I had gotten many estimates and I chose Brick Concepts because of Ken (owner). From our first meeting he impressed me with his willingness to go a step beyond as well as his determination to achieve a fantastic color match. Ken was wonderful to work with (as was his crew). After one brick yard after another, he presented us with around ten samples to choose between. He did manage to find our brick, but they had discontinued our size. We all chose our favorite brick, but, once he had started, he realized it wasn't matching well enough so he took different colored bricks and mixed them together. In the front, he even moved some of our original brick that was still in good condition over to a section that had to be demolished further down so that our actual brick helped it all blend. My husband and I feel his work was definitely worth the cost and we love the new look of our new home.
Description of Work: Our chimney had to be demolished at least fifteen courses (more than originially expected - although no further cost). The rowlock beneath our windows and around a fair amount of our house had a lot of damaged brick needing to be removed and replaced. Our South and East walls had the most damage needing to be cut out and rebuilt. The faces of our brick were crumbling or popping off entirely and all visible damage was fixed, acid washed to assist in aging the brick for color matching purposes, and sealed. The majority of our house was also caulked by the owner as part of his services.

I found them honest and straightforward. The work I had in mind wasn't exactly covered in the Deal, nor was it absolutely necessary. I got a refund from Angie's List on the Deal instead.

I called him initially and that was one of the reasons I liked him. I had broken concrete on the back of my house where the cement slabs off the basement were broken off. He gave me a quote on that, but he said more importantly I have cracks in my foundation and I said no I didn't. He took a little hike around the house and he pointed out the places where the bricks were even spread apart & water could get in. I couldn't afford to do both. The concrete in the back had to break it up and removed & then put the cement again. He could have gotten more doing that, but he said what's more important that if I can't do both then I should do the foundation repair. I felt that was honest. He was very professional and a nice man. He was here every day himself. He said he just doesn't send out guys. He did a lot other work himself. I didn't have to pay anything until the job was finished and I was completely satisfied, so that was really good. He walked around with me when it was all done and made sure that I was happy with the job. I didn't price anyone else, but I felt it was fair.
Description of Work: Brick Concepts LLC came out and repaired the foundation.

I could see the flues at the top of my chimney were deteriorating badly, so I called BrickConcepts to perform the work. Their quote was competitive and detailed. Anthony was professional and courteous. The work was completed within the week, and looks very good. I am a satisfied customer.
Description of Work: Replaced chimney cap and flue. Tuck pointed minor cracks in mortar joints in chimney brickwork. Sealed (polyurethane) base of chimney to the porch. Replaced and mortared several fractured bricks at front corner of house. Mortar was colored to closely match original mortar color.

The sweep called ahead to let me know he was on his way, but would be about 15 minutes later than the scheduled appointment. He arrived at his new estimated time. He and his partner cleaned the chimney and inspected the exterior of the chimney, including the cap and top courses (on a two story house). He did a thorough job cleaning the fireplace area and scrubbed the interior of the chimney, at least at the lower level. He ensured the interior of the house did not get messy by laying tarps out neatly across the front of the fireplace, and by placing the vacuum outside the house, running the hose through an open window. This helped prevent any soot and ash from being blown around in the house. At the end of the cleaning, he showed me pictures of the top of the chimney which indicated deterioration of some of the chimney brick. He provided an estimate to repair the damaged brick in the chimney and other brick around the house as well as replacing the cap on the chimney. The estimate appears very reasonable, although I have not yet received another quote on the job. He did not pressure me to make a decision on that extra job. Overall he was very courteous, efficient and friendly. I recommended the business to my girlfriend and she had her chimney cleaned as well. In addition to cleaning the chimney he helped her fix a damper that was never installed correctly and not closing completely.

Some trouble getting timely responses, but there was a family issue for the one that was selling the service and taking down the details of the job. I was impressed that they came out to see the area first before making a decision on how they would approach the job. They did not have all the materials they needed on the first visit, so we made arrangements for them to return. They were concerned about too much cement dust that would spread in our basement, so they came back with dust shields and plastic to cover items and contain the dust. The patch work turned out great and the value was wonderful. Very pleased!

Brick Concepts came out and chipped out loose pieces and sealed the crack in the wall so well that I couldn't find it when it was finished. They also patched the floor crack with a high grade epoxy. It was a very professional job. However, there was another small crack not associated with their repair job which started to leak a little water when it rained, since I believe the water was looking for another way in. Brick Concepts came back out and sealed that crack along with others that could potentially cause problems. They didn't have to do this, since the new leak was not related to what they fixed the first time, they went beyond what would be a normal service call and didn't charge for coming out. I'm very happy with their work and would recommend Brick Concepts to anyone needing basement foundation or cement work.

Just to qualify my statements, this review is as much a review for the Angie's list "special deal" as it is for Brick Concepts. I bought the Angies list deal for $150 for $300 worth of work. I'm now convinced that thhe comapny bid was higher than it should have been to cover the amount that was suppose to be discounted. I did not get competive bids at the time, since I just purchased the "special deal". Later I got some bids from other masons to get an idea and I actually think I paid more than I should have. The BIG problem with Angies special deal is you get locked into that contractor. My strong advice is to get multiple bids before buying these deals. I likely WILL NOT renew with Angies list and I will ALWAYS get multiple bids in the future. Another lesson learned the hard way...... As far as the work goes these guys did ok, I just feel like I got duped...

Thank you for your review. We are very sorry you aren't happy with Angie's list although, it truly was a great deal! I understand your frustration, and can see how you would think you didn't receive your money's worth if you are going based off another person's price. I can't speak for any other bids you received, but can tell you that $150 for $300 worth of work, is a great deal. I'm sorry you felt locked in with us and Angie's list, and if you do decide to stay with Angie's list please know, you can always receive a refund if work has not yet been performed. Thank you and again we apologize. If there is anything Brick Concepts can do for you, please give us a call.

Very professional. When I called for an appointment/information I left a message. They called me back within 3-4 hours and made an appointment within a couple days. He explained the problem and the fix in laymens terms and the job was completed within a few hours. I definltely wound contact this company again for any brick/mortar work.
Description of Work: Went out of his way to help even though I was not in the area of most of their customers. I had water coming into the basement near a glass block window. They did grind out bad mortar joints where basement window was. Filled in ground out mortar joints with S-type mortar bonds and dye added. Cleaned out crack where cement meets home of all debris. Back-filled crack with S-type mortar bonds added. Injected self-leveling polyurethane in crack on top of mortar. Silicone above repaired basement window.

We had a difficult time connecting with the company to set up the appointment. However, once the communication hiccups were out of the way, everyone was professional. The sweep itself seemed pretty straightforward. This is my first fireplace, so I'm not sure how clean one can get a chimney. And I really appreciated their advice and recommendations on what to repair and when.

Very poor at returning calls. Finally connected. His firm was overwhelmed because of the offer. Claimed he should have only received 30 jobs from offer and actually received over 100, taxing his organization. Work was good. Then spent about 45 minutes going over house for potential masonry work. Never sent back an estimate.

The appointment was scheduled without delay, and the person who came was very prompt. However I don't think he was experienced enough to really provide a good assessment. I pointed out to him that there were thin cracks in the basement floor (concrete), and once I did that, the assessment was over. He gave us an estimate to fill the cracks--about $3000. The estimate seemed high so we got another opinion (also from an Angie's list supplier), who sent someone who has been in the business of making basements dry for 35+ years. He said that filling the cracks would do nothing until the underlying cause of the cracks is taken care of, which is, in his opinion, to have a larger sump pump installed. The estimate for this assessment was free; the sump pump, installed, was $650. And he said pump didn't rid the problem that we had a lot bigger problems than the cracks in the floor--the entire weeping system would have to be replaced. So my bottom line is, again, that I don't feel we received any "assessment" but that we paid for an estimate for probably the wrong solution.

I was not satisfied with the first visit by this company. After a phone call regarding my concern the business owner perfomed a professional inspection as stated in the Angie's List offer.
Description of Work: The owner came to my home and inspected the areas of my concern. (Water accumulation in the basement) This was the second inspection performed and was done as a complimentary gesture. He was prompt, cordial and spent approximately 2 1/2 hours determining where the leak in my basement originated. He e-mailed an estimate of work to be completed within a reasonable time.

Jordan was very personable, responsive and clearly knew what he was doing. The work was performed within two days of the date that the estimate was provided, which was great. When they arrived, they went to work and really did a job. They were good about explaining what they were doing along the way, pointing out what had been done incorrectly before (no surprise in this house) and the extent to which they could/could not correct matters. They really did basically rebuild the first set of steps. The pavers were terribly loose and the steps were a safety hazard. The work needed to be done. They did an excellent job overall. While they were waiting for mortar to set, they even pulled the weeds in the patio! The one thing that I was disappointed in - and I didn't discover this until a bit later when I was out cleaning around the edges of the patio and yard - was that they didn't do quite the job of cleaning up the chunks of mortar that I'd hoped they would do. I found chunks of mortar as far as 10 feet away from the work site and scattered around the perimeter of the patio.
Description of Work: The following is from the proposal and more or less reflects the work that was done. Primary Porch (Circular Steps) Rebuilt porch, relaying 50 - 100 pavers Cleared all old mortar off pavers to original form Relaid pavers in Type S mortar with special dye formula Whole porch ground out and filled with Type S Acid Washed Secondary Porch (Circular Steps) Relaid pavers near door: 2-6 pavers Tuckpointed whole porch, "cake bagged?" with Type S Mortar special dye formula 10-year warranty Total Bid: $1,700 - Angie's List $150 Coupon + $100 for Weatherguard Sealer, Diamond Coat = $1,650

Louis Pickner came out to tell me what they would do. I was concerned about my A/C unit, which sat right next to the work area. Louis assured me his workers could move it safely out of their way. We agreed that I would move plants that were growing in the beds that abutted the basement walls. The workers arrived on time. They reviewed with me what they were going to do. They did indeed safely move the A/C unit away from their working space. One thing they discovered was a pipe that came out 6 inches or so from the basement wall below ground level. (This wasn't visible from the inside.) They surmised that settling probably caused the pipe to produce a crack. The work required an extra day because they ran out of some necessary material. I was impressed that they came out the very next morning, which was a Sunday. I'm not sure if my grade of B for the price is fair or not, since I didn't get any other quote to compare it with. ( I wanted to stick with the same company that did the interior work a month or so prior to this.) It's just that $3300 is a lot of money to me. A couple of minor complaints: 1) The workers didn't put the A/C unit back closer to the house where they moved it from. 2) Louis expressed some mild distress about the distance from his company's base to my house. (They're in Royal Oak. I'm in Ann Arbor.) I felt a little bad for him. This is the only reason why I checked the box NO for "Would you use this company/individual again in the future?" I would probably use a company closer to home.
Description of Work: They dug down outside 8 feet at the affected corner of my house, 5 ft. across on the back side & 3 ft. across on the north side. They patched crack(s) on the walls with hydrocement and sealed the walls with 3 layers of 6 mil plastic and tar to create a protective membrane. They put in 3 ft of peat gravel and filled the rest of the hole with the remaining dirt. They gave me a 10-yr. warranty where the work was done.
