We chose Ridgeway & Ernest due to their extensive familiarity with our neighborhood's outdated wiring and configuration. From the onset, Don and Will were candid about the considerable extent of our project - which we feared - and appreciated. They explained what we'd need to replace and identified problem areas with existing wiring, including the involvement of our co-op association. Every time R&E visited the job site for improvements, they were punctual, clean, efficient and courteous. Will carefully replaced our mess of a fusebox with a brand new unit and removed a bunch of obsolete and code-noncompliant wiring. In addition, R&E were flexible and patient with scheduling as our other project contractors delayed their progress. Don also provided helpful advice about possible future projects and electrical related needs, which saved us money and gave us a lead on next steps for air conditioning. We were very pleased with R&E. The quality of work was excellent and they were always professional, efficient and the work was high quality. We'd highly recommend them to others seeking experienced electrical contractors.

I did not get any discounts, but I think I got what I paid for. They were delayed, but it was not their fault. It was the county's fault because they needed an inspector to approve it. They came exactly when they said they would.

Don was very punctual and helpful when he came to provide an estimate, advising me on what I should and should not be concerned about regarding the wiring of my 1930's house. At my request they were able to do the work just a couple of days later. William (the electrician) was very professional and courteous, did a good job, didn't waste any time, cleaned everything up. I would definitely recommend them and use them again.

I set up an appointment for an estimate with Ridgeway & Ernest based on Angie's List recommendations. Brenda, on the phone, was professional and kind and set up an appointment immediately for the next day. I have had a problem with the lights in the bathroom and when I previously asked a local contractor in the area what he thought was the problem, he told me that i had to replace the entire fixture. Don from Ridgeway & Ernest arrived on time and was very professional. He looked at the fixture and determined it was just that the bulbs were old. He told me what to do to replace them. I am so blown away by their honesty and professionalism. The other contractor was going to charge me a lot of money to replace the fixture when it wasn't necessary. When the time comes to redo my bathrooms or any other electrical work I will definitely call Ridgeway and Ernest. If fact, I am giving their business card information to our building manager so she can pass it on to other people in the building. They might have lost this sale but they didn't lose a customer and i will tell everyone how great they are. Thank you.

The guy who came out for the service call on the 1st of March was amazing! He was professional, courteous, and identified that there was a short. He was able to reroute some of the power so that the washing machine wroked, as did the lights in the upstairs bathroom. He mentioned that they would need to provide an estimate to actually repair the short, and that the owner would set up a time the following day (March 2nd) and come out with an estimate. The agreed upon time was 10 AM. On Saturday, the owner calls and says he can't make 10 AM, and that it'll most liekly be 12:00 (noon) to 12:30. We agreed to this. At noon, he called and said he would be by the house in 20 minutes. We waited until 2 PM, and he never showed or called back. We were very disappointed. The initial experince with the service tech was so positive, that it is a shame that the owner just dropped the ball like this. Now I need to find another electrician to give me a quote to correct the root problem (the short). Very frustrating

Response from RIDGEWAY & ERNEST ELECTRIC
I am the owner of Ridgeway and Ernest and I provide all the estimates to the customers. I did make an appointment with this customer and I did talk with them on the phone and said I would be at their house in 20 minutes. I was at the house when I said I would be there and no one answered the door. I actually called the customer on my cell phone while I was standing at the front door and no one answered the phone. I thought this was extremely unusual because I just talked to her on the phone and I know I was at the correct house because it was the 2nd time I was there (I did the initial visit). The statement that I did not show up is incorrect. I waited for fifteen minutes than left. I have owned this company for 40 years and I have NEVER made an appointment with a customer and failed to meet with them.

I called a few places for someone who does electrical work for businesses, and Ridgeway & Ernest does. Finally! There was a mix up in the beginning when William the electrician thought it was a repair call but I called for an estimate. A call made to the office and Brenda was curteous and we discussed options. The electrician had already looked around the facility and the panel and preliminary determined what the problem was before committing more time to find out for certain what the problem is. I decided to let him fix the one fixture he thinks where the problem is by agreeing pay for the first hour. He did fix it within that time frame. Not only that, he also find out there are other two lights that has the same problem in the process, but bypass those light to get the other lights working in the meantime before he can come out and fix the other lights. Excellent work and fast.
Description of Work: Overall excellent work and experienced electrician that takes little time to determine the problem.

Everything was great. Don is super knowledgeable and gave us a honest, fair quote. Will did a great job on site and all the work looks great. We found out upon inspection the day of the service, that we'd need to replace the secondary breaker so instead of delaying the installation, Don called a few people, found the item, and had it ready to install an hour later. Great job!

I had a problem with several overhead lights not functioning properly in several rooms on the first floor of my house. I called Ridgeway & Ernest, and was able to schedule an appointment quite easily. They were very nice to offer me an appointment that was sooner than later. William arrived around 8 am for a scheduled 7:30 service call. Compared to the, seemingly, routine practice of service providers showing up at the end of a multi-hour service windows, I didn't mind the 30-minute wait. William was very personable and professional. He asked a few questions about the problem and then turned to investigating the problem. After ruling out any problems with the circuit box, he came back the first floor to figure out what was going on. The problem turned out to be a pocket door that was rubbing against wire in the wall cavity. The result was the wire became worn. William had to cut a small hole in the wall just above the light switch and repaired the wire and secured the wire housing so as to avoid future contact with the pocket door. Once he was finished with the work, William thoroughly cleaned up the work area. The entire job took two hours. I was very pleased with the job. I would definitely call Ridgeway & Ernest again, and recommend them to those needing electrical work.

I contacted Ridgeway & Ernest Electric to get an estimate for installing in my house an external 30 amp input plug connected to my breaker box, and a transfer switch, all so I can power my house from my portable electric generator. Don Bonnet arrived at my house promptly at the pre-arranged date and time (...a Friday afternoon...), inspected my house and my generator, and informed me that he would have to get parts from his supplier since he didn't have them on hand. He told me he would get an estimate to me the next day, Saturday, around noon. Because Hurricane Sandy was approaching the area, I asked him if he could install the system as soon as he got the parts? He told me he would get back to me, and could possibly do the install the following Monday, the day Sandy was supposed to make landfall in the DC area. Saturday afternoon I had not heard back from Don, so I called him. He told me his supplier didn't have the parts and that they would have to be ordered. I told him that was okay, but to please work up an estimate for me as I still wanted to do the install even if it had to take place after the storm. And that was the last I ever heard from Don. I never received the estimate. After the storm had passed, I called his business number and left a message asking about the parts and the estimate. To date, I have yet to get a call back from him. And just in case Don reads this, I found another electrician who did do the install for me.

We were retrofitting our kitchen with recessed lights, replacing a fluorescent light. Knowing there could be potential issues in the ceiling that we could not see and rather than checking to see if there was anything in the way, before cutting, the contractor proceeded to cut 3 of 4 holes before running into an air vent which completely changed the design we had planned. We are left with 3 lights instead of 4 and a dimmer that was not functioning properly (has since been changed out). The lights recommended by the contractor were EXTREMELY bright and hot - none of which was mentioned to us when he made the recommendation of which light to use. We are left with a kitchen that looks like an interrogation room and lights that have to always be left on half-dim. This may not be a problem if our main kitchen table light was not also on the same light switch, so that light too is now always on half-dim. The result is a completely botched job and we are not happy. This vendor is probably fine for smaller, wiring uncomplicated jobs, but if you're looking for solid advice on electrical issues, we would advise that you look elsewhere. We also spent quite a bit of time with the vendor on 2 separate occasions trying to get an estimate for under cabinet lighting in our kitchen. We were pretty specific about what we wanted and after all the time spent, expected an on-target estimate. What we got was an estimate that did not reflect our conversation at all.

The technician Alex, showed up on time but did not had different parts than what was required for my job. He called his office and had the receptionists bring the parts to my house while he worked on the areas he could. This impressed me because I am used to workers going-off to get the partsand waste my time, it showes lack of respect for my time. He made a very small cut on the dry-wall, just enough to rig thro his wiring and I was wowed, because the other quotes I received previously spoke about ripping through the drywall and after he was done, showed me how to temporarily patch it while I awai for additional work that I needeed to get done, and this wowed me because previous quotes, I got mentioned that the they would ripp-out the drywall and leave me with a whole mess to clean up. Alex was done in half the time I had anticipated and the job was done exactly as I had envisioned it. I was impressed
Description of Work: I wanted to upgrade a washer and dryer electrical port in my basement and shopped around for numerous quotes. Ridgeway & Ernest gave me the best quote. They showed up on time to survey / inspect what I was asking them to do. They sent the quote in a couple of days and called to follow up. They were responsive when I had further questions and agreed to a payment plan - which worked great for me. The day before the electrician came out to perform the work, their office called me to work out the final details and to find out if I had any other questins. I am very pleased with the work performed and I am in the process of hiring them for additional work. Thank you angie's ist for a great refferal! - Francis Siaya, Washington, DC

Spoke with Brenda, Don Bonnet assistant she gave me at time line: 1. Heavy-up install complete - July 7 2011 (it took almost two months to get an inspection) because Ridgeway did not do as agreed, they did not call them until late August to schedule the inspection. 2. Inspection completed by Christopher Brown - Sept 2, 2011 3. The request for the install of the meter to complete the heavy-up was not made until late October 2011 4. In Pepco system November 8th. Every time I would call Ridgeway, Don Bonet, had an excuse why Pepco had not come yet -blaming them. I got the telephone number that they claim to have called to schedule the completion of the work with Pepco the from Brenda who answer the phone. I called and it was the wrong department but PEPCO routed me to the correct person and the work was completed with in a week. Don Bonnet is a nice guy, but his follow through is poor.

The work had to be coordinated with the cabinet company and Ridgway and Ernest were extremely accommodating - arriving early to do the first part of the work and returning that afternoon to finish. When moving the box, the electrician inadvertently drilled through the wall into my neighbor's apartment. They fortunately realized it right away and only a tiny amount of damage was done. Don later went to the neighbors to apologize and they liked him so much they said they'd hire him in a heartbeat. Pretty unusual considering the circumstances. Anyway, I can't recommend this company highly enough. They did a great job.
Description of Work: I needed to have an outlet moved to make room for built-in cupboards, and the job was tricky because I live in an old building with plaster walls. Don came over and 'diagnosed' the situation and was also there the day of the work to make sure the person performing the work knew exactly what was needed. The job was more difficult than I had anticipated because the outlet being moved was also powering another outlet, so a new connection had to be established and run behind the new cabinets to the other outlet. Also, I wanted to have a new outlet installed higher up on the wall where it would be accessible after the new cabinets were in place.

We originally called for service on or about 10/13, and I explained I was home the next 2 days in the day if anyone was available during daytime, otherwise it would have to be a job done in the early evening the following week. I was told that a technician could probably make it out to my house in the next 2 days and I'd get a call 30 minutes before he left. Fast forward to the end of the following week and we hadn't received a call back. Called the company back and although they were immediately helpful, it seemed like my request from the previous week had fallen through the cracks. Was able to get someone out to our house that same day and the actual service itself was fast, efficient, and professional. The electrician did end up cracking off a small chip of paint some paint above the faceplate, but that could have been from the quality of our paint job. We will touch it up ourselves. Would probably use them again, but will take more care when scheduling a service appointment in the future.

At the end of a crazy week end dealing with terrible techs from RCN I had to put in an electrical outlet next to the fuse board to install a phone box. I needed it done immediately because I had lost phone service as a result of their work. I called to see if Ridgeway and Ernest could send someone soon and though it was the end of the day Don had someone in the neighborhood and sent them over before quitting for the day. They did the installation immediately, and were very pleasant and knowledgeable. What a relief after dealing with the opposite!

First of all, my mom was coming into town and I needed to have some electric repaired fairly quickly and they came the same day I called. My kitchen and basement lights ceased to work, and when I traced the problem to the breaker, the wiring was burned and degraded and I was really paranoid that I had a dangerous situation on my hands, as well as no kitchen or basement lighting, and my mom coming up from Florida. Then, William showed up earlier than they estimated, was very quick but was also very conscientious and professional. He not only fixed the problem, but he also looked over my box and found other potential problems which he also fixed. He took care of those little details that a lot of contractors leave for the homeowner (like cleaning up the work area, double checking that everything looks nice and has been put back together properly, etc.). He also took a few minutes to give me some advice on projects in the house, advising me on what he thought might be safe to do as "do-it-yourselfer" and what should be done professionally. He took a look at old wiring (my house was built in the 20's) and gave me some advice on what I should prioritize based on what needed to be brought up to code, and what could wait little longer, which gives me a great frame of reference for my home improvement budget. I love Ridgeway. I am SO HAPPY I found these guys. We have an old house with a laundry list of electrical jobs, and I will never consider calling anyone else. I am a customer for life. I wish they had a triple A rating.

Arrived on time, reviewed my list of jobs to do. Looked at the walls, floors, crawl space, and electric panel. measured everything. Gave me the detail of how difficult the job would be. Very professional and clearly pointed out where they would have to cut into walls which we would have to patch. My husband does that well, so we were good with that. He sent a detailed estimate within 48 hours breaking out various pieces of the job so I could pick and choose what I wanted done if not the whole job. Part of the job is putting in under cabinet lighting. He said he would get the lights that would not create heat in the cabinets. I was very impressed with his knowledge and ability to assess the job. Two guys came on time. They had to run new wires through the crawl space, the kitchen and living room walls in order to install the lights they way I wanted them. They installed the under-counter lights so they would all turn on with one switch. They add a switch to the hallway so I could turn on the overhead kitchen light from there as well as from inside the kitchen. This was a major job that they did very well. They took down my old dining room light and intalled a new one I provided. They installed two new sconces in the bathroom and a new exhaust fan. The fan took longer than expected as they had to add wooden frames to hold it. The frames should have been there, but weren't. Unfortunately, one guy tripped while in the attic and put his foot thru the ceiling. They sent a carpernter to repair the damage and add additional framing to the attic opening on their own dime. They were very professional, did great work and clean-up after themselves. We liked them so much, we hired them for another job installing an attic fan.
Description of Work: Gave me a very professional estimate on adding lighting to my kitchen and bathroom. Was very clear on where they would have to cut thru walls to do the job. Sent an estimate within a day. I hired them. They installed under-counter kitchen lights, installed a new chandlier in the dining room, sconces and a new fan in the bathroom.

Rue was on time and courteous. I have tried three times to replace these switches on my own. He told me everything he was doing and made sure his work was tested to my satisfaction before leaving. I would definitely recommend Ridgeway & Ernest to my neighbors and friends.
Description of Work: Reconfigured electrical wiring for garage and replaced switches. Replaced dual light switch in master bath.
