The serivcie seems to have been OK, However: 1. I was promised $50 rebate on each utlity bill (there are 3) which Mechanical was supposed to arrange through gas co. I haven't seen it. 2. I suggest you draw your own conclusions from the following: The main furnace is situated about 6 feet away from my workbench. When the technician came over, there was a brand-new cordless screwdriver sitting on the workbench.. I did not observe or monitor the technician's activities while he was attending to the furnace. He came upstairs, I paid him and he left. A few days later my wife and I went on a 2 week vacation over the Christmas period. No one went into the furnace room after the technician left on December 12. Upon returning from my vacation I went downstairs looking for the cordless screwdriver and it was nowhere to be found either on my workbench or anywhere in the vicinity. I have searched the entire house and have not been able to find it. What do you think happened? I have left two messages for the owner of the business to call me back and I have not heard from him to date.

Dear [member name removed], I will address your complaints in the same order and manner in which you listed them. 1. The DTE rebate process is not instant. Once the tune-ups have been completed and documented by our technicians. The paperwork then moves into the service coordinator for review and then to our processor for processing through the DTE web portal. After that the rebate process is in DTE's hands this process with them usually takes 4-8 weeks although in some cases such as at the end of the year when they are processing up to double the amount of claims it can take up to 12. Again this is out of our control. It is also possible that we made and error in the processing and I will have our staff dig into this immediately to get this resolved for you. We are human and from time to time make an error or have something slip through the cracks. 2. I struggle to believe that the technician has taken your cordless screwdriver. Are you absolutely certain that it was where you say it was? The particular technician that was in your home has over $5000.00 worth of tools in his collection. I can honestly tell you skilled technicians do not use cordless screwdrivers. He has three cordless drill/drivers of his own and doesn't need or use what you've described. I also have never once had a reason to believe in 4 years that he has stolen anything from a customers home or business, I'm quite certain that he has had plenty of opportunity to do so and would have if he were that type of person. I am a bit thrown that you chose an open venue to make bold accusations by calling someone a thief without actually knowing for certain that something illicit actually occurred. I was once myself accused of stealing a gold necklace from a customers home and even had a visit from the local police department. I was mortified by the thought that someone would accuse me of such a thing. Needless to say I received a phone call followed by a long apology letter stating that she found the necklace behind a piece of furniture. I'm sure that you cannot believe that you could have misplaced your tool but it is quite possible and in all fairness I guess I would have to admit that it is possible that my technician is a thief. I don't believe this to be the case but anything is possible. If you feel that what is fair is for me to replace it for you I'll do that just say the word. 3. As for me not returning your calls. This is the first I've heard of this issue. I have spoken with every office staff member and not one of them has any recollection of an attempt from you to contact me. Again it is highly unlikely but possible that the message was received and never passed along to me and I apologize. However, I assure you that customer complaints are top priority to me and my staff is well aware of this, especially with accusations such as yours. This would have been taken very seriously and addressed immediately. I am not only responding to this accusation via this media but will be attempting to contact you via telephone within minutes. My rebate processor will also be looking into the rebate issue and contacting you with an update. Sincerely Joel Wensley President

We had received three other quotes before Jeff from Mechanical came to our house. I liked two of those quotes and was ready to go with one of them. However, Jeff found a better solution than the other quotes while managing to be significantly cheaper. Instead of following a sales checklist, Jeff listened to what I needed and what I wanted in a new HVAC system. Our 1400 sq ft bungalow doesn't need multiple zones or the bleeding edge of technology. I also don't need to check my home's temp via my cell phone. We were able to purchase a 96.5% efficient and up to 15.5 SEER A/C unit for thousands less than a 96.7% efficient and 16 SEER A/C unit. The only difference in the furnace other companies recommended is that it had two stage heating. We could have upgraded to that model with Mechanical and still spent over $2000 less than the competitors. In the long run, the two stage heating unit isn't going to save me money, and it is going to make my house only maginally more comfortable. The best part is the warranty. The other companies I got quotes from had warranties of 10 years parts/2 years labor. You could upgrade to 10 parts/10 labor for anywhere between $400-$600. Mechanical just includes it. That's right, 10 years without having to worry about your furnance and A/C for no extra charge. A team of two workers showed up at my house at around 9 am and finished around 4 pm. Their work was clean and quick. They hauled away all of my old stuff and installed the new stuff beautifully. I was very happy with the process from start to finish and would recommend them to anyone.

I had Keith, their boiler specialist come out to take a look at the boiler on a Thursday. He explained the issues and was very nice and professional. He gave me a rough estimate of $1800-$2000 for the repairs but said he would call or email me the official amount it would cost. One week later, I had not heard back. I called the company and explained that he didn't get back to me. The lady apologized and said she would contact him and call me back. It is now five days later. I have since called another company because they had great reviews and their tech educated me about the boiler. He also repaired it for $1000 less. I was disappointed with this company.

Hi [member name removed] I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am for this. I am actually the one to blame. Keith came and talked to me about this and we discussed how to make the repairs and do it for much less than he originally quoted since the piping changes would not be as extensive. Nonetheless I became absent minded and dropped the ball in getting back to you on this. I have no excuse other than that I am human and I forgot. The young lady that spoke to you when you called had no idea that this was supposed to be taken care of by me and she passed the message along to Keith. Keith in turn did try to call me but I have been out of the office with severe migraine headaches for the past 4 days and did not respond to him or anyone else for that matter. In any case Keith should have known that I was out sick and at the very least, returned your call to let you know. I am truly sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused you and I will be refunding your original service call in full as well as including a certificate for a free furnace/boiler tune-up to use at any time you wish. For the record the quote that i was supposed to return to you was for $770.00. Again I am truly sorry and if there is anything I can do for you in the future please don't hesitate to call on me. I have 2 boilers and 2 hot water tanks that I needed to have serviced. While I was waiting on the provider to arrive, I managed to get one hot water tank going. They quoted me $244 for both water heaters and boilers to be fixed. He did the work and asked me to turn the boiler on as high as it could. When I came back we looked at my boiler and he kept trying to start the boiler but that wasn’t working. He told me it was broke and I’d have to fix that. I asked how much it was going to be and he said he’d have to check if he had the part first. I kept hearing a noise as he continued working and when he looked further, he told me I needed another control board. When I went to pay I asked for a receipt and he said they don’t give those out anymore. I said I needed a receipt. He called the company and was told they’d mail out the receipt. That following Saturday I called since I had not received the receipt and they said they mailed it but they’d mail another. After another week went by and I haven’t seen it they told me I’d have to come get it and they wouldn’t mail another one. I asked my sister in law to pick it up which she did. The bill ended up being $209. I forgot I had coverage for DTE energy and they came out to check the boilers and water heathers after their service was done. The man form DTE arrived and got the first boiler going and on the other one he asked me to turn the heat all the way up and before I even made it back downstairs he told me to turn it off because it was working. I feel they scammed me because the man from DTE energy was only here 15 minutes and had no issues starting the boilers.

They found a problem and repaired it with our ok. They are a very honest company. We went with them 3 years ago because another company told us of a problem. The problem was going to be over $1000 to fix. We received another estimate from this company that the problem would be under $100 to fix. This is why we choose this provider.

My neighbor recommended that I call Mechanical. He has spent multiple thousands of dollars with them to have a customized system built in his house. I've had bad experiences with other Heating and Cooling contractors not showing up on time, being rude, etc, and so he said to call them, and that they were the best. He knows Joel personally, and highly recommends him. Unfortunately I'll have to walk next door now and tell him that I unfortunately have to disagree and that my experience was that they are no better than the other ones I have encountered. I called and scheduled a service call for my air conditioning not working. The woman on the phone told me that they would be there between noon and 3PM. At 3PM I called and was told that the technician was in Ann Arbor, but not to worry, he would be there and quot;eventuallyand quot;. I scheduled my entire day around this appointment and now have wasted an entire afternoon. I have appointments this evening and am unable to wait. Worse than that she STILL cannot give me any idea at all what time they will be here. Poor customer service. She talked to me rudely, and was unwilling to do anything to help me. All she kept saying was that she was sorry. Sometimes sorry doesn't cut it! She should have simply tried to fix the problem. Maybe send someone out tomorrow first thing? But no... she made no attempt to help me. They may be good at what they do, but their customer service skills are terrible. For that reason alone I won't do business with them.

I'm certainly sorry that you feel that way but I can honestly promise you that my office staff would not have told you between noon and 3 pm. They would have given you 3 different options; 1. Between 8 am and noon 2. Between noon and 5 pm 3. After 5 pm. Option 3 would also have been quoted as an overtime rate. I sincerely apologize that you feel my office staff was rude to you but I can honestly say that I listen to at least 50 interactions of my staff and customers per week and the only time that I've ever heard them even be remotely "rude" is when a customer is screaming at them and/or being obnoxious. I sincerely apologize if this was not the case. We train our staff to be understanding, compassionate and empathetic towards our customers; especially when the weather gets extremely hot. People tend to be very short tempered when they're uncomfortable and it sometimes gets very difficult to communicate effectively. I would be willing, as a gesture of good will, to offer you a complete furnace or A/C tune-up to show you that it must have been an isolated incident at worst. Please feel free to call me anytime to discuss this matter further if you wish. Sincerely Joel Wensley President 313-277-7630

My mother's central air was blowing out air that was more on the warm to cool side as opposed to cold air, so I called this company, it took approx 4 days for them to come and the nice lady on the phone did tell me their was a little backlog, because they had so many request, thus, I was willing to wait, I looked at the backlog in a positive manner, maybe it meant they were very good. The gentle arrive on Thursday afternoon, he was very nice and pleasant, I asked a lot of questions and he answered them thoroughly and patiently, he stated the unit was old (put in1998) and dirty, no yearly routine maintenance have been done on the unit, he took the top off the central air unit, sprayed a solution and washed it down, he showed me how dirty it was via the water, he put some coolant into the unit and told me the unit had a leak, so it was time to change the unit, but it would work through this summer, however, my mother would probably begin to have more issues with it every summer.

My furnace had been acting up. It was blowing cold air and then would work for a while and then would not. I did see them on TV where they had talked about doing a furnace recondition where they clean it and check everything out to make sure that it is in good working order. I called and made the appointment. The gentleman came out from the company and cleaned a tremendous amount of dust out of my furnance. When he was done it looked like brand new inside. He restarted the furnace and it kicked right on. He told me about a rebate from the electric company and took my information so that I can get a $50 rebate that they would submit for me. My furnance has been running like a champ ever since and the temperature of the house seems to be really stable now. I am going to schedule this maintenance at least once a year and again with Mechanical. Didn't even try to sell me something or tell me that it was something else when it wasn't.

I had them come to quote a job. I am a Landlord and while the tenent is present he gives me the number (I think this was to pressure me to take it). I say "thank you" and when we exit the house I tell him I think the price is very high, $2700 for a 2 ton system that he tells me can be installed in 4 to 5 hours. So I question the price and he tells me if it is not to my liking we do not need to do business. Very Very unprofessional -- it is my money and I do feel I have a right to know what I am getting for it.

Dear Member I'm unsure what our consultant did wrong by giving you the proposed cost of an air conditioner that you asked for; we were called out to provide you an estimate to install central air conditioning and that was exactly what we did. There were no special instructions to keep anything hidden from a tenant. I spoke with our consultant about this and he said that you were in a hurry and wanted him to email you the quote so he saved a step by writing it down to show the cost on a piece of our letterhead and that he spoke nothing in front of your tenant, however you announced that the price was too high. After you said that the price was too high you then started to question our pricing methods and rather than get in to a argument on something that he has no control over he simply stated that if you weren't comfortable with our price that you weren't required to buy from us. I don't feel that there was anything unprofessional about that. I think it would have been more unprofessional to begin a pricing debate. Our prices are based upon many factors and most importantly they are based on our ability to make a profit in order to stay in business and serve the customers that need and rely upon us. Our price structure is based upon retaining 10% for profit in order to reinvest in our business to better serve our customers. I don't think that 10% is unreasonable. We have been in business for 29 years providing quality service to tens of thousands of customers but even we know that we're not a perfect fit for everyone. Just like restaurant's, some people are fine getting their steak from Ponderosa while others prefer Mortons. Its a choice you have to make for yourself but its unfair to label us as unprofessional just because you feel our price is more than you are willing to spend. If you would like to discuss this further I would welcome you call 313-277-7630 Sincerely Joel Wensley President

I thought that they were way too pricey. They had to come out the second time, the first time the fix didn't work. They did the quick fix and it only lasted about twenty four hours. They came back and did the same thing. At that point we didn't need any more air conditioning so, maybe working. I didn't turn it on. They performed the service as well as they could. I would not use them in the future.

We were called after normal business hours (5:00pm) on 9-3-2011 by the customer as he had no air conditioning. the technician advised the customer of the overtime diagnostic/dispatch fee of $119.00 which included us sending a professional technician to his home and fully diagnosing the problem. The customer agreed to the fee and we dispatched the technician. The technician diagnosed the air conditioner with a tripped high pressure switch that was due to a dirty condenser coil which would not allow air to flow freely through it. The unit was very overheated and the compressor would not start either, the unit was in poor condition and very aged. The technician cleaned the condenser coil and cooled off the compressor with water from the garden hose to try and get the compressor to restart, unfortunately it would not. The technician then explained to the customer that he could try a hard start kit to the unit to try and get the unit to start but there were no guarantees. The customer agreed that he would try it and the technician then installed the hard start kit. The unit did start and began to cool the home. The technician collected a total of $298.00 for the after hours repair. $119 for the diagnostic / dispatch fee, $57 for the condenser coil cleaning and $122 for the hard start kit. He also recommended to the customer that he consider replacing the unit as it was in poor condition and very old. On 9-7-11 we were called out to the customer's residence again for a "No Cooling call". We dispatched the same technician (at no charge) to their residence. the technician found that the high pressure switch had once again tripped. The technician reset the switch and monitored the unit but found no reason that the switch should have tripped. He explained to the customer that the unit was very old and that there could be parts that were intermittently failing but at that moment he could find nothing wrong. He again stated that the unit was very old and that he should consider replacing the unit since it was well beyond its life expectancy. I cant say for sure whether the customer was able to use the air conditioner the rest of the cooling season or not. I have to respect him and take him for his word. I live in the same area and used my air conditioner well into September however I understand that our personal comfort levels may be quite different. In an effort to explain our pricing structure (very pricey as the customer stated) I will give you the following explanation: Dear Member, I am sure you will feel different if you allow me to explain a bit about our business. First, we provide skilled labor, like an auto mechanic, medical technician, chef or other skilled trades. Skilled labor is more expensive than unskilled, day labor. Most of our charges are for labor, but we have a lot of other expenses too. We base our prices on our costs. Our costs are very different than that of parts sellers. Our prices are set so we can keep one dime out of every dollar. I think that’s fair. Out of every dollar we charge, we must pay for the following: • Our technician’s salary • Worker’s compensation • Social security benefits • Health insurance benefits • Uniforms • Ongoing training • Unbillable driving time • Tools • Truck payments • Truck maintenance • Truck insurance • Gas • Business insurance • Liability insurance • State licensing • Utility costs for our office • Telephone line charges • Cell phone charges (in order to communicate with our field technicians) • Telephone system maintenance • Internet charges • Office personnel to manage the technicians as well as keep track of customer service records, payments and future service appointments • Overhead and benefits for office personnel • Our computer system • Our software system • Professional Accounting and Tax Service • Legal services • Our after-hours answering service • Website maintenance • Yellow Pages advertising • Internet advertising • Other advertising • Membership in professional and trade organizations • Cash reserves to ensure we can honor all of our warranties and guarantees • People to fill out dozens of forms and reports for various government regulators • Sales and income taxes It costs a great deal of money to run an organization that is prepared to respond in a timely fashion for its customers. Whether you call us in a crisis because your comfort system has broken down during extreme weather conditions or if you just need a routine maintenance visit, you want a company that you can count on. That means we need all of the resources listed above to provide good service. Unfortunately, good service is not inexpensive. I make no apologies for our pricing. I learned a long time ago that it is far better to offer quality products and good service and explain our pricing structure every once in a while than to skimp and suffer with a reputation for poor quality or service and apologize for it forever. If you search long enough, I’m sure you can find someone who will charge less, though every licensed contractor is likely to charge far more than the price of the part. Some hire less qualified personnel, who make lots of mistakes, requiring you to nag them to come back and correct their mistakes. Some do not train their workforce to keep up to speed with current codes, practices, and new technology. Some drive beat-up old trucks, which may leak oil all over your driveway or in front of your home. Some do not conduct background checks on their employees or perform drug tests to ensure that you won’t have to worry about a service technician returning at night to rob you to support a drug habit (please do not scoff; this is a very real problem in our industry). Some do not carry the proper level of insurance to protect you in the event of a catastrophe. Some simply cut a lot of corners. I can understand how you might be upset. If you walked into a nice steak house for dinner, you might also be upset to learn that you could have gotten a piece of raw meat at the grocery store for a fraction of the price you paid. The actual coloring and tint used by many hair stylists is a fraction of the cost of highlights. My point is that the prices companies charge for services, repairs, and installations usually far exceed the cost of actual parts or material. And in our case, we come to you! I’d love to figure out a way to have customers bring their systems to our shop for repairs as it would greatly reduce the costs of doing business, unfortunately we all know that’s not possible. The cost of fuel alone to get our service vehicles to our customers’ homes can exceed the cost of some parts. When you called us, you may not have wanted the quality of service and level of service we offer. You did want our speed of response, however. The problem is that the quality of service, level of protection, and speed of response come together as a package. We can’t break them apart or isolate one aspect of our service from another. When you order a dinner at a restaurant and eat the meal, you wouldn’t go back to the restaurant the next day because you went grocery shopping and discovered the restaurant charges a lot more than the price of a raw steak. All I ask is that you please give us the same consideration. I’m not making excuses. I merely wanted to offer an explanation. I hope you have a better understanding than you did when you made this complaint. Your bill was $298. It cost us $268 to provide you with that service, including taxes. We only kept $30. Now that you understand a little more about our cost situation, I will make you a one-time offer you will consider fair because you will set the terms. I’m doing this because I value the goodwill we’ve generated through the years and do not want anyone to think they’ve been mistreated by us. One time only, I will allow you to set the price for the work just performed. Call me at 313-277-7630 and tell me what you think is fair. I will refund the difference. However, if you choose to use our services in the future, remember that you agree to do so with the understanding that we will not make any additional price adjustments. I trust you to do what you believe to be right and ethical. Tell me what you think is fair and I will refund the difference. Sincerely, Joel Wensley President

We have a contract with them. We have been using them for about 10 years now since they put in the new furnace for us. We got a notification couple of weeks ago that they moved. The yearly maintenance is $150 in case something happens. It is well worth it. They always come out right away because I have a contract. Their customer service stands out to me. I would recommend their timeliness. They come when you need them. Their responsiveness is excellent. They always call before they come. When they say they are going to be here in half an hour, they are here in half an hour. Their staff is professional. When we bought the furnace, the manager or the owner called to thank us for purchasing the furnace. They also asked us how their employees were. So, I thought that was very nice. They are a great company. In 10 years, we have never had a problem with them. I would use their services in the future too.
Description of Work: We use the services of Mechanical Heating and Cooling for the yearly maintenance of our furnace. They come every year in the fall. My last interaction with them was last fall. They come and check the furnace out. They make sure it's working fine when we turn the heat back on.

They were really great. The price was very reasonable. They were very thorough and honest. There were a couple of things they had to come back out for, but they fixed them right away. One hose popped out and some things like that. My mom is in her 80s and she was having problems getting the energy rebate. I don't think it had anything directly to do with Mechanical heating. I don't think it was their fault. I believe they told her she could get the rebate, but it was just getting hard for people to get the rebates. I don't know the whole story. My mom never did get the rebate that she thought she would get. She was disappointed on that. My sister works with contractors in Minnesota so she emailed us and told us what to make sure they do. We gave them the email so they pretty much did what they were supposed to do. They had to come out twice the same week to fix a couple of little glitches. A copper pipe wasn't tight enough and there was a problem with the fuse to the air-conditioner. It wasn't anything major and they came right out. Jeff is one of the owners in the company. He was every thorough. He came out to the house. We had two other people come out for estimates, but he took the most time and he was the most thorough. It seemed like the other guys just wanted the job. He really answered all my mom's questions. He was really good. We would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: My mother had Mechanical Heating And Cooling to put in a new furnace. We had central air put in. They insulated the attic and did what they were supposed to do.

Installation went very well; one problem piece of sheet metal was caught and redone by installers. New high-tech thermostat was thoroughly programmed and explained. My wishes for high efficiency and placement were complied with. Help with tax credit info was gladly provided. Operating experience throughout the heating season was perfect.

They were great. They were very helpful and friendly. I had called a number of companies to come out and give a quote. It was on a short notice since we were in a hurry. So they were quick and responsive unlike some of the other companies.

We retained this company after a bad experience with a company that had long serviced the boiler at our house. Mechanical is friendly, responsive, always on-time, and their work is thorough. Their technicians take the time to explain operating issues and any necessary repairs.
Description of Work: Mechanical has been conducting annual maintenance on our boiler unit (providing steam heat) for at least four years. This involved the annual cleaning, testing, and any repairs (when necessary).
