This is a good outfit...the receptionist lady was polite and followed up, the plumber assigned was a Grohe specialist as promised, knew what he was doing and arrived pretty much on time - calling ahead to warn about a potential rain induced traffic delay. All in all, I'm satisfied and happy every morning now that my shower is working again. While $400 was a bit steep for an hour's worth of work, it seems standard for this work and is consistent with another estimate i had got. What I appreciated was that the Angie's list discount of $25 was automatically applied...I didn't even have to ask. I would use them again.
Description of Work: Replaced the existing malfunctioning Grohe shower diverter with a replacement kit I had purchased separately.

The lady who answered the phone and scheduled the appointment was extremely nice and professional, that set the tone for the whole experience with JH Peterson. I had a kitchen sink backed up with Hurricane Irene on the way and I wanted it taken care of before the storm hit, so I was looking for a company that could come out same-day. JH Peterson not only sent someone out the same day (a Friday), but the plumber even arrived early. He explained everything to me, was careful with his equipment and clean-up, and did a fine job. Apparently some of the reason why the drain had backed up was lint and string from the washing machine, so he took the time to show me how to install a lint trap on my washing machine, which he didn't have to do but I appreciated.
Description of Work: Snaked kitchen sink drain.

Overall, the job went well. They were able to fix the problem and now our tub works very well again. We always recommend JH Peterson Plumbing when neighbors or friends ask us for referrals. Fortunately, we don't need plumbing help often but these are the people we call when something goes wrong. They make a serious effort to hire quality professional plumbers. If someone doesn't work out, they are no longer on the staff. If you work with JH Peterson, you know you will get an experienced good plumber and they stand behind their services.
Description of Work: We have a jet tub in our basement bathroom and for years we could not get enough water pressure to run the shower head or fill the tub up in less than 90 minutes. Earlier this year, we finally decided to call JH Peterson and get the tub fixed. It involved cutting through part of the wall in the room adjacent, so Peterson's recommended Leo Jacques for our contracting work. Brian was the plumber who completed the work for our tub and plumbing. He discovered that when our house was replumbed years ago (copper replacing plastic) the team that did the replacement work put the valves in backwards or upside down. This caused the pressure to wear away the parts until they no longer worked correctly, and this also destroyed the faucet fixtures. He removed and inserted the valves correctly in the hopes he could reuse our current faucet fixtures. It didn't work, and he had to go in and undo all the work he had done before. It involved welding so was quite involved and time consuming. He didn't charge us any more money for trying to make the old fixtures work. After Brian reconfigured the pipes the second time, he highly recommended a Delta fixture that he had recently installed in another house. This was an excellent recommendation and we really like it despite the fact I am not a fan of one piece faucet fixtures. It took several weeks to complete the project because parts had to be ordered and Leo Jacques (the contractor) had to come in and finish off the tiles and walls. He was a great recommendation and we hired Leo to do more work in our home and we hope to get on his schedule later this year for additional work. When I complained about how long the job was taking, the company apologized and Brian fit me into his schedule to complete the installation of the fixture.

Our technicians are trained and trained to give value on our jobs and obviously we failed on yours. The technician should have offered to check the entire plumbing system while he was there and give you a written report on any deficiencies they might have found. The technicians are also supposed to locate and tag any valves, including the main service and water heater. If this did not occur, I would like to know so that this does not happen again. As far as what we stock on our trucks, we only stock what we know works and can stand up to our (2) year warranties. The main reason we do not have a selection basically comes down to space allotment in the box of the truck. What Jeff installed in your home is a top of the line Toto unit and even includes a soft close seat that retails for over $60. If you would be so kind and contact me directly at jhp@JHPetersonPlumbing.com, I would like to offer you a further discount.

He came that day and was on time. He offered to look for the leak, but my husband had to leave, so he wasn't able to search for it. I felt that their pricing was too expensive. I got a quote for a water heater and they quoted me 1200 and the other quotes I got was for 700. They guy, Ray, was fine. He was professional and nice and handled my kid very well. He also offered to do a couple of other things while he was here to fix my water heater on another date. He unplugged one garbage disposal and checked another. It was very nice of him to do so. I had to hire Master Plumbing to come out and do the sump pump work and paid them $400.

In addition to the $59 for the initial appointment, JHP provided an estimate of $1318 for the total, arguing that fixing the outside spiggot would require (difficult) access through the crawlspace. Given the high cost, We decided to contact another plumber. His estimate came at $800 for exactly the same work. He completed the job quickly without even looking at the crawlspace. Based on this, I would suggest not trusting blindly Angies ratings. Shop around...

I would like to thank you for taking the time to post your comments. Good or bad, we can always learn. I am not aware of what transpired at your home, but I would like to respond to your post. The thing that I see that stands out here is the lack of perceived value that JH Peterson Plumbing offers. As in all things in life, there are apples and oranges and in some things, like this job for instance, may not be that easy for the laymen to decipher. I do not know what products and or warranties the other company may offer, but I can state ours. We use only OEM (original equipment manufacturer) products when making repairs. While the costs are substantially higher for these products, they do meet the manufacturer’s specs, unlike a generic part. Because of the products we use, we are able to offer (2) year warranties on our repairs. Non OEM products may work just fine, but we choose not to use them. We also randomly drug test and background our technicians, train them every week on professionalism and the technical aspects related to our job. While on site, they offer to perform an inspection of your plumbing system including locating and marking valves, and making note of any deficiencies they may find. dispatch Using your statement, “without even looking at the crawlspace” after our technician said “…would require (difficult) access through the crawlspace” I would like to respond to that. Not so unlike the medical profession, each plumber may have different thoughts on a preferred direction to do a replacement/repair. I can use the example of my recent knee replacement. After a failed meniscus surgery, I decided to get other opinions and then decided on the approach I thought was best. As far as I am concerned, I made the right decision with the right surgeon. But who is to say, the others were not only correct, but they might have given me “more”. The situation may have been similar here. While one may have fixed the immediate problem, the alternate may have been to correct it so it does not happen again. Because we seemed to have failed on all levels here, I have authorized the office to refund the fee of $59.00 and hope I have explained ourselves here.

We had a problem with some draining in our bath tub and I called a few people. These were the first guys that called us back. They came out right away. Even regarding this problem, I called them and they were there that same day to do the work. These guys are outstanding and I plan to use them again for any plumbing related jobs. They don’t have anything to improve upon. They do a really good job and they are fast. They were a little pricey. We would use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I used JH Peterson Plumbing. I last used their services within the last three or four weeks, on May 4th. He fixed our leaky valve that went to our outdoor spigot. Our toilet stopped flushing and needed repair. The shower has a Grohe fixture that has intimidated other plumbers in the past. Our Peterson plumber was clearly very familiar with the Grohe fixture, and was able to figure out that it was a minor problem. He fixed it without having to take it apart. He was very helpful and knowledgeable. Did a quick walk through of the whole house, pointing out things that we might want to think about having done but he wasn't trying to talk us into work. I signed up for Peterson's concierge service on the spot and think I have finally found a reliable plumber.

Our major problem has been the lack of communication with the principal, John Peterson. We contacted him several months ago to let him know that the radiator his company installed in the office is not heating up the room to a comfortable temperature. The first person to come to look at the issue after we complained was the same person who installed the radiator in the office. His advice while at our home was to open the office door to let more heat in. He told us he would get back to us with a proposed solution to our problem. We never heard from him, and when we called the office to inquire on his whereabouts, we learned he had been fired. In Feb. or March 2011, we asked that John Peterson come look at the problem. John Peterson had conducted the initial assessment to determine the size that the new radiators would need to be. He did come to the home to look at the situation. I explained that the office does not get warm enough, and asked what we could do to fix the problem. He said he would get back to me. It is now the beginning of May, and we have not heard from him. During that visit in Feb. or March, he said that if he had seen the size of the radiator in the office (the one we were replacing), then he would have been able to size the new radiator properly. At that same visit, I also pointed out some minor mistakes his workers (including the one who had been fired) had made when connecting supply pipes to the boiler. I reminded him of a leak that his workers had caused in the winter which required draining the heating system in order to make the repair. It is clear to me that he has no intention of working with us to fix the problem in the office. We have hired another plumber to fix Peterson's work. Not only are we paying twice to get the work done properly, but Peterson doesn't even have the courtesy get back to us. His company's service and professionalism are extremely disappointing.
Description of Work: We had a multi part project in our home built in 1913. The bulk of the work included: installing 2 new Baxi radiators and supply and return lines in basement; installing new control valve on radiator on top floor; replacing existing radiator with new Baxi new radiator in the office.

I must say that I am dismayed with some of the misinformation here. There must be a coincidence that this letter is written the just day after our letter what our solutions is. Our solution is to remove the unit and install larger unit based on over sizing percentages, at no charge what so ever. It also came to mind that the unit sent out by the distributer may not be the unit we ordered. I did cover this in the communication yesterday. I will also apologize for the amount of time that has passed before answering your email, but the email you sent on April 27th was in my spam folder that I did not catch until clearing it yesterday. I did explain this. I was never contacted directly about this problem on the job as stated. We have recorded dispatch made by phone to our office for your home (2) days after your dissatisfaction. The only technician that I am aware of that they dispatched to your home was the installing technician along with a helper. This technician was let go because his work o longer met our expectations and he was not relaying important information to the office. I was never made aware of the statement “was to open the office door to let more heat in”, nor the leak you speak of until I was made aware of it when in the house. My appointment book shows a call from your home to schedule me to look at the install on March 31 after 1pm. I arrived that day around 2:45 and agreed that we needed to find a solution. I did also note that a zone valve was installed incorrectly but does not affect the operation. Trying to determine what went wrong, I did ask what was the actual size of the radiator that your husband removed? I was then told it was a very large radiator which is probably why the new radiator that is properly sized for the room does not heat as well. When I left the home that Thursday I made it clear that I was leaving the country that weekend for over 2 ½ weeks and would get to this when I returned. I returned to the office on April 27th and made what I believe to be the best solution. I do admit I failed to send it out before the afternoon of April 28th due to my work load. I am in the Silver Spring office only on Wednesdays and Thursdays and it is on my desk to be handled on Wednesday May 4 as mentioned in our communication yesterday. From: John H. Peterson Sent: Monday, May 02, 2011 6:08 PM Cc: John H. Peterson; Anne E; csr#2 Subject: RE: Disappointing Work and Service by Peterson Plumbing I just found this in my spam folder and it is not nor has it been my intention to ignore your situation. I do not change spam settings, but I do check them before I delete the folder. I did not say I would try to get to you before I left and since I was at your home on Thursday and I left on Saturday, so I did not have time. You did send an email asking me to try to get it done before I left, but I did not think it was a critical situation and you knew I was leaving the country for 2+ weeks. My 1st time back in the office was as luck would have it, April 27th and your job is completed on my desk, I just have not sent the info out. Our solution is to install a larger Baxi panel that is the percentage larger as the radiator the husband removed and we never saw. As I stated in the past, if we had seen the radiator your husband took out, we would have had a better idea on the size. I did size the room and ordered the size needed for the room, but now as I write this, the rep may have sent the wrong size. All my specs are for a radiator that is sized correctly for your room. As I do not go into the office but on Wednesdays and Thursdays, I will check the order and what I see that is on your wall. The whole problem may be they sent the wrong radiator. I know that Kensington Plumbing recommended a separate zone for that room which is a fix, but one that I would not use. The boiler would now be bouncing on limit and firing at full 140K to heat an 11000 BTU room. Not energy efficient, but it does work. Addressing the zone valve put in backwards, as I stated that is not a dire problem. The water is turned off on the reverse side of the valve, which again works. I would definitely change this to close this matter. Somehow the office did not receive this email either, because if they did they would have sent a copy it to me. I will be in contact with you on Wednesday when I return to the office.

They were very good. We were pleased. It was an emergency service and they really bailed us out and took care of us. When our sump pump went out in the middle of the night, they were the only people who called us back. We asked the plumber about another plumbing issue that we also were dealing with and asked him if we needed to get that fixed right then, but he said it could wait, but if we signed onto their concierge service we would save money on the work they were performing, as well as future projects, so we did it. He gave us money saving advice.

We were very pleased with the work done by JH Peterson Plumbing Company. The plumber was on time. He was knowledgeable. He was professional. He finished his work quickly and did it right. Their pricing was reasonable; however I can?t be sure as I really have no basis for comparison. Honestly I can't answer if the price was good or not because we had them come out, they did the job and we paid them. All I can say is that the price didn?t seem exorbitant but I can?t say if it was really a low blow price.

The service was excellent! Everyone from the office staff to the contractors were extrememly accomodating, thorough and personable. The plumber returned my call promtly over the weekend and even took the time to call me back once more to make sure I had everything squared away until he could see us first thing Monday morning. We ran into a real problem because our utility closet had been built after the water heater was installed, leaving no room for it to be removed through the doorway. To our surprise, JH Peterson actually had a drywall contractor on staff. The drywall contractor went above and beyond the call of duty to get to our house proceeding a major snow storm prediction, to cut through the wall and replace it with a fully insulated, removable panel that we will be able to access for many years to come.
Description of Work: We recieved a full assessment of our hot water heater, a clear presentation of our options, and an estimate of all work. JH Peterson removed our damaged hot water heater, had a new one delivered within an hour of signing the contract, and installed a completely new system.
