/mo. Generally, we charge $39/per storage vault per month. The final charge was discounted for you. The moving and storage estimated costs were based upon the information we gathered from you which was 51 pieces of furniture, 10 chairs, 50-60 boxes, and 10-20 miscellaneous pieces (141 total estimated articles). When the move was completed your actual inventory was 125 pieces of furniture, 37 chairs, 194 boxes, and 68 miscellaneous pieces (424 actual articles). This is a difference of 283 articles that we were not anticipating. Given the extreme overage in articles to be moved the amount that your quote exceeded does not seem as significant. Had you actually had only 141 articles like we quoted you for then we could’ve honored the estimated storage rate, but since your actual storage content tripled, that was not possible. I would like to note that although the quote for delivery of your storage specified two different amounts one for paying with cash and another for using certified funds or credit card, we accepted your certified check and still honored the cash discount for you. As a whole you saved almost $1000 using our cash discounts with your pick up, storage, and delivery.
