Wilcox has earned my undying gratitude for a job well done (go Nick!) and also for referring a GC to me. I was left in the lurch by a dishonest contractor when I put my initial call into Wilcox. Steve Wilcox came, took a look and quickly and professionally bid the electrical portion of the job. Steve also saw that I was in dire straights as my home had been left in an unfinished and vulnerable state by an unscrupulous GC and passed along a name of someone who could help me put my home back together and finish the job. The referral was a life saver. The electrician who did the work, Nick, did a great job -- we worked together over a number of months. Everyone on their staff was professional, courteous, kind and we share more than a few laughs. It was a total win-win for me and I can easily recommend them.
Description of Work: I completely renovated the second floor and upgraded service to whole house. The work also included replacing non-grounded existing work in the basement and first floor.

What a gratifying report. Thank you so much! It was a very pleasant collaboration between us and the Member, and we were pleased to be of service. We had recommended a GC with whom we have worked for many years; we know each others' ways, and we work together very well. That is not to be taken for granted! We hope you are now able to enjoy your home!

The guys (3) from Wilcox Electric were great. They called to give an update on their arrival time, and were very professional/efficient when they arrived, making sure I understood everything they were going to do. They did great work. And, when I had a question about something a few days later, they sent one of the guys back to the house to check it out for me that same day. Really, I couldn't be happier with their work. I expect I will use them again for future electrical needs. I also must say I was particularly pleased with the estimate I received prior to contracting the work. The owner came out and did the estimate himself, making detailed notes about the items on the list. This was in contrast from a couple of other companies who had provided estimates. One gave an estimate sight-unseen over the phone (to keep operating costs down) and another was less specific about exactly what they would do and how. Those are probably valid approaches which might work for others who are more home improvement savvy, but I appreciated the high-touch service that Wilcox provided.
Description of Work: Replaced 9 two-prong outlets with 3-prong outlets, rewiring 2 which hadn't worked since I moved in. Installed a 4-block "charging station" in the laundry room and a dedicated outlet for the dryer (also added a plug to the dryer which had previously been hard-wired into the fusebox). Removed an outlet which had been installed hastily/unsafely by a previous owner. Installed a dedicated line for an outlet in the bathroom where there had previously been none. They also swapped out a light fixture in the closet.

Thank you so much for the Review! We do have good, professional electricians working for the company. And thank you for noticing Steve's good estimating skills -- he'll be pleased, and he'll feel appreciated :). For certain types of jobs, Steve insists on going out to a property and looking at the site where work is to be done. It's a conservative approach, intended to avoid unnecessary/unwanted surprises. After more than 25 years of residential electrical work in this area, Steve knows how houses in this area are built. Most of the time, he can anticipate what is behind the walls and ceilings. Tom was the electrician who responded to my work order and he was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. He arrived on time and immediately identified the source of the problem. He corrected the problem quickly and identified several other electrical considerations around the house, He did an outstanding job and I am very pleased with the results and the advice he gave me. Tom understood more than the components of the job, he also understood the science behind what he was doing. He also had some interesting insights into other aspects of his field.

It went very well... once I got them there! Steve Wilcox came out and gave me an estimate. He was on time and professional. The contractors, Dale and Kevin, were very polite and professional, despite being about 40 mins late. My real problem was with making the appointments. After Steve gave the estimate, I called the office to make an appointment to have the work done. I was told it would be better to email them. So I did. About two weeks later someone finally called me back to make the appointment. No email or response in between. I think Wilcox does quality work and their people are professional, but they need to work on their office organization and customer service. If I wasn't a busy single mom, I would have contracted with another electrician before they got back to me!

Hello, I appreciate the constructive feedback about our tardy responsiveness. Really. We will discuss it in the office. A two week delay is not good business or courteous behavior, and we like to engage in both! I do not believe that it is common at all for us to be so late in responding to an inquiry. In the past, our office had been the weak area, but we have had solid employees here since the beginning of the year. My apologies to the Member.

It went great - they were punctual, professional, friendly, and actually ended up doing the work in about half the time they had anticipated - and therefore charged me about half what they had originally estimated! Yay! I would definitely work with them again.
Description of Work: Prior to buying our home, our inspector had found a number of major electrical issues to be fixed. We provided Wilcox with a copy of the report, and asked them to fix all the major issues - including replacing several breakers, fixing dead outlets, rewiring much of our 2 electrical panels, rewiring two lights, and installing some new lights.

My provider, Dale, was extremely thorough and careful in measuring the placement points for the 2 pendants over the island and did everything he could to minimize damage to the ceiling connected with changing from a single center-point to 2 independent fixtures. My only issue was the overall price, which seemed a little high for 4 hours' work. This family-owned firm is well organized and busy: the earliest appointment they could give me was a little over a week out from my call. But I would not hesitate to use Wilcox again or recommend them to a friend.

They took the time to educate me on what they were doing and the type of light bulb that went into the fixtures. Overall it was a pleasant experience. I did have to wait to get the appointment but I feel like it was worth it. They did call the day before to remind me of the appointment.

We are very fortunate and grateful to maintain a steady flow of business. As an FYI: It is not uncommon for our schedule to be fully booked for one week. We can often fit in smaller, service calls more quickly, but the larger jobs will tend to be booked about 7 - 10 days in advance. As a final point, I will add that Angie's List Members account for a significant amount of our business. We cannot thank you enough!!

Steve helped us out with a very complicated full meter board reconstruction. The old installation was rusted out and very dangerous. Steve identified the gravity of the situation, developed a cost-effective strategy for solving the problem, and worked tirelessly coordinating with Pepco to get the project approved and all the necessary permits. At all stages, Wilcox was professional, responsive, and helpful. I would give them the highest recommendation.

Thank you for the review!! It was a pleasure to work with this Member and help to ensure the safety of a condo building in the heart of Washington, DC. Everyone in the office was aware of this job -- it was a necessary and important job. And we are all very pleased that this job went well. It involved an unusual amount of coordination with Pepco, so it required persistence. Otherwise it went smoothly...as we like it! Tracy Wilcox

OMG, I love Wilcox Electric! From the moment that Steve Wilcox came to my house to give me an estimate for the job, the experience has been overwhelmingly pleasant! Our electrical panel in our 1926 DC rowhouse was a nightmare -- a spiderweb of wires, no kill-switch, no grounds, no real labeling -- I wouldn't have been surprised if Steve had taken one look, said, "Good luck with THAT!", and left! Instead, he not only quoted me a price that was well below what I had anticipated, he also saved me money by making pertinent observations and recommendations regarding other electrical questions that I had. And it just got better after that... When he discovered that we had other work planned for the second week in July, he scheduled to come on the 4th of July (and the day before he was leaving for vacation!), so that the panel would be ready for the next stage we had planned! THEN, he came with his two electricians 15 minutes EARLY (who comes 15 minutes early to anything on the 4th of July?), and they proceeded to create a work of art out of the disaster that was our electrical system in only THREE HOURS! I still can't get over THAT! They even went above and beyond in labeling our panel, knowing that it was important to us to understand the mystery of over 80 years of electric wiring additions that had been done to our home. Finally, I got a call the very next day as a follow-up to make certain that everything was to our satisfaction. I wish this man did construction and plumbing as well, because I'd never use anyone else for anything else ever again! Wilcox Electric gets an "A+++" from us, and we would highly recommend this company to anyone (and have already been talking to our neighbors, so hopefully more business will be coming to them soon!). Sincerely, Elaine Hall Potomac Ave. SE DC

To return from vacation to such a review is simply awesome! Thank you so much. It's especially nice to learn how much this Member appreciates Steve's effort on a holiday. It's also gratifying to know that we have been helpful. Wilcox Electric is our livelihood, of course, but it has never been solely about the money -- to provide good service means a lot to us. I must add that I don't expect Steve to venture into plumbing or other construction-related work, however. :) The electrical trade keeps him plenty busy. Thank you again for the awesome feedback! Thank you for your comments and taking the time to submit a report. FYI: Electrical heavy-ups (in which we replace the electrical panel, the service cable and the meter) are typically in this price range. There is no need to pay over $3,000 for a standard heavy up for a single family residence.

Excellent work from start to finish. Estimator came on time, understood my desires, and told me a few things that he thought I did not need to do which I thought I might have to do. Two-man crew did a great job of getting a new circuit up from the basement breaker box to the second and third floors and installing new outlets in a hundred-year-old, plaster-and-lath house, and of drilling a hole through 14 inches of brick to mount a new outdoor lamp, with a minimum of disruption. I would highly recommend them.

I would like to explain what happened here. The e-mail function from our website on the "Contact Us" page was not forwarding requests to us. I noticed this problem after about three weeks and obtained a complete listing of all e-mails that had been submitted but not received. (It was a mishap with our e-mail provider considering these e-mails as spam.) In order to be responsive, my office contacted each and every person who had tried to contact us by means of our website during that time period. It appears that my office perhaps did not explain themselves fully when they called this Member.

Bill is a very competent , experienced electrician who is affable, positive and easy to work with. I hired Wilcox mainly to feed the wires through the wall, as I can do basic electrical work. He was very competent at feeding the wires through the wall and worked quickly. However, I was not as impressed with the cosmetic aspects of his work. I had indicated that I would do patch up work (e.g. plastering) required, but I had to do more than I thought I should have where the new box was located.

Wilcox was recommended to me by another resident in my building. After the estimate, Tom and his team came out to do some initial work, but realized that the job would require a bit more work. The Wilcox team were excellent in setting up following appointments and the work was completed a couple of days later. I feel much better knowing that our outlets are up to code and ofter major safety issues have now been addressed.
Description of Work: I'm a first time home buyer and knew that my new place needed a number of upgrades and basic safety checks for an older property. Tom and his staff were on time and took the time to review all my concerns. I feel much better now that all my outlets are grounded and wiring is safely stored away. Tom kept in touch with me regarding repairs and kept the cost close to the credit I got from the previous owners.

Extremely pleasant. The receptionist Crystal was friendly & helpful with setting my appointment. The electrician Tom Adams was on time, he got all the work done at lightening speed & he was able to explain clearly what was done. I've used Wilcox about 3 times previously & I always receive the same excellent service. I have an older home & the electrical wiring can be a bit tricky for average handyman-jobs & I have needed to get electricians to fix problems after receiving some handyman services. I would recommend Wilcox to anyone.
Description of Work: My powder room fan was causing the electricity to go off in the living room which is on the other side of the wall. The fan was put in by a handyman last year. Also, Im leaving the area for a few months & I'm leaving the house to be cared for by a property manager so I wanted to fix several light sockets in closets and all through the house that were not working properly. I also wanted the light on the balcony repaired. I basically wanted all the lighting & electricity checked & repaired.

Dale arrived on time, was friendly and professional, and did an excellent job. He installed a ceiling fan that I had purchased, and also replaced two exterior lights with new fixtures I had purchased. He had all necessary equipment, did the job well, and cleaned up the porch when he was done. He also took away the old light fixtures so I didn't have to worry about disposing them.
