My Dear Readers: Today I want to speak to you about my experience with Grays Outdoor Services. Grays Outdoor Services is allegedly located at 691 Belton St, Garden City, Michigan. I drove on Belton Street on July 17, 2017, because I wanted to film a dialog between myself and the owner. There is no number 691 on Belton Street. The business phone number is 248-470-2316. I paid Grays Outdoor Services $725 to cut down a tree, grind down a stump, and lay down sod on Thursday, July 13. At first, the job went well. However, after the hardest of the work was done and the only thing left to do was to lay down sod, for some reason the owner decided to park a monster-sized truck on the lawn between the sidewalk and the road. I do not know what the official word is for that. I will call it the "curbside lawn." That of course left a heck of a gouge. The workers then used some giant vibrating-like machine on the gouge. There are still some furrows in the curbside lawn. The owner of Gray's Outdoor Services claims things will even out after a few weeks and a few rainstorms. What is worse, after the owner left, I noticed a gouge on the neighbor's curbside lawn. Even though I did not personally witness the monster-sized truck driving on top of the neighbor's lawn, I did not see any gouge on the neighbor's lawn when I moved my car on Wednesday, July 12. Unless a Smart Bus lost control on Thursday, July 13 between roughly 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. when I had last looked in the direction of the neighbor's lawn, I do not think the gouge could have come from anywhere else. During the evening of Thursday, July 13, I called Grays Outdoor Services. He said he would send someone to investigate the gouge on Friday, July 14. On Friday, July 14, the gouge on the neighbor's property was still there. During the afternoon of Friday, July 14, I sent two photos of the gouge to Gray's Outdoor Services, reminding them to please come and fix the problem. I sent a few more Angies List letters after that, giving Grays Outdoor Services until Monday, July 17 at 5 p.m. to fix the problem. Grays Outdoor Services never fixed the problem. Obviously, using Grays Outdoor Services was a mistake. Why did I use them? About five days before July 17, I sent requests for bids to seven or eight contractors on Angies List within a five-mile radius of my home. Grays Outdoor Services was the only business to respond. Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld once said, "You go to war with the Army you have." When you have an old tree that is a danger to public safety, you remove the tree with the contractor you have. The only person who was available was Grays Outdoor Services. I am guilty of stupidity for using Gray's Outdoor Services. However, a lot of contractors who apparently did not want to do a "small job" (and did not respond to a request for bids) are indirectly responsible too. In conclusion, I simply recommend never using Grays Outdoor Services.
Description of Work: I need a tree cut down, the stump removed, and sod laid in its place.

Job was I not completed as promised & left us & our neighbor with property damage.
Description of Work: Do not hire this company/person. Tom Gray is a scam artist! We contracted with him to take a large tree down from our back yard, grind the stump, repair the damage to the yard, remove the pile of wood from the stump grinding & sod a boulevard in the front of the house. In the process his crew cracked our driveway & my neighbors driveway in several locations. He promised to take care of all the damage & finish the job. He did not show up after repeated calls. In the end he did not have insurance for property damage & never returned. He showed us proof of insurance prior to the job & claimed to have gotten the permit. The fact that he remains on Angie List is a direct warning to all that they don't research the companies they post! After doing a Google search there were many warnings about this guy/company. We only wish we had done the same. We will go to court on this and make right by our neighbors. Do not hire Tom Gray or Grays Services!!!!

The fastest response I've ever gotten from anyone on Angie's list. Gray's are super professional! They e-mailed me within an hour of contacting them. I got a call that same evening to set up an estimate and the next day they were on time and very courteous. The price they gave me was reasonable and I will most likely be using their services next week.

Excellent! I first contacted them, based on other Angie's List reviews, a few days ago. Tom Gray came to the house and provided an estimate. After I uploaded it to my insurance company and they gave me the go-ahead, I called Tom and we made an appointment for him to start. He and his associates arrived -- on time -- and removed the broken shrubs. They returned later that day with the replacement shrubs and installed them. It all went very smoothly. His workers were also very friendly. And it looks great. Now, if I ever need more professional landscaping, I will have to make only one phone call.
Description of Work: Removed large yew shrubs that had been run over by an SUV, and replace them.

Tom received my call on a Saturday morning and made time to come out and look at our project that day, even though it was his daughter's birthday. We were impressed with his promptness, knowledge and professionalism. His quote was on par with prior bids we immediately agreed to go with him. His crew was available in a matter of days and his completed our project on time even though the weather wasn't always cooperative and sod was delayed because of the cold winter. He also worked with us when the crushed coconut shell ground covering couldn't be found to find a material we wanted, including removing the first option(bark) that we weren't satisfied with a triple ground hardwood. He went the extra mile. We're very happy with our new and improved curb appeal.
Description of Work: Grays tore out our old patchy, uneven lawn and 1960's landscaping and replaced it with a plush sod lawn with sprinklers and nicely layer out contempory landscaping.

We were strung along by another company for 2 mos. I then contacted Gray's Outdoor Services. Tom called right away. When he came over to find out what we wanted, he was friendly, punctual, listened, reiterated my plans then gave feedback that was very helpful. I would have l loved for everything that we planned to have been written down so the guys could have referred to it. I had such a positive feel for the job being run in a very orderly, spot on, professional way because of my experience with Tom. Not so. They started the demolition the very next day. The communication between the group of guys was not good. My husband and/or myself were out with them almost the entire time. We heard conversations the whole time that let us know there were several renditions of what was supposed to happen. We kept verifying with them what the next steps would be. There is sand, pieces of brick, rocks and dirt dumped and or swept onto our lawn that we had just spent the last two years to bring back to life. There are tire marks from one of the trucks that have left deep indentions in 4 different areas. I was told by one of the guys that they would be there at 7:00 a.m. on the last day. I was up at 6:30 to get dressed and be ready. They arrived at 9:00. I greeted him good morning and why are you two hours late. He said I didn't say I would be here at 7:00. I quoted exactly what he told me and I said it was ridiculous that all of these petty little things were going wrong and causing setbacks (there is more that I didn't mention) and he said "It is what it is". One young man borrowed tools from us. He was very polite and respectful. The "foreman" was leaving with them and my husband said " Those are mine, I lent them to the big guy". The foreman said "are you sure"? Then he proceeded to put the excess materials that we paid for into his truck. My husband called him on it. He brought them back into the garage and threw them down angrily. Did not say it was a mistake or apologize. WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE, WE ARE REALLY HAPPY WITH THE QUALITY OF THE PATIO AND THE WAY THE WHOLE YARD LOOKS. There are such simple ways to tighten up the communication and run a smoother business.
Description of Work: Took apart existing 2' high patio, pergola and brick walkway and replaced with sod and smaller brick patio and rubber 18x18" patio squares and some fencing.

We hired Tom Gray / Grays Outdoor Services to construct a brick paved patio for a total amount of $15,500. He took $7,500 of our payment up front and promised to complete the project within the next 5 days. But in the next 25 days, his crew only showed up for 3.5 days and completed about 15% of the project. Not a single piece of brick paver or wall block was even delivered! Then, without our consent, Tom withdrew from the project, left the mess yard at 15% completion, and kept the $7,500. Not only did he breach the contract, Tom Gray / Grays Outdoor Services also failed to provide a builder?s license. Michigan Law requires a contractor to be licensed in order to take any residential construction or repair job over $600. After doing a little research, I learned that many other homeowners and suppliers have had the same painful experience with him. I wish I saw the reviews before I hired him! I was totally satisfied with the services provided. He returned my call and came out the same day to give me an estimate and gave me a quote immediately. Promptly came a week later to do the job with his hard working crew. They did a good clean up after the job. I would definitely call him again for tree services.

The leveling, cleanup and repair was performed per stated request. Within two weeks of the work being completed the weeds and moss were back. The polymeric sand was not used and did not seal the joints between the pavers. We ended up redoing the removal of the paver sand and installing the requested polymeric sand ourselves. The repair work entailed about 12 hours of time and the purchase of the polymeric sand.
Description of Work: Repair and install new paver sand. Level and repair lifted pavers. Sand was to be Polimeric sand. Clean up required use of high pressure washer to remove moss and weeds.

The patio installed was smaller than what we agreed on contract. They did not give me a stone bench that was also on the contract. The owner argued with us about the patio size and said he would come back for the stone bench. We tried contacting him several times without a response. I contacted the BBB who said they could not get a response. The few plants were planted in clay without replacing the dirt. I doubt they will come back. The owner was nasty and screamed at me on the phone one of the times I tried to get him to deliver those services on the contract (for which he was paid).
Description of Work: Installed patio with pavers and a few plants around it.
