We could not be happier with Raker or the service we received. I left a message in the evening and had a return call the next morning. As we thought the refrigerator was broke due to the warmth, we were already placed on their schedule prior to the call. They needed to return with the correct part which was the next day! Also, at the first visit, a quick fix was initiated that allowed the water to work and as stated the coolness returned even better. We cannot recommend them more highly.
Description of Work: Our Refrigerator has a water dispenser that stopped working. We also had concern that the refrigerator was warm. After a thorough check, a quick adjustment to the door and ordering a part for the water, everything was diagnosed and solved.

We had an old maytag washer that was leaking water. We left a message with Raker. Reid called me back the same day. He also advised that it may be better to get a new washer because of the age of the machine, but would let us know when he came out. We scheduled an appointment for the next day. He was prompt and quickly diagnosed the problem as a leaking tub seal. He said that he normally would advise to get a new washer because of the repair cost, but we had a pretty good machine that could last another 5 to 10 years. He said that washers these days do not last as long. Personally, we agree that the machines these days are not build as they once were. We thought it over while he went on another call. We called him back to see when he could fix our tub. He had the part on hand and was able to fix our washing machine the same day. It took Reid about an hour to replace the tub seal. Our washing machine has been leak free ever since. We do not know what others would have charged for a tub seal replacement, so we cannot comment on the price. However, we appreciated his honesty and professionalism. He respects his customers.

Reid arrived on time for both service calls. His price was an A+ when I compared it to the estimate I received from another company. When I called him back for my dryer, he gave me an honest assessment to help me decide weather to buy a new dryer or go ahead with the repair. He gave me time to research new dryer pricing; however, I went with the repair.
Description of Work: I have used Raker's Appliance repair twice in the past 2 months. The first visit was for my refrigerator repair and since his service was so exceptional, Reid was the technician I called when my dryer required service.

My dryer had locked up a while ago, and I thought that the problem was a broken belt. When the weather got too warm to air dry clothing, I called Raker for help. Scheduling was simple, and they arrived on time [they called 10 minutes prior to let me know they were on their way]. It turned out that the drive belts were fine: instead, a sock had gotten into the fan blades! [Note to self: never run dryer without lint filter...] They extracted the sock, we vacuumed out the interior of the machine, and everything is working just fine now. I appreciated the quick work, but also the good humor and pleasant way the team members treated each other.
Description of Work: They arrived, tested non-functioning Samsung electric dryer, then determined from sound that the belts were not the problem. After dismantling the dryer, the offending sock was found and removed. I also learned a bit about patent infringement in the world of large appliances.

He called right back and explained my likely repair scenario. While it drives me crazy to throw stuff out, financially it made no sense to fix the microwave. Harry was straight up in his appraisal. He cold have fixed the microwave for $350, but was honest and told me to go to Lowes/Home Depot and buy a new one for $200. What more can I say?
Description of Work: Our microwave died. Harry diagnosed it over the phone and told me he could fix it but it would be cheaper to buy a new microwave. Great advice. That is what we did.

Took me a couple of days to finally get in touch with someone but once we communicated they responded immediately to come out next day and Reed explained what was wrong with the 40 Year old Dryer and the options of replacing the parts or buyiong a new Dryer. I decided to replace the parts and the estimate and the time to repair was exactly right on.

We bought a new house. I do not think the dishwasher was working correctly from the start and the refrigerator stopped working. We went on Angies list and found Raker's appliance repair serivce call fro $59.00. They identified the problems with both appliances, ordered the parts and repaired within 2 days.

We were very fortunate to be able to repair their Kitchen Aid refrigerator. Our usual supplier told us that the computer board we needed was no longer available. Luckily, we found one remaining in stock in PA and shipped it in. Amazing, because the frig is not old. The Bosch dishwasher also needed a computer but we had no problem getting that one. Moving is tough enough without having appliance issues too. Harry Raker 410-592-7749

I have had this problem twice before and paid to have it fixed each time. Each time, I was told, I should heat the back of the freezer with my hair dryer. No one had ever removed the freezer bottom cover and then removed the ice that had collected there. Mr. Raker did and then attached a do-hickey that he says would make sure that ice could not collect in the future. I would definitely have Raker work on my appliances in the future.
Description of Work: Water was dripping inside the back of the refrigerator, accumulating on the bottom of the refrigerator and ultimately running out into the floor.

That little do-hickey she referred is a old trick learned from years of frig work. We installed a small heater to compensate for old insulation thus preventing her drain from freezing again. It's a slight "design modification" that extends the life of the frig. Harry Raker 410-592-7749

My washer died with a load of soaking wet launry on a Saturday morning. Though Raker's advertised hours showed they were closed on Saturdays, someone returned my call within an hour or so. They came to my house on Monday morning and fixed the problem in less than an hour. The serviceman was very polite and professional. Top notch service.

Reid called to say he was going to be 10 minutes late, which was fine. He told me that he would charge $80 for the initial visit when I made the appointment. The ice maker in the fridge was not working and he was able to identify the source of the problem being the water valve needing replacement. Then he asked me if I wanted him to fix it. I said yes, as that was the purpose of the visit, however, he never mentioned what the part cost or additional cost would be and I never asked. He was done within an hour after he arrived since he already had the part in hand, and then told me that the cost was $240 when it came time to pay. I was surprised and asked how the cost could be so high. He explained that the part was very expensive, about $100. The overall charge still sounds too steep for me. I have no clue what a reasonable cost to replace a valve is, but it was too late and I ended up paying it, but applied my $10 Angie's list coupon.

Dear Member, It seems that there is a misunderstanding about pricing. Reid, my son, did clearly advise you of the total cost before completing the repair and got an OK. We are certainly sorry that message was somehow misunderstood. The pricing is very reasonable for the $100.00 part and labor involved. Nevertheless, we would be happy to discuss and resolve this confusion but have not yet received a return call from our message left for you. Harry Raker

I had been concerned about a possible leak in my dishwasher. The dishwasher required no parts at all. He just had to clean it out around the place where it drains and then he found that it was something related to the drain line, not the actual appliance. He moved the drain lines and now it is working great. I was also having problems with my side by side refrigerator. The water dispenser did not work but the ice dispenser did. They said it was a fairly common problem with my appliance. He actually came back a second time with two different parts to try to fix it. Neither part fixed the issue so I decided not to try any harder on that. He took the parts back so I didn't pay for any of that but I was glad we tried it. I have a built in microwave over the stove so it is pretty expensive to change it out. I asked him to look at a crack in the door and he was able to bring another part the second time he came back and replace it. That was the major part expense but it was fine because he found exactly the right replacement even though the appliance is nine years old. It went extremely well. He gave me a number of tips about the line of appliances I have. We talked about ways I could be sensible in replacing or repairing different things. The service call is credited against the repair for the individual appliances. Most of what I spent was for the microwave door replacement so the price was great. I highly recommend them. Have more recently received excellent advice re what to look for in new appliances I am contemplating. No charge phone consultation.

I needed my fridge repaired - the in door water dispenser wasn't working. While the repairman was not able to repair it during the service call, he diagnosed the problem (water line frozen) and recommended the solution (turn off the freezer until the water line thawed). Worked like a charm and I avoided having to replace the entire freezer door. Very personable and helpful repairman, and I appreciated the fact that he offered advice on a simple solution rather than selling me a large, expensive repair part.

I left a message on Saturday. Reed called Monday morning. He gave me an idea of what the problem could be over the phone. He came to the house by noon. He checked the ovens which did not have a protective fuse as we hoped and said that the control board was dead (a part the company does not make anymore). He was prompt, professional. He explained things very clearly. I would definitely hire this company again and recommend it to others.
Description of Work: Our 13 yo double wall ovens, Whirlpool Gold, were totally dead after a power outage due to the last hurricane. We wanted to know whether they could be repaired and for how much. We hated the idea of throwing the ovens into a landfill without knowing. Raker offered a coupon for a $59 service call while other companies charged much more.

Ultimately, we had to purchase a new dishwasher because the one in the home was old and badly leaking from the motor itself. However, we were very much impressed by Raker Appliance and will call them for our own appliances as well as those in the 2 rental homes we own. Reid Raker was polite, knowledgeable, helpful, and prompt.
Description of Work: We joined Angie's list for a year and purchased the deal that paid for a service call from Raker Appliance for only $59. We almost immediately received a phone call from the company to set up a service date and time. Reid Raker arrived precisely at the proposed time, and asked me some diagnostic-style questions about the dishwasher before he actually looked at it. Having arrived at the likely source of the dishwasher's problem from the answers I gave, Reid then delved into the appliance itself, where he found a major leak in the motor. Reid was unable to fix the problem because of the age of the machine and the severity of the leak, so we had to replace the dishwasher with a new one from an appliance store. However, we only paid Raker Appliance that original $59 fee that was already paid in full; we paid them nothing else. Had we not purchased that $59 deal, we would have paid much more. We have 2 rental houses beside our own home, and appliances are often breaking. We will always use Raker Appliance from now on and will check out Angie's List first before we look anywhere else for any needs.

I had found $59 coupon for Raker Appliance and set up an appliance repair service call through Angie's List on Monday, September 24, 2012 @ 3:05 PM. By 4:30, that day, Reid had phoned me to set up time when he could take a look at my refrigerator. I made my appointment for Friday, October 05, 2012 @ 9 -10 AM. On October 05, 2012, Reid called to say he was on his way and arrived on time. He was professional, but affable. When he looked inside the freezer section of my refrigerator he could see that it was covered in frost and determined that it was due to a faulty heater. Reid told me that if he had known that there was frost inside he could have brought a new heater with him. So he called about the new part and found out that it was in stock. He told me that it would cost about $223, including labor. I had approved the cost and he drove away to retrieve the new part. He returned within an hour and installed it. It was a messy process thawing out all of the frost within the freezer. It required about an hour of applying warm water with a baster to the frozen section and sopping up the water with a multitude of towels. Once it was completely thawed, Reid installed the new heater and thermostat. He told me to wait about 24 hours before I started to fill the refrigerator. But, I could add a few frozen non food items into the freezer section so that it did not have to work so hard. Thanks to Reid my refrigerator and freezer are both running perfectly and I did not have to buy a new refrigerator!
Description of Work: My refrigerator had stopped cooling and my freezer stopped freezing. I had lost most of the food in the refrigerator, but managed to save my frozen food in an old freezer I had in my basement.
