Work was well done - finished quickly and they were good about warning about stuff like having to punch some holes in our basement ceiling to run wires out to deck. I've definitely had other contractors who would've just done that w/o a heads-up. They worked well with the contractor building the deck and were punctual.
Description of Work: Installed lighting for steps on external deck and did some minor repair on outlets in the house.

Extremely skilled and professional. Steve, the owner, came out to give me the estimate, including helpful explanations of the scope of the project and how he envisioned it being accomplished. At my request, the work was performed in two stages a few weeks apart -- on both days, the electricians arrived within a few minutes of their scheduled time, talked through the work plan, and then worked very hard all day. The results came out perfectly (and look great, too). The electricians took care not to cut any more holes than absolutely necessary into the ceiling or drywall, which I greatly appreciated. They also skillfully adjusted to unexpected obstacles, like a random pipe that happened to be exactly where we'd planned to put the new power outlet, and a very cramped installation area for the new breaker panel. I really can't say enough good things about how diligent and professional these guys were. The only hitch we had was scheduling -- at the last minute before the originally scheduled work date, the office called me to reschedule because they had forgotten to get the necessary parts for the appointment, which caused me to have to also reschedule a bunch of other things that we supposed to follow the electrical work (cable installation, drywall repair, etc.), delaying the whole project by about two weeks. On the other hand, when Wilcox made an error in my favor on the estimate, charging less for part of the project than they intended to, they did the right thing and honored the lower price after realizing the error. All in all, I was extremely happy with the experience and would not hesitate to hire Wilcox again.
Description of Work: Replaced entire breaker panel. Also ran wires to install new ceiling light fixture and power for wall-mounted TV.

It went great. They were friendly. There was no problem whatsoever, and I have already referred them to someone.
Description of Work: I purchased one of the big deals for 2 hours of electrical service. They replaced two outdoor lights, one of which was a little complicated, as the fixture was old, and the sensor that I purchased wasn't close to an exact fit, but they made it work. They also repaired another motion sensor twin flood light.

Dale and Rodney showed up promptly, worked efficiently, explained what they were doing clearly, and cleaned up thoroughly. They were professionals in every sense and the next time I need electrical work done I'll use Wlcox again and ask them to send Dale and Rodney.
Description of Work: Trouble shot a dead electrical outlet, traced the problem to a broken wire behind a switch plate across the room, repaired it. Repaired insulation to the power line leading to rooftop HVAV gear and mounted a disconnect switch that the installer had left lying on the roof.

Unlike many service providers, we were pleasantly surprised when Wilcox called on the day they were scheduled to come and let us know that they would be available to come over several hours earlier than originally scheduled. They were thorough in their assessment and explained every step of the way why they were looking at what they were looking at and their findings. A week later, we had a very detailed and reasonably priced quote in-hand. While we have not yet had the work done, our intention is to work with Wilcox based on the top-notch service they provided during the assessment itself.
Description of Work: We purchased the $200 electrical inspection package, and Wilcox Electric completed that assessment.

The electrician from Wilcox had to come three times to complete the work because parts had to be ordered and other reasons that were not the fault of the electrician. The electrician showed up at the time he said he would each time. He did an excellent job installing the new repairing the emergency lights that could be repaired and installing new emergency lights where needed.

Thank you for submitting a report. We appreciate the kind words! I remember this job, since we don't deal with damage from lightning strikes all the time. Our electricians were able to complete the work in less than half of the time originally estimated. That doesn't happen all the time either. The customer's invoice was much lower than expected, because we bill for actual hours worked for a majority of our jobs. (Electrical heavy-ups is one, significant exception.) Tracy Wilcox

I called Wilcox hoping that someone could come out the same day since we were heading out of town the next day and didn't want to worry about a fire hazard. Initially, I was told that they were all booked. However, Rich asked more about the problem and understood my concern. He eventually said that someone would be able to make it out the same day. Within a couple of hours, they called to say that someone would be by my home in an hour or so. Abdel and Rodney were very professional and left the work area clean which I really appreciated. We had other electricians who wouldn't touch the job. Perhaps the others didn't know what to do???? Abdel was very knowledgeable and he and Rodney fixed the problem. I'd definitely use Wilcox again. I really appreciated that they understood my concern and were able to come out the same day.
Description of Work: We had old wiring that would smoke and crackle every few months from an old junction box . Abdel and Rodney discovered that there was a damaged wire (corrosion as well). Only one wire was visible so it required cutting through the wall to find the damaged wire. The damaged wire (and others) were found. The damaged wire was repaired, the wires capped off and a new junction box was installed.

Thank you for the kind words. Abdel is a very experienced and capable electrician. We do tend to be heavily booked for about one week in advance. However, we make time available for emergency situations or occasions where there is a serious concern about the safety of the electrical system. That's the nature of our business, and we deal with electrical emergencies -- or questionable, electrical concerns -- on a regular basis. (That does mean that we may have to postpone other, non-hazardous, electrical work to find the necessary time, and we are grateful to our customers who end up accommodating our schedule!)

Steve was great!! Not only was he prompt, he stayed all day to complete the job in our house that does not have central air on a very hot day! He pointed out things of note and kept me in the loop all during the time he was here. Personable, on time, and he left everything cleaner than when he arrived. If you have the need for an experienced electrician and you have an old house, I highly recommend him and Wilcox.
Description of Work: We had several lights and a ceiling fan to remove and replace, some of which proved challenging because of the age of our house and the fact they were done improperly at a prior date.

Dale and Nelson were great! Some of the work wasn't easy or typical, but they figured out a ways to make it work. For example, due to the weight of the chandelier, it added complexity to the project and may have resulted in them needing a 3rd person. However, they figured out a clever way of installing it safely without the 3rd person, which saved us time and money. They were very professional and friendly.

I would highly recommend Wilcox Electric. They were prompt and professional throughout the process. I was concerned that creating the outdoor outlet would be problematic due to the length of wire that would need to be pulled and the need to cut through siding. The owner of the company (Steve) came to the house to confirm that everything was doable, and he provided an estimate, all for no cost. The electrician (Eddie) showed up at the beginning of the one-hour arrival window on the appointed day. He and his assistant (unfortunately, I did not get his name) worked quickly and efficiently, and even somehow managed not to wake up my napping 9-month old. They cleaned up the mess made during the work. And, when the outdoor outlet they had on hand proved to protrude too far to be suitable behind a wall-mounted TV, Eddie took himself off the clock and ran to Home Depot to purchase a low-profile outlet that would work. I plan to use Wilcox Electric again for future electrician needs.

Let me start by saying that this review is long, long overdue since these services were performed more than a month ago. Anyway, Steve Wilcox and Wilcox Electric have won me over for life, here's why. Around dinner time on Thursday, April 9, we noticed a strange, slight burning smell in our home that we could not pin down. I called the nearby fire station, who came over to investigate. They couldn't find anything burning or suspicious, but they told me to have an electrician come over THAT SAME NIGHT (it was already around 6:30pm or 7:00) to check out my home's electrical system in order to rule out an electrical problem. I randomly called Wilcox Electric, but since it was after hours, the voicemail message listed a mobile number to call. I called it, expecting to hear an answering machine or an answering service, but Steve Wilcox himself answers. After I explained the situation to him - half expecting him to say sorry he couldn't come until morning - he said he was leaving dinner at his house (in Maryland) to come to my place (in Capitol Hill) right away. He showed up a little while later and then proceeded to spend the next several hours methodically checking my circuit box, outlets, etc., telling me what he's looking for and what he was doing at each step. Mind you it's after 9pm at this point but from his friendliness and demeanor you would have thought he was doing a routine service call at noon. Happily he didn't find any major problems but offered a few tips and flagged a few non-critical things that could be done. When it came time to pay, I was fully expecting to get slaughtered since it was multiple hours of work that were done on short notice, after-hours (and I hadn't bothered to ask about pricing when I called). Steve looked at his watch, added up his time, multiplied by his hourly rate and then took 10% off for having found him on Angie's List. No premium amount, no after-hours surcharge, nothing. I even said, "shouldn't you be charging me more?" His response - "What I did here was pretty routine and I didn't do anything 'spectacular,' so no." I was floored. Aside from being an honorable and capable small businessman, Steve Wilcox is a really nice and friendly guy, and I can't recommend him and Wilcox Electric enough.

Description of Work: We moved into a house in disrepair with a litany of electrical issues. Steve, the owner, came out twice for two free estimates and helped us prioritize the important updates (new circuits, power up, and gfci's).We didn't feel pushed into anything and they offered the cheap and Cadillac options for fixing a couple of the issues. The technician arrived promptly, tried calling me twice, and left a note on the door -- embarrassingly, I had forgotten to cancel the appointment! Over 2 visits we had master electrician Dale with assistant Nelson the first time and assistant Jonah the second time. All three of these men were knowledgeable (unlike previous electricians we had tried). In addition, they were friendly and engaging while they worked. They were willing to explain what they were doing and why they were doing it. They were able to perform the wire fishing with minimal cuts into the walls, and as requested, they saved the pieces of drywall to facilitate the follow-up repairs. They diagnosed other issues with our breaker box of which we were not aware and took corrective steps. There was never any hint that they might be making up stuff to do - again unlike previous electricians we had tried. They worked efficiently, made very little mess, and cleaned it all up thoroughly. This is the type of exemplary experience we hope to have with every service company we engage. The "B" rating on the price comes from lack of comparison. This was a day-long job, so it wasn't going to be cheap. We were given the pricing schedule in advance, so it was not a surprise at all. But ultimately, the quality of the work and the whole experience most definitely made the expense very worthwhile.
Description of Work: Bedroom re-wired for the overhead lights whose wires had been chewed over the years by vermin. New overhead light fixtures installed in bedroom. Correct multiple issues with breaker box. Hallway lights both downstairs and upstairs re-wired properly for 3-way operation.

Let's just say Wilcox saved me from a do-it-yourself job gone bad. I tried to replace a ballast on a 20-plus-year-old fluorescent light fixture and accidentally removed an anchor screw. The fixture was supported by one screw on one end and a 10-foot pole that I found on the other--quite comical in retrospect. I called Wilcox and easily made an appointment for two days later. They could have come out sooner, but they needed to secure the proper ballast from a supplier. I believe it was Dale who came out--very nice guy. He showed up within the time frame given, took a quick look at the fixture, and confirmed the time/cost estimates I had been given by the scheduler. I had bought a new fixture just in case but didn't need it. The new ballast was smaller than the original one and didn't fit easily in the same spot, but Dale found a way to secure it. He also secured the end of the fixture that was hanging due to the missing screw. I don't know if the cost for this service is high, average, or low, but I was told Wilcox gives 10% off for Angie's List members. The fixture was in a precarious position; so, I was willing to pay a couple hundred bucks. This is the first time I had used Wilcox and will definitely hire them again.

Dale, the electrician, arrived on time, was very friendly - even liked our big dog! He assessed our entire electical system; pointed out some faulty outlets (which we later had Wilcox replace) and recommended a surge protector for our fuse box, which he installed that day. I later had Dale and another electirican from Wilcox come for a full day's work to replace most of the outlets in our home (not grounded) and replace about half of them with GFCI outlets so that we don't have to worry about 3 prong plugs anymore. They worked efficiently and did a great job.
