J&M Concrete is a family business with over 30 years of experience. I started in the industry when I was just 16 years old. We take great pride in the quality of work we do. When we get done with a project, the difference is night and day. Whatever the project may be, you can definitely count on a job well done the first time around.
Description of Work: J&M repaved my driveway. They were very friendly, knowledgable, responsive, punctual and professional. I had a question after the work was done and the owner drove over to my house on a Saturday morning to walk me through it. I would highly recommend them and hire them again. |

He was very prompt in responding to my phone calls. He was so anxious, in fact, to get the work started that he called and wanted to come right away. I told him I needed to talk more and schedule a good time, which he did do with me. After work was complete, we noticed the lamp post wasn't secure in the ground. A couple of weeks later, he came out and poured more concrete to secure the post.
Description of Work: They put in new concrete steps & a walkway to the front of my house.

After doing a little homework on line about how the problem could be repaired. The first two contractors just kind of went along with my ideas ( I have never worked with concrete before ). Marvin listened to my ideas and then he made suggestions that made sense. He also came in at the best price of the three I had contacted ( one from Angies list and one that was recommended to me by a friend ). I found Marvin very easy to work with throughout the whole process. He adapted well to some minor changes as the job progressed. He showed up for work as promised and performed the work in a professional manner. But more than anything he is very easy to talk to and it kind of felt like this was a friend of the family that was helping me out. I would not hesitate to hire J&M Concrete again for concrete work or for any other project small or large that I would need.
Description of Work: Marvin and his crew removed three fourths of my concrete driveway next to my house ( 22 years old ) that had cracked and settled, allowing surface water to flow towards the house causing moisture to begin showing on my basement wall. After speaking with 3 different contractors about how they would repair this and prevent this from re-occurring in the future we determined that Marvin's way of fixing this problem was the most sensible. After removing the old driveway Marvin drilled 5 pilings along the side of the house to support the new driveway. he connected these 5 pilings with a concrete bar and then he poured the driveway on top of this. He also swaled the driveway in the middle to allow the surface water to drain away from the house and to run down the middle of the driveway to the street.

I called Marvin to get an estimate and he came by the house when I wasn't there to see what needed to be done. They were able to do the work within a week of getting the estimate, and they did great work. They showed up mid-morning to start jack-hammering the old sidewalk - so as not to wake up the neighbors - and finished the work that day. He just had to come back to remove the 2x4s. All in all, a really good experience.
Description of Work: I had Marvin and his crew replace a 30' sidewalk that had been sinking, and put in a front step where a wood step had been. They completely removed the sidewalk, placed gravel beneath, and poured new concrete.

I unfortunately had to go through two designs trying to get the volume of concrete down to lower cost. Plus, the pad was on a slight slope. Marvin was patient with the process and ultimately gave the best price between three bidders. It was not an easy site and the cold came in early but everything went as well as can be expected. Another contractor with a different attitude could have made things worse. I am glad I went with Marvin.
Description of Work: Marvin poured a large concrete pad with pier footings for an Amish built garage I ordered. He was extremely precise with the garage fitting perfectly. I appreciated his attention to detail and making sure I was pleased with his work. I would highly recommend him.

Marvin is a small business owner and does most of the work. VERY precise and professional. Somewhat the perfect perfect person to lead and do the job. Has some assistants help him out with the grunt work. But he is the one to do the estimate and do the job. Checked up after the job was finished to make certain we were happy with the results. Get other estimates so that you have a good basis to negotiate price. But total quality work.
Description of Work: Day 1 Removed old driveway, pad to street and sidewalk. Day 2 put down gravel, rebar and wood forms for new work. Day 3 poured and finished work.

Great! J & M Concrete did exactly what they said they would. They were professional and knowledgeable. Because the scope of the job changed, Marvin came out twice to provide estimates. Both times he was on-time. When the day came to complete the work, Marvin and one helper came out. They did the job as estimated and cleaned-up after themselves. All in all a great job.
Description of Work: The apron between my garage and driveway was cracked. It needed to be removed and replaced. A small retaining wall was also needed.

We are happy with the result, and Marvin was very professional and skilled. He works on his own with a couple of subs to do the larger parts of the project. Because he works on his own, it sometimes took a day or two to connect during the planning stages, but he always met his commitments and was punctual, efficient, and clean. Part of the adjoining slab cracked while he was pouring the new one, but that's the fault of the previous workmanship, not his. We also would have liked to have more choices in the aggregate, but the Delaware river pebbles are pretty and it looks like the patio has always been there (the house was built in 1931). Our design was unconventional in a couple of ways, but Marvin took it in stride. The finish work could have been a bit more polished, but he did a very good job overall.
Description of Work: Poured a 12x20 foot custom-designed, exposed aggregate patio. Dug out what used to be a crawl space under a sun porch. Sank three10x60 inch corrugated metal pipes into to serve as supports for future patio roof. Framed, rebar-ed, and pour a 4 inch slab of concrete with Delaware river pebbles. Power-washed off the top surface to expose the pebbles. Sealed the surface.

He came out when he said he would and did everything that I expected him to. He took photos. He seemed like a really nice guy & knew the business. We just decided not to use them because we wanted to get more estimates done, and we're still in that process.

This is one of the best companies I've ever dealt with. Another contractor (a GC contacted through Angie's List who we'd used before) gave an estimate of $13,000 for the same job. We thought that was crazy went back to the list. Marvin returned my call the same day and came out that evening to look at the job. We got an estimate the next day, and the job was done within a week. As you can see from the photos, they had to use a pump truck to pump concrete into the basement through a window. They drilled horizontal holes to place rebar to connect the new section with the original slab so that there would be no unevenness at the joint if the house settled (which never occurred to me) as well as laying vapor barrier and wire mesh where the concrete was being poured. The finish was excellent and the new section looks great. They were careful to avoid making a mess (although there was some, which I consider unavoidable when you're working with cement, it was nothing major). We were so impressed with these guys that we're going to call them back to pour the slab for our shed and a patio out back we have planned. Oh, and the write up says they use subcontractors, but the only subs I saw were the pump truck and cement mixer that they brought out; they did all the work themselves.
Description of Work: Poured a 12x12 slab section in our basement that for some reason was never done (it's a full basement).

The initial reason I selected J&M Concrete was Marvin's punctuality and thoroughness. He said he'll show up at 8:00 AM on a Tuesday to look the project over, and he was here promptly at 8:00. He promised a quote by next evening at 5:00PM, and I had the quote at 8:30 AM. Marvin and his crew showed up on time when he promised the work will start. He made sure I was happy with what he was doing every step of the way. I asked him to run drainage and cable and electric conduits under the driveway, and he was more than accommodating. The shed slab is about 100 feet away from the street. He took the concrete debris from the driveway to fill in the slab by wheelbarrows, not by a motorized anything. He was worried about ruining the lawn. It was his idea and recommendation, not mine. He moved the wet cement from the truck to the slab location also by wheelbarrows. When he was finished, he made sure to smooth out the sides of the slab so they won't be a 23" high eyesore, and made sure to leave the entire yard as clean as it was before he started. He treated it like his own.
Description of Work: Removed existing driveway (34' x 10') and sidewalk (16'x 3'), and poured a new driveway and sidewalk. Also poured a slab for a shed in the back yard (about 100 feet away from the street). The slab is 17' x 12'. My backyard is slanted, so the slab ended up being 23" (almost 2 feet) high on one side, and 8" high on the other side to prevent drainage water from running over it. (Pictures attached.) Needless to say, that was a lot of concrete. It took over 6 cubic yards of concrete to pour the slab.
