We are extremely pleased with the results. No more flooded basement! Greg and his crew were professional, explained everything to us and took their time to make sure that the job was done to our satisfaction. We also appreciate that Greg was here not only overseeing but also working along side his crew.
Description of Work: We were having problems with a flooded basement each time it rained. They installed a drain in bottom of the window well behind the garage and a catch basin. Ran pipe underground to left side yard to exit to street in front of house. Extended two rear downspouts underground into separate piping that also exits to street. Seeded where necessary and hauled away any excess dirt..

It couldn't have gone better. Greg and his crew arrived on schedule at 8:30 AM and completed the job the same day. The proposal price was the job price. We hardly knew they were there. After they finished they cleaned up, blowing my driveway clean. Greg only does erosion control, and related work and he does it very well.
Description of Work: Installed catch basin and pipe with connections to rain spouts to drain excess rainwater away from house and to relieve erosion. Installed a retaining wall to control a serious erosion problem. Re-estalished and refurbished stone and timber pathway along the side of the house.

Greg was wonderful! I highly recommend his expertise and knowledge of how to fix drainage problems. He listened to our concerns, did exactly what we agreed upon and completed the whole project in a timely manner. We have since had several severe rainstorms and our basement no longer floods. Plus the back yard looks so much better without broken gutters and corrogated pipe laying around.

Greg came out quickly to review the situation and make recommendations to address a long-term very serious problem with water pooling on my property from several adjacent properties. He custom designed a remedial approach that carefully considered the drainage issues that were unique to my situation. His focus was on developing the most effective solution at a price that was reasonable. As we proceeded, there was a need to add on new components, which he did adeptly and reasonably, pricewise. Most importantly, his installation resolved a drainage problem that had been plaguing my property for quite some time, and the excellent results were immediately apparent. I've recommended this company to others and will be happy to continue to do so.

Returned my call the same day. Arrived for estimate on time. We hired Greg based on other positive Angie's list reviews and we were not disappointed. The project was completed timely and care was taken to restore areas of the lawn which were distribed for drain installation. Hopefully we won't need any future waterproofing but if we do, we will definitely call Kuiper's again and highly recommend.

Called Mr Kuiper and made an appointment. He came and looked over the situation (sinking soil around the foundation of our house) and proposed a solution. I was impressed that he understood my concerns and knew what had to be done. He and his crew arrived on time. They did their work in competent and professional manner. It solved our problem. Greg was extremely knowledgeable and experienced and knew what was needed to fix our problem. He was very approachable and responsive. I would trust him.
Description of Work: Had 2 french drains installed; one in front and one in back of house where water was pooling and damaging house. Installed drain lines underground and dug under concrete walkway to connect drain lines, french drains and gutter downspouts so water is as far away from house and drains properly from property. We had a lot of water going into sump pump whenever it rained hard. So hard that the sump pump would run every 3 minutes. The drainage around the house was that bad. Greg fixed our problems. The sump pump doesn't even come on at all when it rains. He was fantastic. He knew exactly how to address our problems. It was expensive since we had a lot of drain lines placed and we have a large house.

I appreciated Greg's approach from day 1. He responded within a day to my message, and came out to look at the situation and give a quote soon as we could mutually arrange it -- a very reasonable time. He explained his take on what was happening in a way we could understand, answered our many questions, and took a triage approach, recommending we do a reasonable first step and see how that works before larger more drastic measures. Greg himself was here doing the work, along with his crew, and the yard looked exactly as he said it would afterwards (seed planted on the regraded areas and the areas were the drainpipes were extended outward). Foremost is that Greg's work solved the problem. The water we were experiencing in the crawl space was taken care of and no longer a problem. I recommend Greg any day for grading issues.

Had a great experience with Greg! We needed the whole perimeter of our house regraded. His price point was right on target with other quotes we had received. But Greg went the extra mile and installed a drain that would allow us to keep our outdoor AC unit in place (instead of risking having an HVAC company move it and break it), and he didn't raise the price much. He and his men worked hard, were professional, and did a great job. Only drawback is that he does NOT take credit cards so we had to transfer the cash from our savings to our checking, but he was very patient in waiting for the transfer to clear for a couple days. Great job, and I would definitely use him again!

It went great. When we bought our house we knew that there was a drainage problem, after we moved in we discovered that it was more extensive than we had thought. It needed to be moved up on our priority list and fixed before winter. Greg came by to give an estimate and he proposed the most extensive work of the three folks who came out and looked at our drainage issue. We asked him for further clarification and his plan seemed to make sense to us and to take into account the particular challenges of our property. His estimate was half the price of one competitor and a little bit higher than another. But the folks with the lower estimate were not proposing a solution that was as extensive. Greg came and did the work while we were at work one day. When we came home, everything was neat and clean and finished. He was willing to work with our tight schedules and trusted us to mail the check. It rained really hard this week and ... the drain is working, the water is no longer coming into the basement and the backyard is no longer a mud puddle!

As indicated by my rating, he performed well what was agreed to in the written contract. He was professional and prompt. The job was completed in two days. He also was prompt in returning to correct problems caused by severe and long rains a couple days after the job was completed. The rain uncovered some of the buried pipes on both sides of the house that had been covered with sand, seed, and straw before the grass could grow. The rain also had come around the retaining wall on the left side of the home with signs of erosion where the water had been. The severe rain also indicated that overall the erosion problem that "I thought" was being fully corrected was only partially corrected. It was clearly improved. To his credit, he was quick to respond to recover the uncovered drain pipe and provide additional and angled retaining wall to prevent water from coming around the edge of the one retaining wall. Having expressed to him my concern that the erosion was not completely done, he responded with a detailed email which included that he had said during initial discussions that he thought his proposal would take care of the problem, but that it might not and the erosion might require additional work. But he thought it was prudent to start with this level of work. (I'm paraphrasing, but I do have the email he sent.) My problem is that I do not remember him saying that. Because we had bids from 4 groups and because I cannot express confidence in my memory, I simply cannot say with any degree of certainty what he said in this regard. My suggestion for working with any contractor is that you get a clear statement in the written contract as to whether the proposal is to correct totally the problem (assuming the problem can be solved). After exchanging emails which included his suggestion that another french drain behind an existing retaining wall might solve the problem, I asked him what he would charge to install that additional drain. He did not respond to the request for a price. I assumed he did not want to continue a working relationship with me (which could certainly be wrong). But I did send a second email about a price and also did not get a response. Let me close by saying that I think Mr. Kuipers is a fair man and that the work that he does is good work. Giving him a fair overall rating has mainly to do with my expectation that my erosion would go away (mostly) when he finished. As with so many things, expectations vary and all of us would be better served by making sure that expectations are clearly stated in writing. I have tried to be fair and reasonable in my comments. I wish Mr. Kuipers success in his work and hope that my experience will help him and others.
Description of Work: My home in built on an incline and has a fair amount of soil erosion especially when there is heavy rainfall. As part of an overall landscaping project, we got 4 estimates including one from Greg Kuipers to correct the soil erosion problem. His written proposal, which he performed well and completely, included building two retaining walls at the top of the incline in the yard with french drains. One wall with french drain behind it on the left side of the home was connected via Y connector to a six inch drain pipe that terminated further down the incline and exited to drain onto the front grass area. The other wall with french drain behind it exited onto an adjacent field. He also corrected (put in incorrectly by another person) drains from downspouts on both sides of the home.

Lots of pluses to report: Greg was prompt, courteous, informative, and quite clearly very knowledgeable and experienced; he was adaptable when unforeseen circumstances arose and effectively communicated/coordinated with my architect and construction contractor as needed; his assistants appeared very skilled in their own right (not just "helpers"); and things happened when he said they would, including accurate anticipation of how weather conditions would impinge on the job. Both because of the demolition and the very large quantity of soil that needed to be removed, there was A LOT to haul, which he did effectively, and my property was left in very good shape, ready for the construction folks to come in. I expect to hire him again to install external drainage pipes (in the newly-graded areas) when the construction is completed.
Description of Work: Greg and his crew performed demolition (of existing an concrete patio) and substantial re-grading of soil in my back and side yards, preparatory to construction (by another company) of a new screened porch and patios at the back of my house. It was important that Greg meet my architect's specifications for re-grading that referred both to the upcoming construction job and to correction of existing water leakage into my basement.

Excellent service. Came across Kuiper's Landscaping on Angie's List while searching for someone to address drainage issues on one side of the house. Greg, the owner, came out for an estimate on a Sunday afternoon within a day of contacting him. He explained what needed to be done and answered any questions we had. Greg and his crew showed up on time, worked efficiently, and cleaned appropriately. I recommend and would use them again.
Description of Work: Kuipers installed a catch basin with external French drain on one side of the house. They also connected four downspouts on the back, side, and front of house and ran them all to the street. They ran the drain pipe through and patched the curb.

I had called three waterproofing people about house leaks, there was a drainage problem. We were most impressed with Kuipers Lanscaping and water proofing. We haven?t had the work done yet, but we are going to call him soon. One of the people whom we called would have done only a superficial job that wouldn?t last for long and the other charged thousands of dollars more. He is from the local area and he gave us recommendation from around for people that we could call. He was very direct and honest. Obviously, he was experienced and knew what he was talking about.

Requested estimate for the work I wanted done. Mr. Kuipers was on time. He explained what had to be done. Is very knowledgeable. He explained when he could do the work. He gave me a written proposal on the spot. A few days later I accepted his proposal. His men were diligent and worked steadily. The result was quite lovely. When the work was finished, Mr. Kuipers explained completely what had been done. In general, I found this to be a very professional company. I will use them again.

Extremely well. I had read about Greg Kuipers on Angie's list. I called him and came mid-October and looked at what to do (I wanted water to run as far away from my house as possible, having had a humit basement over summer). He was ready but I told him to wait until other things had to be done first (remove some trees around the house; change gutters and downspouts). Then the snow around Christmas delayed everything even more but finally he could come on Jan 20 and got all done perfectly. I am very happy. Let's see what happens this summer in my basement...
Description of Work: Regrade along front, right side and left side of house and mulch; extend right rear and left front downspouts underground; install catch basin in a low area and run solid pipe underground from basin into front downspout pipe; dig out slight swale; seed + straw over swale + pipe' haul debris.

Kuipers' prices are reasonable, but beware: you get what you pay for. The job was botched from start to finish. Kuipers and his workers ruptured an existing in-ground drainage pipe and did not bury the pipe they installed deeply enough. As soon as it rained, we had a mudbath in the area where the water was supposed to drain out. Hornets found it very attractive and started nest-building. The sod was also improperly installed over the re-graded areas (which of course included the trench areas). The result was that we also had mud borders alongside the sod strips that were on top of the trenches. Where re-graded, re-sodded lawn joined existing lawn, there was a significant difference in elevation basically because they just laid the sod on top of the exposed dirt without making the least effort to even things out. We ended up with a "step-down" between new sod and existing lawn. We got them to come back after waiting 3 weeks. They worked in the yard for a while and then left without our knowledge and before we had a chance to inspect their work. There was so little improvement that to save ourselves further grief we hired a different contractor, and for an additional $1,500 had Kuiper's mess corrected.
Description of Work: We had a drainage problem in our back yard with soil erosion at the top of the outside stairs into the basement and underneath our (adjacent) deck, and we had a lesser grading problem near a basement window well. Kuipers was supposed to regrade all areas, install an in-ground drainage pipe extension from the rear downspout, and install an in-ground drain at the top of the basement stairs that would connect to a separate drainage pipe. Sod was to be installed on all re-graded areas.

Response from KUIPERS LANDSCAPING & WATERPROOFING
I have been in business in Montgomery County for over 27 years and have countless satisfied clients. In fact, most of my business comes from the recommendations of happy customers. Furthermore, I have never had a complaint filed against me with the Better Business Bureau. Potential customers are encouraged to contact any of my many excellent references. Concerning the complaints of the members: I gave an estimate on July 11, 2009 for the family. I recommended a drainage system, grading, and a window well to fix their water problems. The proper installation of the drainage system involves an accurately sloped trench holding a solid pipe from the downspout and catch basin. Water travels through the pipe and exits the ground where it discharges the collected water in an area downhill from the house. He wanted the end of this pipe to be underground- covered by soil and grass. I asked him where he thought the collected water would go if it were trapped beneath the surface. He had no answer for that. He continued to insist that the pipe not exit the ground and did not understand that this is standard design for a proper drainage system. Finally, he insisted that a catch basin be installed at the end of the drain. This is not recommended but they insisted and so I did what they wanted. In addition, she wanted me to sod over the drainpipe as well as the re-grading. I told her that I did not recommend putting sod over the pipe because thin strips of sod tend to dry out on the edges and that it will not be as level as using seed and straw. She insisted on using sod so that is what I did. Unfortunately, while trenching, I cut through the existing underground sump pipe and my worker connected it into our new pipe instead of hooking it back to the old pipe. The couple was not pleased with this so I returned to the members' and switched the pipe over to the old pipe. I completed the job on August 7, 2009 and she was very happy. She even tipped my employees. A few days later, she called and complained about a few problems. I stopped by the following day while she was not home and planned to call her the following night. Unfortunately, I came down with swine flu and was very sick for 6 – 7 days. While I was in bed both the members called and left messages on my answering machine threatening a lawsuit. I called the following day and left a message that I was sick and would call and come out to fix the problems when I got better. About three days later, when I was feeling well again, I contacted the members and discussed the issues. Ultimately, I fixed everything they were not happy with and I am not sure why they are still complaining. They do not seem to have an understanding of how drainage works. They insisted on doing the job the wrong way. Although I addressed all of their concerns, I was unable to satisfy them. I am sorry that I could not. Thanks, Greg Kuipers
