+ 1 moreThey removed old shrubbery and planted new shrubbery. They also do lawn care and fertilization. My lawn looks really good. Some of the flowers that they planted didn't make it, so they came out and planted them again. They have a specific person assigned to my area, which is nice. I like having the same person.

Description of Work: We have very tall arborvitae shrubs that form a natural fence between our yard and two of our neighbors. We hired Davey Tree Co. to lower in height, tie back branches that were pulling away from the shrubs, and generally shape the shrubs. We have used Jasso Tree Co. in the past, who had always done an excellent job, so we knew what we could expect. Jasso Tree as we knew it went out of business, so we relied on Angie's List for companies to contact. We had estimates from three companies and chose Davey Tree not so much for the price, but because we knew that it had been around for a long time. We also had two of our neighbors whose yards adjoin ours have work done at the same time. Because of the quality of the work and because I had recommended that we use Davey Tree, one of the neighbors no longer speaks to me. They did not lower the height of the arborvitae or tie back branches. Anything that protruded they just sheared off. The other two neighbors had them back several times to make the job better and one of the men said to her, " Lady, what do you want. We're not landscapers!!" I thought that was what we had hired. When I aked why he couldn't lower the the height of the shrubs, the answer that I received was that the sun was in his eyes and the shrubs were tall and he couldn't see a line of where to cut. Next time we had them trimmed we could pay more for that kind of job. (But that was supposed to be part of the job) Also the men arrived to do the job around 11:00 a.m. and at 12:15 all work stopped for an hour and 45 minutes because one of the men was receiving a safety lesson in our yard. I'm all for safety but why when you're on my job. My contact person with the company was EXTREMELY hard to reach. Did not return calls. I could not recommend Davey Tree Co. to anyone.

+ 2 moreWe switched to Davey after we felt the prior service did not get the results promised. Davey has, over the last couple of years, done a very good job, been quick to point out issues but not push additional treatments on us, rather advising us that they would keep an eye on things and let us know if anything further needs to be done. Usually we have not had to add any other services than the basics we signed up for. No hard sell for those added services, either. All interactions are pleasant, whether on the phone or in person, and their staff have all been very professional in their work, appearance and demeanor. We are going onto our third year using Davey starting early Spring 2012.
Description of Work: The rate given is the monthly rate. Davey performs all lawn and tree maintenance work such as fertilization, pest control, weed control, and the like throughout the non-winter months. They do not do our mowing, landscaping or spring and fall cleanup.

+ -1 moreI decided to go with them because he is an arborist and so he doesn't chop down trees if he doesn't have to but would rather trim, and the fact that he cares very much about the timing of cutting the trees, which is why the work hasn't been done yet. It is the time that you are supposed to do it for the health of the trees. Their estimate was for around $600-$700 to do the work. They were scheduled today but they didn't come because of the weather.
Description of Work: The Davey Tree Company came out and gave an estimate to trim a number of trees. They haven't actually come out to do the work.

+ 0 moreWe had a quote for some tree work but we haven’t done that as yet. Everything went as expected and the service was what they said it was going to be. The cost was what we got quoted and everything went pretty well and good. They come by when we are not home and do what they are supposed to do. They used to leave a report card in the lawn but I don’t remember too well when they were here last. I pay about $350 per year for basic lawn treatment, spray and fertilize. The workers who come are pretty good. I happened to be home one day and I spoke to one. He was a very nice guy. I was looking to seed the lawn again and he was getting ready to fertilize. We discussed that and he waited a week and half and he left so that I would get time to seed. He was very helpful and if he had to fertilize I would have wasted my time and then it would have killed my seed if I had not talked to him. There were no complications. The lawn is good and better than what it was a year ago when we moved it. It has improved and I don’t expect it to be overnight beautiful. My wife thought that if it was fertilized a couple of times we would get like a golf course lawn but I am very happy that we have made improvements. In a year or two it would look pretty good. I would recommend them to others. We got a couple of quotes and we decided to go with them so I guess their price was competitive if not great.

They are not the cheapest guys around, but you need to hire them if you want it done right. I would use them again. In fact, they are coming to my house in a month. The first job done by them was done at my mother’s house.

+ -1 moreI was not at home when they came out. So, they left me a detailed written estimate and they called me to follow up on the estimate. They basically did not want to do the job and so, they gave me an analysis for my lawn if I wanted to use their lawn services and they also left information on one of the trees. They did not want to work so closely to the fence as it was demolished. It was a storm damage situation. So, they did not want to work because there was a fence. The construction people told me that they would not remove the fence until the brush was removed. They were courteous and they followed up with a phone call to explain their estimate but the fact that they did not want to help me was not good. They also did not have any other recommendations.

+ -1 moreWe received a visit from an arborist employed by the company. Instead of trying to talk us into doing MORE work, he recommended we have fewer trees removed, and perhaps prune a few limbs off the trunk to provide a higher canopy for our backyard. That was impressive in that he was not trying to oversell their services. The company removed nine trees of all varying sizes; ground all of the stumps down to below ground level; pruned an enormous spruce and a couple of oaks; and put about a dozen shrubs, that we ourselves had removed, through their chipper so that we could have a substantial amount of mulch for our garden areas. All in all, a very satisfied customer!!

+ -1 moreFound Davey Tree Service on Angie's List to begin with. Called them and a service representative/arborist scheduled an appointment to survey the yard, assess the health of my trees and propose a feeding and treatment plan. The arborist showed up as planned, provided an estimate and informed me that upon receipt (Faxed) of the signed estimate by me, services would be rendered in approximately three weeks. Within two weeks a representative of Davey stopped and administered the antifungal to the tree designated for it. A week later as promised, another representative showed up and ferterlized all trees in my yard. Both visits were accompanied by a knock on the door to inform me of the visit and plans for the yard. The job was completed in no time at all, with minimal involvement by me. All trees were fed by deep root injection. When the assessment of my trees was made it was too late in the spring for pesticides but I'm only having trouble with one blue spruce and the arborist indicated the tree should be ok until next spring when the appropriate pesticide can be applied. But, we should keep an eye on it. Good job and so far so good.

+ 0 moreI was not able to meet with them at the time so they came out, faxed me a quote, I was able to sign up and fax back no hassle, no phone tag, no problem. They came out within the week to apply my first lawn treatment and treat a tree that I have that has been prone to bacteria scaling.
Description of Work: Contracted with Davey Tree to do 6 lawn treatments as well as tree service. This is my 4th year working with this company and they are top notch. Not the cheapest but certainly in the best category

They come twice a year and charge $65 per time. I was told that they were high priced but when I had other estimates from providers they had the lowest price. Their price was reasonable.

They will come out next year and put in new shrubbery. I paid $1200 for the landscaping. For the lawn and fertilization I paid $34 per month. My house was like a new house.

+ -1 moreIt went pretty well except it took several weeks to get the work scheduled. They had an arborist come out first to evaluate the work and provide a quote. He indicated once I sent in the contract, the work would be scheduled by the office staff. I sent the contract the next day. I waited 3 weeks before calling the office. They indicated the crew usually does the scheduling, but they went ahead & scheduled me right then & there. It was another 3 weeks before they came to do the work, but the scheduling miscommunication was the only snag. The crew showed up on time and went straight to work. They did the job as described in the contract. They cleaned up everything perfectly. They were done in about 2 hours which I thought was fast considering the size of the job.

I happen to meet Mr. Holden in my front yard (he was in the neighborhood and decided to drop by vs. making an appointment). I was extremely impressed with his knowledge of trees and grass as we walked around my front and back yards together. Mr. Holden gave an excellent sales pitch and I do believe his claim that he can make my grass look 300% better with his monthly weed/feed applications ($44/per visit), but we decided not to start a program due to personal budget reasons. He also gave estimates on fertilizing my trees and girdling the roots.
