Perry Moving & Storage

Horrible! My story is listed above. The person, David, who answered the phone misrepresented himself. He said he would call me back with an estimate but never did. He avoided my calls all day. When I finally spoke to Steve, the sales manager, he was rude and hung up on me!

Perry Movers did an outstanding job. The moving crew worked swiftly, were courteous and professional, and amazingly, took almost no time out for breaks or even lunch. My home in Annapolis was two floors plus a basement full of office/studio/workshop items. The new location in Alexandria is all on one floor. Boxes filled the house and adjacent two-car garage. I am almost finished unpacking everything (two months) so I have a pretty good idea of the condition of most items upon arrival. Move-in day it was 98 degrees, but the heat didn't slow them down. The move required two 24-foot vans, and the boxed/packaged count was about 250. Overall item count was close to 500. They packed things so well that the only casualties were a couple of chips on one vase (not valuable), a measuring cup, and a couple of bent lamp shades, these not because of the packing per se, but because they were not placed on the top of a pile of boxes at the destination. No dishes or glasses broken. A leg on a piece of furniture had to be re-glued, but they did that before leaving. The only criticism is that if anything they were too thorough. Several things that I explicitly told them to leave behind they moved anyway. I can now see that it might have been difficult to remember these items, and if I had clearly labeled those items that were to have been left behind, it would have been worked better. I would request that when they pack lampshades that they put the harp in the same box. I am still trying to find a couple of harps for shades. The price I paid was lower than other bids I received from other several other movers. But here is a caution about any moving company. I found that their pricing structures were very confusing and you might originally be quoted a price that did not include one or more phases of the move. For example, if you required temporary storage of your furniture (as it turned out I did not need this), you might be quoted a price for storage that did not include loading or unloading the furniture at the warehouse. Therefore, insist on a detailed breakdown of the cost of every step in the moving process. For example, I would ask for prices for packing, pickup and loading furniture in the van, and travel from one destination to the other including fuel surcharge. If furniture storage is needed, price for unloading at the warehouse, price for actual storage and is this billed by the day, week or month, and loading furniture back into the van. Finally, add the cost of unloading the van into your new location.

The packing day seemed fine for the most part, but I suppose we weren't watching as closely as we should have been. It seemed like they were packing everything quickly and professionally, with a few odd slip-ups. For example, they asked me to inspect a room to make sure everything was packed and all my clothes were still on the hangers...?! And they damaged one of the walls pulling off a whiteboard (that I had actually wanted to leave on the wall). I showed them some books I had packed already and told them that they probably needed to go in smaller boxes because they were so heavy; they left them as is. They also packed a bin that I had specifically kept out because I wanted it to go in the car with us. Still, they were very nice and we gave all the guys a tip. Moving day came, and we had some problems. 1) The books I had mentioned to them. The moving guys said they were way too heavy to move and that the packers should have put them in smaller boxes, just as I had said. They ended up using a dolly to move them and taking a few books out of the boxes when necessary. 2) They hadn't packed one of the marble tops of a piece of furniture. Now, when the inspector came, she specifically noted that there were 3 flat pieces of marble to move, but they only packed up 2 of them. However, the company came out pretty quickly to pack that last piece. The real problem was uncovered when we started to unpack. Here's a typical example: I go to unpack a wardrobe box and the contents are labeled "clothes." Makes sense. Except when I open the box I find two clothing items, resting on top of a jumbled stack of empty hangers. Also resting on top of the hangers is a VERY expensive coffee table book, that was just tossed on top of the mess -- thankfully, it was still in the original plastic wrapping or it probably would have been really messed up by the hangers. Also in the box were two tennis shoes. Now, mind you, they weren't MATCHING tennis shoes -- one was white with pink trim and one was solid black suede. Thankfully they matched up with the pink and black tennis shoes I pulled out of a different box. Now multiply that times 90 boxes and you get an idea of how much fun we've had unpacking. A box labeled "books" will have two books, and then the rest is filled with shoes, clothes, and part of a lamp. It makes unpacking a series of surprises, true, but it also makes it very much more difficult than it should be. Addendum: Despite the fact that the person who came out to inspect everything ahead of time specifically mentioned that they would pack our flat screen TV in a crate so that it was not damaged the packers did not do this. As a result our screen was damaged and we now have a pale spot approximately 4"Hx6"W in the middle of our TV!!!! I forgot to add this when I first posted but it bugs the heck out of me every time I go to watch TV!

They were prompt, fair and hard-working.

First the woman who answered the phone made an appointment for the owner to see exactly what I needed to be moved in order to give an accurate estimate. I was holding that time but then received a phone call saying that he couldn't make it so to please email a list of what had to be moved and someone would get back to me immediately. Well, I emailed the list on July 7th which took me a very long time to do because I put the size of each piece as well, but then never heard anything back! I even called and left a message asking if my email was received and still no reply, so after a week of waiting I went with someone else who was very responsive. This is no way to do business unless Perry Movers have so much business that they don't care.

The move ended up happening on 2 extremely hot days with 4 movers and 2 trucks on the first day and 3 movers with 1 truck on the second. This was in-line with the estimate. The crew was extrememly hard-working, courteous, and professional. Although the time estimated for the move and the estimated weight was a bit off, the crew worked hard to make the move happen as close to the estimate as possible. They worked tirelessly despite the heat. We can honestly say this was the best move we have made, and we would hire them again.

They did an excellent job. They came on time and never stopped working or even slowed down, even though it was at least 100 degrees out and I had no A/C at either end. They didn't damage anything, placed everything properly, and were polite, cheerful, and efficient throughout. The job came in below the estimate.

They were great.These guys worked their butts off in the heat.They were careful with the items and cautious of not damaging both houses.Usually the idea of moving is very stressful but these made it really fun. Everybody was professional and courteous with my requests and they exceded my expectations.Their service is excellent and fairly priced.

The estimator from Perry Moving was very efficient and provided an accurate estimate of the cost, size of truck and crew required as well as the amount of time it would take for the move. The company called to confirm the evening before and also first thing in the morning of the move. During the morning call, we were asked if we needed any boxes or wardrobes. We had a crew of three wonderful gentlemen who went to work quickly and maintained a friendly and positive attitude the entire day. They even helped load a tv and entertainment center that we were giving away into our relative's pick-up truck and finished the entire move an hour early. Just very capable, great guys that my husband and I would recommend to anyone.

I actually love them. They were excellent. They were on time and polite; unbelievable. It is the best moving company I've used. They broke on wheel off of a TV stand, but they told me immediately and it wasn't that big of a deal. If I ever have to move again I will use them again.

the gentleman that did the moving were very friendly, kind and quick. They remained happy and positive the whole day. They worked quickly and efficiently. They were careful, conscientious and courteous. I was shocked when they had our entire 4 bedroom house packed and ready to leave by noon. there was a scheduling clitch in the beginning but it was quickly worked out and we moved as scheduled. I would absolutely hire them again!

They were fantastic. They were punctual, very careful about my things and very helpful. The overall customer service was really good. I would rate them high overall. I would use them again in the future if needed.

The estimator showed up on time and was very polite, friendly, thorough and professional. She answered all my questions and gave me a bunch of literature that was helpful. She took a detailed inventory of the stuff that was going on the truck and explained how they come up with a number. The movers were right on time and each of them introduced themselves by name and were friendly and pleasant. They got right work and loaded the truck within a couple of hours. They drove right to the new place and started unloading right away and never got cranky, even though it was a cold, drizzly day. I have some valuable furniture and they wrapped it all very carefully. They wrapped the IKEA stuff just as nicely as the better things! I was so impressed with how careful they were with everything. I have now unpacked every last box, including a lot of art glass, framed art, fancy dishes and glassware, etc., and not ONE THING was damaged! Or lost! I've been recommending them to everyone. I had a really awful experience with a mover years ago and the guys at Perry Moving have restored my faith. They're great!

This is the second time I have used Perry Moving. They were originally recommended by two of my co-workers. Each time they have done a fantastic job, carefully padding and moving each one of my belongings as though they were priceless. The guys put down padding to protect my floors also. All three movers were very professional, considerate, and friendly. I felt very comfortable with them. The estimate was right on target as well. I highly recommend Perry Moving.

I thought they were excellent. The company provided excellent customer service. The owner called several time before and after service to make sure everything was going smoothly and even gave his cell phone number for quick access. The movers worked very quickly and efficiently. Great Job. Couldn't be more happy. When we noted that we have moved 20 times in our military lives, they said, "Well, you saved the best for last!" They took real pride in their work and it showed with not a scratch or broken glass in the move.

I received a quick in-home estimate to my last minute request. Movers were great, professional, courteous, amazingly efficient and took great care of my belongings. My reason for the D in price is that I was never told that there was a minimum number of hours to be billed. My initial estimate was 5 1/2 hours. However, before the move I had many items moved myself. I called the mover and reported the items I had left to move in case they had to alter the number of men or size of truck. My move only took 2 - 2 1/2 hours. However, I was told after all item wesre moved that there was a 4 hour minimum. I was not told of this minimum and it was not in the documentation I received. I called an left a message for the mover to dispute the cost. I was never contacted. I would recommend this mover, however just be very careful about the price quote! Today is 4/24/11 and I received a call from Rich Perry. He apologized for the miscommunication and no response to my message. He was professional, curteous, and apologetic. He asked me what he could do to rectify the situation. He is going to credit me back 1 hour, $135.00. I have changed my price rating from a D to a B. I would definitely recommend this moving company.

The movers showed up on time. There were three guys instead of the two that were quoted, so the rate was increased from $110/hr to $135/hr. The manager called me to make sure I was aware/OK with this change. There are complicated, narrow stairs in the house and the crew navigated them beautifully with a minimum of wall scrapes. Everything was wrapped up in blankets and I have found only one damaged item (a drawer slide that I was able to fix with a bigger screw). They finished the move in 4 hours, including travel time between places. The total was about $15 more than what was quoted...I am happy with the results.

We had Perry Moving come to our rental townhouse to provide us with an estimate in early February and asked for a late February move date. When we saw that the weather was going to be perfect a week before the move we asked for an earlier date, which they immediately agreed to. The day of the move the three man team arrived on time. The crew chief was very communicative throughout the move to ensure I was pleased with the way items were moved and to ensure everything needing to be moved was packed and loaded. At the destination, they promptly unloaded and placed our furniture and other items where we wanted them. It was an another excellent experience.

No problems start to finish. Estimator, supervisor and crew were all very friendly and helpful.

Moved my belongs from a Town House to my new home. The Movers were outstanding. The snow was not a hinderance and they moved many boxes for us and they couldn't use their hand trucks. They were so strong, coordinated, and didn't break a thing. Very caring individuals that were proud of their work. If I move again, I must have them back. The company is first-rate. Sam came out and gave us an assessment before the move date. Never hand any mover do that before. Payment for the services was very easy. We also had to reschedule because of the snow, it was a juggling act, but the company helped me get out of the old place on time. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this company... especially Mark and his associate (never got his name).

Wonderful! This company is superb. I had them come the day before the move to pack my kitchen for me, and the person spent about 3-4 hours doing that, and it was worth it! Perry's also let me take some gently used boxes from their warehouse site for free to use to pack my stuff. Thanks to an Angie's List special, I got free wardrobe boxes. The team was on time, pleasant and highly motivated. They worked tirelessly, with only a brief lunch break. The move started at 8 am, and the last of the load was unloaded around 5:30pm. The crew worked well together, had a great team captain, and was careful with everything that they handled. They did not care if they were going up or down stairs, they placed everything where we asked them to. We had 2 storage pods delivered at the new home & they unloaded those for us too. I've done 5 military moves in the past, but this was the best moving crew I ever had!

UPDATE: (01/15/2011) After submitting my initial report, I received a phone call from the owner - Rich Perry. Rich was very apologetic for the bad experience I had had. He listened to my side of the story and then offered to (partially) compensate me for the cost of replacing the missing legs. Although the money was nice, it was even nicer that Rich took the time to personally call me, and to listen to me. I think this demonstrates that he really does care about customer service, and his company's reputation. Thanks Rich, you really turned this around! Initial Report: The beginning of the move went well. The movers showed up on time and handled my stuff with care. Unfortunately, three of the legs for my (new) dining room table did not arrive at the destination. My interaction with Perry regarding the missing legs was lousy. Their position was that I would have to take it up with the Interstate moving company. But the way I see it, this is Perry's responsibility - I hired them to handle the move and they are the ones that dismantled the table and took it away. I had no say nor visibility into what happened after they left with my stuff. Pointing fingers, shirking responsibility, and asking the customer to take it up with a third party is lousy customer service, plain and simple.

We contacted Perry Moving based on their ratings on Angie's List. The coordinator, David Lamb, was very nice and helpful over the phone, and scheduled a visit for the estimator to come and look. He also rescheduled the estimator when we couldn't make the original date. The estimator, Sam Perry, was also very nice and very helpful, answering all our questions and concerns (as a former military family, we have some experience with moving and movers!). On the scheduled day, the packing team (Postal, Al, and Patrick) arrived right on time and worked very hard all day packing our things. The next day, there was still packing to be done as well as loading the truck, and the packing team for that day (Postal, Al, and Justin) again worked very hard, as did the truck driver (Evan). We were delighted with how smoothly everything went, and with how friendly and cheerful everyone was. Sam Perry visited on that day, too, to make sure everything was going well. Thanksgiving was two days after our pickup, so it was over a week before our things could be delivered to our new home, but we didn't mind because it gave us a chance to enjoy the holiday with family before we drove to Tennessee. On the delivery day, the truck arrived right on time and the guys got very efficiently to work. The unloading team, from a local Chattanooga company (Anthony, Kevin, and Mike), were all very friendly and very quick to understand what we needed and what we said. The unloading team got the whole truck unloaded by mid-afternoon, which was amazing, and in our unpacking we have yet to find anything that was broken, which is a miracle. This is experience speaking, it is a miracle to have nothing get broken! Evan Pearce's truck driving deserves special mention, too. Our road in Chattanooga is a crescent with very old trees overhanging it, but he managed to get the truck to our house and parked, and then out again, without breaking any of the tree branches or scratching the truck! We were very impressed. We do not plan to move from here, but if we ever do, we hope we will find a moving company that is as helpful, efficient, and professional as Perry's.

We hired Perry Moving Services a second time to move our furniture from our home to our rented townhouse. During the move the movers inadvertently dropped a large file cabinet in the foyer causing a gash in newly installed vinyl flooring. The lead supervisor called the problem to my attention immediately. I called the flooring company and between them and Mr. Perry, they agreed to replace the flooring for the new buyers. When we went to settlement, we had this agreement in hand so that the buyers knew this would not be an issue for them after settlement. They truly are a professional company, who wants to maintain your business.
