Before I bought this home, the county had required that the bank that owned this home put in a larger septic and drain field than the original one. That was because the prior owners had made an extraordinarily large addition to the home. It used to be a size of 1200 sq feet, three-bed room ranch that is now 6000 finished sq feet, six-bedroom house. They went from a bath and a half to four and a half bath. They added a wet bar in the basement with flooding water and so forth. So, the water and the waste capacity for this house jumped significantly. The county therefore required that a larger waste system needs to be put in which was done before I bought this house. When we bought this house, we were the initial users of this brand new septic system. We were in the house for four months and the system backed up into my house and did $40,000 worth of damage in the basement, which is the fault of another contractor. It is four days to Christmas and there is sewage sewing to the lower level of my house into a beautifully finished basement. It was like running into an outhouse; it was a horror. There was water pouring out of walls and I was in a panic. I threw open the yellow pages and the first plumber that I found was the one with the biggest add and the biggest pipe and given what was happening, I was in no mood to quibble. The number that I dialed turned out to be of Michigan Plumbing Inc. I learnt subsequently that there are here in Lansing and that they do a lot of television advertisements. They are a very prominent presence here in town. They work they did was excellent. The people they sent were very fine; I had no problems. During this period of time that my insurance was putting the bill of what they did, I was extremely happy with them. However, when all this damage was done downstairs and when I was having it put back together, I decided to put in some upgrades. One of the upgrades was to take this very nice wet bar and make it into a separate full kitchen in my home. I had issues with the plumbing on the water line to the icemaker in the refrigerator. To fix it, what they had to do was to run about a 10x4 rubber hose and put it in. There were no walls so they had to hook up a copper fitting at one end to cut into the waterline and put in a copper fitting at the other end to make a connection that went into the icemaker. They had to run a rubber hose or a plastic hose in between. One of the people who work for me even drilled the holes for the hose to go through. So all they had to do was put the copper fittings in and run the plastic hose. They charged me $311 to do that. I frankly felt ripped. That was an upgrade for me and my insurance did not cover that like the other work they did for me. That came out of my own pocket. They were in my house doing all that work and it was my fault that I did not ask them how much it would cost to run the hose into the icemaker. I just requested them to put in the little hose while they were down working in the basement and they said they surely would do so. At that time, my insurance company was paying them directly for the restoration work and so I asked them to write me up a separate bill, which they did. When I saw $311, I just about had a heart failure. The cost of the parts for the work that they did could not have been more than $25 and they were already in the house; they didn’t have to make a special house call to do this. I felt ripped. The price was unbelievable. They are extraordinarily expensive. They have a very nice website and they ask for feedback there. So I went online and wrote something about the work they had done for me and that particular piece of it was way overpriced. I wrote that on a weekend. Even though it was a weekend I got an immediate reply back saying that they were sorry I was not happy and that they were going to have the person who dealt with me call me back during the business hours. I never got a call back. I sent a second email after two or three weeks later with the name of the representative, that was supposed to get in touch with me in the first place. I never heard from them again. By that time, they had finished the insurance work in my house and they were gone. I did not follow it up again. I was having trouble with a shower in my house when they were here. I could not get hot water, no matter how long I ran it. I requested them to look at that while they were working in my basement. They took apart the shower controller and told me that I needed a new cylinder in there. He told me that he does not have the part in the truck and ordered a new piece of equipment that will help him extract the one that is in there. I have a very expensive stone shower. While extracting the broken piece in the shower with this new piece of equipment, he told me that was no chance of him to crack the stonework on the floor of the shower room. He told me that if it cracks, there is no guarantee that I will be able to match it. I appreciated all of that, maybe he was just blowing smoke, I don’t know. It would have been a long wait and by that time, they had finished with the icemaker for me so I did not have him back because his price to fix the cylinder in the shower was $300. That to me was very high. Expect for their price I had absolutely no quibble with anything they did. They were fine but their prices were very high. Everything else they were wonderful with. When all this happened, I was astounded to have sewage pouring into my house and we had no idea why. As it turned out the contractor, who had installed this system had installed a diverter valve, which is a mechanism that allowed them to turn the valve and redirect the sewage flow from the old to the new sewage system. This is an underground valve. The new contractor put in the valve but never turned it. He installed the system for $19000 and he never turned it on which caused the failure and caused the $40000 worth of damage in my home. When this happened, to figure out why this happened we had to have backhoe‘s come out and dig up my yard. I had to vacate the premises to a hotel. I did not get back to the house from the hotel early in the morning when the backhoe’s came in. I had spoken to the plumbing team before hand and had told them that I will get a camera if I reached first but if I couldn’t I had requested them to bring a camera to photograph and document everything because I might need it for insurance purposes. To their credit, they did. They photographed and documented the failure of the previous contractor who had not properly set the diverter valve. They wrote out the report and they included their filling with the reason why it had failed. That helped me significantly in my entire insurance process and it enabled my insurance company to go through what is called subrogation to get paid back by the contractor’s insurance policy because he was one who was at fault. My insurance paid me $40000 so that they can turn around and recover that money. It happened based on the fact that Michigan Plumbing Inc did an excellent job of documenting the cause of all of these difficulties. In terms of professionalism, they were. The quality of how they wrote this up was excellent. They did a terrific job. I would call them in a minute if it were an insurance job, because they were great. They were responsive. They were professional. They answered questions. Their work has been outstanding. If I were paying them upfront for a small thing to be done with plumbing in my house, I would not call them at all because I know that their price would be very high. I could get that done by somebody else for less money. If one does not mind paying the fee for a really good company then use them. If you are price conscious, go somewhere else.
Description of Work: I used Michigan Plumbing Inc in April. I had sewage pouring into my new house that had to be fixed. They also did a few other plumbing related works for me while they were in the house.

Thank you for your comments. I would like to explain the reason our prices are at the level they are and the reason we stand out from our competition. We arrive at our prices based on what it costs us to stay in business. Michigan Plumbing has been around for over twenty years and we want to be here for many years to come so that we may service the needs of our customers. We do background checks and drug testing of all our employees to ensure a safe experience for our customers. We have a “Code of Ethics” that is closely followed and puts the customer first. We arrive in marked trucks, in uniform and are licensed and insured. Our phones are always answered by a “live” person and we are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. These items all add to the cost of a job and should be figured when seeking a reputable plumbing company. Please consider this when comparing our prices with the prices of other companies. Michigan Plumbing does not charge a “trip charge” so an estimate can be acquired for absolutely no cost to you. Also, our prices do not go up if we come out in the evening, on the weekend or even on a holiday. You are definitely in the right place as Angie’s List only accepts companies that are reputable, prescreened and licensed if required. Thank you for reading and happy shopping. They say that there is no extra charge for coming out after hours but I think $500 for a new sump pump is excessive. If I had to, I would use them again in the future.

The quality of work was excellent, but they were a little expensive compared to some of the competitors. They were very prompt. They came out right at the estimate and performed the work. The competition couldn't respond as quickly, and I needed it done. The work was very satisfactory. I had a contractor here working on it. The crew of Michigan Plumbing came out and did the job very quickly. That's what I needed. Everything is holding up well. There were no complications. I am very pleased with the work. I would definitely get an estimate and input from them in the future.

They were very quick and professional. Two plumbers worked for 2 hours to complete the job. The job was not cheap. I was quoted a price before the job and I agreed to it. Since I rarely undertake jobs like this one, I don't know if my price on the high side or not.

We had what we suspected was a leaky water heater vessel or pipe. Had Michigan Plumbing come out to do an analysis and to give us an estimate of replacement - if need be. The water heater - a Bradford White 50 gallon unit - is still under warranty for replacement - not labor.Service rep. said it was indeed a leak, that the unit would need to be repaired. Estimated cost - $1000 for 2 hours. Why? Primarily because he needed to route venting to the chimney. It is currently venting outside. I suspected this was an outrageous overcharge, partly because we believed it could still be vented outside, and that the fitting to the unit was still good.Acting on our suspicion we called the ORIGINAL installer - an authorized B-W installer/dealer - who confirmed that it needed replacement. His estimated labor cost is $200. The current vent will be used. In fact, he said that venting to the chimney would be dangerous ... furnace is already using it.Not only do I believe Michigan Plumbing presumed to reroute vent without considering the cheaper (and current) option, what they were proposing would be a hazard.

Thank you for reporting this Member. After a careful and through investigation with the technician and the paperwork, I found a few things that did not make sense. Under warranty, the water heater would be a direct “swap out”; meaning the same vent, gas line and water lines would be used. Our technician has no recollection of speaking with you about re-routing the vent. I think there was some miscommunication on our part with this particular job. The price was over estimated and Scott, the technician, called to correct that. Understandably, no one returned our call. I apologize for the handling of this job and hope that you will try us again in the future. Bryan Buckhave Operations Manager/Owner

Two or three weeks after Michigan Plumbing installed a new sump pump it quit working and our basement flooded again. They replaced the pump but refused to take any responsibility for the flood. We had another plumber install a back up pump and he found the reason our pump quit working. The sump was full of rocks which should have been cleaned out by the plumber from Michigan Plumbing. Because of the plumber's negligence our basement flooded and we incurred the loss. Michigan Plumbing avoided most of our phone calls. An assistant kept promising that the owner would call but he never did. A lower level worker finally called us back and told us they determined it was the pump manufacturers fault and decided they were not responsible.
Description of Work: Needed an emergency sump pump. They were responsive and came within one or two hours. We had a brand new sump pump installed.

Response from Michigan Plumbing Inc
When we arrived at this job on April 27, the customer told us that his basement had flooded due to a failed sump pump that was installed by another company. We installed a new sump pump at a discounted rate, and tested the pump for proper operation. When the technician left the property, the pump was operating as normal. We received a call on May 29th and were informed that the pump we installed was not working and their basement was wet. We returned to the property, inspected the pump, and found it operating as normal. On May 6th we received another call from this customer and we were told that they were not convinced that the pump was working and wanted a replacement. As a courtesy and at our expense we replaced the properly working sump pump, with a brand new sump pump. We left the existing pump at the property for any future inspection that may be needed. Shortly after that the customer told us that he wanted us to pay $5600.00 for repairs to the wet basement. We explained that the pump was working when it was originally installed, it was working when we returned and could be tested today and would be working. We could not turn this into our insurance as it would be insurance fraud. Any number of reasons could have caused a power failure, which would render the pump useless until power was restored. The customer told us if we were not going to pay, he would drag our names through the dirt. I would hope our reports previous to this one would speak for themselves as to our commitment to our customers and our ethics. We have 100% customer satisfaction and live by a code of ethics that we take very seriously. Thank you for reading our response to this report. Bryan Buckhave Operations Manager/Owner

Easy to get an appointment and change it at the last minute. I had to change the appointment twice. First time was on me, second time was because they were going to arrive 15 minutes past their 2 hour time window and I couldn't wait that long. They rescheduled for later that day and arrived in the time window. Respected our home by wearing booties over shoes before he came in, but didn't keep them on, I guess because he wasn't making a mess. Cleaned up like he'd never been there. Finished the work in one day and did it well. Communication was a little slow in person, but to me the work is more important for a plumber to get right. Didn't have the part in the van, so went to the shop and came back promptly. Only had PVC, which we accepted, but he didn't understand why I preferred to reduce use of PVC for health and environmental benefits. Accepted our Angies list coupon verbally, which was nice.

No complaints. A bit more than I expected but that's often the case and it could have been much worse.
Description of Work: Took care of a drain back up in the kitchen and laundry room. Checked our septic tank to ensure it was not full and working properly. Gave us a product to help avoid future problems. The men were nice.
this is a company that is on call 24/7 I looked at their webpage, and sent an e-mail on Sunday. Jo answered my e-mail, telling me they would contact me on Monday. They did and set up an appointment for Monday between 10-12. Tom 102 arrived shortly after 10:00 am. There were 3 possibilities that was the cause of my water in the basement. after running his camera though the line, etc. came upon the plug in the line to the septic tank. All went well until the "back spash" that was caused by the line opening (I guess) up until this time there was no smell of septic tank water. We discovered this as Tom was getting his things around to leave. Water dirty or clean goes where it wants to (under file cabinets, etc) I have been moving and cleaning with strong bleach water ever since to get the smell out of the basement. I am sure that this does not come under the plumbers duties.
Description of Work: When my washing machine emptied, I ended up with water on the basement floor. I called Michigan Plumbing because of the glowing reports from other Angieslist members. The young man that came to my house worked at solving my problem. The line from the house to the septic tank was the problem. He cleared the line, and I should be o.k. for sometime. He suggested that I use a line cleaner monthly. (Rid-X,etc.) after this experience, that reminder will be on my calander. I hope not to need a plumber in my future, but if I do. I will call this company. They have the equipment to take care of any problem, and their people in the office and field are easy helpful

Our sump pump had malfunctioned and had failed to shut off automatically. This was my first contact with a plumber and I am pleased with their service. Michigan Plumbing scheduled a service call promptly at a time that was convenient for us. We were called when the service person was en-route and "Chris" arrived timely. He inspected our pump, cleaned out the pump well, which had gravel/debris in it that likely had caused the malfunction. I had little knowledge of how a sump pump works prior to the call and he thoroughly explained how it functions and the different types of pumps used. They did not try to sell us anything additional and I felt they are reputable. I was also pleased that they are available 24/7 with no additional charges for calls during any time period. Based on my first experience with them, they definitely will be the plumber I call on again.

I had an leaking outside tap that was turning into an iceberg during a long cold spell this winter. Found them through AL and had them come over for a consultation. Well, they were a bit off in their arrival estimate. Dispatcher originally told me between 1-3pm, they eventually came around 6pm. Not a big deal to me, and I know it's not anyones fault. Scott was very helpful even though we had a big snow storm rolling in. He ended up replacing the inside shut off valve on the spot and was in and out in less than an hour. Overall, I'd say it was a good experience, and the AL $30 off coupon didn't hurt either!

The project took about 1.5 hours. The plumber was very professional and took to the task quickly. I had printed out a angies list coupon but did not get to use the discount because the job was quoted at a lower copper pipe repair price ($315) than a steel pipe fix price ($425). Michigan plumbing does quality and professional work but at a premium price. I think this is a premium price based on other Lansing professional plumber whom we usually use but could not come out on a Saturday.
Description of Work: Problem with a copper to steel pipe connection - approximate length of 1 meter. The connection was leaking without any hope of Home Depot solution. I had to fix the connection if I didn't want to whole basement to flood.

Tom arrived on time, put booties on his shoes, listened to my description of the problem and asked some more questions to clarify in his mind what was going on. He explained the price possibilities dependent on what he found, explained what he would do to find the problem then brought in the video camera to examine the lines. He found a partial clog in the drain line under the basement floor, cleared the clog and left the work area as clean as it was before. All this was done inside an hour and was accomplished through a clean-out in the corner of the basement. Tom is a role model employee and this company is definitely the company to take of your plumbing needs.

We undertook a complete "gut job" on our old ugly lime-green tiled bathroom. We hoped to remove our old cast iron tub and replace it with a shower (with glass doors), but didn't know if the tub could be removed since it was so large and our halls are narrow. Michigan Plumbing showed up on time for their appointment to give us an estimate and told us there was "no problem" removing the tub. Their estimate for the job (which also involved jackhammering through the concrete floor under the tub to move the location of the drain, as well as installing new shower hardware and two under-mounted sinks) was very reasonable. They arrived right on time for their work. They were not only prompt but also cheerful and professional. They covered our carpets from the bathroom to the front door to protect them. We really didn't believe they would be able to easily remove the tub, but they had it sawed up and removed in no time. They completed the rest of their work in the same manner. The final bill was within their estimate, even though the concrete floor presented a few more challenges than they expected. We were more than satisfied and will certainly use this business again.
Description of Work: First they removed an old cast iron bath tub and the plumbing associated with it. Then they moved the drain to another, more central location (this involved cutting into a solid concrete slab). They also installed a new shower head. Finally, they installed two undermounted sinks in a granite countertop, along with new faucets. This involved installing new drain pipes under the sinks as well.

The is definately not the company to use. We had an emergency they were the only one who came and we feel we ended up being taken for a ride. They knew we were in an emergency. Even though they said that certain work should be done even though it wasn't needed they scared my partner into thinking it was necessary. Then there was another thing they scared her into thinking had to be done. And when the third thing came up we fired them. We then shopped around for a new plumber to come in and finish cleaning up the mess they made. Come to find out Michigan Plumbing over charged us twice what EVERYONE ELSE was charging. And twice what they themselves normally charge. So, a 6,000 dollar job turned into a 12,000 job.

During the customer’s emergency, our technician responded to this customer’s call. Our technician was able to get the customer out of a state of emergency, advising them this was a city meter issue and shutting off the main water supply. We charged zero to go out, assess the situation, and shut off the water supply. 10 days later the customer called us back because their mainline was plugged. Our technician assessed the situation and after careful diagnosing, determined the mainline needed to be replaced in the yard. Our technician returned the next day at the customer’s request to perform approved work to replace the sewer line from the house to the city, replace all water lines in the entire house, replace water heater, and pull all required permits. This process took over 2 days to perform with 2 plumbers on the job. Actual cost was NOT $12,000.00 but instead $7,071.00. Michigan Plumbing has all documentation signed and approved by the customer. This process was over a 17 day period from start to finish with the technician getting customer approval every step of the process. We do not use “High Pressure” or “Scare tactics”. We specialize in emergency type work, we know how to respond and have the knowledge and resources to handle them quickly and with little down time or inconvenience to the customer. Our customers are under no obligation when we arrive at the job site; we assess the situation and present the best options. This customer was under no obligation, approved all work throughout the entire process, and never once called our office to inform us they were unhappy with the service they received. Our company lives by a strict code of ethics and we have a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee. We make every effort to resolve issues customers have with our service, the only way we can address issues is when the customer calls us to inform us. This customer never informed us. If a customer signs the invoice and does not communicate with the technician or our office, how are we to know a customer is dissatisfied, especially one that has us return for multiple issues. Again, yes we did respond to their emergency, and did not charge them to assist them in that matter. So I am confused as to how we “took them for a ride” when we came out, advised them to call the city and did not charge them. If they were not happy with how we assisted them (when no one else would come out), why did they continue to call us for service and approve all UP FRONT PRICES? Hopefully, as a prospective customer reading this you will come away knowing we do not charge to come out and assess the situation, and give all prices up front with no obligation to the customer. We are a company that cares about our customers and feel it is important for you to hear the documented side of the story. Bryan Buckhave Operations Manager/Owner

Great! They came promptly for an estimate when our regular company would not respond. Did the work on the Friday of Memorial day weekend as asked, even though they were a little short handed with the holiday coming up. Technician was very careful to pinpoint the location before cutting into our dining room wall. Explained everything and qanswered questions. Asked if I had any breathing problems before cutting the stack and sent me upstairs out of harm's way - my spouse was able to stay. Finished the job in good time. And cleaned up thoroughly. Very professional. We called them on the recommendation of one of my clients. They will our regular plumbers from now on.
Description of Work: Remove leaking main soil stack from 2nd floor to basement in a 97 year old home.

I needed water pipes repaired and this company showed up within two hours after my call. The plumber was friendly courteous, and helpful. He did a professional job in discovering and repairing my broken pipes, and all for a flat fee!! He also took the time to give me on site estimates for future updates to my system. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: Found breaks in plumbing, repaired, replaced as needed. Checked pump and recommended repair.

Other than the annoyance of them not coming at the agreed-upon time and not calling ahead saying they were delayed, their service was the same as usual -- great. After rescheduling after the fact, they provided an advance call indicating they were on their way and provided an estimated time of arrival. On arrival, the plumber introduced himself, explained what he was going to do, and went through the house evaluating the plumbing. He pointed out specific areas of concern and explained what some minor problems were. He also provided information regarding short-term vs long-term fixes, provided guidance on a couple of minor items, and explained where his company could do specific work as well. The discounts that are part of the MI Plumbing annual service plan have made it worthwhile for me over the past year -- and the annual checkup is a nice addition to this service plan. As with past service, I was pleased with their work, although it was more of a physical checkup as opposed to fixing anything.
Description of Work: Annual plumbing inspection per service contract. Evaluated every faucet, drain, and pipes for soundness. Prepared report of findings.
