McDonald Plumbing cleaned out blockage in the sewer lines, reset the toilet, scoped out the sewage line, and plotted the course of the sewage line for installation of a future access point. Don and his helper were punctual, professional and went above and beyond for the cost. I would highly recommend them.

Dan was fantastic. It took about 10 minutes to arrive at our house at 10pm. He went right downstairs and found the source of the flooding in seconds. We had to pull up some of the subfloor, and he was careful to do as little damage to the rest of the flooring as possible. He was able to do all of the work from the sidewalk portal, which meant no tools (or mud!) in our basement. He was so quick, so professional, and so throrough. The flooding totaled about 30 gallons of water, and the low price surprised us.

I came upon them by chance calling around on a Saturday morning with a sewer backup. They got there within 2 hours. When things didn't look good after snaking and videotaping the drain we decided to have Scott come in on Monday and give me an estimate on replacing the sewer pipe. It was not only filled with roots, which got partially cleaned out but the old clay pipe was broken in several places and was totally blocked about 52' out. Of course, once you have the hole in the ground you might as well replace the water feed also. The old one was lead. McDonald's knew just what they had to do and what the city would do so they saved us money by getting the city involved in some of this work. We had one delay. McDonalds finished their part and the city was to come in the next day and finish up but McDonalds had neglected to put a steel box in the hole for safety. The man responsible saw that the ground was extremely hard (it was the hardest the city had ever had to drill through, they told me) and thought it would not be needed but the city must follow regs and we got delayed a day while the box was installed. This is the telling part for me. One of the guys called me, Gary, Greg? Anyway he told me about the delay. I said to him, "What, did the city change its regulations on you"? Giving him a perfect out. But he told me the whole story and said that he should have made sure the box was there in the first place. I just found them honest and straightforward through the whole thing. They do this type of plumbing more than maybe anyone and have every tool conceivable for getting it done with the least expense. I would certainly use them again.

I have not used any other plumber and cannot imagine calling anyone else. I have been completely satisfied overall. Plumbing is a dirty jpb and although they left a few messes, overall it was no more than one could expect from such extensive work. So yes I had to do my part of some cleaning up but their punctuality and availability and quality of work cannot be disputed. I haven't had any leaks or plumbing issues arrising from their completed work.
Description of Work: Ever since I first bought this HUD house in Sept 2010, I have called on McDonald plumbing to handle all the plumbing issues. They have replaced the stack to the upstairs bathroom, and installed the toilet and sink and ran new pipes for a tub upstairs. They telescoped the sewer lines out to the street and cleared the blockage. They installed new drains in the basement for my washer and utility tub, and repaired plumbing going into the water heater.

The indoor valve to open the water to our outdoor faucets and sprinkler system wouldn't work when we turned it on in the spring. We have a well. When the plumber came he said he'd have to replace part of the pipe which included the valve and faucet because there was no room to cut the PCV pipe and patch it to replace just the valve. He said he'd also put in copper pipe, faucet, and valve when he replaced that section of pipe and valve because it was better than the PCV piping and we wouldn't have another PCV valve that could break. He also showed me iron buildup in the old pipes. The quote was $200-300. However, after doing the work, he found a leak in the T-connection where the water from the well went to either the outdoors or the inside holding tank. He found the old T-connection (lead) had split, either when he had removed the pcv piping or perhaps it had been that way before and just been sealed with plumbers goop (we'd never had a leak there before). He ended up replacing the pipe from the well meter to the T and the T to the holding tank with copper pipes and replaced the other faucet and valve that went to the house also. Each time he had to drain part of the holding tank as there was no shutoff valve before it and no room to put one in, thus everything took longer to repair. Jacob was very professional and explained everything in detail. We were happy with him and would have him do plumbing repairs for us again. The company charges a $45 service call plus the cost to do the work. They have a 1-year warranty on the work they do.
Description of Work: McDonald's replaced a broken PCV valve in our basement that turned on the water to our outdoor faucets and sprinkling system. They also ended up replacing the old lead piping and faucet from our pump meter (we have a well) to the holding tank with copper piping and copper faucet, and replacing the PCV piping and valve and faucet in the basement from the T-connction to the inside faucet with copper piping and copper faucet and valve.

These guys have done this enough times so there weren't any surprises they couldn't handle. They dug the whole a little to the side of where they needed to be to minimize damage to an existing maple tree. They put down carpet protectors all the way from the rear entrance to the point where they were working in the basement. This was greatly appreciated and necessary given that it rained during the whole process. Things appeared to go as planned and they refilled the whole, placed topsoil on top and cleaned up including removing all of the utility flags that were scattered across the lawn. McDonald's also provided an opportunity to complete an online customer satisfaction survey and followed up with a call to make sure I was satisfied with the outcome. I like that approach.
Description of Work: McDonald plumbing replaced the poly-butelene (blue tube) going from the service main to my water meter. They dug a whole in the front yard to locate the service connect and then used compressed air to send a 'missle' from the house to the hole in order to lay the copper tubing replacement. They driled about a six inch hole in the foundation wall to bring in the new piping which was then sealed when the work was completed. The cost for this service varies depending on the number of jobs they can schedule on that day. So you are much better off talking to your neighbors first to identify at least two others who want to have the service done. It will probably only cost you about $1500 if you do that. Given the amount of equipment they have to bring out, the pricing structure makes sense.

Overall McDonald's was great to deal with. I noticed the leak at 8pm on a Monday evening. I didnt have the time to do the repair myself so Tuesday morning I started calling around trying to find a plumber that could squeeze me in. I called two large companies and one independent. None of the three could get to me until the following day. I called McDonalds. I told them I had to work but could meet them at my house by 3pm. They were able to squeeze me in and agreed to call me before that time to confirm they would be able to meet me at that time (I didnt want to take work off only to find out they couldnt come over). Craig from McDonalds called me about 1230pm as promised. He said they were actually ahead of schedule and could meet me sooner if need be. I couldnt leave work any sooner so I kept the 3pm appointment.I was shocked when I got home at 250pm and found two plumbers and a service truck waiting for me! The guys were friendly and seemed knowledgeable (journeyman and his apprentice). I asked for a price quote and was a little surprised at the $185 estimate for essentially a half hours worth of work (and not a lot of copper...). However, I had a $25 off coupon that I found on their website so the final price was $160 (I assumed the job would cost me 80-100), I told them to go ahead and complete the work since they were so good about working with my schedule and, of course, they were already there and the leak had to be fixed. The guys put plastic booties over their shoes before entering my house. They had the job done in about 35 minutes. One of the plumbers started picking bits of dripped solder up from my floor! Overall the work was excellent and I am happy with their service. My only slight dissatisfaction was the price.
Description of Work: I had two small sections of galvanized water supply line left over from a past remodel. Part of the galvanized pipe developed a leak and needed to be replaced with copper. I had McDonalds remove the old galvanized hot and cold supply lines, sweat in new copper and install two shut off valves.

I could NOT recommend McDonald plumbing more. The city came to shut off the water (with out any kind of notice as city's do) because of a complaint of too much water on the side walk. The city assessed the issue and determined the pipe under the front yard had a leak. I called McDonald plumbing feeling rather urgent about things. Scott was out to evaluate the issue that day. He explained how he was going to fix it, check the amount of water in the yard the next day. A little drying time was needed and we scheduled the work to be done. It took the team 4 hours and they didnt ruin the front yard, did not have to excavate the sidewalk thanks to a handy tool they use to minimize digging. None of it was covered under my home owners policy. It was all out of pocket expense and they knew just how to minimize my costs as well. Four hours after they started work, I went to check on their progress, they had already had the city out to inspect and the water was back on and they were finished! AMAZING!!! Scott and his team are true life savers!

See above comments. The men who performed the work were timely, friendly, and cleaned up the property after they were finished. I am completely satisfied.
Description of Work: McDonald Plumbing replaced water and sewer lines installed in 1929 from inside the house to the street following a black water backup in July. Scott McDonald met with me a couple of weeks prior to the project, was patient, professional, and explained everything the company would do to prevent the problem returning. Scott McDonald definitely had my best interest in mind. He also recommended Lawrence Kok Concrete to replace three large sections of the driveway which covered the water and sewer lines. Both companies performed outstanding work, and I highly recommend them.

Overall everything went well. McDonald had to reschedule our initial work date due to some emergency work that came up for them, but they were excellent about communicating with us. They arrived promptly on the rescheduled date, work seemed to go well, taking the majority of the business day to complete. They even went around to the neighbors for us to ask that cars in the way be moved. We have a shared driveway and live on a busy street, so they had to park their truck in our driveway. Our neighbors needed to get out while they were doing the work, and although the person we initially asked to move the truck did not do so immediately, when I asked the supervisor he immediately had the truck moved for our neighbors. Everyone was friendly and for the most part professional. The only negative during the experience was that either sand got in the water main, or working on the plumbing broke free sediment that had accumulated the pipes, and ended up clogging the floats in both my toilets. This was easy enough for me to clean, though may have been a problem for some people. I'm sure this is a routine thing to have happen, but I seems like we should have been warned, or that they should have flushed the lines out when they were done replacing the water main. As a side note, I spoke with an acquiantence who is a general contractor after the work was done, and he would have estimated the work at twice what we paid McDonald. The other quotes we got for just the sewer work were in line with that as well, most being about double what McDonald had quoted. I asked the Vice President of the company (who came out to do our quote incidentally) why they were so much less expensive than everyone else. He told me it was because mains work is what they specialize in and they do it well. After the work was done I would agree. If you need water or sewer mains work in the Grand Rapids area I couldn't imagine going to anyone else. I will be going back to McDonald for other plumbing work in the future.
Description of Work: Our city sewer was backing up too frequently due to misaligned clay tiles and tree roots. McDonald sleeved new 4 inch PVC to the city sewer through the old clay tile. They were able to do this by breaking up a small area of the basement floor and digging one hole in the front yard, allowing them to run the new sewer line under most of our landscaping and our rather large concrete front porch. We also had the old lead water main replaced with a new copper water main. They were also able to do this work with minimal disruption to our landscaping since they were able to use the same holes that were dug for the sewer work.

They were not truthful and they overcharged me. They didn't listen; I had told them the way it had to be worded for the insurance company. They failed to do that although they told me they would. I talked to them again. I told them they didn't tell any lies and I wanted them to tell the truth but they didn't word it so the insurance wouldn't cover it. They said they would do it and we were talking about $900. I called again and they have been nonresponsive and won't answer phone calls. The person that answers the phone has been very rude in telling me that they will give them the number to call back. They never call back. They left a mess outside and I will definitely never, never call them again.

Their plumber arrived on time. He spent a good amount of time estimating where the valve was located. He covered all exposed surfaces with drop cloths before he cut through the drywall.
