Since they never responded to my calls, I ended up hiring a competitor, who came and removed the tree the same day in under an hour. Kalamazoo Tree Service really missed out on some easy money - the tree was basically uprooted and just needed to be cut a few times and then hauled away. Too bad they aren't professional enough to return a phone call.
Description of Work: I had a tree fall on my house and called Kalamazoo Tree Service 3 times over the course of a week to come and remove the tree. They never responded to my phone calls.

We were looking to have a tree in our front yard with limbs hanging close to our roof and power lines trimmed along with a very large silver maple tree in our backyard cleaned up. We called to get a quote from Kalamazoo Tree Service and James came out to our house the next day. He was very knowledgeable and had a vision for how he could improve the look and quality of our trees. On the day of our appointment there was a rainstorm, I was at work and came home at lunch to find the work already finished and our trees beautifully transformed! I was in awe of how different our trees (and our house!) looked! They left our yard very clean, there was virtually no debris on the ground, only tiny wood shavings here and there and a few very small twigs. My neighbor who was home at the time they were working was amazed at how quickly and efficiently they worked, in a thunderstorm no less! I will not hesitate to recommend this company to any and all who are searching for a tree service, we will most definitely be using them again should the need arise.

James and his men did an excellent job for me at a great price. Friendly and congenial they took down the spruce in pieces and removed all the debris. They limbed 3-4 hardwoods and removed all that debris too. Ground the spruce stumps and returned all the soil. Excellent work! I couldn't be happier. See them next summer for more of the same!

The five men were cordial, polite, and aimed to please. Before they started, we went around and verified the work to be done. We had 3 small trees and 2 larger trees removed. In addition, they trimmed three other trees . We had a tall stump of a tree which was not included in the agreement of work but they asked if we would like it removed. We agreed and they took it out without extra cost. We also had some roots and branches in the back which they agreed to remove which was not in the original agreement. They hauled away all the wood and branches and ground all six of the stumps. When they were finished they had us check everything to make sure that they did not miss anything. The work required eight hours. We paid by check. Their policy is not to enter the house, even to use the bathroom. They did an excellent job. We are very satisfied with their work and the price.

James came out and gave estimate the same day I called to request one. We agreed on price, a date was scheduled to do the work. Crew assembled on that day, though there seemed to be a lack of communication and some discord regarding duties. James was very nice and he did apologize for this once the job was completed. The trees were taken down efficiently and quickly, despite the fact that the power lines ran through the middle of the trees. The climber was amazing to watch and did an exceptional job. In 2 hours the trees were cut down, removed and my yard was cleaned up. The trees were on the edge of my property next to the street, making it easy to haul them away. I was asked if I wanted the wood but I didn't, so they removed it. The grinding of the stump was to be done on another day by a different member of his team. Communication was not the best about when that would be done or how to make payment. The stump was ground within a week but a hole was left, which concerned me since it was located right next to the road and could have been a safety hazard to those walking by. Once the stump was ground down, it took a call to James to find out when someone would be come to fill it in and finish cleaning up the site. I feel he should have been made aware when the stump was done to know when to come and finish the job. It did look great once it was done though. I am very pleased with the results of the job, but communication could have been better along the way regarding the stump grinding, timing of final clean up and how to make payment. However, I will use this service again for future tree service needs. Plus, they had a 10% off coupon online, making it more affordable for me.

Overall.... it was satisfactory. I would hire them again. Mainly because they are competitive in their price, eager, friendly, and willing to accommodate. They will succeed IF they keep their customer satisfaction, "customer first" attitude. They are a young, hard working company that I hope survives.
Description of Work: Owner (cannot remember his name) showed up promptly to give an estimate. I had received 2 other estimates and his personal interest in doing the job and stating that "everything would be done to your satisfaction" was impressive in addition to his price. He said that the job would be finished in a week from start to finish and it would be left as good or better than when they arrived. All limbs, debris, and damaged ground would be completed before they accepted the final payment. They took down 3 trees, ground out two stumps, took away all the brush and left the yard very clean. Two workers were extremely friendly and worked until the job was done. I think it was after 6 or 7 pm and they arrived before noon. (Stumps were done at a later date.) They were great guys! Very friendly and great to work with. They were working under extremely hot circumstances during the 80-90 degree days in June. They did clean up all debris. However..... the owner said the job would be completed within a week and the stumps were not removed for a couple weeks after the initial job. And, there were some pretty deep ruts left from the falling trees. When I asked the workers about that they said that someone would be coming back to fill those in. But when I talked to the owner about those a week or so later, he replied, "would you mind doing that?" or something to that effect. As my husband doesn't mind doing that we did it ourselves. But.... I would have expected them to come back, fill the ruts, and reseed if needed. I am a small business owner myself, and at the cost, and overall job, I would hire them again regardless of these issues. I think they are a young company and may need some time to iron out all these details. 1. Do get specific on what you want done and completed. 2. Do get a timeline if you need it done in a specific amount of time.

James came by June 14 to look at five trees I needed removed: two 60 ft pines, one 80 ft black cherry, one 80 ft pine and a one tulip tree. He gave me a fair and competitive estimate ($1000 total) for removing the five trees and grinding away the stumps. He also suggested that I remove a large branch from a tree that was hanging over our roof. He was able to start work the next week and he called the night before to confirm the start date and time. He parked a trailer at the side of our property to haul away limbs and debris. He accommodated my request to not park or drive over our septic drain field. His trailer and truck left no impressions on the lawn where he was able to park. He cut down four of the trees (all from the top down) by climbing and removing them in sections, with ropes and rigging to guide each section's decent. This left the ground surrounding the trees free of any impact marks from free falling debris. The fifth tree was small enough to be guided to the ground with ropes. Kalamazoo Tree Service used four employees to accomplish the work and all worked safely and professionally to complete the work. A separate employee came by to grind down the stumps. James came back a couple of days after the work was completed to inspect the work and to make sure we were satisfied with the work that was done. We reported that we were entirely satisfied with the quality of the work and the professionalism demonstrated on the day the work was performed. In short great job, reasonable pricing, professional, and punctual!
Description of Work: Kalamazoo Tree Service removed 5 trees (all 60 ft in height or greater) removed brush and debris, ground stumps and neatly stacked cut wood on the back of our property. All trees were brought down safely and with no damage to our property or to the existing landscaping.

He called and came over later in the day to provide an estimate. The tree was taken down in 1/2 a day and then a couple of days later someone else came and ground the stump down.
Description of Work: James responded by phone and then showed up very promptly to provide an estimate. Then part of the tree fell before our agreed upon date. He came over and cleaned it up as part of the project. Very professional. All of the work was completed as expected. The stump was ground up and there are no tracks left in the yard from any machinery. I was able to watch as the climbers took down the tree and it's quite a feat. Not an easy job...but well done.

The job went well without the use of heavy equipment. They were able to climb the trees safely and lower the cut limbs at the rear of the property without coming the near the tool shed ... a big plus. The clean-up was complete and satisfactory with all branches, logs etc removed from the property. Stump grinding occurred several days later. James came out and restored the area where the stumps were removed allowing for later addition of soil and reseeding. James and his crew were very efficient and left the yard and adjacent properties clean and void of branches etc. James and his crew did everything he promised and followed up to make sure the work was to my satisfaction. I intend to give this company an opportunity to do further tree work and trimming if the need arises.
Description of Work: The extent of service involved the removal/clean-up and stump removal of two pine trees and the clean up and removal of overhanging tree branches at the rear of the property. The branches were large, damaged by wind storms and could cause major damage to a tool shed at the rear of the property. I had two other estimates which were higher. The reason I chose this company was, Angie's list ratings, price, honored the discount coupon, responsiveness and was able to schedule the job within a week. James was very profession and discussed the details of the work to be performed. Do use Angie's List as as guide, get additional estimates and do not look at price alone.

3 of the trees we had trimmed were large and 1 was small. The smaller tree & one large one only needed light trimming, but the other 2 needed more extensive trimming. We set a date, but Jim had to postpone about a week due to weather & work load. Jim did call and let us know ahead of time and we rescheduled. Waiting wasn't a problem since we had indicated we were flexible. The tree trimmer and 2 other workers came on the day we had rescheduled. They were very polite and cleaned up our yard and the neighbors yard where some of the branches had to fall. We had talked to our neighbor ahead of time to get permission for the workers to drop some of the trimmings in their yard etc. We were very pleased with the results. We did learn that it is best to inspect the work before the "climber" removes his equipment from the tree. He wasn't happy when he had to go back up in the tree with his equipment and get one of the main branches we had originally marked for removal. I'm not sure what the best way is to show what branches need to be removed. Shoot them with a paintball gun? Take pictures and mark them? The tree climber is the one who said we should have talked to him, but the guy on the ground seemed to be doing the communicating so I thought everything was understood. All and all the work was completed to our satisfaction. They did a great job and cleaned up all of the debris and the price was reasonable. The coupon also helped reduce the cost.

James and his crew did a very good job trimming a tree that was hanging over my house. The limbs were brought down in such a manner so as to not hit the house or cause significant damage to the yard or drive. I would recommend Kzoo Tree Service to those looking for quality tree work at a fair price.

We got three estimates on the job and chose Kalamazoo Tree Service because they were the lowest price, they are rated highly on Angie's List, and they indicated that they wouldn't drive on our lawn. The day that they cut our trees down was, in James' words "one of those days where everything goes wrong." It is important to note that we understand that sometimes things happen and would not give a negative review just based on that. James did his best to correct the problems, but if you read on you will see what the uncorrectable issues were. Here is everything that went wrong that day: 1. They broke our neighbors' concrete pathway (next to their driveway) with their truck. James called us at the end of the day to notify us and said that he would have it fixed. We ultimately agreed to a repair cost, which we paid to our neighbors and took off of what we owed James. However, this never should have happened in the first place because James was not given permission by us or by our neighbors to be on their driveway or anywhere on their property, and was therefore trespassing. Had they not driven off of the side of the driveway and over the lawn and pathway, we probably would have never known that they were trespassing, which brings us to... 2. They ripped three tire tracks in our neighbors' lawn. After we pointed this out, they covered the tracks with topsoil and we agreed to seed on our own so that the grass type would match. However, when we had received the initial estimate from James, he said, "I don't drive on your lawn. I pay guys to carry the wood to the curb and then come pick it up. I wouldn't drive on my own lawn so I wouldn't drive on yours." This promise was one of the main reasons we hired James - the other two companies had to drive on our lawn and we didn't want to deal with tire tracks or broken sprinkler heads. James' promise turned out to be a lie. Obviously it was easier for them to get as close as possible to the thickest part of the tree trunks, but common business sense would tell you that you can use a chainsaw to cut it into carry-able pieces in order to uphold your word to your customer. 3. They hit our house with a falling tree, breaking a shingle, denting one gutter, and knocking another one a couple of inches away from the house. We didn't even notice the damage until our neighbor (who has no reason to be dishonest), told us that he watched them tie up the tree and cut it at the base, and as it came down one of the ropes came undone and it fell towards our house, hitting it. We decided to see if James would come clean, but when we called him and noted the gutter and roof damage, he initially acted like he didn't know what could have caused it. When we let him know that there was a witness to the accident, he backpedaled and said that "maybe a branch hit it." He repaired the shingle and reattached the gutter, and we bent back the other gutter ourselves. The problem here is not that this happened - again, we get that things can go wrong. The problem is that James didn't notify us and wasn't upfront about it until he knew there was a witness. We were happy with the cleanup job, the quick removal of the wood stacked at the curb, and the promptness and thoroughness of the stump grinding and subsequent cleanup. While we would not use Kalamazoo Tree Service again nor would we recommend them, we do realize that there are many people who would and our experience is obviously the minority one. If you do hire them, we implore you to stay home to keep an eye on things! Ironically, we were planning to be home on the original date of scheduled service but things were moved due to the weather and we weren't able to be present on the actual day. Boy, was that a mistake! I doubt they would have trespassed or gone against their lawn-driving word if we were watching, and there would have been no way to act like a tree didn't hit our house. James is a nice guy and we hope that he's learned from the true mistakes in this situation.

The worst part about this service was the response time. I had to call three times before I could even get someone to come for an estimate. I would usually not give someone a third chance, but since they came so highly rated on Angie's List I pursued it. Did not show up on the scheduled day to do the job, no return call to figure out what was going on and then randomly showed up unannounced. Did not complete the job with one visit, again showed up later unannounced and completed the work.

The service from Kalamazoo tree service was nothing short of outstanding. The personnel doing the removal and the clean up aferwards was exceptional. Following a storm with high winds, several limbs from a neighbor's tall tree (that also overlooks our house and garage, about 100+ feet tall) fell, on our property and the neighbor's. The biggest limb actually blocked our garage door. We called Kalamazoo Tree Service and they had someone come in a timely fashion to cut up the tree limbs and remove them from our property and the neighbor's. While here, they spoke with the neighbor and us about trimming the tree, which had some dead branches and some limbs that looked weak compared to the weight they were carrying in foliage. They returned to trim this tree and did a very thorough job, spending several hours to prune the tree carefully. Again, they piled all the trimmed limbs into piles for chipping, taking care to clean our property thoroughly before they left.
Description of Work: The men pruned an extremely large tree (100 ft.+) the overlooks two houses and a garage. The work took them several hours, and all tree debris was placed in piles for later chipping.

I had a large tree quoted in my yard by the owner of the company. The price was very fair and we had everything all scheduled even though the owner told me over and over how busy he was, how he needed to spend time with his girlfriend, and he even suggested I not use the 10% discount from Angie's List once we see what a good job they do. They did show up when they said they would on the day scheduled. I went out and talked with the workers, who were very nice. They just stood there staring at the tree for about 45 minutes (there were numerous workers there) and then after an hour I noticed they were gone and my tree was untouched. I gave them 3 hours to see if they just forgot something. I called the owner later that afternoon and he said, "we quoted you to low, we can't do it.' I was inside my house and no one even told me what was going on. I would have worked with them on the price, but instead they just left and didn't even call. When we called to ask what was going on, the owner told my boyfriend, "I work harder than you do, you don't know what it's like!". Needless to say, my boyfriend works on remodels and landscaping and knows what it is like to work in 90+ degree heat. I was very disappointed in the way this was handled, and the hassle it has caused since I have been doing remodeling work on my home and the delay has pushed everything back. A simple knock on the door and an explanation would have been nice.

Overall, it went very well. They were punctual, very professional and efficient. I loved the fact that the owner advised us on how much better our trees would look when shaped properly and not just having a few of the lower limbs taken off. We felt that the price was very reasonable considering that six trees were trimmed, three extensively, and a large dead tree taken down and cut up into usable pieces.
Description of Work: The owner came to our house and gave professional opinions on the trees needing trimming, gave us a very fair price and set up a date for the trimming. They arrived on the date agreed upon and the trimmer/climber was very experienced and professional with his shaping and trimming. The cleanup was superb. I thought we'd have a lot of raking to do afterwards, but they did a wonderful job. They also cut up and stacked the wood from a dead tree that they took down for us.

James & Brandon did a very thorough job of making our trees look so much better. Following all the cutting, they cleaned the entire work area. They were so pleasant and professional to work with, the price was right, and we will definitely contact them again when the need arises.
