I feel grateful for all the knowledge he shared with us. He helped guide us through getting our toilet fixed. He told us all of the options. We went with doing a repair before going out and buying a new one. He helped us to make a decision, and was not pushy. They were very helpful, and I was very comfortable with the technician who came out. Overall, I feel confident that he helped us to look at everything that could potentially go wrong. He even gave us the option to purchase a new toilet and have them install it.

We called Hedlund Plumbing that morning and they arrived that afternoon. The employee (I can't recall his name unfortunately) was punctual, professional, and took care of the problems very quickly. He took the time to look over the problems and then discuss the work he was going to perform prior to starting. Will certainly hire again in the future.

The plumber unhooked my backup while cleaning my pump and then forgot to hook it back up. I realized it after he left and called him back. If I had NOT noticed this, I would have been in very serious trouble. The day after he was here I left town for a week, and during that time the power went out at my home for 5 days. Had I not noticed this, my house would have been floating! Also, he was full of negativity and acted as if he was angry with me.
Description of Work: The pump on my sump pump needed cleaning as it was running sluggishly.

Thank you for the review and information regarding our service call to your house back in March. I do want to apologize for the mistake our technician made in not plugging the backup back in as well as his attitude. it sounds like this technician was having a particularly bad day since he also did not act in our normal professional manner. We talk constantly with our techs about representing our company as well as themselves in the most professional manner possible and we certainly came up short in this case. I will be going over this info with all of our technicians as a reminder about what we say & how we act, because that has always been very important to our company and will continue to be important for decades to come. Thanks again for sharing this and allowing us to always improve our services & professionalism.

The crew showed up on time, explained to me exactly what they intended to do and went right to work. They cleaned up well and presented the bill and to my amazement it was $400 less than their quote. How often does that happen?
Description of Work: We had a critical plumbing problem facing us. A cast iron sewer pipe was showing signs of decay, i.e. rust. We received a quote from Hedlund for $2,430.00 with the promise that the work could be done in one day.

Thank you for the wonderful review and kind words. I'm very happy that job went much better than expected, and although a cast iron job does not always go as smooth as yours, we do have that happen every now and then and we're happy to make the necessary adjustment to keep the overall cost in line with a fair price.

the tech, Roger was really nice, very efficient and answered all my questions. I was very glad I went through with this service call. I almost didn't due to the rudeness of the woman that answered my initial call to the shop. I guess she was having a bad Monday at 9:00 a.m.! Don't let her chase you away if you call Hedlund! This was my best experience with a plumbing company yet (except for her) and I have had to have several pipes replaced over the years. Wish I would have called them the first time I needed a plumber!

Thank you for the phone call and opportunity for the main sewer line blockage. Although we are not set-up currently to take care of this sized drain line, we are working on the equipment and personnel necessary for handling this main sewer line issues in the future. He was on time and performed the work but charge $672 dollars..$63 to fix the valves...$99 for trip charge...and $475 for the disposal...another $66 for labor. If you want to pay nearly $500 for a disposal that costs $180...this is the right company for you. I've had Hedlund in my home for a number of projects, so considered myself as one of their regular customers....not anymore. I even asked the installer how much one was going to cost...he said "no idea" so I came him the benefit of the doubt and said I wanted something comparable to the Incinerator I already had. The entire project took 90 minutes. Here is the link to the exact model that was installed that sells for less than $200: [*** Link removed ***] Here is a link to the Waste King website where you can clearly see what they charge for units: [*** Link removed ***] (The model they installed was the Legend 9950) I give Michelle credit for trying to make it right over the phone, I would have been satisfied with getting back $100, unfortunately a follow up call by the owner telling me he stood behind the invoice cancelled it. According to Tom, the versions of disposals they install are different than was is available from the company...I'm not buying that and I'm not using Hedlund for any more work in my home. Buyer beware!

Response from Hedlund Plumbing
As I mentioned on the phone during our conversation, the cost for all of the items we installed are completely in-line with the market rates. I also stand behind my comments about companies offering different models for retail vs. through our wholesale network. I always caution customers about purchasing their own product because you also will need to deal with the company directly for any possible warranty items vs. having our company automatically take care of that for you. There is a cost for our company to offer a professional installation, and back the install up with the best warranties in the area. Like you, I sure wish I could offer installation & quality materials for next to nothing, but if that were the case we would not have survived as a company for 77 years. The breakdown of numbers you list above are also a bit confusing. The bottom line is for a total cost of $672 we installed a 3/4hp garbage disposer (which comes with a 10-yr replacement warranty) and at the same time installed new shut-off valves and supply lines for the kitchen faucet. For the quality of materials and work you received for this job, this number is well in line with the rates in our area, and in fact there are many companies in town that would charge well above this figure. We evaluate service and installation rates on a regular basis to ensure our customers get the best overall package of price & quality for everything we do. I do appreciate the opportunity to discuss this over the phone with you, and although we were not able to make it right in your mind, I'm always open to looking into any call that a customer might feel is questionable. One of the worst feelings you might have as a home owner is to have someone come into your home for one task, fail to do said task, and leave you with a severe feeling of unease about something else. That was my experience with Hedlund. I ordered a new water heater for my new home with Lowes, and was expected to have the insulation done with Hedlund. This was not an emergency, just an attempt at being proactive on my part. When the first man showed up from Hedlund, I asked if the replace would go well, and he assured me it would. The first man cut the water pipes headed into the water heater, as well as the gas line, and started to drain the old water heater. This was all as expected. The second guy shows up with the new heater, and again assures me that everything should go as planned. I made the mistake of asking a third and final time if everything was going as planned. It was then that the second man who came with my new heater informed me of a catastrophe. Because the new water heater was a couple inches taller than the old one, the flue for the old water heater would be unusable for the new water heater as well as my current, working furnace. The reason given for this was that the flue vent was single wall instead of double wall and insulated, and it ran too far horizontally (it runs diagonally). I was told that not only would I not be able to get a new water heater, but that I would also need to replace and upgrade my current furnace at the same time because the flue would not work for the furnace either. When asked how the last furnace installed passed the inspection when it was installed, guy number two said that the inspector must have missed it. Quickly moving from (not) trying to solve the flue problem without replacing my furnace, guy number two went on to telling me that not only would I need a new water heater and new furnace, but they'd have to be relocated within the basement because of current code. He then rattled off several reasons why this had to be the case. He then asked why this hadn't been caught in the home inspection, despite the fact that I'd recently purchased the home. I told him I wasn't aware of the issue because the home inspector had gone over the furnace and water heater venting for at least a half an hour during the inspection, explaining how we'd be fine simply replacing the water heater. He told me that he hoped I could take some legal action against my inspector. Guy number two then started planning out my new fan-assist direct vent water heater before I even understood exactly what was happening. He gave me the card of an electrician in case I needed to switch to electric, which he could also install. We walked around the exterior of the home, as he even noted the new chimney liner that the previous owners had installed when they upgraded the furnace. Before leaving he reviewed my options: A) replace and move my furnace and water heater with significantly upgraded options or B) Die in a fire or of carbon monoxide poisoning. He then said he was unable to do the install or even remove my old water heater unless I chose option A. Obviously I wanted a second opinion, he recommended none, other than to call the electrician to set up the connection for the electric water heater, which costs about double per month to operate. Both men then left my disconnected water heater in my basement and did not return with any sort of write up of what was wrong or referrals for options for me. They also couldn't at all explain the process I would take when trying to refund my purchase with Lowe's. At this point (Friday afternoon), I was so confused as to what was happening that I called about 20 companies trying to get a second opinion. With both water lines and gas line leading to old tank cut and capped (gas line was left leaking), the best I could do was to have someone out after 5 PM Friday simply to have a look. The next guy who came out informed me that, the venting was not ideal, but it would work. The horizontal (diagonal) portion was not long enough to cause concern venting CO into my basement, and the flue vent type was actually an insulated b-vent, not the single wall as claimed by the gentlemen from Hedlund's. The water heater could simply be replaced for another standard natural draft type, but not until next week. Not only this, but he informed me that the seal on the gas line cut off the old water heater was so poorly done that it was leaking gas into my basement. This was confirmed with a test (water, soap in spray bottle) from the other contractor. So I went all weekend without hot water, called my girlfriend home from work and took the rest of the day off myself to call every plumber and HVAC contractor in the Lansing area because I thought we were poisoning ourselves and going to die if we didn't make the $10,000+ in upgrades recommended by the Hedlund's plumber. It's not even really the lack of hot water for the weekend that upset me, it was the feeling of unease and the lack of feeling safe that the plumber from Headlund's left me with that was the worst. The fact that the gas line was left leaking and our old water heater was left in place was just a nice little treat. So that's my experience using Lowe's/Hedlunds to replace my water heater. Thankfully we were able to have someone else come out to confirm that our house was not unsafe.

Discovered water pouring from my 30+ year old water heater at 5:30am. Shut off water and did some preliminary cleanup before looking on line to see who to call. Noticed that Hedlund was open already at 6:30 so I called them and actually got to speak to someone (Tom, I think). He checked and said he could send a crew over about noon time which was fine. They actually called about 10:00 saying they could come right then if OK and they were here by 10:30. They looked over the situation and gave me an estimate which I thought was fine from the little bit I knew about water heaters. Also, the price included the cost of a city permit and they had to make the exhaust pipe that went into the chimney larger to meet code. Also, strangely enough the hot water faucet at the kitchen sink started dripping while they were turning water on/off to make sure it was running when it needed to be and not running when it wasn't supposed to be. And it just so happened that Hedlund had installed that faucet 2 years ago. I had the receipt for it and they determined that the packing nut needed to be replaced and they replaced it free of charge since it was only 2 years old. So with all that done, I thought the $1200 price was adequate.

We closed on a house in January that needed some work on the plumbing. The sump pump didn't work, and the washing machine drained into the laundry tub, which drained into the nonworking sump pump. The main drain had been patched together where it exits the house, and was leaking, which meant that every time a toilet was flushed or water was run, it dripped into a bucket...nice. Needless to say, the smell in the basement wasn't the greatest! In addition, the water meter was old and corroded and needed to be upgraded, and the main shutoff needed to be brought up to code. I also wanted the flexible dryer vent replaced with a safer solid aluminum pipe, and wanted faucets on the laundry tub. We scheduled the initial visit for 8:30 a.m., and Brian actually arrived before I did (we were not yet living in the house). All told it took four visits to finish all of the work, which also had to be coordinated with the managers of the community well to facilitate shutoff of the water to the house. Hedlund arranged that, which involved tracking down a contact person and getting someone to meet Brian at an appointed time. At every visit, Brian and the other plumbers were prompt, courteous, and tried their best to avoid making a mess of the floors, since this was all happening in the winter with plenty of snow, salt and slush to get tracked in. All in all, it was about as painless as something like this could be.
Description of Work: Replaced a nonworking sump pump, rerouted washing machine drainage and installed ejection pump, installed faucets on laundry tub, repaired a leaking main exit drain, installed new shutoff on main line, installed new water meter to replace old, corroded one, upgraded dryer vent.

Hedlund did a great job of replacing our old, worn-out kitchen faucet with one I bought from Amazon. Brian was thorough and got the job done in less than 30 minutes, with not a speck of mess left behind. The job took far less time than if I had done it and was done much faster than I expected. There was some confusion about the cost and Tom Hedlund graciously handled the matter to my complete satisfaction. Their professionalism is absolutely top-rate in every way.

I didn't like the cost, because they charge you $60 or $80 just to come out and look at what the problem is, and then they charge you for whatever work they do on top of them. When they came out to look at the water softener, it was literally switching some switches on it, and then they were done. I spent like $80 for that and the guy was at my house for like 10 minutes, that was quite irritating. They do a good job, but they are just too expensive for what they do. It took them a week to get out here, and they were on time.

I'm sorry to hear your feelings about our two service calls back in 2013. I do appreciate the input about your experience and thought I'd inject a little more info for clarification. We had two service calls for you in 2013...The first on 8/19/13 to rebuild two shower valves and replace a tub faucet aerator. Our technician was there a total of 75 minutes. The second call was on 11/22/13 to adjust a water softener, and we were only there approx. 15 minutes. We have always charged a minimum amount for service work (which was $89 in 2013) which covers the first 15 minutes of repair time as well as travel to the house. This is a common practice for service companies, as the expense of a fully stocked van as well as a licensed technician must be accounted for on a daily basis. Rather than bury that cost in labor or a higher mark-up on materials we would rather be up-front about it right from the start. I will never apologize for having qualified technicians or 'travelling warehouses' for vans since it has proven to be the best way to go for decades. Also for clarification, the second service call for the softener adjustment came to $54 after you used the Angie's List coupon. I think it's fair to say that this amount is quite in line with a typical rate for comparable companies in our area for a basic service call. In fact, it might even be on the low side. We try and do everything possible with overhead to keep costs in line and maintain competitive pricing for our customers. As far as it taking a week to get the call scheduled I would also dispute that claim. With so much time passed from the actual call I have no proof, but it is very rare for us not to be able to schedule a call for the same day or the following day at the latest, unless the customer requests a future date. Hedlund Plumbing will never be the least expensive in town, and also should never be the most expensive. We strive to give our customers the best overall package including price, scheduling options, expertise, and warranty. That has been the case for over 75 years and will continue to be our goal. Thank you again for the feedback, and we are always open to any review to help make Hedlund Plumbing even better for decades to come.
