These movers were excellent. The movers were on time (even a few minutes early). They were very polite. When the movers were packing my apartment up, they asked about anything they weren't sure of and labeled EVERYTHING including what was in the box and what room it came from. They noted and showed me anything that had nicks or anything before they moved it. They were very organized. Two of the men packed while two of the men loaded the truck so the whole apartment was loaded in 3 hours. Then, it was easy to tell them where to put the boxes when we got to the new place because I knew what was in each one. WHen they were all done, the whole move came out $300 less than the estimate. What a great deal. I will be using them again next time I move.
Description of Work: They packed most of my two bed apartment, and moved me to another two bedroom apartment.

The experience in total was an unmitigated disaster. The crew was good--nice guys who tried to do the job well. The sales rep. did a thorough walk-through of my house and gave an estimate that he represented as his assessment of time/effort involved. The packing day was dreadful. Very little was packed and what was packed required total repacking--one box with two coat hangers, e.g. Boxes of jumbled items dumped in that were from different parts of the house. So I spent over one day repacking their boxes and packing everything else myself. When I complained, was told that a discount would be worked out at the end of the whole job. On moving day--estimated as loading and unloading in 1 day, the management said they wouldn't be able to finish unloading on the same day--even tho the loading was done in 3-1/2 hrs. Said the payment would basically double the estimate. Refused to give any discount for packing disaster, and then said they wouldn't deliver the next day unless I paid for what they thought" the next day's cost would be. I said I surely wasn't going to pay up front for work yet to be performed--response: then we'll keep all of your possessions! Since I was "over a barrel" I was forced to pay approx. $2,000 over the original estimate or lose all of my household possessions. Extremely rude, unprofessional screaming; said I lied about packing: "I know my men and they would never pack a box with only 2 coat hangers. You pay--UPFRONT--of we'll keep your belongings and charge you for "storage." Some screaming maniacs seem to run the place!! Unbelievably high charges which they said were due to my "clutter and disorganization." I asked if it was always the customer's fault and the manager hung up on me. Don't hire them!!! Stayed in a hotel that night--had no access to critical meds, clothing, important papers, etc. Horrible experience.
Description of Work: Beltway Movers were to move a 3 BR household of furniture/boxes, etc. from a home in DC to an apartment building about 1 mile away. One day of packing was to be performed prior to the move.

Response from Beltway Movers and Storage
Moving is one of the top 5 stressors in a person’s life. It can be compounded when the task at hand becomes overwhelming. We are sorry that our customer’s experience initially was a predicament that seemed to have no end in sight. Utilizing a transitional assistant or move manager might have helped to organize this move in such a way to enable the customer to prepare for the move and for us to conduct the task of moving. A move consultant did an in-home estimate and was advised by the customer that it was a partial move only. The customer was planning on handling the rest. The original move was scheduled for one day of limited packing and for one day partial move of the residence. Our company spent 4 days assisting with packing, organizing, moving and storing so that the home was completely cleared out for an imminent settlement date . We were able to lend the services of 2 onsite visits of a manager and move consultant as well as coordinate with the realtor to help bring the move to completion. The customer has called since the date of her posting to thank us for our perseverance and flexibility. Beltway takes its reputation, service ,and customer’s seriously. Over 60% of our work is by repeat business and referral for the last 50 years. This move has been reviewed from start to finish by the board to determine how we can improve our communication, procedures and service. We are sorry that this move caused our customer so much sorrow.

They were prompt, keep us infomred of follow-up steps as well as the various decision points as to how things could be shipped. They were professional & courtesy. Not all the items have been received as of this date (4/2/2010) so we can not speak to the effectiveness of their packing and shipping.

The moving truck arrived right on time with a crew of two, as promised. The movers were courteous and respectful and began moving some of the items near the door right away which helped to clean out the living room to make more room for the rest of the move--although I was surprised that they did not move the filing cabinets early on as they were heavy items and right next to the door. I continued to work on removing some smaller loose items that could fit into my car, while staying out of their way. Things started to slow down considerably when they started to hand pack the remaining things (of course, this is a slower operation). I left after about 2-1/2 hours into the process to bring back food for the workers and to hit the ATM for tip money. When I returned they had made additional progress but there was still a lot to do. Unknown to me at this point they had started to make some bizarre packing decisions. 1. I had bought two 10-lb rolls of packing paper for all the hand packing of kitchen items and sundries, but they ended up just putting them into one of my plastic bin storage units and put it into the truck. So when they ran out of packing paper they just started tossing items loosely into the big moving boxes. 2. They found some colored tissue paper that I had bought for wrapping Christmas presents and actually used THAT to wrap some of my items. Weird. 3. They used an entire large box to protect a beat-up old lampshade, but must have piled stuff on top of my Tiffany lampshade to the $350 floor lamp. It was bent and distorted when it arrived. This smacks of considerable inexperience and lack of training. 4. They started removing individual drawers from the filing cabinets to move them. Now, I have moved these filing cabinets myself several times and never needed to do this; a filing cabinet dolly works fine especially with a crew of two on stairs. I've seen other movers carry these things (loaded full) on their backs up two flights of stairs with a competitive moving company. But I figured, well, Beltway Movers have their own technique even though removing the drawers seemed inefficient. What I didn't expect was at the other end of the move that all the drawers would be randomized and I ended up having to carry files from 2nd floor to basement and vice versa to sort it all out. AND one of the cabinets had been damaged due to a misaligned drawer being forced into the roller slot. 5. The last moving company I used had told me they couldn't move chemicals or flammables. So assuming this was true for Beltway, I had started a box of cleaning things that I wanted to NOT MOVE to clean the apartment afterward. Figuring that Beltway Movers wouldn't want to move them anyway as they were restricted items. But when I returned with the sandwiches for lunch, I discovered that the chemicals had already been packed into the truck. Guess I should have labeled them to stay, but was still surprised that they were okay to take. 6. They never unfolded one of the garment boxes that I had purchased in advance, but instead used a Beltway Movers garment box and presumably charged me for it. There were also two other large moving boxes of mine that they did not use but charged me for large Beltway Movers boxes instead and just moved my boxes as-folded-up. Did they need explicit instructions from me to use these? They could have asked... I found that old set of lifting weights was broken in the middle of the living room. Admittedly it had plastic parts that were old, and may have cracked when they tried to handle it in a way not intended by design. But neither of them apologized or even acknowledged the damage. After about four hours (including a lunch break) progress seemed to be slowing to a crawl. I've had a fair number of moving companies move me around the country over the past 35 years, and this was probably the slowest crew that I've seen. I discovered that they had missed an entire closet and so just started packing it up myself to keep things moving. Guess it was I good thing I used my own boxes for this or there would have been more boxes wasted. The truck finally rolled out after 5 hours. And only because I told them to just leave the rest of the wall hangings and some things in the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. I came back for them later. On the other end of the move things went a little better. I was happy to see that they had a runner going into the living room to protect the new hardwood floors that had been installed in the house. The major furniture ended up where I asked them to put it. Most (but not all) of the labelled boxes ended up in their designated rooms. I didn't see any significant damage to the house as a result of the move-in. The expensive queen-size mattress and box spring didn't get appreciably soiled, so kudos for a clean move. I had to leave early to sign the closing documents on the house, and so gave them each $40 tip to finish the job and lock up. Which they did, although they did not leave me the receipt. It's been one week since the move and I still don't know how much it cost me. All in all, it was a mixed experience. I went with Beltway Movers because of the high rating on Angie's list but to be honest I've had better moves from competitive companies.
Description of Work: This was a standard move from an apartment residence to a house about 15 miles away. About 40 Xerox-sized boxes were packed in advance by me, but the movers had to pack and move the rest including kitchen supplies, bathroom, linens and clothing. The move involved a bed, dresser and nightstand, some bookcases, a futon, two floor lamps, a dining room table, four 4-high filing cabinets, 2 bikes and a computer table. There were no major appliances. I had pre-purchased 3 garment boxes and 6 large boxes that were empty when the movers arrived. The task was to pack all belongings in the moving truck and then safely move them into the house into the rooms designated by the labels on the boxes.

We are sincerely sorry that we caused this customer stress on what should have been a joyous occasion of moving into a new home. Through the arbitration of our general manager and office manager we have been able to resolve the issues and damages surrounding the move and have won the confidence of the customer. While there are many issues associated with this move we believe that miscommunication was the key. On our on line move tips, planning for a successful day, we encourage customers to stay with our crews throughout the move process. This enables our crewleader to clarify the customer’s directions and address concerns.. Our communication skills were not at their best on the day of this move. The customer initially told the move consultant there would maybe be a little packing. As standard protocol our dispatcher called the day before the move to verify services that would be provided. We failed to discern that the customer’s plans had changed quite a bit and we would be required to do the majority of the packing. This meant we did not send the right amount of packing materials or crew. Another standard protocol for our crews are to quickly move the large pieces of furniture out of the home within the first half hour. This encourages the customer that things are getting done and that move day may actually be a win. Our crew chief assures us that they were committed to providing an honest hours work but he failed to communicate this to the customer while working on the slower details of packing. We appreciate that this customer took the time to voice his concerns when we sent an online customer satisfaction survey. His preference might have been to just let things be and move on. When we receive feedback it enables us to resolve issues with our customer and improve our services

Got excellent information from their website to help us prepare and do our own packing. Got a free in person estimate. Three movers arrived five minutes early on moving day. They moved our things carefully and professionally and helped us finish packing a few things. There was slushy snow outside and they covered the carpets in both homes. The move was complete in an hour less than the estimated time, meaning we saved even more money. I would recommend and use them again.

This is probably the 3rd time that I have used them. I have always been very happy with them. They show up on time. They are very courteous, respectful and professional. They are very attentive to furniture and stuff. They don?t bang stuff around. They are careful. They don?t quit until the job is done and done the way I want it. It ended up taking them a little longer than I expected. They were absolutely on time. They came in and surveyed what had to be done. They came in and did the job. They definitely worked very well as a team. They were very coordinated. It was not like 3 guys stood around wondering what to do. They knew exactly what they had to do. They had a plan. They really took the time to make sure that the delicate stuff and breakables were protected. They were top grade movers. Nothing valuable broke. Pretty much everything survived. The price was very close to the estimate. They were here for about 10 hours and in most places it would have cost me the same price. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

Company contacted us quickly with accurate estimate. Came to house to inventory and update cost estimate, working with our schedule of availability. Arrive on time moving day. Brought all necessary moving equipment and tools. No surprises. Brought enough people to do the job right. Clean, friendly workers. Worked hard and with minimal number of rest breaks--important, since we were paying by the hour. This was a relatively easy move, since we packed 90% of breakables, and the distance between homes is short, however, we were very pleased with the service. All larger furniture pieces were carefully wrapped and arrived without any damage. Company provided special crate for 52" LCD TV, and took special care in handling.

Arrived on time. Very efficient packing and good labeling. Same crew packs and moves, so the first day, they got a jump on the move by packing up the whole truck they brought and storing it overnight. Then they came with 2 trucks the next day. The crew knew exactly what do do since it was the same guys, and they finished early on the second day. The actual cost was almost exactly the estimate. Very careful, only trivial damage. Hire them!

The Beltway Movers team was just great. We had to reschedule twice at the last minute because our buyer had problems, but Beltway was unbelievably patient and flexible, and charged only slightly more than the original estimate. On moving day, the team arrived promptly at 8:00am, introduced themselves, and started hauling things with a clear plan in mind. They were courteous and efficient throughout. Our destination location has a huge set of stairs to get to the front door, so they joked about complaining, but powered through even though it was obviously a tough job. We had been concerned that some of our china boxes marked "Fragile" ended up at the bottom of stacks in the truck, but nothing was harmed when we unpacked. Overall, they made our moving day much better than we expected, and provided great service for the value.

Beltway was very responsive to my request for an estaimte to move, although, like other reviewers, I question how accurate they can be when they do not some out and look. Our estimate was 1700 or so and it ended up being 2400. I do not think this is due to any fault of Beltway, I just think it is impossible to trul know how much of a move we are talking about without actually seeing the stuff to be moved. We tried very hard to give them an accurate estimate of the "stuff", but I think we were too conservative. When Beltway called on Friday to confirm the person calling seemed to not understand we may need some packing done. The woman who I spoke to defintely encouraged em to pack as much as possible, and gave me great advice on how to best spend our time getting ready so as to minimize packing, but I certainly did say packing would need to be done, and they were perfectly clear that they would do whatever if would take, but that packing = time = money. The person who called to re-confirm suggested a four man crew instead of a two man crew, and that ended up being a very good idea. The crew themselves were great guys, totally preofessional, very hard working. Things went fairly smoothly. We are still unpacking, but in general most boxes ended up in the right rooms. They did destroy one nightstand, but it was a make it yourself item from Target, so we just let it go. Just today we noticed that there is some fairly substantial damage to the wooden arm of a recliner, but again we'll just let it go. I would use Beltway again. Things happen in moves, and these guys were so professional and reasonably priced that we would absolutely use them again.

Entire move went smoothly. The three movers worked efficiently and quickly. They hit one problem in trying to get the queen box spring up the second flight of stairs and there was some scrapping of the railing. Entire move took just over 3 hours, but the company charges for travel time, so I had to pay an extra 2 hours. I find it hard to believe that at 7 in the morning it takes 1 hour to get from Rockville to Dupont, though. Similarly, they charged 1 hour for travel time back to Rockville.

This company provided an extremely positive experience for us for both services both moving in and out. The workers were very nice and accommodating. There was no damage from storage. Since our renovation was not completed when we moved back into the house, we did not unpack everything right away. Our contract with them said that if anything was missing or damaged that you had to report it withing a short amount of time. We were missing some shelves and inquired with the company about three months after their service and they were very helpful and would have followed through had we not found our shelves in another spot. I would warmly recommend this company even though their prices are not the lowest their amount and quality of service speaks for itself. At one point during the move back in the construction was not complete, the house was still in a state of disarray and a workers vehicle was blocking the drive. I was beside myself and the movers calmed me down and reduced my stress levels drastically by letting me know that they could work around it without any problems. This just shows that the company hires quality workers.

Van showed up within 20 minutes of promised time, delayed by traffic. We had a team of 5 moving us out of our home. They took extreme care with our stuff as well as ensuring that they didn't damage any walls, floors or doors as they moved our stuff out. The move out cost as much as the entire estimate, largely due to the fact that they don't send anyone out to perform an estimate. They were very clear about the fact that they charge by the 15 minute increment. During our move-out, the guys stopped for lunch - and took about 25 minutes. The foreman only credited one 15-minute increment for the lunch, which I had no choice but to accept. I also felt that the guys were standing around a lot, waiting for something to do. Upon move-in day, the van showed up exactly on time. We had a team of 3 for move-in, two of whom had been on the move-out team - so they had a great idea of what stuff there was and where, in general, it would go. The move-in team seemed much more efficient - I didn't see any times where anyone was standing around waiting for something to do. When it was time to settle up, I felt that there was a bit too much pressure to sign the paperwork indicating that there was no damage. There was a lot of stuff going on that day, and I didn't personally inspect every piece of furniture that came off of the truck. When I realized that this was my only opportunity to raise any issues, I ran around looking at everything that I could. I then reluctantly signed the papers, relying on their excellent ratings from Angie's List. As it turned out, everything was there and nothing was damaged. I'm pleased with the quality of their work. No damage to either house during move-out or move-in. They were thorough and did a great job packing everything in the van.
Description of Work: Moved our stuff out of our townhouse on Capitol Hill, stored it for 14 days, and then moved it in to our new home in Germantown. They packed our stuff in a van, stored that van for the duration, then brought that van out on move-in day. This significantly reduced our costs and the amount of wear-and-tear on our stuff.

They did a great job! We have a ton of books, and I really appreciated that each of the movers seemed to have extensive training on how to move boxes (lift from the legs, etc.), so I didn't have to worry about the books breaking anyone's back. When we got to the townhouse, the movers (three guys) were good at working things up the narrow stairwell, and also good at saying when something just wasn't going to work and it was better for the furniture not to try anymore. Beltway is a bit expensive, but I thought it was well worth it.

Two of the movers were very accommodating, but the one in charge just didn't seem to be doing everything in the way it should have been done. It was difficult to talk to them. They also tried to move as little as possible. I felt they didn't pack the kicthen items very well. I believe the people I dealt with were out of the Forestville area.
Description of Work: I hired Beltway to move everything in my old house into my new house.

WE ARE DISAPPOINTED TO HEAR THAT WE DID NOT SERVE THIS CUSTOMER WELL. THIS MOVE TOOK PLACE ABOUT 5 MONTHS AGO. AT THAT TIME THE CUSTOMER WAS GIVEN A EVALUATION CARD WHERE HE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO RATE AND COMMENT ON OUR SERVICES. NO CONCERNS WERE VOICED AT THAT TIME. NOW THAT WE HAVE HEARD ABOUT HIS CONCERNS THROUGH ANGIE’S LIST, OUR GENERAL MANAGER HAS TRIED TO CONTACT HIM SEVERAL TIMES. WE ARE OPEN TO DISCUSSING HIS CONCERNS SO THAT WE MIGHT CONTINUE TO ADDRESS PERSONNEL CONCERNS AND IMPROVE OUR SERVICES.

Arrived almost on time. In addition to scratching up the wainscoting in the house we were leaving and losing a piece to our son's highchair, they broke a $1800 treadmill-it doesn't work at all-not nicked, dented, etc.-but totally does not work. I don't know if it was from the way they took it apart & put it back together or from the fact that they dropped it at least once. They have agreed to compensate us $100 for it!!!!
Description of Work: Moved half of a 2 bedroom home.

I had a couple of estimates. This company was able to do the entire job in nine hours. They did break a chair, but they immediately deducted money from the bill. They did a great job and we will use them again.
Description of Work: We had them move my mother's things to another condo, seven miles away. They took down and set up her furniture. They partially packed her things.

The first crew that moved us from the townhouse into storage was not as quick as the second crew, but they had a very full townhouse loaded up within 3 hours, and we were on our way to the new house. Everything was unloaded and put in place within 5 hours - and it was a 6 level house! They were excellent at making sure that everything was placed where we wanted it and being careful of the new carpet and hardwood floors.
Description of Work: Beltway movers moved us from one townhouse into storage, then from storage into a new house, picking up our other townhouse along the way. It was a complicated move, and Beltway movers made it easy for us. There was a piano involved as well, to make it more interesting.

They showed up on time - a few minutes early in fact but their estimate was incorrect. They charged me 3 times more than what I was quoted. They didn't have floor runners (used pads) as I had inquired about when I made the appointment, they didn't wrap my mattresses or pad the railings in the house - probably the single thing that increased my cost was they brought a much smaller truck which necessitated 2 trips to the house. On one leg of the move they got lost for about 30 minutes. When unloading the truck 2 of the men repeatedly walked off the truck with only one box in hand prolonging the move. In the past I've used another moving company and wish I had used them again. I paid much more than expected and the service was no where near what I expected. Needless to say I will not use them again - not worth the extravagant amount of money I was charged.
Description of Work: I contacted Beltway movers for a local move.

I spent about two hundred dollars for disposal of some things. They spent thirteen hours on this move because it was complicated. This is a large company and they have alot of resources and were flexible. They also have a storage facility.
Description of Work: They moved all of my belongings from storage and also from my previous residence and moved it to my new home.
