Unique Refinishing

I can't say enough good things about Felix and his crew of very talented workers. Felix immediately responded to my request for an estimate, came the next day for the estimate, and fit me into his schedule within a very short time after I had decided to use them. (actually, the next day because he had an opening)!He was very friendly, professional, curteous and honest, what more could I possibly ask for. His crew of 3 workers were incredible. They did an amazing job with the floors, the patch is seamless ( CANNOT) even tell where it was patched, the sanding is perfect and the finish is gorgeous. The two days they came to do the work, they were there even ahead of time, incredibly punctual. There was literally no dust from the entire job! They have a state of the art dustfree sanding machine, and I did not even have a light layer of dust on my countertops. They did lay plastic sheeting on the counters just in case. They work on your home like it is their own home, I was extremely impressed with the entire operation. There cost is very reasonable, I would not consider them expensive at all. Very fair! If you pay less, you will get a lesser quality job. I consider myself a very "picky" person, and I could not find one thing wrong with their work. I can assure you, you will not be disappionted, they are the best! I will, without question, use them for future refinishing jobs, and also recommend them to friends and family.

Initially Felix was very courteous and set up the estimate appointment easily. He called to make sure I would be at home and arrived on time. I explained that it was difficult to move all the furniture and I wanted only the first floor refinished. He walked around and made a few measurements. He explained that he preferred using water based polyurethane and that he could do the whole job in one day. He then wrote his price on the back of his business card and left. I felt that that was in no way a proper estimate proposal of services and was so glib as to indicate to me that he did not want my service. Accordingly, he will not get my service.

I engaged Unique Refinishing to complete the refinishing of all the hardwood floors in my Mom's row home .The floors had not had not been covered for some time and had significant wear The downstairs floors had been covered with tile and we had taken those up so these were floors that had again seen some considerable trauma. I had heard of Unique Refinishing through Angie'sList and they received numerous high ratings. I am here to add to that. I can't tell you how happy I am with the results They were very prompt and specific with what they could and could not do and the results were absolutely phenomenal. I could not be more pleased. I have heard some say that their prices are a bit high. I don't know if that is the case as I received prices both higher and lower than what I was given by Unique. I can only tell you that when attempting a job as important as your hardwood floors, you need to give it to someone who is a professional and knows what they're doing. Unique Refinishing certainly fills that bill. I would highly recommend them to anyone who's interested in a high quality job.

Felix and his crew are as advertised. Punctual, professional, and above all, incredibly reasonable. The estimate was far below the nearest competitor. The work was performed on the day promised and the clean up was thorough. I plan to use them again for several other rooms soon.

We couldn't be happier with the quality, service and price from Unique Refinishing. Felix and his crew were true professionals. They arrived on time and wasted no time getting started. Everyone knew what to do and how to do it. The floors were completely sanded and refinished with minimal dust or disruption. Trash and debris was removed daily. The work was performed on time and exactly as quoted. Very competitive with the pricing, especially with my Angie's List $100 coupon. I will definitely recommend them to others.

It could not have gone any better! Staff were highly skilled, experienced craftsmen. The owner is clearly an expert on floors, finishes, and installation, and explained our options exceptionally well. We had just painted the entire interior, and were concerned that the work required--particularly with refinishing--might mess things up. Unique used a sophisticated industrial strength dust scavenging system to capture nearly all the dust created when the floors were sanded. They arrived each day exactly when they said they would, and cleaned up each evening. They managed to match the refinished floor color quite closely to that of the prefinished areas. Their attention to detail was first class, both for flooring and molding. The results looked so good that as they were packing up to leave we asked them to come back and replace the bedroom carpets with solid hardwood next year. I am already recommending them to friends.

Fantastic! I had a very small window of opportunity to have this job completed after buying my home, and before moving in. Felix was great with communication before, during and after the job. He and his team were punctual, polite, and left the house amazingly clean. His dust free system is truly dust free. He answered all of my questions, gave me options in several areas, and never pushed me in any one direction. He called me each day (the job took four days) with a status update even if there were no questions. I would high recommend Felix and his staff.

Felix was great. We love our floor. He gave us the lowest quote. I called him and he was very prompt to come out and give a quote. We didn't have the work done for a few months, and he still honored his original quote. He was very helpful with the choices and so far, our floor is holding up great!

The work took precisely the amount of time they had estimated and cost precisely what they had proposed. They were clean and neat, so a minimum amount of dust and upheaval was generated. They were considerate of the working hours requirements in my building, and showed up punctually, both at the estimating walk-around and in doing the work. I wanted to match the wood floors in the adjacent hallway, which is a product that is no longer made, so they brought me several samples from which to select. The end result is very, very close, so I'm happy. The only minor issue is that the closet door is too tight to the floor and tends to stick in one part of its swing.

I called Unique Refinishing for an estimate to refinish 2 rooms. I told them I needed the job done within 10 days because I have renters coming in. They took a quick look at their schedule and said they were booked until mid-September. I called 2 other refinishing companies and Unique Refinishing is the only one that would not attempt to make room in their schedule for me. Obviously not very flexible.

They did an excellent job. They were great. It looks like a brand new floor. I didn't even know it could look like this. They had this machine, when they sanded they put plastic up and they were very careful. I have carpet on the stairs and they were real careful. They had plastic down on that. They cleaned up; they vacuumed even in my hallway. They vacuumed up all their stuff. I had no mess whatsoever. It was amazing. I wish all contractors could be like that. When they were done they cleaned up and they took everything away. I thought the price was reasonable. He was very honest with us and told us exactly what he would do. I have even told other people about them.

They were very good. They were prompt and professional. They did a great job with my floors.

To be honest, I hired these guys a year ago. it went well but I am pretty sketchy on details.

We were very pleased with Unique Refinishing's work. We had been warned by other people who had had their floors refinished to prepare ourselves for huge amounts of dust, but the method that Felix's team used truly contained all the dust. They did a great job with the floors. There was one small section of wood putty that didn't blend well after curing. Felix's team was responsive and came out right away to replace that board. We will hire them again in the future.

The owner explained the process and gave suggestions on refinishing in natural versus a stain color. We were advised ahead of time to look at the website for descriptions of oil and water based refinishing products. He gave me a good overview of how long it would take and how the furniture would be moved. Price was a little higher but they move all of your furniture and then place it back, which not all the other companies offere. We have to do other work in our kitchen first, so have not made a decision yet, but this company is still under consideration.

They were extremely professional and performed excellent work. The owner was there several time during the day and keep me abreast of where they were in the process and what would be done next. The process was entirely dust free. I would highly recommend them.

This was a great experience from beginning to end. Felix responded to my initial inquiry within 2 hrs and met with me for an estimate the following day. Although he wasn't the least expensive estimate I got, he was willing to do the demolition while some other contractors were not willing to do that part of the project. He also was the only one that offered a process which minimized the dust with sanding. He arrived with a crew of 4 (this was a fairly large project). They worked incredibly hard for 11 hrs (!) the first day and completed the demolition and prep of the floor for installing. I needed to have the floors completed that week for the next part of the project to take place. There was a snow storm predicted for Wed and Felix picked up the entire crew and got them to my house by 7 am. They worked extra hours to get the floors completed on time without cutting any corners. I have had hardwood floors installed/refinished before and have never had the quality experience that I had with this company. Felix pays a lot of attention to making the customer happy with the final product and we tried multiple different stains to pick the one that I wanted. His crew was courteous and hard-working and always cleaned up completely at the end of each work day. I wish all my experiences with contractors would be as good as this one was.

Bought a house and wanted the floors refinished before moving in. Felix' bid was the lowest of 3, and he was the only one to offer to let me see various colors on the floor before completing the job. His crew was on time, professional, and the finished product is beautiful. They mixed two colors for me and the result is better than I imagined. After they left, I noticed that some floor stain had been left on the bathroom floor tiles. Felix sent his crew out the next morning first thing to clean it up. I know they encountered some challenges with the job, as my floors are old and uneven. But they rolled with it, and the result is lovely. He even offered me a discount for paying cash that I wasn't expecting. Also left me with cleaning supplies so I don't ruin his handiwork.

I liked Felix from the start and am glad we used him! Not only was his the best price but felt most at ease with him. First, I must say, he is extremely honest and candid in a genuine way. I believe I emailed for a referral on a holiday and got a reply phone call within an hour. Most people don't want to give any particulars over the phone and want to come out and waste your time. Felix got straight to the point as I'd laid out detailed requirements in my email and discussed it over the phone. He gave me ball park estimates over the phone for different options which turned out to be very accurate! Although I did not haggle a price, the dead of winter is a good time for work as its a low time for most crews. Second, I must say that I'm rather particular--as in I think like an Artisan with expensive tastes. Felix is a businessman and understood my practical and frugal nature. He was candid in a diplomatic way and all his advice turned out to be 100% accurate and I eventually succumbed to reality. The only way he can make a profit is to specialize and do volume with solid quality. What this means is that although he can do almost anything, unless you really want it and are willing to induce him with money to make it worth his while, he'll stick to a fairly straight forward and proven plan. For example, I didn't want shoe molding outside the baseboard but he said there would be gaps even though he hadn't seen under the carpet yet. I started removing carpet myself and baseboards to realize he was right. Same goes for color. I wanted clear finish but he kept to what he said he'd do and showed us what the "oiled look" water-based finished looked like on a freshly sanded area. He was right again, we could see the grain and it wasn't too dark or too light and sterile looking. He told me up front his crew wouldn't fill most of the cracks with putty as it would just come out and look good without it. I was skeptical but I think he is correct. Anyway, it looks good and the floor was never designed to be finished--only to be used as a sub-floor under wall-to-wall carpet. This means there were some damaged, warped and not the best quality wood prior to his start. The floor has "character" and trying to change the nature of it would be futile and make it look worse in the long run. The repairs and finish turned out great. I'm not sure how they did it; maybe it was luck as they got out all the water stains! Don't expect a thick super glossy look like you see on pre-finished wood though if you use the same coatings as we did. Also, you have to be realistic on old hardwood where tack strips holes may have had dark rings but it just enhances the mixed color and grain variation that makes it have character! But, they did get most of the distracting dark colored holes out (and filled some staple holes to not draw unnecessary attention. Also, if you point out squeaks they'll try to get rid of them. He matched the old flooring to the new rather well and you wouldn't notice it if not previously aware. We were worried you would see a change in color or the lack of gaps in the wood like the old part had but, you can't tell unless shown exactly where the new area starts. His preference is not to use reclaimed wood for quality reasons. He ended up having to in a closet but since I'd carefully removed the section myself it was in good condition. He's not trying to charge you more, it just costs him more in time and all sorts of unanticipated risks/complications. But, it worked out well for us. Parting thoughts. He and his crew went the extra mile and repaired some areas and added molding and didn't charge me extra. Never did I get the impression he was going to nickel and dime me. Their gestures were nice as they didn't have to go out of their way. I was expecting to pay a little more than agreed because of the extra repairs but he handed the extra cash back to my wife and said we'd over paid. We were flabbergasted. He finished a day early (took 4 days) but we recommend you stay out of the house for another day, maybe two to let the floor cure and although the smell isn't toxic, its still has a smell that we and our dog didn't like. So, you have to move out while he does his work unless you want to pay double. They are probably more flexible if you are having pre-finished installed. He's right again about the stress this will have on your pets. Recommend walking through every morning when they start and again just before or after the end of the day as you can head off problems before they begin. Also, treat the crews nice. Make sure they know which bathroom to use and if they can use the fridge or water glasses or what outlets to use to charge their phones. Finally, the before and after pictures are accurate and when I get time I'll try to load our on the system.

Felix was very quick to respond to our calls. We scheduled for him to come over 11/17/12 but then called to reschedule for 11/15/12. He was very flexible and accommodated our change in schedule. He came over, looked at our floors, was very honest about his being uneasy about doing the job because he did not feel it would come out well. Appreciated his honesty he could have just taken our money, did the job, and leave us with floors that we were not pleased with. He made recommendations for other options that did not include using his company, we appreciated that very much, and if we have project in future we would use him and recommend him.

We are extremely pleased with the work done by Unique Refinishing. We were returning to our house after living abroad and we had a small window of opportunity to have the floors refinished while the house was completely empty before our household goods were delivered. Felix and his crew were able to get the work done with plenty of time for the floors to dry and cure before our furniture arrived. Felix was great about returning calls, gave regular updates while the work was being done, and truly made every effort to meet our schedule. When the job was finished the floors were absolutely beautiful. We had a number of estimates to have our floors done and Unique Refinishing was a little bit (not much) more expensive than the average, but between the customer service and the quality of work performed, it was worth it.

Perfect, wonderful, great, terrific... We chose the oil base finish over the water based finished because we thought it had a warmer appearance. The fumes were strong and we had to stay out of the house for a few days however, we are very pleased with Felix and his crew. The sanding system was dustless and that makes a world of difference. The floors look brand new and we enjoyed getting to know Felix. We have undertaken a large remodel with multiple subs. Felix and his crew came in, did the work right and left everything ship shape. We recommend them very highly.

Unique Refinishing were nice and prompt. I thought he was professional. His price was okay. I probably will not use him because of the price.
