Functional Floors

Day one: Functional Floors arrived on time with a two person crew to sand the floors and apply one topcoat. Day two: one person returned to finish the topcoat

It went relatively well. Chris, the owner, was very responsive as to both his estimate and followup. The date was set several weeks in advance and the crews were timely. The selection of the stain color was relatively easy and the crew was patient as we tried to make the best selection. Although some holes from carpet tack strips were patched, many others were not and it wasn't clear if all holes and blemishes were to be corrected. Ultimately, the stain hid most of these and to be fair, we didn't request any resolution. However, I would suggest it be clarified in any future arrangement. Although we were somewhat prepared for the dust, dirt and disruption, I do believe anyone contemplating a significant job should probably not stay in the home during the process. Additionally, as I'm sure it is normal and common, the fumes from the polyurethane finish are very strong and linger for weeks. Finally, after the crew left, we noticed that their masking tape had left small blemishes on dark wallpaper which I attributed to cheap masking tape vs. using painters tape.

We decided we were not going to have the work done at all and canceled the deal.

Things went smoothly, I am very happy with my floors. We received the quote from Chris and soon after I scheduled to have our living room floors refinished. The job was done on time and the quality is great, also the quote was dead on! I enjoyed working with this company and will call the again.

Functional Floors removed staples and tack strips, sanded and refinished 4 bedrooms and a hallway. Professional and prompt service, showed up on time for quote and work. Final bill matched my quote to the penny. The worked fast and did a very nice job. I would use them again.

Would highly recommend Functional Floors. We had three different companies give us estimates on refinishing our wood floors and decided on Functional Floors. The salesman explained the process and was not pushy at all. They had an itemized contract so we knew the price of each step. Before starting, the Supervisor, Matt, explained everything they were going to do and why. Never having wood floors before, they gave us plenty of tips on maintaining the floors. They even fixed some items they noticed as they worked in each room. They were punctual and let us know what time they would arrive and leave each day so we could plan accordingly.

They visited the home, measured, and gave a firm estimate, which ended up being the final price. The scheduled it about a month out and called before to remind and where there on time. We did get a hotel room for a couple days, due to the smell which seemed ok after 2 nights away. (we opened the windows for a few days, just to get all the smell out, but now it is fine after doing that. They cleaned up nicely when done. The price was excellent and they did all that they say that they would. I would recommend with my highest confidence, that these guys do a great job at a nice price

Chris and his crew did a great job. They came on time and did a great job. I am very happy with my floors and would highly recommend this company.

We were pleased with the work. We were initially told that ours would be a two (maybe three) day job, but in the end, it took about two weeks (part of the delay was our fault as was had out-of-town travel during the install), but the workers were at our house the better part of 5 days. When they came out to install the shoe molding, it had been stained the wrong color, which caused a further delay. But Chris and his finish man tried very hard to make sure we were satisfied, and we were. The price was much better than the other companies that came out to give us an estimate. We utilized a coupon on Angie's list that saved us quite a bit of money.

Representatives/workers from Functional Flooring, Matthew and John, arrived on Monday, and told me that the work would be completed by Wednesday. They tore out the carpet and padding on Monday, and placed it in their truck. They tore up parts of the linoleum near the carpeted area, but left 90% of it intact. Matthew told me that they would have to place 3/8" plywood over the cement flooring in our living room, dining room and kitchen,, which would add to the cost. He also reported to me that his company would be using a different flooring material than quoted - a pre-finished wood (Columbian beacon oak) because of issues related to the added plywood depth to the flooring. The work was completed on Friday, November 16. My wife and I are very pleased with the results, despite the changes listed above, and the added costs.

It went well. Functional Floors is very punctual, professional and efficient. In spite of the fact that they were dealing with new hardwood and old hardwood, the fininished job looked as if everything was finished with the same wood at the same time. The job would have been completely perfect except for the fact that I had to call them back to finish the molding installation. Also, in a couple areas, if you look closely, you can detect some waviness in the sanding. However, on the hole, I am happy

Really nice guys, however, problematic repair. One board replacement was split lengthwise when it was put in. It was left in with damage to the board next to it. It was filled in with sticky putty that never dried. This was eventually corrected and we are now pleased with that repair. The finish started out good, but some problem occurred between the second and third coat, many many hairs were brushed onto the floor. They came back and resanded and revarnished the third coat, however there were still hairs left in the varnish. The guys were willing to come back again but I chose to sand out the last hairs and refinish the spots myself. The owner was very accommodating, adjusted the price and gave me some extra varnish to complete the repair. The floor looks better now. I was really reluctant to say anything, however, its probably important to comment that the little repair jobs should be as important as the big repair jobs.

As we defined the scope of work, Mr. Franklin designed the the project so that it was scalable, lending itself to a phased implementation (which is ultimately what we opted for). The specificatons were some of the most precise I've ever seen produced (and it was free). Mr. Franklin went out of his way to insure that the work performed was minimally intrusive to our coming-and-going. Towards this end his workman arrived very early in the morning and was extremely efficient. While the work was in processThe floor was in worse condition than we had anticipated; the craftsman took it all in stride (it was a lot of extra work, accomplished with hand tools so as not to further damage the floor). He worked straight through - not even stopping for lunch - and finished the job on time. By the time my Family returned, the cleanup was accomplished and the first coat of sealant had dried. The final product blends seemlessly with the other flooring, although the superior quality of the work done by Functioal Flooring is evident. Agaim, the job produced much more debris than anticipated, but clean-up was not a problem. Everyone was extremely courteous, professional and accomodating.

Our kitchen hardwood floor was old and dull. Saw the ad from Functional Floors, read reviews and wanted to give them a try. Chris from functional floors came, took the measurements and scheduled the work. We had to completely remove everything from the kitchen ahead of time to allow their staff to perform the work (sanding and refinishing). It took two days by two staff members to complete the work. Very professional and friendly people. We were told not to enter the kitchen for the clear coat to dry and settle for two days.. so we used our kitchen in the basement. Both me and my wife had headahces from the strong odor. Took couple of days for the odor to subside. Had to keep the windows and doors open. Our kitchen floor looks brand new now. It was a bit of inconvenience, but well worth it. We are extremely happy with the quality of work and professionalism by Functional Floors- from start to finish. Very reliable and friendly staff. I would strongly recommend them to anyone.

They were friendly, courteous, punctual and returned calls promptly. The job was performed exactly as promised and I was extremely satisfied. The crew that put the varnish on the second day even taped up plastic around the rooms so that my baby wouldn't be subjected to any fumes (although the product they used had minimal fumes anyway). I would highly recommend them and will call them again in the future if I need any other work done.

The job looks good compared to the condition of the floors before, but that's to be expected. I'm disappointed in the attention to detail. Obvious swirl marks, where the wood grain is straight, sanding debris not completely cleared before polyurethane was applied esp in the kitchen. But in FF's defense, the guy in charge of the completed job said he'd come back out and redo the kitchen.

The contact person, Chris, was very helpful and responsive. He came out soon after I called, we set a date, and the work was done exactly as promised. The floor looks beautiful. Chris called the day after they finished to make sure I was happy with the work. I would definitely use them again!

Everything went beautifully. The staff was punctual, courteous, professional. The process was explained to me. They did what they said what they would do. Required two visits.

They were good. They were prompt fair and clean. My floor looks good as well. They fixed it up well. I will be using them in the future.

I was very satisfied with the work. The workers were very polite and professional. They were also timely. The only con was a lot of dust from the work. They provided a good price and we had an Angie's List coupon.

We hired Functional Floors for a home that we are "flipping". Chris was very prompt ,professional and effecient. I was well informed every step of the process and the crew called to tell us when they arrived at the home. Most importantly the results were amazing! He transformed our floors from old and nasty into beautiful hardwood! We already want him to bid on our next job. Also what I liked about him was that he came to look at the job and you could meet him. We almost went with Wilson's because of good ratings but Wilson's didn't want to come and look at the job , he just gave us a quote over the phone. I like to meet the person that will be doing the job and will be in my home .

Positives: Calls and messages are returned promptly. The team shows up when they say they will show up. The price was competitive. They make a genuine attempt to resolve issues and concerns.Needs Improvement: My biggest issue was attention to detail and quality. I am a detail-oriented person and readily admit that I have high expectations on quality. I was not happy with the quality of my floors. There were plenty of areas where the floors look beautiful, but several other areas where they do not. I have areas where there are circular sanding scratches - most noticeably on my stairs. There are areas where sanding dust is under the polyeurethane which creates small bumps (you cannot see these from standing position, but if you feel the floor or look at it from an angle in light they are visible). On my new floors, they used more face nails than I would expect on a hardwood installation. One 1' X 4' area had 23 nails set through the face of the boards. These nail holes were not properly filled and sanded flush prior to staining and poly coating. Overall: Chris was very prompt on dealing with issues and usually professional. He tried to satisfy the quality issues by going back to fill the holes, rebuffing and adding another coat of polyeurethane (at no additional cost). From my perspective, the only way to really resolve the issues would be to resand and refinish, and the nailing issues can only be resolved by removing the boards and reinstalling. In the end, I believe Chris probably would take whatever steps are necessary to satisfy my concerns, but my time and patience was up. We had a deadline to move into our house. We could not go through the process all over again. It is my opinion that they lack a detailed quality management process/system, where routine inspection of the work being done is reviewed thoroughly to prevent issues like I experienced.

My floor is absolutely beautiful. II would definitely use them again. The staff was professional. We did have a problem with coordinating times because of my schedule, but the end result was worth it. I have more floors to get done and will call them again.

Upon meeting Chris for the estimate I found him to be professional and courteous. Chris is very knowledgable about floors and took the time to educate myself and my girlfriend. After receiving multiple estimates from businesses on Angies List, I decided to go with Functional Floors for a few reasons. Despite the friendliness of other companies, some quotes were double almost triple the price of Chris. In addition, none of the others took as much time educating us on the process of refinishing floors.One thing I would advise if using Functional Floors is Chris does supervise multiple teams of people completing jobs. Thus, he may not be present during the time the job is being completed unless requested. But overall, I was pleased with his crew and job that they did. I would definately recommend him.
