Justin did a great job, very fast, friendly, knows his business. This job was a little more complicated because there is a outdoor wood furnace that heats the water when the furnace is running.

When Adam arrived, he walked around the house and pointed out that due to the way our house was situated (high on a hill, with water run-off all around), we are likely to never have serious sump pump problems. (Indeed, in 20 years we've rarely even seen any water in our sump crock, even when adjacent areas are flooding.) His recommendation was to avoid getting the expensive backup sump pump but to instead install a new sump pump (around $350) and use an existing (old electric) sump pump as a backup system. In addition he gave us good advice about our old hot water heater, which he will replace for us next week. We've used Hedlund many times and have always been very pleased with their service, professionalism, and cost.

The work was done promptly. It was more involved than originally thought; the leak was in a different part of the faucet, and thus a replacement was required. We were pleased with the work.

Hedlund Plumbing is ALWAYS my first choice when I have plumbing issues. They do a first class job and their fees are reasonable. I feel they go above and beyond to be sure the job is done right and to my satisfaction as the customer. The valve inside the tank was slowly leaking...so slow, we barely noticed it until our water bill began rising and we looked for places where water could be leaking. The valve was replaced quickly and expertly. The plumber was on time according to our scheduled appointment. That is always the case with Hedlund.

The gentlemen was polite and explained what he thought the problem was and what the plan was. He replaced the valves and verified the problem was fixed and that we didn't need a new water heater. He showed up within the window estimated, as well as called ahead to let me know he was on his way. The space was cleaned up and he was finished within 30 minutes.

My old faucet was a 20 year old Moen with a lifetime guarantee for the original owner (which I was) against drips and leaks. The owners leaflet gave instructions on how to obtain a replacement faucet cartridge and 'o' bands free of charge that were needed to stop the drips/leaks. A You Tube video showed how to change the cartridge and bands. I obtained the cartridge and bands and tried to do the replacement myself, but could not remove the old cartridge. The Moen help line suggested I obtain a cartridge removal tool from the local hardware store which I did, but without success. The thing would not budge. So I put the faucet back together and called Hedlund because of the high rating it had earned on Angie's List. I expected the guy would be able to remove the old cartridge and insert the new one and that my bill would be just for a service call and labor (which I expected to be no more than 15 minutes). I was scheduled for service between noon and 4 pm and the guy called first at about 2:15 which I thought was satisfactory. But as soon as he saw the old faucet, he said that there was a part underneath the handle that was no longer made and that I would have to have a brand new faucet installed. So what could I do? He was already at the house and I was already paying him. Didn't make any sense to tell him to leave while I contacted Moen again. So he replaced the faucet with a Kohler model. I didn't ask for a Moen replacement or if one was available because at that point it looked like Moen had let me down. But it was Hedlund that had let me down. The guy installed the Kohler faucet, He cleaned up under the sink abit, but left the new faucet covered in greasy handprints. After the left, I sent an email to Moen and told them of my experience and asked them if Moen's guarantee was only good as long as replacement parts were available or if the plumber was just trying to make an extra buck. Since it was after hours on a Friday when I did this, it wasn't until Tuesday evening that I got a call from a Moen rep. She asked about the part that Hedlund said was no longer made because she wanted to check to see if it was truly out of production. I told her it was a moot point because I had the old faucet replaced. Then she told me that they could give me a rebate on the price of the new faucet, but I told her that was a moot point as well since the replacement wasn't a Moen. So, in retrospect, it would have been professional for the Hedlund guy to remove the part that was no longer replaceable to allow me the option of taking it up with Moen to show that he was right. If he was 100% on the up and up, he would've done that to erase any doubts I might have had that he was telling the truth. Instead I'm not sure of his professionalism and that is why this review is on Angie's List and not a different one.

I appreciate the customer taking the time to discuss this last week and allow me to explain the situation with the Moen faucet. I can be difficult for a customer service rep at an 800 # to fully understand the exact parts in question, and communication can be an issue. We do try and have our technicians make it very clear about whether or not a faucet can be repaired, and I do agree that in this case the tech could have done a better job explaining things. We always first determine if a faucet can be repaired, and if it makes sense to repair it, depending on age, brand, condition, etc. And I can say 100% without a doubt that the replacement route for this 20+ year old faucet was the best way to go for the long term.

They were difficult to convince to take the job, and after coming out and giving an estimate, they did not bother to call me back to come and actually do the work for at least three weeks. About a week of this time was needed for them order parts -- the other two weeks, during which the shower was inoperable, was due to them forgetting about me (the secretary there admitted as much). When someone did finally come back, it was not the same guy who gave me the estimate. This new guy did half of the original job I had wanted them too, and then quickly left before I had taken a look at the work. I had also wanted a safety valve installed so that I could shut off the shower, without turning off the water in the entire house, if anything broke like that happened again in the future. Given how little they appeared to care about actually doing the work in the first place, I just let it go (and only paid for what they had actually done). I still don't have the shower shut off valve, but if I ever get it I'll get it from someone else. Basically, they appear to be too busy. My recommendation: Give your work to someone who will appreciate it more, and treat you like a customer instead of an annoyance. ----------------- Just a follow up: The fact that they can't even remember coming out to take care of the shower says quite a bit...
Description of Work: Replaced a faucet in a shower that had broken (badly). Before I forcibly stopped the leak (which almost made things worse) I had to turn off the water in the whole house in order to stop the shower from running non-stop. They ended up having to cut the faucet out and replace the entire thing.

Service man arrived right on time as scheduled. Repair of floor drain in basement went without a problem. He noticed that our sump pump was not working properly and so that was also replaced. Since we live in a subdivision with a high water table, this was a good preventative measure. Checked the connections and confirmed that our water from the sump was properly set up. The installation of the kitchen faucet was a problem because of the thickness of the countertop but with some consultation another serviceman, this was solved and the installation was completed. It was all done within the time frame they estimated, including the "glitch" with the faucet. All Hedlund employees were very polite and helpful, including the conversations with folks on the phone. These folks do quality work - some other reviews indicate that they are expensive. Compared to another estimate I had to just replace the faucet, I would have to disagree.

Badly. The tank was not installed properly, and water sprayed out of a connecting hose soaking some of the carpeting in our finished basement.. They did come immediately to fix it, though it was a different man than the initial installer. And it was fixed; fair enough. Trouble is, we were told our inconsistent water pressure was the result of a 'failed' float in the tank. The tank (and presumably the float) were changed, but our water pressure is as inconsistent as ever.

Let me take a moment to clear up some facts. We replaced the well tank Nov.2011 due to a failed bladder within the tank. At the time the pump was running way too much due to the bladder failure. We were in fact back out March 2012 to replace a defective water fitting at the main connection, which was replaced under warranty. After getting the water back on at that point there were no signs of "inconsistent pressure" throughout the system. According to our records at the 3/12 visit, the well switch is working as designed, and turns on at 40-psi and turns off at 60-psi. There have also been no calls to our office since then in regards to any other issues with the system.

Removed my old water heater which had a gas leak at the valve. It was 17 years old. Harry did a good job of taking out the old water heater and installing a brand new one (he also took away the old one). He went above & beyond when he replaced a valve stem on my refrigerator line with a better replacement (which he didn't even charge me for). He was on-time, courteous and knowledgeable. Good Job Harry & Thank You. Which is more than I can say about Consumers Energy.

Not too well, really. I think that being charged for a mere estimate is ridiculous. I've never been charged for an estimate from any business prior to this date. And while the representative was pleasant, he failed to record one detail, on which I was called later to see if I could get the measurement. Not wanting to be incorrect, the rep had to return to get this measurement as well.

I'm sorry to hear about your feelings on this job. At certain times we will charge for an estimate when a verbal price over the phone will not be sufficient, but if the job is accepted that standard fee will be applied towards the cost of the job. Unfortunately with fuel & vehicle costs so high it is very tough to maintain a policy of free estimates 100% of the time.

We met Hedlund's at the Home and Garden Show, and we found out they are people of skill and integrity. After several other plumbers balked at the complexity of installing new plumbing for our yard irrigation's additional water meter and back flow preventer, Hedlund's sent Ned to do the job. Always punctual and professional, Ned created a plumbing masterpiece. He was safe, meticulous, and thoughtful. We were so impressed that we used them to install a new hot water heater and to redo most of our drainage pipes in our home, as well as add shut-off valves to all fixtures that needed them. We highly recommend Hedlund's Plumbing.

Wash basin part was fine. A little pricey, but the work is great. The problem I have is that they came out the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to do this and to get the information for the quote. I called them on Monday 12/9/13 as we had not heard anything from them about the quote. Tom, the gentleman who answered the phone was very nice, but said that they somehow lost the paperwork and he'd have to get with the person that did the work. He left me a message stating they were looking into it and they would get back to me with a quote. Still haven't heard anything. Very frustrating when I tried to give them extra time because of the holiday, but they can't seem to get it together to actually give me a quote. I guess they dont want my business after all.

They quoted me $95 to come out and unplug toilet with a snake. If toilet had to be removed , cost would be more. I had dropped an object the size of a pencil into the toilet and could not retrieve it. Toilet would flush just water, but was plugging with other contents. The guy snaked the toilet a couple times, tested it be adding some toilet paper and seeing if it would still flush and it did. He concluded the problem was fixed. Actually after he left, I saw object in bottom of toilet and could retrieve it. So he never did get rid of object, but snaking must have dislodged it so that it somehow ended up in bottom of toilet where i cold grab it. So that part worked out Ok, but he really had not finished job of unplugging toilet with certainty - I just got lucky and saw that it has worked loose. He noticed the flush handle had to be held down a bit long for a proper flush and asked if I wanted him to correct this. I figured he was trying to do more to fill time I had paid for since the snaking only took about 15 minutes. So he put in a new flapper and flush lever. Charged $42 for those two parts, an additional $30 for labor, plus $89 for "trip charge." The office person said he would be near my home on another job, so that is why she sent this guy to my place. Despite this I still paid the full "trip charge." After he was finished, I wasn't confident about the unplugging because he never recovered object, but I figured if he had to come back they couldn't charge another "trip charge" so I let it go. The bill at ~ $165 was much higher than I expected. The snaking took just 15 minutes max, and adding a flapper and flush lever is as simple as plumbing gets. Why he added more labor charge ($30) I do not know. But bottom line is I feel I was overcharged, that he pulled a little "bait and switch" on me, and there was uncertainty as to whether the original problem was fixed because when he left the object had not been recovered. My caution is that they find ways to pad the bill, and i don't get the $89 "trip charge" when the guy is already nearby. Price too high. I normally use another plumber who doesn't have a "trip charge" and just charges for the work he does, but he had a big job and couldn't come for quite a while. So I consulted Angie's List and Hedlund had good ratings. This is the first time Angie's List steered me the wrong way. Vandermeer Plumbing is much better if you can get him. I also had made an appointment with Perry Plumbing but they could not come for four days (Hedlund came the day I called). I had Perry Plumbing pencil me in but forgot to call Perry Plumbing back and cancel appointment and he showed up right on time. I was so embarrassed. He was really nice about it. I gave him $20 for the inconvenience i caused him. So I would also recommend Perry Plumbing. He told me when they come they charge $85 up front but that covers an hour of work (not a "trip charge"). He seemed fine with the $20 I gave him, but I still feel like a dope for not canceling. Next time i will use Vandermeer or Perry Plumbing. I don't think you can go wrong with either.
Description of Work: Used "snake" to try and unclog toilet, and corrected a minor problem with flushing where the handle had to be held down for about 10 to 15 seconds for proper flush.

I thought I'd clear up some info I found confusing in the job & pricing description above. The facts are we went to the customers house, augered-out the toilet bowl without having to pull it, and replaced the toilet flapper & trip lever at the same time. The total cost after the Angie's List coupon came to $128.62 and we were at the house a total of 30 minutes. There was no 'bait & switch', no unfair pricing, and we were completely upfront with the total costs involved. I think the confusion arose with the initial phone estimate of $95 for clearing the toilet bowl. Instead of simply adding on the added 1/4 hour of time as well as the tank parts, the technician just converted this job into a time & material work order. The pricing in this case ends up being almost identical either way, but it's usually an easier way to show the customer the individual prices for each 1/4 hour and the parts used. I can assure this customer as well as any others out there that every service company has the cost of travel included in their pricing. Nobody is driving vans all over town with tens of thousands of dollars in inventory and the current price of fuel for nothing. At Hedlund Plumbing we choose to line item that cost for an initial trip to the job (which includes the first 1/4 hour). If someone claims they do not charge for travel they simply are not being honest with the customer. In summary I have reviewed the work order and the costs involved with the repairs and do feel that the overall amount charged of $128.62 is a very fair price for the work involved. I will agree that we could have been more clear with the customer on the pricing breakdown and should have made sure they were in 100% understanding before leaving the house that day. We always do everything possible to give our customers the best quality materials, professional service, and quality workmanship on each and every job.
