From my very first phone call with the people at Wilcox, I felt respected and listened to. Everyone I interacted with from the electricians to the administrative side of things was pleasant and easy to talk with. Our job was supposed to be 3 days but Tom and Ceasar were able to complete all the work in 2. Tom explained everything they were doing and involved us every step of the way. I would definitely hire Wilcox again. I cannot say enough nice things about this company.
Description of Work: Replaced our outlets, grounded the wires, installed a whole house surge protector, wired our garage, installed dedicated circuits and fixed ceiling fan wiring.

We had a great experience working with Wilcox Electric on our electrical updates and remodeling. From the initial quote to the completion of the job, everyone was so polite, professional and personable. The people at Wilcox kept us up to date on schedule changes, answering emails and phone calls. Kena, Tom and Cesar were great to work with.Tom has been amazing to work with. This company truly has a person who demonstrates every quality one looks for when having any service completed, especially inside your home. He explained everything he did, made very appropriate recommendations, was so very personable, and was quick and extremely efficient. His knowledge base is very impressive. He made sure to tidy up any mess that was made in the progress of all jobs performed. Our son who is 22 months old was immediately taken with Tom. He always made sure to speak to him as he came in and out of rooms, attic and outside. Cesar was also very personable, efficient, and also very professional. (I spoke more to Tom, as he was the one talking more to us about the work they would be doing. Cesar was terrific as well, he was just usually in the attic. :)Having worked in several service related companies myself, I tend to be very observant to the "little things" which mean a lot to most customers. I have often been disappointed in one way or another by work done by some companies/employees. This is definitely not the case with Tom, Cesar and Wilcox Electric. We are lifetime customers.
Description of Work: Installed whole house surge proctector, several new circuits (runs from downstair garage to second floor), installed recessed lighting in upstair kitchen and downstair family room, installed 4 ceiling fans with dedicated switches and hung 2 ceiling lights.

From the initial call to the end of the procedure it was a pleasant encounter. What was upsetting was the cost. I was quoted $500 when I made the call and described the job. Even with a 10% discount the final total was $720. $640 for labor is in my reckoning excessive. That two men were required for this job, again, seems to me excessive.

Response from Wilcox Electric LLC
I have taken a couple of days to think about how to respond best to this report. The first point that I would like to express is that I am disappointed that the Member did not call my office to discuss his concern about cost at the time of the job. Two months have passed since we completed his work. We work to provide good value in this business, and I don't want the idea that our labor charges are excessive to stick. We are not the cheapest electricians in the area, but we do run an honest and legitimate business. As a second point, concerning the actual cost of the work, I am not sure that the Member's assessment is fair. I asked the owner of Wilcox Electric, Steve, a random question yesterday: "two recessed lights and one switch. If you had to give an on-the-spot estimate, sight unseen, what would you say?" His answer was "4 hours at least. One electrician." The Member was charged for four hours, two men. The electrical helper added $184 to the labor charge ($46 per hour). Was he fully utilized for the four hours? We don't know. I don't expect the electrician to remember at this time if the helper was working steadily the entire time. That could have been determined and, if necessary, addressed accordingly two months ago. As a final point, I am also concerned about the Member's statement that the office provided a $500 quote over the phone. I must emphasize that no one in the office would ever provide a hard estimate for electrical work over the phone. How could we? There are too many unknown parameters in electrical work. Even Mr. Wilcox would not provide a hard number over the phone. We do try to provide a reasonable range of possible costs. I train new employees very clearly on this point. If there is a lesson to be learned through this experience, I would ask you, the customer, to approach your contractor as soon as possible with your concerns. A good contractor will engage you and address your concerns reasonably. Thank you for your time reading my response, Tracy Wilcox.

These folks are GREAT. Professional, personable, knowledgeable. All in all a great experience. Dale and Gerald are top notch.
Description of Work: I had a problem with some circuits that had gone dead; they traced it to a tripped (and rather obscurely placed) GFI that was extremely old. While here, I had them replace some outlets in the kitchen also with newer units with GFI protection.

The alarms on the UPS units in my home office started sounding one weekend while my wife and I were both using our computers. Looking into the issue, I saw that the line voltage was only at about 108, and a little research on the internet showed that was most likely due to a bad connection somewhere in the circuit causing excessive resistance. I know this house has aluminum wiring, and we've had issues before, so I called up Wilcox Electric and explained the issue. The person on the phone was very nice, and said that our problem sounded serious (but not an emergency - which I agreed with), but found someone who could come out that evening to take a look at it. Turns out it was the owner of the company (Steve) who came, and he was very pleasant to work with. He checked several outlets on the circuit, and fixed a handful of problems. At this point we all thought everything was OK, and settled up. The next day, I noticed that the voltage was still dropping when under heavy load, so I called back. Steve came back out within a few hours, found some additional issues (inside some of the light switches!!), and at that point recommended that we have the whole house checked out, since the problems seemed widespread. Steve let us know what equipment we could pick up at the local store to save ourselves a bunch of money on parts. When I brought up the issue of completely replacing the circuits (expensive and time consuming), he suggested that we could add a few new circuits to pick up the heavy load items, and hold off on replacing the aluminum circuits until we were doing some remodeling. All of this sounded like a good idea, so I went ahead and scheduled the additional work. For the initial two visits, Nick was my electrician, and he first focused on working through all of the devices to make sure they were properly pigtailed to copper. He put new outlets in every box, put in a proper junction box where a previous person had improperly spliced up some wire, and replaced several very dated light fixtures with new ones we had purchased. On the final visit, Nick brought along a helper (Dave), and the two of them made quick work of pulling new wire from the panel in the garage all the way across the house, through a cramped attic, to the office, and adding the new outlets there. Though this entire process, every single person I had contact with from Wilcox Electric was not only thoroughly professional, but a delight to work with. They answered all of my questions, even when they were in the middle of working. They explained what they were doing, and how various devices worked. I feel much safer in my own home knowing that every inch of my electrical system was scrutinized, and every problem detected was addressed. I would highly recommend Wilcox to anyone who needs any kind of electrical work done.

As a new, first-time homeowner who's not from the area, it's very important that I find reliable, trustworthy contractors. An electrician is the first thing I've needed so far and Wilcox is a company that I believe I've found a long-term partner with. The estimate was done about a month before the service and the company owner, Steve, was very honest and informative. The day of service went very smooth. The tech who performed the work, Dale, was stuck in traffic but called to let me know, which I found to be very professional. We went through the items on the estimate and made a couple of changes, which I appreciated his flexibility in doing that. He explained to me the work that was to be done and how he'd go about it and also sought my input where appropriate. He was very kind and pleasant to talk to, yet always professional. The job took about 3 hours and came in nearly $400 under the estimate, which was excellent. Although I decided not to do one of the items on the estimate, that was still much less than I was expecting, so I was very happy with that. All in all, excellent service, excellent price, no complaints whatsoever!

After having such a positive experience with Wilcox the first time around, we requested the same electrician by name for the next set of electrical projects in our home. The work included two outdoor security lights on either side of the house, the addition of two electrical outlets to our kitchen island, and the hanging of a lighting fixture above our stairs. The jobs did require a good amount of time and we were advised to buy parts in advance to control costs and get the look we desired. What we didn't have, the electrician ordered for us based on his first visit on 4/13. During both visits, the electrician and assistant were professional (no shoes in the house), prompt, and good about keeping me informed about their progress and any decisions that I needed to make. Though we did experience some scheduling setbacks, Wilcox took responsibility and made sure the work was done before a big event that we were hosting Saturday afternoon. We have already told our friends about Wilcox and plan to continue our patronage for electrical needs. Thanks again, Wilcox.

Outstanding service from start to finish, and I am still amazed at how much better their price was compared to other highly-rated electricians for this type of routine work. They were neat around the house, even when doing some minor modifications to ensure access to wires and the circuit breaker box, and got along great with my dog. Their proactivity in dealing with the Pepco side of things was also a welcome change from other service providers we've seen on our street. The people answering the phones at their office were also extremely professional and helpful. I hope all my future contractor dealings will be this good.
Description of Work: Standard 150 amp heavy-up: replace the outside meter box and meter, replace the elderly circuit panel (with the screw-in fuses), re-label all circuits. They even dealt with a random electric line that was left uncapped by the previous owner, something that was not part of the original statement of work.

Thank you for the kind comments. I would add to the member's comments that electrical heavy-ups for single family residences are typically one-day jobs for two electricians with a follow-up visit for the electrical inspection. The price should be in the $2,000 - $3,000 range (the upper range is unusual at this company). Just a little information to file away, if needed. We sometimes hear about quotes that are substantially higher than that range. Tracy Wilcox

I had some work done in the bedroom to install an overhead light. They followed up with me on the phone which was nice. They basically reconfirmed the appointment, and it was a day in advance or something. They were here on time and worked right away and took care of it. They answered a couple of random questions that I had, that were related to that job, and it was very nice. They were nice guys and they did the work quickly and I am very happy for what they did. The pricing was second to the best. I am not really familiar with the other companies and I didn’t do a lot of price comparison, but I didn’t feel gauged. The quality of the work was very good.

we're still so perplexed as to how Wilcox can be one of your very top rated electricians in the DC area yet the owner stood us up repeatedly after our initial visit -- even more head scratching is that the initial site visit for estimate with owner went, at least we thought, very well. Then he never called back and didn't return repeated followup calls from us.

Once I realized that the Member was referencing an incident from last August, the situation made more sense. In October I had to terminate an administrative employee in our, three-person office because of this type of non-responsiveness. I was unaware last fall that this member had been ignored. Certainly that is not acceptable! I can assure all Angie's List members that we have already taken the needed measures to address this problem. We stay at the top of the ratings on Angie's List, precisely because we do not often miss the mark. I have the very, best group of electricians on staff now, and my office staff is solid. Kena, my office manager, will be on maternity leave very soon, and we are currently training a very capable man to fill in for her. I regret the shortfall with this member, and will be contacting him immediately -- six months after the fact! Thank you all in the Angie's List community for being fantastic customers. Even the criticism, I'm OK with it. It helps us improve, as the saying goes! Tracy Wilcox

Very impressed with their visit. I had work done by another electric company and wanted a 2nd opinion and estimate. I had a great experience with Wilcox all the way around. We had two separate visits from Wilcox. The technician they provided was Bill, and he was prompt, polite and efficient. He checked the wiring for the kitchen light, and it turned out to be the light fixture itself. Also, the bathroom outlet was wired incorrectly. Bill said he could come back and install a new kitchen light for us and fix the outlet, estimated about 2 hours worth of work in all. After we purchased the new kitchen fixture, we called back and Bill came out to install the light and to fix the outlet. On his second visit, he was accompanied by another worker. The work was all quiet, timely and efficient. It was a great job! At $146.00 an hour, I was a little concerned about the cost, not really knowing if this is an average cost for most electrical services. But I was so happy with the work, and with how professional these guys were. I remain happy with the work, and would use this company again for future electrical issues in my home.

Steve Wilcox came out and reviewed my plan, gave advice and followed up with a quote. He explained his approach to quoting to make sure I was comfortable and felt informed. Tom and Carlos were the team assigned to my project. Besides being very professional and friendly, they are very capable electricians. I have super high ceiling and lots of surprises behind the walls but Tom proactively figured out solutions and they did a great job. They finished on time (4 full days) and on budget which is always appreciated. Wilcox Electric is going on our preferred list for our condo and neighborhood associations.

As was the work. The panel was done, it looks very clean, all the circuits are labeled. It's great. Bill the electrician that did the job did a great job. There are a couple more projects that I am looking to get done and I will ask Daniel about them. This was a very easy process. I would recommend Wilcox Electric to anybody that needs some electrical work. They do good work and don't waste your time.
Description of Work: I had a stab lok panel (150 amp service) and there was also a sub panel. The work on the original panel was shoddy and stab lok panels are considered something of a fire hazard so I wanted it replaced and to get rid of the sub panel. Daniel came in and provided the estimate. He was really easy to deal with. There wasn't anything really complicated, the service that I was asking for was pretty straightforward and Daniel took all of five seconds to get there... Very refreshing. There was no hard sale, no upselling, just told me what he thought the price would be, sent a bid later that day that mathced his off the cuff estimate. He was just straight to the point. I appreciate it when people don't waste my time. He was pleasant and nice, but he got to business before shooting the breeze. I really appreciate that. So getting the bid was no problem, extremely easy...

We are so grateful to hear such kind comments from our customers. Steve & I feel really good about the electricians that work for us, and it's nice to see that our customers have a good experience using our services. This member describes the the type of service that we strive to provide every day -- easy and responsive estimates; good, clean work; and absolutely no unnecessary upselling. I had used Wilcox for previous jobs, and they had done quality work before and noticied the deficiencies in my service and panel. Good quality of the work, arrived on time, very good communication of the project status. One worker had to leave to handle an emergency call part way through, which did extend the duration of the job, but was not an issue for me. Very good coordination with PG County inspections for arranging & scheduling of the inspection.

The work took a day and a half to accomplish. The second day there was no charge for travel time. When Dale, the lead electrician with 25 years of experience, was delayed by traffic the first day, he called to say so. He and his assistant worked steadily through lunch while they were here. On the second day, our telephone service went down while they were here, and Dale worked off the clock to do what he could to restore it, even though it turned out that he had not caused the service interruption. Both Dale and his assistant were professional, hard-working, competent, and cleaned up after themselves. They were nice to deal with, and I would not hesitate to call them again. I am very pleased with the work done. I think the price they charged was fair for the work done, especially considering that they did not charge me for the time he spent trying to figure out whether he had done something to cause the telephone system to stop working. They gave a 10% discount to us as Angie's List customers.
Description of Work: We had 6 ceiling lights installed, 7 undercabinet lights replaced, outdoor lights and motion detector replaced, internal telephone wires and internet cables moved and fished through walls, and maybe a couple of other minor electrical things.

Thank you for the comments. Dale is indeed a top notch electrician. Wilcox Electric remains grateful to Angie's List and its members for continuing to provide valuable feedback. We post every Angie's List report in a central location for all to see -- well, the good ones. When we do get negative feedback, we will certainly talk to the electrician concerned, and it may become a subject of discussion for a staff meeting. I appreciate this member's concern that he had to wait so long for both appointments. We will try to minimize that in the future!

The breaker tripped five days after they initially came out, so Dale from Wilcox came out on Sat to look at everything. He went through my entire electrical box to check connections and solved the issue of the breaker tripping. My other electricians were sloppy at best and didn't know how to handle the old wiring. Wilcox (Dale) walked me through the situation and helped educate me on this issues. I not only feel safer, they didn't charge me for the follow up visit. Thanks Dale!
Description of Work: Wilcox is great. I had them come out to help put dimmers on old wiring and fix a wire that came disconnected. Unfortunately the old wiring in my house makes electrical more complicated than it already is, so I called Wilcox. They came out and reconnected the wire and shared that the dimmers were not going to fit in the older box size.

The electrician was EXACTLY on time and very knowledgeable and courteous. He even suggested that I order the fans myself to save money. The day they came to install everything they again were on time, were very friendly and efficient. I was so happy that they cleaned up after themselves - our former electrician always left a big mess behind.I would recommend Wilcox to anyone looking for great service at a good price.
Description of Work: Wilcox replaced two ceiling fans, installed a new outdoor outlet, replaced a ceiling fixture, replaced a bathroom ceiling fixture and examined our problematic 'pot' lighting in the family room. We were having electrical issues -- flickering lights -- at out home. The owner sent her repair person out who quickly realized he was out of his league, but identified the problem and cut the power for safety reasons. He told the owner to get her electrician in ASAP. He came the next day, but sixteen hours later with no resolution and I began to wonder if the owner's electrician was up to the job. I started calling around for potential providers of emergency service and to get a verbal assessment. I spoke with Nick from Wilcox, who was willing to come the next morning bright and early to fix the issue. He was very understanding about me having to work out things with the owner first and provided a phone number where he could be reached if the work was to be done. He was also polite enough to provide me the proper terminology so I could call around and quickly explain the issue to other electricians who might be able to make it out the same night. I was impressed.

The only glitch was a scheduling error, whereby the electrican was scheduled to be at 2 appointments at the same time. So there was a delay in his arrival. On the other hand, they called us repeatedly when they realized the mistake to notify us. But that was outweighed by the professionalism and excellent service we received. We were very nervous about the potential for an electrical fire, and they took good care of the problem. We had confidence in the service.
Description of Work: Combination ceiling fan and light fixture in our son's room stopped working, was hot to the touch, and smelled like it was overheating. Needed service immediately, and regular electrician was away. Wilcox came the next day, sent 2 electricians, removed the fixture (the motor had seized up) and installed a new one.

I spent a few minutes with the technician explaining the situation and that paid huge dividends on the back end. Very professional and took the time and effort to keep the existing walls intact.
Description of Work: The technician came in and found several hidden splitters on cable lines that had been run by the former owner of the house. Once the splitters were removed, and dedicated lines were run, the signal issues we had w sat. Signals getting to multiple TVs went away. The technician was very knowledgable and made every effort to not cut holes unnecessarily.

I called Wilcox Engineering to install two ceiling fans, with wall switches and remote controls. The company was very responsive--although they needed to reschedule my initial appointment, they were able to come install the fans the same week that I called. Two gentlemen-an electrician and his assistant-arrived right on time, gave me an estimate that ended up being right on, and could not have been more polite and professional. They had both fans, both wall switches and had both remotes working perfectly in about three hours. They left things clean, even taking the boxes for the fans with them. I am very pleased with my experience and will not hesitate to use them in the future. Highly recommend.

My experience with them was absolutely wonderful. I loved them. When they were not able to come at the scheduled time that we had prearranged, I immediately got a call back - I think it was a day or two before the scheduled date - and they asked me if they could come a little later, and that was fine with me. When they got here, the man explained to me everything that he was doing. He was extremely helpful and very kind. I liked the whole experience. I would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Wilcox Electric LLC for electrical work.
