Description of Work: Benjamin Franklin was called out to my home to clear a sewer backup. I thought I would get good service, especially given their high prices. After initially clearing my sewer line the problem came back. When I notified them the problem had come back they were not willing to come back out to determine why the problem was recurring unless they charged me again from the beginning. They also never called in the issue to WSSC (local sewer and sanitary commission) and gave me wrong information regarding where my sewer line runs to my home. I ended up calling in another plumber who cleared the line, called WSSC, and stayed engaged until we determined there was a piece of snake coil stuck in my line! I contacted Benjamin Franklin regarding this issue and they never offered to come check it out or to contribute towards fixing my line. I ended up hiring my own contractor to remove the snake coil that I believe Benjamin Franklin was responsible for. We were without water/sewer services for 3 months and left with a very large bill for excavating and repairing our sewer line! | |I would stay away from Benjamin Franklin Plumbing at all cost. I was completely dissatisfied with their work and the way they avoided taking responsibility for their mistakes.

They were efficient and knowledgeable about a new technology. They knew everything about the tankless water heater. I was satisfied with their work. I received cheaper estimates, but I felt that Ben Franklin Plumbing was more knowledgeable about the product.

We saw a water patch on the ceiling of our first floor - it was coming from our bathroom toilet. We called Ben Franklin and Tommy came out on time (as always) and investigated. He said the seal around the toilet most likely broke and was creating a slow leak under the floor. He recommended he take the toilet out, we have the floor retiled, and then he would come back and put the toilet back on. He said that if we use a plunger often, that sometimes causes the seal to break. I admitted that that we have had problems with the toilet overflowing and that yes, we often have to use the plunger. The toilet was a builder-grade toilet - not very well made and I wanted one with a deeper throat and a stronger flush. Tommy recommended a Toto toilet and we decided to go with it. He removed the leaking toilet. Then he recommended we puncture a small hole in the ceiling where there was a water mark, to air out any dampness. It was easy coordinating with Ben Franklin to come after the tile work was completed. They always come on time - just like their motto says. Chad came out the second time to put the new toilet in. He had to install a flange extension, which was not originally quoted, but he showed me why, and he actually pulled me in to show me after he put it on because he wanted me to know that he actually did it - I liked that. He tried to put the pedestal sink leg back in, but discovered that our builder had incorrectly installed the sink. The builder glued the back of the sink to the wall so that it could not be raised (with the new tile in, our floor was now about 1/2 inch higher). Chad called his manager to find out options. I decided to have him leave off the sink leg until my husband and I could decide the best way to fix this new issue (see my other report for more on that). Meantime, Chad said we should take care not to lean on the sink because it wasn't resting on a base (I appreciated that because I have 2 young kids). I was happy with the job. About a week later, I had noticed there was water on the floor of our HVAC closet. I didn't know if it was coming from our furnace or our water tank. It was a very cold day and all the HVAC companies were booked and unavailable. I called Ben Franklin on a whim and Tommy came right out. He ascertained it was coming from our heater's condensate pump. He determined the vinyl tube connected to the pump had buildup in it, so he cleaned it for me. He said that since they were out here so recently and cleaning the tube was minimal, he wouldn't charge for it. He told me to follow up with our HVAC people on this issue during our regular maintenance appointment scheduled later in the week. But he did fix the problem and thanks to him, we didn't have to shut off our heater during a cold winter week! What a lifesaver!
Description of Work: Investigate a leaking toilet and install a new one. Came back and cleaned out furnace condensate pump for free!

Benjamin Franklin plumbers are fast! I called in the morning, and they gave me a two hour window for the work that same day (and this was not an emergency call, so no extra charge for that). The plumber arrived right on time at the beginning of the window. He fixed the problem with no trouble in about half an hour. Given their flat pricing, I probably paid more than perhaps another plumber would have charged for such a small job, but the fact that it got fixed so quickly was well worth it in the end. I would definitely use them again.

The service was good. The guy actually went down stairs and saw that the lights weren't working and got them to work and it's not even a part of the plumbing service. He was very nice and respectful.

We hired an inspector to check out a problem we were having with our heater shutting down during cold winter months. Our inspector said that condensation was building up in the pipe, thereby shutting down our heater. He said that a plumber could install a stand pipe to our heater and we could do away with the outside pipe completely. Tommy from Ben Franklin came by and he was confused. He looked at all the pipes and said that the pipe in question was not the pipe draining condensation, but an exhaust pipe. He said that he could install a stand pipe, but that would not fix our heating problem. He suggested we call our inspector again to double check his findings. We were not charged for the visit. It turned out that Tommy was right. We have used Tommy a few times before and he always seemed to know his stuff. We will definitely continue to use him.

The solution was very simple, so what I think is that if they knew that was the problem, then they could have told me on the phone so that I could try fixing it myself. I had already tried by pressing the reset button. But instead, they came to my house and charged me $85 just to do that in five minutes. In the end, they will lose out because they charged me that day, but I'm not calling them again.
Description of Work: The disposal in my kitchen was not working, so with a tool they worked underneath it, turned the thing, and freed the gears. It took them around five minutes.

MORE OFTEN THAN NOT IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DIAGNOSE A PLUMBING PROBLEM OVER THE PHONE. THE SOLUTION TO MANY PLUMBING PROBLEMS, INCLUDING A JAMMED DISPOSAL, IS NOT ALWAYS SO SIMPLE. YOU COULD LOOK AT THIS EXPERIENCE IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT. YOU HAD A PROFESSIONAL, FRIENDLY PLUMBER WHO IS DRUG TESTED, CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKED, DRESSED IN A CLEAN UNIFORM, WEARING SHOE COVERS SHOW UP ON TIME TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM. I AM SORRY THAT YOU DID NOT SEE THE VALUE IN THE SERVICE WE PROVIDED AT A FAIR PRICE.

I set an appointment and they came out in less than a week and fixed the leak. They have a price list that has a set price for every job performed and that is the way you pay. The price was reasonable and we haven't had any problems since they fixed the toilet.

The service man sent was on time, courteous and knowledgeable. He was helpful and took the time to answer my questions. He was able to clean out a drain which we were very concerned about and cleaned the area surrounding the drain. He also did a good job of replacing some worn pipe. He left the work areas clean.
