I spoke with the company and sheduled a time two weeks ahead for them to come to our house and review what we needed and provide recomendations and an estimate. I explaned I could only meet early in the mornning, near the end of the day or on weekends. The first availble time was two weeks out which was fine so we agreed to it. They confirmed the appointment the day before. On the morning of the appointment they called and said they could not make it. I asked to schedule another time and after being put on hold multiple times was informed they could only scheule appointments inthe middle of the day during the week. I asked why they had scheduled this one for the end of the day and why had they not told me this two weeks ago. They had no answer.
Description of Work: No service was provided they failed to show up.

It is true. We totally blew it on this appointment. I personally called the Member's husband yesterday and apologized when I got into the office and heard how the scheduling problem had been handled. We are in the midst of an office transition -- can you tell? New operations manager is in training this week. I hope and expect to get back to a higher level of professionalism very soon!

Mr. Wilcox came at the appointed time and looked over the work I wanted done. I wanted a ceiling fan/light fixture installed, a light fixture replaced in the basement and new spotlights installed on the overhang outside my home. He left stating that he would contact me with a estimate for the work. When I had no response sfter two weeks i called and was told by the person answering the phone that he would check on the estimate and give me a response. It is now a month and I have had no response.

This report is a reflection of the same circumstances that I commented on in the next report. We have only 3 employees in the office. I let one employee go three weeks ago, and it has been tough to keep up with the workload. Once again, a new employee is now in training. We really regret the inconveniences that have resulted from the transition. Tracy Wilcox

I had attempted to install a celing fan but ran into a puzzling electrical issue - a drop in voltage on the 'hot' line. The Wilcox electrician immediately diagnosed the problem and engineered a solution without digging into the walls and that safely ensures my new ceiling fan is wired in. They finished installing the ceiling fan and didn't leave until everything was put together, tested, and the site was cleaned up.

I met Wilcox Electric for the first time this week. The night before I had a scenario that required the fire dept coming to my Capitol Hill house and I was left scurrying for a electrician. Wilcox came highly recommended by a neighbor, and within no time the owner Steve was on the phone with me assessing the situation and an appropriate course of action. The next morning Dale arrived and began patiently going over my electrical system. He thoroughly inspected and tested all my outlets, circuit box, cold water house ground, and I followed their recommendation that I install a whole house surge protector to further protect against power surges. He eventually discovered during his investigation that my satellite dish mounted on my roof wasn't grounded. This discovery made sense as the reason why I had to call the fire dept the night before based on the damage sustained. During the whole time he was at my house, Dale was courteous (to my dog too!) and allowed me to watch his work, ask questions and he provided answers and explanation of what he was doing along the way. He performed some additional work while he was there, including installing a dimmer switch in a bedroom. I also asked him to look at some future electrical projects I was interested in, and he had a great recommendation for two hard to assess ceiling joist areas where I wanted to install recessed lights that surface ceilings lights would easily work instead and be more cost effective to install. Overall I was very pleased with Wilcox and so appreciative of how responsive they were at a very stressful time for me as a homeowner. I look forward to working with them in the future. ps: The box "approximately how much did you spend?" is listed as zero because I asked that he just have Wilcox send me the bill after he had time to compute the multifaceted day's work.
Description of Work: Inspected circuit panel box and house electric system for general failure, including all outlets for proper ground and cold water ground. Installed a whole house surge protector in panel box. Installed a dimmer switch.

Called Wilcox, and electrician showed up exactly on time. He was totally transparent and showed me what he was doing. Electrician was very polite and with minimal instruction just explained that the bathroom vanity would look 'perfect' when he was done. He was right. We are already planning future electrical projects and can't wait to call a reliable service like Wilcox again.

I spent about $2500 on that service. I liked that the owner Steve Wilcox came out to do the estimate himself. He was a very cordial, very friendly nice gentleman. He was very thorough in discussing the options with me because I just assumed that all I needed was the service entrance cable. He pointed out to me some things about the breaker box and also that the amps were not enough to run everything properly. No one had ever pointed that out to me before. He told me that we could go ahead and try to do it economically, but when it is inspected a full heavy up would have most likely been requested. He said that it would be simpler if I went ahead and did the heavy up now I really liked the price because it was very reasonable. I also spoke to his wife who is his office manager, Tracey and she was very nice and extremely pleasant. His electricians came in, did their job and cleaned up after themselves, and I could not even tell that they were there.
Description of Work: I used Wilcox Electric LLC on October 5th and they replaced a service entrance cable and upgraded the circuit breaker box.

Dale and Gerald installed an on/off switch for my A/C compressor to bring it up to code, installed a GFI outlet in the kitchen (and explained how I could modify it in future if needed), removed the previous owner's bathroom light fixtures and installed a new one, replaced a fluorescent ceiling light with a traditional incandescent fixture (no more horror-movie lighting in the hallway), and replaced an ungrounded bathroom outlet with a GFI. Dale had been recommended by a friend and he was terrific (as was Gerald): efficient, helpful, and clear. He explained everything he did, including why he was installing a junction box in the bathroom. In addition, he suggested separating the switch for the bathroom light from the ceiling fan so they can be controlled separately. Small item; very big improvement. He also informed me about the location of a plumbing pipe behind the bathroom wall where I plan to mount a cabinet, which likely saved me from an emergency plumber call. He and Gerald spent time evaluating two ceiling fans with defective switches/transmitters, and ultimately recommended replacement as cheaper than repairs. They cleaned up their workspaces and took away the old fixtures and packaging. I recommend them very highly!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this company. The technician who came out explained exactly what needed to be done and why. He met with the inspector, and ensured that we got all of the paperwork we needed. He was kind, professional, and completely straightforward.
Description of Work: When we bought our house it had an old electrical meter and the bones for a new meter. Pepco required a certified electrician sign off on the new meter equioment before it would convert the old to the new. It turned out that the new electrical meter had been installed in a somewhat shoddy manner, so we needed some work done as well as an inspection.

I was a little nervous when scheduling appointment I could not even get an estimate or range of how much the service call would cost. I would have appreciated it had she at least told me the hourly rate. The appointment was scheduled for 2pm, so at 2:30pm I called to see if there was a problem with the appointment. They were very apologetic, found the electrician was delayed at previous assignment and gave me an new estimated time of arrival. David arrived before that time and apologized for being late. He examined the range and the plug that was going to be used for the new range and had to call another electrician to get the correct outlet. While we were waiting: he disconnected the old range and the improvised wiring the previous owner had created checked the hard wired fire alarm and made sure it was working properly; since it did not have battery back-up he recommended a battery powered smoke & carbon monoxide detector be installed nearby disabled the electrical switch for the attic fan that could no longer be used When his colleague arrived, they went to work installing the outlet and making sure it would fit the electrical plug that would be used for the range. They cleaned up after themselves and the previous owners sweeping up items found when the range was moved. Excellent service! I am keeping their number close should I eve need more electrical work done in the future.
Description of Work: We found that the range that came with our house was hard wired in to the wall. The appliance company would not remove it or install our new range until an electrical outlet was installed. We found Wilcox on Angie's list and asked them to disconnect the range, install a plug, check on a hard wired fire alarm and disable another electrical switch.

I am so grateful for the generous comments and the good feedback provided by the Member. I specifically remember this call because the electrician was running late. Regarding the lack of information on hourly rates, I totally understand her point of view. I will remind my staff in the office to be sure to provide this information. It was an oversight, since it is our policy to inform customers of rates when the appointment is being scheduled. Tracy Wilcox

Nick ( not sure about his name) showed up on time with another tech. Once I explained the work I needed the tech started working on the pendants while Nick and I review the new outlet options. Initially I wanted two but one required additional mess (breaking walls etc.) so decided to get just one. The two techs worked for 1.5 hour. They properly covered the working area (the pendants were to be installed in the kitchen) and promptly cleaned up after finished. Very professional, polite and most of all considerate of my house. A few days later I received an electronic invoice from owner who put her contact information in case I had questions or concerns. Nice little touch. I will use this company again.

I had a two wall fish's done for some cable at my home and the technicians were good at what they did, however, the front office was a bit shady (or forgetfull) on giving me an initial price quote. When I called initially I was told specifically that it was a flat rate of 148$ per hour plus 98$ every hour after (not including materials). Based on that price I asked for two wall fishes and some cable work to be done and budgeted about 500 for the job. To my shock and suprise when the job was done they said .. "that was just for one person, additional people are more".If that was the case then I would defintely had just one wall fish done (the most important) as opposed to keeping the guys there for several additional hours doing other cable work. A bit miffed at the fact that they did not state this clearly up front, OR affirm this when they got there to begin work. I will say that they DID knock off a tiny bit of the bill for the confusion in order to try and make amends.... but not enough in my opinion. Word to the wise: Be sure to get something in writing BEFOREHAND on total costs for the job when the techs show up.. don't rely on their front office to give you any quotes.Other than that they were on time and friendly
Description of Work: Two wall fish's for cable line on first and second floor along with some cable work (capping, splitting etc) the cable and running line from the junction box.

This was an unfortunate situation. In the office, we try to communicate pricing to customers comprehensively, and I believe that we largely succeed in doing so. Nonetheless, the customer raises an important issue. I have asked my staff to introduce a new policy in which the technician hands out our a Hourly Rates sheet upon entering a customer's property. This pricing mishap has damaged our reputation with this Member and that is really regrettable.

I called Wilcox after hurricane Irene damaged my main panel. At the time I had no power and the utility company would not re-energize the home until the panel was fixed. I explained all of this to the extremely courteous receptionist, who immediately told me that Wilcox could help. She asked me to hold while she spoke with the owner Steve Wilcox to determine how to move forward. Despite a busy schedule with other emergency calls, within an hour Steve was on his way to my house to make an estimate. The price for a new panel was extremely reasonable, and Steve even went as far as to contact the utility company to ensure they would re-energize the house later that evening. I wasn't able to be home during the estimate, but Steve called me every step of the way to keep me informed on progress. The job was completed by his technician Nick later in the day to my complete satisfaction. I've worked with a lot of different service providers over the years and have NEVER had such a positive experience. Every staff member I spoke to was responsive and polite. Steve went above and beyond what was required, and his technician Nick was extremely respectful of my home and my dog. I would HIGHLY recommend Wilcox. I wish I had discovered them sooner.
Description of Work: After hurricane Irene took out a utility pole on my block, main panel, meter, and outdoor electrical hook up were both badly damaged. Wilcox replaced the panel at a very reasonable price and repaired my overhead hookup free of charge.

Electrician (Dale) was punctual, knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. The office was easy to work with to make the appointment and worked with our schedule. We would definitely hire them again and recommend them. Dale answered all our questions and gave us advice on working with an older home (built in 1951). The only outstanding matter is that they didn't have the right circuit breaker for our fuse box so they said they’d special order one and we haven't received it yet.

I called last week and they immediately let me speak to Steve (the owner) to discuss the work I wanted done. I was pleased that they could come out within a few days as well. Steve arrived with Dale and Cesar around 9 and we walked through the house to look at the jobs I wanted done. They gave me an amazingly accurate estimate, and after answering all my questions- got straight to work. Dale and Cesar were great- they were both extremely professional and managed to get done much more in one day than I could have hoped! They made sure to ask exactly where I wanted things installed, and even walked through each job with me once complete to make sure it was exactly how I wanted it. They were constantly going over methods and working hard the entire day. And, going above and beyond, they even swept up and vacuumed afterwards to make sure they left things clean. Overall, I could not be more pleased. Steve was extremely personable, made sure to explain everything, answered all of my questions, and was precise and accurate with his estimates (both for the work and for materials). Dale and Cesar were both friendly, very professional, and executed the work perfectly! I will not hesitate to call them again for any electrical work I need done in the future, and I would highly recommend them to others!
Description of Work: Dale and Cesar installed and wired 3 way systems in my 2 bathrooms, living room, and kitchen and installed a ventiliation fan in my upstairs bathroom. They made sure to ask exactly where I wanted things installed and even walked through each job with me to make sure it was perfect! They also removed my fridge circuit off the GFI in my kitchen (so now there is no chance of it cutting off and spoiling my groceries) and installed plates over unsafe uncovered panels in the attic.

I was very impressed with Steve Wilcox the owner of the company, he gave me a lot of info and help in helping to select new light fixtures for the kitchen, checked the old circuit breaker box installed over 40 years ago, changed the light timer in the kitchen for outdoor security light, set the timer for on and off times (very complicated and difficult); all in all I definitely intend to use this firm again and most important I felt Mr. Wilcox was very trustworthy and competent with his electrical work knowledge. I intend to use Wilcox electrical for future work
Description of Work: I called the Wilcox company to replace or repair the timer in the kitchen which controls the outdoor light (for security); Mr. Steve Wilcox came and indicated the light fixture needs to be replaced, he connected the new timer set which I had purchased, also reset the on and off time switch which is always very complicated to manage. Steve was a very intelligent, articulate professional and I got his opinion on whether to replace an antiquated circuit breaker box, also some electrical noises sometimes occurring in my bedroom, new lighting in the kitchen

In order to get an early a.m. appointment I had to schedule about 10 days ahead. Wilcox sent two electricians, Dale and Cesar, and I was fully informed in advance about the company's pricing, so there were no surprises there. The new lighting fixtures were installed quickly and I have had no problems with them since. There was no clear diagnosis about what was causing the problem with the garage. Dale installed a new breaker, tightened all the wires, fixed some wiring to the heat pump and double checked the sub-panel to make sure the double tapping that was found during the home inspection had been fixed. When the garage problem reappeared in a few days I called Wilcox and they sent Dale out again, at no additional charge. He checked everything out again, replaced a light fixture that could have been hitting the garage door. So far so good - everything is working fine. I think Wilcox over schedules their people, and they inevitably start running late after one or two jobs. So unless you don't mind waiting around, I recommend trying to get an appointment early in the day.
Description of Work: I had several problems -both big and small- that needed attention in the house I had recently purchased. I wanted to change two exterior and one interior lighting fixtures. In addition the electrical connection to the detached garage was frequently shorting out.

I was told the technician from Wilcox would arrive around 3:00 p.m. He arrived somewhere between 12 or 12:30 p.m. He examined the furnace and identified the problem as the breaker. He fixed it and was out of the house before 1:00 p.m. During the time he was here, he wasprofessional and personable.
Description of Work: The air conditioner was not working... The electrician said it was the breaker. He fixed it in a matter of minutes. Wilcox Electric removed two old light switches and replaced them with new ones. Wilcox also removed an old ceiling fan in a bedroom and replaced it with a new one with remote control that I provided. I was a little disappointed with the work because they had installed a ceiling rod on the fan which lowered it too much for the room, even though I told them I wanted it flush mounted to the ceiling. So after they installed it, they had to take it down and re-install it flush. At some point during the installation, they supported the fan on the bed which left a round black grease mark on the comforter. Additionally, unfortunately, the fan was activated by another remote somewhere in the area, so I had to take down the fan to access the internal remote switch and re-program the internal remote myself. Wilcox also removed an external porch light and replaced it was a new one that I provided. There were two light fixture boxes on the back porch, one higher than the other. The light that was removed was a flood light on the higher box and I wanted a regular porch light installed on the lower box. Unfortunately, Wilcox installed the porch light on the higher of the two boxes. I did not have them move the light because I did not want to incur additional hourly labor charges, even though the high porch light looks odd. I decided I would correct it at a later time. I hired Wilcox on two previous occasions with great results. This time, I was disappointed in their work though.

Dear Member, It took me awhile to realize that you had submitted three, separate reports for three, separate visits completed back in 2009 and 2010. Thank you for your remarks. They are thoughtful and detailed, especially given the amount of time that has elapsed. One electrician is responsible for the two positive reports. He is a good electrician and recently left Wilcox Electric for a better position in a corporate environment. (Good for him, but we miss him!) A second electrician is responsible for the unfavorable report. We let this electrician go about two months after the time of your service call for reasons similar to what you have noted. Your three reports are interesting to me for what they reveal about the challenges of attracting and retaining good employees. A small contracting business such as Wilcox Electric competes with larger companies as well as unionized companies working on larger commercial / government jobs. Over the last five years, Wilcox Electric has been able to attract good electricians. We pay higher wages than previously, but it's difficult to affordable provide the full array of benefits that the best electricians can get elsewhere. Separately, we have also learned to manage our employees better (and the learning continues!). Customer feedback, from Angie's List members and otherwise, is so important in this regard, as it gives us a glimpse of the electrician's performance in the field. Everyone in Wilcox Electric, by the way, is acutely aware of the Angie's List spotlight, so to speak. That is partly why I am such a big fan of Angie's List -- it should bring out the best in the companies presented on the list. I hope that you will continue to call on us for your electrical service needs. Thanks again for your remarks. Tracy Wilcox

The day I moved into a newly purchased house, a wall socket shorted out and threw out all the breakers in the house. It was raining and dark and the movers had been difficult. When the sparks started flying from the socket, I could only imagine the worst. Luckily, the socket didn't spark and throw off the breakers until the movers were just finishing up. They finished in the dim light and once they had left, I went to a cafe with internet service to look for an electrician on Angie's List. Luckily for me, Wilcox was willing to send an electrician right away, even though it was late in the afternoon. Wilcox Electric was quickly able to determine that insulation on one of the wires in the outlet box had been nicked and come in contact with the metal outlet box which caused it to short out. The insulation was repaired and the socket again worked. Once again, the house had electricity. While Wilcox was at the house, I inquired about the possibility of attached on/off switches to two wall sconces I wanted to install on either side of the fireplace. The sconces that were there at the time were always on because there was no control switch for the power. Wilcox made at opening at the bottom of the sconces and installed toggle switches I had provided. Wilcox also removed a light switch upstairs and capped the wires when we were unable to determine what the switch was supposed to control.
Description of Work: Repaired a shorted out wall electrical socket. Installed on/off switches to two wall fixtures. Removed a three-way switch.
