The owner, Steve Wilcox, came himself to inspect the wiring the in the home. He recommended we update the electrical work for newer appliances. The power company did not follow up with their inspection with us as they should have and hook up a the new box. Wilcox contacted the power company on my behalf and get the power company to come out and connect the power box. Steve Wilcox was very friendly and easy to talk to. I mentioned to him about getting new windows and even referred me to a great window company he used in the past. Overall it was a very pleasant experience. Whenever someone mentions electrical work, I always recommend Wilcox.

The work they did on the heavy up was very fast and only delayed by the dcra/pepco not communicating. Wilcox was helpful in sorting that out though. The have come back a number of times to to final connections for new lights and fans and we have never had any problems with them. They understand old houses which is a bonus!
Description of Work: We are renovating our house an have used Wilcox many times. They have put in a heavy up and many new lines for lights and ceiling fans.

They did a good job. Their pricing was reasonable. They worked with us to problem solve that other companies were not willing to do.
Description of Work: They did what is called a heavy up. They replaced a panel in the house and the outside power box along with the wiring that goes between the two.

I have used Wilcox both when I lived on Capitol Hill as well as now in Arlington. They do a great job. This time they upgraded some outlets, installed a ceiling fan and several lights. They even came back to tighten up a loose light switch box. Overall a great company to work with.

The technician was very polite and courteous. He looked at our electrical panel and was so impressed with how it looked, that he took a picture. This was a good price and we were pleased with the service. I do not remember too many details since it was long ago, but we were satisfied.

I love Wilcox! I have used them twice now and both times I was so pleased with the quality of the work and the reasonable prices. This most recent time, Dale came out to look at a few electrical problems in the basement. He took the time to carefully diagnose the root problems of both issues (ceiling fan not working and another light that wouldn't turn off). Then, after he had fixed both of those problems, he fixed a few more problems that I brought up during his visit. He was patient walking me through all the small fixes he was doing, and he fully explained a few more issues that someone would need to come back to fix again because he didn't have the part in his truck. I was so appreciative of his work and his time. And the cost was totally reasonable for the amount of things that were fixed and the amount that I learned. Oh, and he was excellent dealing with my giant, hyper dog too. Always a plus!

Wilcox Electric are my go-to guys for electrical work! They previously installed a new electrical panel for my house and did fantastic work then. For this job, they arrived on time, worked efficiently, and cleaned up compeltely when they were done. Dale was the main technician and he kept me informed of every step, working with me to find appropriate solutions when he encoutered issues with the installation of my ceiling fan. I would highly recommend Wilcox for any home electrical job, big or small.
Description of Work: Replaced an old ceiling fan with a new one, which required fixing poor installation/electrical box connections with the previous fan. Installed a timer switch for a bathroom fan, which required cutting the wall and enlarging the electrical box. Troubleshooted a faulty porch light timer and installed a new switch.

Thank you for the kind words and the Page of Happiness! It is very gratifying to know that we are doing good work and are able to make the contractor-encounter a good experience. We just hired one new electrical helper and one, super-nice, experienced journeyman -- I'm excited to have both of these men with us! I told them both how fortunate we are to have the really good customers that we have. It makes for a win-win, I think.

The technician, Nick, was on time and quickly figured out and remedied the problem. I would certainly use Wilcox again and recommend them to others.

Steve Wilcox is an excellent electrician! Knowledgeable, good communication, and provided excellent service in our situation. We needed a price quote for performing the electrical circult panel replacement, and Steve provided a free estimate and provided a written report after his inspection. I would recommend Wilcox Electric to anyone in the DC area needing an electrician.

Wilcox Electric not only saved the day, they also saved our house! Unfortunately, after moving into our home, we discovered MAJOR electrical problems throughout the house. The highly professional staff at Wilcox Electric worked with us to correct EVERY electrical problem. Their patience and professionalism in dealing with such a difficult job, far exceeded our expectations. Because the job required extensive exploratory work throughout the walls of the house, Wilcox Electric showed us everything that needed to be done and walked us through every step of the way. As Wilcox Electric is a family owned business, they were more than just electricians that fixed our house. They worked with us to ensure that we would have a high level of confidence that our house was perfect and more than safe to live in. Their staff never treated us like a number. We were always treated with compassion throughout the project, which took several months to complete due to the complexity. They always did their best to accommodate our needs/schedule. By the time this extensive project was complete, I considered the entire staff at Wilcox to be great friends. I cannot say enough positive things about our experience with Wilcox Electric. We plan to recommend them to anyone that we know who needs an electrician.

Thank you for the most kind words! It has been gratifying to be of service to this family. The situation was unusual, and the problems were significant. We conducted a complete analysis of all circuits in the house, and made all necessary repairs. We did get to know each other along the way, and we are likewise very fond of them! We wish them only the best, going forward! Tracy Wilcox

There was confusion all around. I called to make an appointment for electrical work and was given a date 10 days in the futurefor 4 hours of work. The electrician arrived on time, but walked into my home and immediately told me he would have to do an estimate and only stayed about 2 hours of the 4 I was expecting. So, the end result was they told me that to actually have the work done the wait was another 10 days. So, I wish I had not wasted my time waiting to be told I would have to wait again. No reason to call Wilcox in the future, they appear to have so much business they can treat customers poorly.
Description of Work: I called to make an appointment for work to be done and was told the wait was 10 days. To have quality work I will wait 10 days. However, I waited 10 days and then once they arrived, I was told I would have to wait 10 days for the work to actually be completed because this trip would only be an estimate (I had given an overview of what I needed when I made the appointment so was surprised they didn't send the correct person). When I said I could not wait another 10 days the response was "good luck with that". Sorry, but the lady on the phone has too much attitude to be in customer service. And within an hour I had another A rated Angie's list electrician lined up to come and do the work the next day. So I guess the luck worked and no need to waste any more time with Wilcox. (The work done by the other provider was excellent with excellent customer service, so am overall just fine that Wilcox didn't want my business).

I would like to extend a sincere apology to the Member for her frustrating experience with Wilcox Electric. We do value each and every customer, and we regret any inconvenience that we caused. The woman “with the attitude” in our office is contrite, and she has offered to apologize personally to the Member. We are counseling her on how to communicate more effectively, as it sounds like her intention was misunderstood. We have also counseled her about how to manage scheduling. I agree that waiting an additional 10 days was unacceptable. This Member’s report highlights a problem with which we at Wilcox Electric had been grappling. In August and September, we were very busy working on a number of projects with real estate investors / developers. These are the high profile jobs in which the contractor is able to put their sign out front of a newly renovated property and gain widely sought-after exposure. (These types of jobs seem to be a good barometer for the economy, and we are seeing more of them lately.) They require a big allocation of time though. In August, when we abruptly lost one of the five electricians on our staff, our ability to handle this work declined. Just last week, my husband and I decided that we want to re-focus our resources on our core business. At our core, we are a residential, service contractor. That means Angie’s List-type of electrical work. This “going back to basics” should help to keep our electricians available to our best customers, and Angie’s List customers are just that. I continue to be impressed with how Angie’s List Members will hone in on where we need to change, how we need to adjust our business. This report, while regrettable, reinforces my conviction that we need to keep the focus on our core business. I am thankful to the Member who submitted this report, and I’d like to say thank you for the community of Angie’s List Members. Your educated and insightful comments are always well-received. I am impressed by Wilcox's tremendous responsiveness and though this was just an evaluation of the job, I felt I had to mention it: I needed to have someone look at a wiring replacement job so I can make some quick decisions prior to a big weekend at the house. Crystal responded to my initial query this morning, understood my haste, worked to find an available technician (which i know was a big request) , and lined up out some same day help. Nick (and David?) graciously came over after having spent a few hours on another job in the driving rain. Nick was a a pro and he and David were courteous and efficient. They quickly sized up the job, offered me a couple of excellent options, and relayed the job back to Crystal who promptly called me back to set up the appointment. This is how it should be folks. A very solid an responsive company that has their workflow and process set up perfectly for the customer.

My wife and I recently purchased a hundred-year-old home. Dale & Gerald came out a few times to help with my laundry list of electrical tasks. They were professional and courteous, but mostly what distinguishes them from other contractors, in my experience, was they went the extra distance to ensure their work was top notch. Last thing I need is someone cutting corners with old wiring. They have a stellar work ethic and genuinely seem to take pride in their work.
Description of Work: Over the course of 2 days they installed 4 ceiling fans, 2 interior light fixtures, fixed ground wire to cold water, tightened wires in panel, hard-wired smoke, whole home wifi access point, 3 exterior lights, etc

I will say that the overall experience was very positive with Wilcox and i will be having them upgrade my panel within the next few months as well. I think it is important to point out that Steve Wilcox was willing to come out for a free inspection, something I feel most of the electricians in town do not do for free. That was a great starting point. Steve was very candid with me about what he thought the worst case scenario might cost so I would have a reasonable understanding what to expect, and was honest with me regarding my panel upgrade, letting me know that I might not need as large of a panel as some would suggest. Tom Adams and Kevin Moye completed the work and they were very professional and got the work done faster than expected. There experience working in older homes and troubleshooting issues was evident and I think they even surprised themselves a bit with how quickly they were able to identify the concern for the power outage. They both explained what they were doing while they worked so I would have a good understanding of the process which I appreciated. Before leaving Tom was sure to make sure everything was cleaned up from the work and that everything was back in place. Overall great experience getting the work completed. My only B rating for responsiveness is related to the office. I felt I had to work a little more than I wanted to get the work scheduled. I think I called back 3-4 times trying to get the written estimate sent over before I could schedule the work. I eventually got Crystal on the phone and she was able to straighten it out for me. Overall, great experience and I will use again!
Description of Work: 1) traced out circuits and found broken wire in switch box at front door. This fixed a power outage in two rooms on second floor and two outlets on ground floor. 2) changed one 3 way switch 3) ran fish tape over from cold water to panel for future work 4) refed one plug in basement and added plug and plate 5) secured loose outlet boxes in bedooms

Kudos to Nick for being a master electrical troubleshooter and problem solver! Other electricians I had called told me that it was not possible to install an attic fan in the old casing since they don't come in that size anymore so they installed a fan that really didn't fit and made a lot of noise. So my initial call to Wilcox Electric was to get another opinion and hopefully a new attic fan. Nick came over, took measurements, and ultimately installed a new attic fan that works like a charm and makes no noise at all. The next time I called Wilcox Electric was for a broken ceiling light in the kitchen. Once again Nick came over and quickly installed the new light fixture only to find out that one of the sockets didn't work. Since I'd mentioned to Nick that there was an old fuse box in the basement that didn't make sense, he took a quick look at it and told me they could do a complete electrical assessment and then probably by-pass the fuse box. Since I was going to have to return the faulty kitchen light fixture and it was getting late, I told Nick that I'd schedule the assessment within a couple of weeks. I really appreciated it when a few weeks later Crystal called me to see when I wanted to schedule the assessment since I just hadn't gotten around to it. Nick and David arrived on time and once again things were installed and fixed quickly and thoroughly. I appreciate the great customer service that Wilcox Electric provides and the fact that the staff is so knowledgeable, dependable, and totally focused on getting the job done well with the least amount of inconvenience to you. I will definitely call Wilcox Electric the next time I need any electrical work done in the house.
Description of Work: I have now called on Wilcox Electric a couple of times to do electrical work and each time it has been great, from the person who answers the phone (Crystal) to the electricians (Nick and David) that have come out to do the work. Wilcox Electric has replaced an attic fan (not an easy task since the house is old and I wanted a fan to fit the old casing), replaced a light fixture in the kitchen, fixed a couple of things that came up during an electrical assessment, and installed a new plug for the sump pump.

I have downgraded my review because there was other work that they were going to get back to me on. This has not yet happened. I will call and see what the matter is. I don't have a very big job to do, yet need the work I had asked for, and am most disappointed that I've not been contacted. If this is resolved, I will write yet another review, hopefully as good as my original one. I must update this review. Steve said he would buy the appropriate low-voltage office lights and get back to me. I am still waiting. We also discussed outdoor lighting for the back yard, but I never heard from him again. In fairness, I did not call him, but I should not have to when told that he will buy and install the fixtures. I am disappointed, as he seemed very competent, but I apparently fell through the cracks. I say I would use Wilcox again because of the professional work which was done was done very well, and he was courteous and cost considerate. If I need future work, however, I will want to see it completed before I write a review (it is now nearly a year since I ordered the lighting fixtures and was to have them installed!).
Description of Work: I had a broken dimmer switch, which was replaced. I also have two low-voltage office lights (ceiling-mounted) which I was aware were not fixable. Steve will be buying two replacements and installing them. Also there was a broken bulb in a bathroom fixture that needed to be removed and replaced, and this was done.

We completed the installation of the surge protector in 2011 -- thank you for submitting a report after all this time! We at Wilcox Electric strongly believe in the benefit of surge protectors. We have direct, personal experience with this, since our office space is prone to electrical surges. We lost a printer a few years back, installed a surge protector and soon thereafter had another surge that fried the surge protector but did no other damage. Separately, we have been called into properties after an electrical surge has destroyed electronics and/or and appliances. Occasionally, the electrical panel in a house may be compromised and that becomes a potentially serious hazard. The surge protectors are not a 100% guarantee, but they are a good layer of protection.
