Benjamin Franklin Plumbing is a reliable and professional Gaithersburg plumbing company that delivers prompt and professional results on each and every project. We are pleased to provide comprehensive evaluation and review of your current system in order to provide the best and most efficient recommendations for repair, replacement, or new installation.
Family owned & operated.
The plumbing team arrived on time, I showed them the work, they gave me an estimate, and got started. It was great, I was able to workout afterwards because they completed the job in approximately two to two and a half hours. I was expecting a long afternoon of in and out of my house and clean-up afterwards. Very friendly individuals and they left me their direct contact information if there were any problems.
Description of Work: I requested to have two toilets repaired because they were constantly running. The plumbing company repaired both toilets as well as adjusted the handle on a third toilet. On two of the toilets, the inside had to be replaced, luckily not the full toilet. The work was completed in a short period of time and the repair team was very neat. In the past, I have had to go through and clean-up after the service work, not this time. I would hire Benjamin Frankling Plumbing again. Diane

The company was very accommodating after I missed the initial window for our appointment. It took a couple weeks to reschedule, and another missed appointment on their side, but once they came out, the inspection was very helpful in identifying areas that needed attention on our plumbing. They provided estimates for fixing each of the issues that they found, including replacing the 20 year old water heater, which we had planned on replacing soon anyway. I plan to have them come back and address some of the smaller issues, while I plan to get a second quote from another plumber on the larger work, because the prices seem a bit steep.
Description of Work: I bought the big deal for 2 Toilet Tune-Ups, Water Heater Flush & Whole house plumbing inspection. The plumbing inspection and toilet tune ups were performed, but the water heater flush could not be performed for risk of breaking the 20 year old heater.

We have found them to be honest, punctual and thorough. They also offer an annual maintenance plan for $135 which then gives you discounts on future visits and an annual checkup for free. It's worth it and it came in handy in the past. Would definitely recommend them.

At 11pm on a bitter cold Friday night we discovered a pinhole leak in the copper pipe leading to our hot water heater. The leak was above the water heater cutoff valve, so we had to shut off the water to the entire house and drain the pipes so that they would not freeze over night. The leak had also drenched our main electric panel, so we had to shut off all of the electricity to the house. So on said bitter cold night we had no water and no electricity/heat. We immediately searched for a 24 hour plumbing company that serves our area, and happened upon Benjamin Franklin. We called their 24 hour line only to find out that their 24-hour operation was merely an answering service. The answering service assured us that someone would be out to our home at 7am to repair our leak. Honestly, it was after midnight and we were just exhausted, so we agreed rather than trying to find another company before our cell phones died. At 7am the next day no one arrived. At 7:30 we called again and spoke to their regular staff. The regular staff told us that no, someone was not scheduled to come to our home at 7am. Rather, their plumbers actgually start going on calls at 7am and someone would get around to us at some point that day. I nearly lost my composure. Our house temperature had dropped to 52 degrees inside, and the electrician would not come out to deal with our soaked electrical panel until the leak had been repaired. We explained our rather unpleasant situation to the regular staff, and they agreed to re-arrange priorities to get someone to our home quickly. 45 minutes after the call a plumber was at our front door and ready to get started. The plumber was professional, friendly, efficient, and effective. He fixed our leak with ease and got us back on the path to a fully functional house. We were grateful for the repair, but wish someone would have been more upfront with us about the timeline for it.

We were very pleased with the professional appraisal given us. The estimator checked all areas for safety issues, feasibility of even putting in a gas line, etc. My husband is in the construction business and he was very pleased that Jason R. was well aware of the many complexities involved. We did not go through with the work for personal reasons, as we were hoping to do a full kitchen renovation and also enjoy having a gas lit fireplace, but the extent of a full renovation became prohibitive at this time. We will definitely consider having Ben Franklin plumbing do the work when we get the funds. We felt the estimate was reasonable and fair.
Description of Work: We wanted an estimate of putting in a gas stove line and also the cost to convert our fireplace to a gas fireplace. The gas stove was to be part of a major kitchen renovation. Converting our fireplace to a gas one, was to be an extra bonus for personal enjoyment.

We bought a coupon for plumbing service from these clowns. They called after the scheduled appointment and cancelled, because they had other jobs that would make them more money. I guess the fact that we had to take a precious day off from work to take care of this was of no consequence to them. We were hoping to find a good plumber for now and the future, what we found was disappointment. I would avoid using this plumber if at all possible, there are many other good ones in the area,

We were forced to cancel our appointment because the plumber assigned to this (and other) appointments called in sick with the flu. All our other plumbers were totally booked, and it became impossible for us to serve this client when we originally promised. Our dispatcher offered an alternate appointment on another day, which the client verbally accepted, but did not allow us to book. I have left voice and email messages for this client, and have offered to provide compensation for their inconvenience, but have not heard back from them so far. We sincerely regret causing this client frustration and inconvenience, and we would love to have the opportunity to serve them and compensate them for their trouble.

The receptionist told me that they do not have a price list and their policy is to not quote over the phone. I would rather know before they come what I could expect to pay rather than them come and give me a take it or leave it price on the spot. A simple "our standard fee is ___ but some factors can complicate the job and increase the final price" would have sufficed for me. I will not do business with them. If I was asking them to rip out the water heater then sure they may want to look at the configuration before giving a quote but a standard service like replacing a tprv should be quotable over the phone (in my opinion).
Description of Work: I wanted to purchase a water heater flush/toilet tune up special that Angie's List promoted. But I also need the temperature and pressure release valve (tprv) replaced on the water heater so before buying the promotion I called to ask the price to replace the tprv in addition to what is covered in the flush/tune up special.

Mr. T, we totally understand your frustration of not knowing a price up front. Similar to a car mechanic, we can't see all the possibilities of unforeseen circumstances that may become part of replacing a part over the telephone. Hence, this is why we would need to come to your home and give you a written estimate, address all your concerns, and provide you with different options. It is unfortunate that plumbing issues, in your home, can't be brought in to a repair shop as you can with a car. I would like to address your concern as to our policy of not quoting pricing over the phone; as human nature dictates, if a customer was told the job would be between $50 and $100, most people would remember $50. When the technician arrives and determines the problem and takes into consideration; condition of the plumbing, access to the area, venting (new MD laws), etc., and the bill could be $100. At this point most clients then become annoyed that we misquoted them on the phone. Actually seeing the job is very important to the plumber to give the homeowner an exact, upfront price of the repairs needed. Please note; once we quote a price we do not add on additional costs UNLESS the homeowner wants additional work done. As we give a 2 year parts and labor warranty on repairs, and 5 years parts and labor warranty on installations we want to ensure that we have performed the job completely and professionally. We are truly sorry if this information wasn't relayed to you or you disagree with our policies. Being in business since 1949, and 2nd generation plumbers, we have found this is a professional, best business practice policy that we find most homeowners are delighted with. Never the less, we would like to extend an offer to you. We would like to provide a portion of the Big Deal offered in Angie’s list, to come to your home and drain the sediment from your water heater for free and provide an estimate for any plumbing repairs that you may be interested in with no obligation. If you are interested in pursuing this offer, please contact Terry Fisher, GM, directly at 240-372-9712. He will make the necessary arrangements for a time that would be most convenient for you. We look forward to servicing you and your family soon.

As part of our service contract on our furnace, we also get a yearly plumbing inspection. The plumber arrived right on time as promised, and did a thorough job with a whole house inspection. The technician recommended we have our pressure valve replaced (signs of corrosion) and consider replacing both our hot water heaters (age). The price quotes they provided however were extremely high for the work that needs to be done. I will be hiring someone else to do the actual work because of their pricing. To recap, nice work on the inspection, nice technician, but very high prices for recommended work.

We had a coupon to use. The way they do it is they don't tell you that there is a transportation fee, a fee to come out to your house. I had them take that service fee off because it doesn't list it anywhere on the coupon. So they did. There should be more explanation on their website or on Angie's list that they charge a fee towards the structured pricing on their service. It all needs to be explained better. I'm not sure I would use them again or not, I would need to do more research.
Description of Work: I used Benjamin Franklin Plumbing. I had an under-counter cold water filter that they connected. I had it hooked up wrong and it was leaking. They didn't even check it but did seal it and fixed a pipe coming out of my sump pump. I had a hole in the pipe.

Terry, the owner, was very friendly and helpful. A very nice lady even followed up the next day to make sure we had the job covered. We actually got a same-day appointment, which was impressive because most plumbers were either booked or not working due to inclement weather. Vincent, the technician, was very smart in showing us the fee schedule for their services before he started any work. It took me several minutes to decide whether or not I was going to have him do the work because the prices were very high. (This was very awkward to stand there while someone waited for my decision, but the price for cleaning the drain was in the same range as purchasing a major appliance.) I rated them a "D" in price because the definition for a "C" is fair, and I think the prices are well beyond even premium fees. I don't think their price points could be considered standard for this area. I understand that Ben Franklin is a franchise, and there is overhead related to that, however the services are overpriced. Vincent was very nice, and did a fine job clearing the drain. It took two attempts to get the drain clear. (He suspected a buildup of grease in a poorly sloped drain that made it susceptible to blockages.) He wore foot coverings, put down a cloth in the work area, and explained a great deal to us. So, while I am grateful for the work done well, I agonize over the cost incurred.

The tech left without fixing anything because he didn't have the part and he didn't think replacing a $30 part was going to fix the problem. I was disappointed that nothing got accomplished and I paid $100 for the service call. And then the tech was trying to sell me on a $3000 to $7500 for a new water heater I ultimately did not need. I then called another local plumber who: 1. Didn't charge service fees2. Identified the problem as the PRV and FIXED the problem by replacing it3. Advise me that I probably have 5 more years of life left in the water heater4. Gave me ideas of what to look for when the water heater really needed to be replaced5. Charged me only $140 for the whole deal6. Invoiced me 2 weeks after performing the services My water heater no longer leaks hot water from the PRV as expected and it been 5 month. Safe to say the Benjamin Franklins Tech really didnt understand what needed to be done.
Description of Work: I called because I had a pressure relief valve (PRV) on my water heater leaking. Tech technician showed up on time and was very courteous. I explained to the technician the leaking only occurred when the water heater was on and heating water to make it hot. I also explained that I was thinking that the PRV only needs to be replaced according to what I researched online, which was the case for everyone else experience the problem online. So basically asked him to replace a $30 part on the exterior of the water heater that was failing because of a faulty spring that went bad over 10 years time. Again, I explained that all my info/reseach suggested this was the best and simplest way to attempt to fix the problem. It was at least something to try first. The tech didn't agree with me, explaining that since the water heater was "so old" it probably may have other problems that are causing the leak and suggested that I replace the unit with something newer like a wall mounted tankless unit. I requested for him to try to replace the PRV first, then he said he didn't have any in the truck and would have to drive to Frederick (40 min) to get one -- but he again highly recommended that that wouldn't solve the problem. Ultimately he gave me a the following prices:$300 to replace the PRVSeveral quotes on replacing a 75 gallon gas water heater ranging from $3000 - 7500

I entered into a 2 year service agreement with Benjamin Franklin Plumbing and this was the initial plumbing/water heater inspection of my home since I signed up. Vincent Rednowers was the inspector and he was extremely thorough, professional, and took the time to explain each part of the inspection. When we sat down to go over the deficiencies he found he never once pushed me to get corrections made immediately. Together we prioritized what has to be done and the prices he quoted were very fair, not cheap, but fair. We left things that I would contact the company (requesting Vincent do the work) at a future date. This was fine and I really appreciated the thorough inspection, discussion of the findings, and no high pressure sales pitch.I have used Benjamin Franklin Plumbing before and that's why I bought the service agreement. Very good company to work with.

They were pleasant, professional and on time. But their estimate for a tankless hot water heater was almost double another contractor's proposal for the exact same unit.
