Description of Work: They serviced our gas fireplace log for a home we were selling, cleaned it and assured it was functioning well with no leaks etc. I was impressed with their responsiveness, communication, punctuality, efficiency and information shared during the service, and their price seemed fair. I will be calling them again soon for a home we have just bought.

Description of Work: I called and left a couple vmoicemails, which they eventually returned and sent someone out to my house to take a look at what I wanted, which, was a electric or ventless gas fireplace under the staircase (in the staircase wall) in my basement. The guy who came out (not steve) said gas or electric were both doable. I said great, let's get it going asap. He said it might cost around 2500. I said great, get me on the schedule. A few days later, no word, so I sent an email. Email never returened. |Must be nice to be a fireplace insert installer and have so much business that you can turn it away. Guess I could have saved a couple hundred grand and not gone to college, and just cut drywall, run gas lines, and drill screws all day long.

Description of Work: My gas fireplace was not turning on. When the technician arrived he knew how to fix the problem and noticed how dirty the fireplace and glass was. In 17 year I never had it cleaned. He made the fireplace work well, made it look better than ever, and educated me regarding the controls. He clearly is someone who loves his work. I will absolutely use this company for routine maintenance in the future.

Description of Work: Kyle, their head technician, came out at 6 pm on a Friday night to perform a check and cleaning of our 2 gas fireplaces, which hadn't been done in years. I wasn't sure what to expect, because my experience with other fireplace techs had been that they do as little as possible, write an excessive bill, and get out of Dodge. NOT KYLE. He was FANTASTIC - I asked him a million questions about both units, which are different in several ways, and he taught me all kinds of things about how to use them when the power goes out, lighting pilot lights correctly, placement of logs, etc. He really is an expert, and he really enjoys what he is doing, which is the highest compliment I can pay to a service provider. He cleaned both fireplaces, gave me the option of having the inside of the fire boxes re-painted to their original black (which I did and I am SO GLAD), he added mineral wool (which I found out is what makes a gas fireplace look like it has glowing embers in it), and he cleaned the glass behind the screen, as well as dusting the screens themselves. He vacuumed up everything so it was cleaner than it ever has been, and he repeated the steps I need to follow to light the pilot light so I could copy them down on a card. He asked me before he did anything to be sure it was okay (like painting the fire boxes, which produces a bit of a spray paint odor, but it's no big deal and completely worth it). This was all included in the price of the cleaning, which was 5% off for Angie's Listers and took about 2 hrs. I cannot recommend Kyle highly enough - he's a hard-working, patient, knowledgable technician, and I will pass his card out to everyone I know who has a fireplace! Customer for life!!

Description of Work: Service call for gas fireplace; pilot light would not stay on. I was able to get an evening appointment easily and quickly. The technician, Kyle, was very friendly and knowledgeable. He quickly identified the issue and gave me a quote for the repair. We discussed the age and maintenace of the fireplace and he recommended routine cleaning and maintenance (which I had not done for 8-9 years). There was no pressure and it was clear that he knew his stuff. He completely cleaned out and replaced the old embers, rearranged the logs and painted the interior of the firebox. The improvement was dramatic. Very statisfied with the work and highly recommend this company.

Description of Work: Mr. Steve Swerdlin is "Steve the Fireplace Guy." We wanted a gas fireplace insert installed in our conventional wood fireplace. We first went to Offenbacher's in Springfield; they don't do work in DC but Sean Hartnett at Offenbacher's recommended Steve. Sean also recommended Walter Kerr at Johnson Chimney; we got proposals from Steve and Walter and I was much happier with Steve's initial visit. | |Steve visited our house and carefully explained the work that needed to be done, and he walked us through the different gas insert options. The complicated part of the process (in my opinion) is determining how the new gas line is going to be strung. Some homeowners can install a new gas line that snakes around the outside of the house; we needed a new line installed within the house (the gas line comes into the house in the basement utility room, and the target fireplace is on the main floor). | |Steve inspected our utility room and carefully explained exactly where the new line would be positioned; this entails cutting holes in the basement ceiling so the installer can manipulate the flexible pipe. So if you are considering this work you need to keep this in mind, you will have to get the drywall repaired and re-painted after the work is done. | |We went shopping for the particular model of gas insert, and found that Acme Stove in Rockville has the best selection on display. Mike Taylor, the owner, knows Steve because Steve had worked for Mike before going independent. So Steve is known all around and recommended. | |We found the gas insert we liked at Acme, and Mike Taylor wrote up a quote sheet. Steve offered to procure the gas insert (based on the Acme quote) and we agreed. We asked Acme for a quote on installation for price comparison, and both Acme and Steve use the same formula for installation, based on the number of feet of new gas line that needs to be installed, so the prices were practically identical. | |Steve answered all our questions and did an excellent job. He does a good job of answering questions via email but don't expect immediate answers. I definitely recommend him. His installation crew was friendly and professional, and Steve personally was on-site for all of the work. |
